Ask Yoast: using same keywords on multiple pages

01:29
Tristan asked Yoast: "What should I do if my phrases contain keywords I've optimized other pages for?" Joost answers: "Well Tristan, if you do it right, then the ‘bridal make up course’ page will automatically rank better for bridal make up course than the ‘make up course’ page. The problem you have, is that you’re afraid that your ‘bridal make up course’ page will outrank your ‘make up course’ page for the term make up course. If that’s the case you should really make sure that your ‘bridal make up course’ page links to your ‘make up course’ page telling people that that’s the more general page about your make up courses. And that the bridal make up course is specific to bridal make up. Actually having the two pages might make it easier to rank for the make up course keyword. In fact you might get lucky and get two results, where your make up course page ranks #1 and your bridal make up course page ranks #2, as an indent for the same keyword. So it doesn’t have to be a problem at all. Good luck!" https://yoa.st/3f8 Having a SEO question yourself? Please email to [email protected] and maybe we'll answer your question next time!

Lesson 12: Cornerstone content and the Yoast SEO plugin - SEO for beginners training

05:20
This video is part of the free SEO for beginners training course by Yoast Academy. Find the complete training at https://yoa.st/3koIn the SEO for beginners training course, we explain the very basics of SEO. The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practise actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. Yoast SEO offers effective tools that help you take care of your site structure. We offer a text link counter, a specific cornerstone content analysis, and – in Yoast SEO Premium – even internal linking suggestions, in which cornerstone articles feature more prominently than regular posts. With the text link counter in the Yoast SEO plugin, you can filter your cornerstone articles in the Posts overview, and see how many internal links a post receives and how many posts it links to. With the text link counter, you can see at a glance if your cornerstone content gets enough links from related posts. In the Yoast SEO meta box on the pages or posts editor, you can mark your content as cornerstone content. As a result, both the SEO analysis and the readability analysis will be stricter than usual. Why? Because your cornerstone content should be longer and even better than your other articles. The demands on your writing should be higher. Lesson 1: What does Google do? - SEO for beginners training

04:05
This video is part of the free SEO for beginners training course by Yoast Academy. Find the complete training at https://yoa.st/38o. In the SEO for beginners training course, we explain the very basics of SEO. The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practise actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. In this video, we explore what Google does and how your site ends up in the search results. Search engines like Google follow links. Google follows links from one web page to another web page. Google’s crawlers spider more than a billion pages every day. A search engine like Google consists of: 1. a crawler 2. an index 3. an algorithm. For Google to know of the existence of your website, there first has to be a link from another site – one Google already knows – to your site. Following that link will lead to the first crawler-session and the first save in the index. After indexing your website, Google can show your website in the search results. Google has a specific algorithm that decides which pages it will show in which order. It’s very important to have a basic understanding of how Google and most other search engines use links: they use the number of links pointing to a page to determine how important that page is. Both internal links (from the own website) as well as external links (from other websites) can help a website to rank high in Google. What is a focus keyphrase? - Yoast SEO for WordPress training

05:58
Yoast SEO for WordPress training: This video is part of the Yoast SEO for WordPress training course by Yoast Academy. Take the full course at https://yoa.st/3f- to learn how the Yoast SEO plugin can make you rank better. In this training, we discuss the ins and outs of the Yoast SEO plugin. We’ll guide you through the features and teach you what the best settings for your website are. And of course, we’ll show you how you can optimize a post or page in the editor (both the classic editor and the new block editor are taken into account). About this video: This video is all about the focus keyphrase. The focus keyphrase is the search term that you most want your page to rank for, so when people search for that keyword or phrase, they should find you. A focus keyphrase can be a word, like ‘ballet’, but also a phrase, like ‘ballet shoes for kids’. When you optimize your blog post for a specific keyphrase, it’s important that people actually search for that keyphrase. If they’re not, you will be doing a lot of hard work for nothing. But how do you choose the right focus keyphrase? There are two things to consider when choosing your focus keyphrase: 1. Your audience: what are they searching for and which words are they using? You should get inside the heads of your audience and try to figure this out. You can use tools like Google Trends to help you with this. 2. Your competition: you have to focus on keyphrases that are not too competitive, otherwise you’ll have a hard time ranking. To check this, you can search for your proposed focus keyphrase in Google and see whether or not the post you want to write would stand out from the other results. Does your site have enough authority? There are several kinds of keyphrases. Some of them are rather generic, others are more specific. We distinguish three kinds of keyphrases: head keyphrases, mid tail keyphrases, and long tail keyphrases. Yoast Academy: Yoast Academy is the online learning platform for SEO by the makers of the biggest SEO plugin for WordPress: Yoast SEO. Ask Yoast: how to clean up old blog posts

01:35
Ben Anderson asks: “If you have a company blog with a lot of old posts that vary highly in relevance, can you describe a good process to follow when working through them and what actions to take when it comes to SEO?” Joost answers: “It’s fairly simple. You can go through all your old posts and you should probably do this every year or so, and look at each post and decide: is this still relevant or even factual? In that case keep it. Or: this not so relevant anymore, but there’s relevance to it, so it needs to be updated. In that case: update it, or make a list and update it one by one. Or: this is not relevant anymore, or it has so completely changed that I should write something new about it. In that case: delete it. If you delete it you have to consider what to do with the page you’ve just deleted. You can either redirect it to another relevant page on your site, if you have one. Or, if you don’t have a relevant page, maybe you should create one. If you can create a relevant page anymore, either redirect to the homepage or serve a so called 410 header, which is something that we make fairly easy to do within our Yoast SEO plugin. Good luck!” Having a question yourself? Email to [email protected]

Ask Yoast: should I optimize all of my product pages?

01:24
"In my online shop, should I aim to get the SEO 'green light' on each individual product?" - Gude Hudson-Gool Joost’s answer: “It depends. It depends on whether your products go away or if your products stay the same all the time. If your product stay the same over time it is actually worth optimizing each and every page. If they don’t stay the same over time, it actually depends on how big your shop is, whether you have the time to invest to optimize all those individual product pages. If you don’t have the time, spend that time on your category pages and on special pages for special events throughout the year that might encourage people to buy stuff from your shop. There are several approaches to get pages that might get people to buy your products, and your product pages are just one of them. And if those pages go away every time it’s not worth spending too much time on those and you should spend time on those category pages and those other pages.” https://yoa.st/3ez In the series ‘Ask Yoast’ we answer your SEO related question. Submit your question by sending an email to [email protected] and you might get a personal answer on video!

Yoast structured data blocks (block editor) - Yoast SEO for WordPress training

03:19
Yoast SEO for WordPress training: This video is part of the Yoast SEO for WordPress training course by Yoast Academy. Take the full course at https://yoa.st/3k-to learn how to best use Yoast SEO in the new WordPress 5.0 block editor. This training is interesting for you if you: - want to make sure you take full advantage of Yoast SEO in the block editor; - don’t want to waste time figuring things out yourself; - want to stay on top of all new features of the Yoast SEO plugin. The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practice actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. About this video: If you use the Yoast SEO plugin in the new WordPress block editor, you can add structured data blocks to your post. In the past, it was rather hard to implement these so-called structured data. Now, the Yoast SEO structured data blocks are going to make this a lot easier. What is structured data? Structured data is a piece of code that you add to your page to tell Google a little bit more about the content that is on that page. The code will help Google interpret your content. For example, structured data can indicate that a text follows a How-to structure with all kinds of steps, such as steps to bake a cake. Why should you add structured data? By adding structured data, you help Google interpret your content better. In return, Google will enrich your snippets. Snippets are the pieces of information that show up if you google something. They point you to sites that are related to your search query. A rich snippet shows more information than a regular snippet. Rich snippets can have pictures, ratings, time indications and much more. Therefore, rich snippets stand out from the crowd. And that could be very valuable if you want people to click on your snippet and lead them to your site. Why should you add Yoast structured data blocks? Adding structured data used to be hard. Now, Yoast SEO can add the code automatically for you. At the moment, you can choose between two types of blocks: How-to blocks and FAQ blocks. Just select the block and add the content. The code is then automatically added to the content. We’ve all been there. We encounter that page with every search we do. However, it’s not always clear what elements search results consist of exactly. Which of those results are paid for and which are not? And did you know you actively need to provide Google with extra information to create some of them? We’ll take you through the Google SERP and make sure you’re up to speed on the difference between paid results and organic results, snippets, featured results, Knowledge Graphs, and answer boxes. A standard snippet consists of three elements: 1. a title (in blue) 2. a URL or slug (in green) 3. a meta description (in black) In the meta description, you should give a clear description of what your page is about. Your meta description should entice users to click the result, so it’s hugely important. Sometimes, there’s more to these snippets than just the three elements we discussed above. A snippet could show extra information between the URL and the description. We call these snippets with extra information “rich snippets”. There are many different types of rich snippets, which we explore in this video. Lesson 3: Google and holistic SEO - SEO for beginners training

04:57
This video is part of the free SEO for beginners training course by Yoast Academy. Find the complete training at https://yoa.st/38t. In the SEO for beginners training course, we explain the very basics of SEO. The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practise actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the profession that attempts to optimize sites to make them appear in a high position in the organic search results. The rankings of these search results are determined by Google’s algorithm. Although Google’s algorithm remains secret, almost a decade of experience in SEO has resulted in a pretty good idea about the important factors. At Yoast, we practice what we call “holistic SEO”. Your primary goal should be to build and maintain the best possible website. Ranking in Google will come automatically if your website is of extremely high quality. Google wants to serve their customers. Their mission is to index all the world’s information and make it universally accessible. In addition to 1 this, Google, of course, wants to make money. To achieve this, they have to make sure people keep using Google. This means that they’ll have to show people results they are looking for. So if your website is the best in your market, Google wants to rank it high in the results. Permanently ranking well in Google demands an extensive SEO strategy focused on every aspect of your website and its marketing. The technical side, the User eXperience (UX), the content on your website: all need to be top notch. To keep ranking well in Google, you should develop – what we call – a holistic SEO approach. Lesson 16: What is structured data - SEO for beginners training

The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practice actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. If you want to enable Google to display rich results for your site, you have to use structured data. How this works exactly is beyond the scope of this course, but let’s get up to speed with a couple of key terms. Structured data is a piece of code that you can put on your website. It’s code in a specific format, written in such a way that a search engine understands it. Search engines read the code and use it to display search results in a specific way. The big search engines have developed a project called Schema.org. On Schema.org you can find all the structured data markup supported by the search engines. This makes Schema.org a large collection of pieces of code. You can use Schema.org to find the markup you need for your particular page. For instance, if you sell shoes on your site, you could show what color shoes you sell and what sizes you offer in your snippet. To find out more about the possibilities, take a look at http://schema.org/product. Lesson 11: The structure of your website - SEO for beginners training

06:32
This video is part of the free SEO for beginners training course by Yoast Academy. The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practise actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. Your site needs to have a clearly defined structure, because without it, it’ll just be a random collection of pages and blog posts. Structuring your website is crucial for both usability and findability. Many sites lack a sound structure to guide visitors to the product they’re looking for. Having a clear site structure also helps Google understand your site, so it’s incredibly important for your SEO. The first thing you should do in order to get a great site structure is divide the blog posts or product pages on your site into categories. Each post must be attached to at least one category. For example, categories for a blog can be ‘Books’, ‘Food’, ‘Music’, and ‘Travel’. In this example, the category ‘Books’ could be subdivided into the subcategories ‘Fiction books’ and ‘Nonfiction books’. Each category should be about the same size. Adding tags will also help your site structure. Tags are similar to categories, but they are generally used to describe your post in more detail. Tags exist in their own right and have no set relationship to anything else, so they can’t be arranged in a hierarchy. The use of tags is entirely optional. Ask Yoast: how many words should you write for a product page?

01:52
It's difficult to write 300 words about one single product if you're having, for example, a clothing store. Felisza asks: is having less than 300 words on one page bad? “That’s something I can relate to, especially if you sell a hundred different type of pants. The funny thing is, on a store, the 300 word length is probably quite a bit. The question is: A. Should you have that much text on the page or is there a lot of other content on a page that you could count in as well so you could do with a 150 or 200 words? B. Should you really be optimizing for this specific product or should you be optimizing the category page for which it is usually a lot easier to write 300 words than for the product page. So the question you have to ask yourself is twofold: A. Should I optimize the specific pants page? Or should I optimize the categorie page? B. Could I get away with 150 or 200 words because I have a lot of other content on the page? So if you have a lot of images or technical information about the product then you can usually get away with less content. The biggest thing I would say is: optimize the category page and don’t optimize the individual product pages that much. Good luck!” https://yoa.st/3f9 Do you have a SEO related question yourself? You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. In the first video of this course, we already discussed rich results briefly. In this video, we’ll dive deeper into the various kinds of rich results, and we’ll discuss the importance of rich results for SEO. Finally, we’ll explain how you can get rich results for your site. A search result can contain more information than just the regular title, slug, and meta description. For example, when you search for a funny cat video, the snippet may contain the thumbnail of the video, the duration of the video, the upload date, and the person who uploaded it. However, you can have rich snippets for all kinds of sites and search results. A rich snippet of a pizza recipe could contain a picture of the pizza, the rating and the number of votes, the preparation time and the number of calories. Moreover, if you search for a band, chances are you’ll get a list of upcoming gigs, showing the dates and venues. Sites who have smartly optimized for local searches can even make sure that you see gigs near you! The rich results we’ve discussed above are just some examples. There are all kinds of information you can provide to your searcher, depending on the market you’re in: reviews, prices, availability, opening hours, events, addresses, book or music genre, you name it. Lesson 4: Exploring holistic SEO - SEO for beginners training

05:28
This video is part of the free SEO for beginners training course by Yoast Academy. Find the complete training at https://yoa.st/38u. In the SEO for beginners training course, we explain the very basics of SEO. The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practise actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. A holistic approach to SEO means you focus on it all: proper keyword research, good technical SEO, a great user experience, writing quality content, a solid social media strategy and mobile optimization. Having an awesome website with high quality content and a great user experience will not instantly improve your ranking. In the long run, though, it will definitely affect your SEO positively! Attractive websites have a lower bounce rate and a much higher chance of receiving social media attention. These are exactly the two things you need to make sure your website will keep ranking well in the long run. If nobody ever talks about your website on social media, how can Google keep thinking it’s a good site? Awesome websites will also result in higher conversion rates. If your audience likes and understands your website, the chance of them buying your products or returning to your website is much higher. What’s important to remember is that you should mainly focus on your users and their experience of your site. Sure, you want your site to match what Google’s algorithm is looking for. Because Google’s mission is to find the best result, however, focusing on making a great site for your user will lead to the algorithm ranking you higher. As Google’s algorithm improves, it’s becoming increasingly proficient at awarding points for achieving that goal and giving penalties for trying to rank in other ways. Lesson 6: What is keyword research? - SEO for beginners training

04:54
This video is part of the free SEO for beginners training course by Yoast Academy. Find the complete training at https://yoa.st/3kk In the SEO for beginners training course, we explain the very basics of SEO. The training features videos, reading materials and quizzes to help you practise actual SEO skills. You’ll receive an official certificate and discounts to our other training courses after completion. Keyword research should be the first step of every SEO strategy. Before you write your website content, you need to think about which search terms you want to be found for. This means getting inside people’s heads, to find out which words they use when searching. You have to come up with an extensive list of keywords that you want your site to rank for. This is called doing keyword research. Proper keyword research is important because it will make clear which search terms your audience uses. At Yoast, we frequently come across clients who use one set of words when describing their products, while their target audience uses a completely different set of words. These sites aren’t found by their potential customers because of a mismatch in vocabulary. Of course, it doesn’t make any sense to optimize for words that people don’t use. Good keyword research makes sure that you use the words your target audience searches for to find you. This makes the whole effort of optimizing your website far more worthwhile. Ask Yoast: Comment systems and SEO

01:16
To allow your site's visitors to engage with your content you need a good comment system. There are many systems out there besides the WordPress standard comment system. So, what's their impact on SEO? This Ask Yoast goes into that! Interested in the Yoast Comment Hacks plugin? Find out more about it here: https://yoa.st/3j6 Max sent us his question on comment systems: 'There is no question that the Disqus service takes a little while to load on a webpage. So, do these blog commenting services, like Disqus, affect SEO in some way?' Watch the video or read the transcript below for the answer! The impact of comment systems on SEO: “Do they affect SEO? Well, yes, they do. Because, in fact, they’re so slow to load that most of the time, what you see is that Google doesn’t load the content of those comments, and doesn’t use them to rank that page. Which might be either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how good your comments are and whether your comments have a lot of content or not. I personally don’t like these services because they slow down the page load so much and because they make it slower for people to be able to respond to your content, which is why, on yoast.com, we use the plain vanilla WordPress commenting system with some added features that are in the Yoast Comment Hacks plugin, which we’ve released for free on the repository. So that’s why we use that, and not any service like Disqus. But I know there’s a lot of fans of services like Disqus because of all the other features they have. So it’s a trade-off. We made our choice, you have to make yours. Good luck!” Ask Yoast: In the series Ask Yoast, we answer SEO questions from our readers. Have an SEO-related question? Maybe we can help you out! Send an email to [email protected] Note: please check our blog and knowledge base https://kb.yoast.com/ first, the answer to your question may already be out there!
