Windows service installer with InstallShield LE

03:07
Windows service installer with InstallShield LE. How to make a installer with InstallShield LE, to install a windows service. Microsoft dropped their own installer in Visual Studio 2012. I don't know why because the installer they used up to Visual Studio 2010 worked just fine. It was limited compared to installshield, but it did its job. It is not very obvious on how to make an installer for a windows service software, you create your self in Microsoft Visual Studio. But when you know it, it only takes one little tick in a tick box to make the installer work for a windows service. I will demonstrate in this video how to how to create a installer in InstallShield LE for a Windows Service created in Visual Studio. I will also demonstrate that the installer created with InstallShield works. And will end the video by uninstalling the Windows Service. What you need to replicate what I do in this Video is: A computer running Microsoft Windows. Visual Studio 2012 InstallShield LE A Windows Service created in Visual Studio 2012. If you are into Linux, Debian in particular please visit my channel at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4BN24Up2rYC2f8dIBGBDZQ Windows Service: In Windows NT operating systems, a Windows service is a computer program that operates in the background.[1] It is similar in concept to a Unix daemon. A Windows service must conform to the interface rules and protocols of the Service Control Manager, the component responsible for managing Windows services. Windows services can be configured to start when the operating system is started and run in the background as long as Windows is running. Alternatively, they can be started manually or by an event. Windows NT operating systems include numerous services which run in context of three user accounts: System, Network Service and Local Service. These Windows components are often associated with Host Process for Windows Services. Because Windows services operate in the context of their own dedicated user accounts, they can operate when a user is not logged on. Stencyl - How to make a parallax scrolling background

03:52
Stencyl - How to make a parallax scrolling background A Short video demonstrating how to do a 3 layer parallax scrolling background in Stencyl. Parallax scrolling is a technique in computer graphics and web design, where background images move by the camera slower than foreground images, creating an illusion of depth in a 2D scene and adding to the immersion. The technique grew out of the multiplane camera technique used in traditional animation since the 1930s. Parallax scrolling was popularized in 2D computer graphics and video games by the arcade games Moon Patrol and Jungle Hunt, both released in 1982. Some parallax scrolling had earlier been used by the 1981 arcade game Jump Bug. Swift String Input in OS X (updated)

01:17
Swift String Input. This was done with Xcode 7.3.1 (and tested with Xcode 8) This is an update of my old video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DxkuV9mJ0A You can also get the written code at http://soltveit.org/swift-string-input-os-x/ Swift string input has become a lot easier than since I posted an article about it. In my previous article Swift string input required you to create your own function to read a input line. Then one viewer commented on my YouTube video a different method for Linux users. His method had a readLine function. When I tested this with Xcode in OS X it worked just fine. And I'm almost sure it wasn't that easy about a year ago. Enjoy the code!

Convert PDF to Word (updated): Using Google Drive To Convert PDF to Word Document

01:23
Convert PDF to Word: Using Google Drive To Convert PDF to Word Document. If there is anything you don't catch in the video. Please see below for written instructions. You do not need any special software to convert a normal pdf file to a Microsoft Word document. All you need is a google account and a web browser. It doesn't even matter what operating system you use. In this video I use Safari and OS X (Mac). But you can use Microsoft Windows or Linux instead. Any web browser able to access Google Drive is good enough. All you need to do is to log into your google account. You probably already are. And then upload your pdf file to your Google Drive. Once the pdf file is uploaded, you right click the pdf file and select open with Google Docs. Once open in Google Docs you have your document converted to text. It will also contain the pdf file pages as images, and it will convert all of the text into editable text. The select File - Download As - Microsoft Word (docx) Now you have your pdf file converted to a word document on your computer. There are special software made to do the same thing. But if this is good enough, spend your money on something else instead. For more videos, please see my channel at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4BN24Up2rYC2f8dIBGBDZQ Or my Linux playlist at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuYUP9Yiw0XuFyQ_lgA6E-nPK98TvdWO0 To access Google Drive directly, please go to: https://www.google.com/drive/ This is an updated version of the video of karim hamdadi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoW2jHoVdug), uses the latest Google Docs and shortened a lot. Debian 9 Static IP

01:57
This video shows how to set static IP address Debian 9 (Debian Stretch). By default after installation of Debian 9, your IP address will be dynamic. So how to assign static IP address in Debian 9? In this video, the example is shown on a local console. If you are working on an ssh connection, check my article. Basically, you down bring the network interface card down and up again. You will lose connection. Just do the changes in /etc/network/interfaces and reboot the server. That is the easiest way if working on an ssh connection. If working on a local console, just follow the video. The commands used in this video: ifdown ens3 (This will take the network interface down and release the IP) vim /etc/network/interface (Will open the vim editor and start editing the interface settings file). Press i to start edit in vim. When finished press ESC and then type :wq (include the :) to save the file and close vim. Nano might be easier to use than vim. service networking restart (To restart the networking service) ifup ens3 (Bring the network interface online again) ip a (is used to check the ip addresses for the network interfaces) This is how you do Debian 9 static IP. Debian Static IP: How to set static ip in Debian

01:42
Debian how to set static ip Written instructions here: http://soltveit.org/debian-static-ip/ This is a short video on how to set static ip on a fresh Debian linux machine. If you need to change your IP from Dynamic (DHCP) to static, I have presented a method here for doing it. There are other alternatives as well. You can reserve the IP in the router to a specific mac address. In Debian (and Ubuntu, just remember sudo) the network card is stored here: /etc/network/interfaces Its up to you if you want to back it up before you go on and edit it. Anyway, launch vim or something else you fancy. vim /etc/network/interfaces And it will probably look something like this: # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp auto eth0 That is how it looks when using a dhcp server instead of static ip. If we decide to use the ip 10.0.0.10 instead of a dynamic ip. And we want it to be able to talk to the internet, and the gateway is at 10.0.0.1. We replace the primary part with this: # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.0.0.10 gateway 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 10.0.0.0 # Not required broadcast 10.0.0.255 # Not required Then we need to restart the network card interface to activate the static ip. /etc/init.d/networking restart

Debian Lamp: - How to install a basic LAMP server in less than 3 minutes on Debian

02:21
Written instruction can be found here: http://soltveit.org/?p=48 This is a very basic lamp install on a minimal Debian install. You now have a server ready to run Wordpress and a lot of other cool web applications. Enjoy! Copied from my webpage: Setup a basic LAMP, enables you to host cool web applications. Guess Perl or Python should qualify as well. I assume you have done at least a minimal Debian installation here. Update & upgrade First we make sure our packages is updated and upgraded if necessary. apt-get update && apt-get upgrade Install Apache2 apt-get install apache2 Type in your ip in the browser to check if it is working. If the browser tell you "It is working" it is working 😉 Install MySQL apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client Installation will ask you to set a root password for the MySQL server. If you need root access from remote, check out this article. Install PHP apt-get install php5 php5-mysql Just in case, restart the apache server by /etc/init.d/apache2 restart Another method of restarting the apache server is: service apache2 restart. This work on Red Hat variants as well. Your web site root folder will be located at /var/www So if you create a file called test.php in the web root folder, and paste this: ?php phpinfo(); ? The line above here is missing a parentheses, but that is not allows in YouTube Descriptions. Then browser to - IP is just an example - http://192.168.1.20/test.php You should now see detailed information about your php setup. solron75

Steve Jobs about professional managers

00:38
Steve Jobs about professional managers. This clip is taken from Steve Jobs about Apple from 1985 interview. The younger Steve Jobs tells the truth about professional managers. In this short clip Steve Jobs reveals how Apples experience was with professional managers when they started to grow to a big company. And also who he thinks is the best managers. A lot of wisdom from Steve Jobs in this short clip. And is worth to think about. I'm pretty sure professional managers would not agree. I have the same experience. The best managers I had is those who were great individual contributors. Those were also in my opinion the most intelligent and creative managers. Absolutely worth to watch, and will take less than a minute of your live. Not the worst minute you could spend. - - - - - Steve Jobs Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American pioneer of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s (along with engineer, inventor, and Apple Computer co-founder, Steve Wozniak). Shortly after his death, Jobs's official biographer, Walter Isaacson described him as the "creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionised six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing." Stencyl Scrolltext

02:23
I could not find any programming tutorials on how to do scroll text with Stencyl. If you have lived as long as me, you might remember the damascene in the 80s and 90s. I first did this kind of stuff about 25 years ago on Amiga computers. Anyway here is how to do Stencyl Scrolltext. In my example project I used 800 x 600. You can of course use any resolution you want. Just for fun I did add a background picture here. But for this example it is not needed. Start by create a scene. I used 4 attributes in this example. - xPos (Number) - TextNo (Number) - ScrollText (Text) - endPos (Number) With this example you can edit the text as you like. The code will calculate the length of the text in pixels. And work out how far it need to scroll to make it disappear before displaying the next line of text. With this you have made the first step to a retro intro/demo (if that was your goal). Just add a background picture, some music and maybe a star field. And you have your self a nice little retro demo. You will find the link to download this code here: http://soltveit.org/stencyl-scrolltext-how-to-move-scroll-text/ Check out my other videos here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4BN24Up2rYC2f8dIBGBDZQ

Stencyl - How to create a vertical starfield in Stencyl

04:10
How to create a vertical starfield in Stencyl. A short video on how to create a vertical starfield in Stencyl. Only a few code lines is needed. Since we choose to move with random speed between 5 and 25, it will looks like we have stars in different layers. Making it look a bit like 3D instead of 2D. One behaviour is also added (Die on leaving screen) to prevent the starfield from becoming slow and sluggish. Since each star is an actor, they will just heap up on the edge of the screen if we dont chose to remove them after leaving the screen. Since the creation of stars is in the "on drawing" event on the main screen, it can be a lot of stars (depending on the resolution). To limit the stars to be created, I just added a random number from 1 to 4. And every time the number is 1 a new star should be "born". Check it out and see if it is something you could use. It is really easy to do. Enjoy! The "star" used is a 1x1 picture containing only one pixel. Should be simple enough to make in any graphic tool, from paint to photoshop. Maybe something you could use in game development, as a background thing. You will find more of my videos here: Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4BN... Swift - How to do swipe recognition

05:45
iOS gestures can be useful in your app. And here is a short demonstration on how to implement iOS gestures in your app. This example is done with Xcode 7.1 and compiled for iOS 9.1. Some of the code in the video is in the text below. But not correctly since some characters are not allowed to use in Youtube descriptions. You can find the code on my website at: http://soltveit.org/ios-gestures-in-swift-how-to/ Or at github here: https://github.com/solron/Swipe-Gesture It seems like iOS gestures require one recogniser for each direction. //Recogniser let swipeRight = UISwipeGestureRecognizer(target: self, action: "respond:") swipeRight.direction = .Right view.addGestureRecognizer(swipeRight) respond is the name of the handler or function to run the code. So anything you want happening when your user is swiping goes into that function. Like this, just an example to change the text in a label. // Respond function func respond(gesture: UIGestureRecognizer) lblDirection.text = "Right" enjoy!

Debian - How to install Webmin Check out this for written instructions and download link. http://soltveit.org/debian-install-webmin/ Current download link from SourceForge: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin_1.740_all.deb Webmin is a great little tool for admin your server from a web interface. And it's really easy to install. Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more. Webmin removes the need to manually edit Unix configuration files like /etc/passwd, and lets you manage a system from the console or remotely. Webmin homepage: http://www.webmin.com To download the package (version 1.740 which is current version): wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin_1.740_all.deb Configure: dpkg --install webmin_1.740_all.deb It will probably complain about missing dependencies now. And to fix that we will use apt-get to sort it out: apt-get install -f Happy admining! Debian Mysql: How to install a mysql server with remote access in Linux

03:12
Written instructions can be found here: http://soltveit.org/?p=43 Or scroll to the bottom of the video description. I recommend going to the link above, as youtube don't allow all characters in this descriptions. This is a quick video on how to install mysql with remote root access. This example is shown on a Debian 7 server. I don´t recommend anyone to run a mysql reachable from the internet with these settings! Bind it to a IP if you can, and protect it. A few simple steps to install MySQL with remote root access on a Debian system. Out of the box, as default, the root user can only log in from localhost. It’s easier to work from your laptop or workstation when your MySQL server is just a console based linux server. Either located on your home network or at a data center. Login to your server as root, and type: apt-get install mysql-server Select your desired root password, and let it finish the installation. When it’s done, type in: mysql -u root -p When you have logged into the MySQL Server, we will need to grant you with remote access rights. Kind of the whole purpose of this anyway. mysql GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'root'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'your password' WITH GRANT OPTION; mysql FLUSH PRIVILEGES; mysql quit The MySQL server will now accept the root to be logged in from anywhere. But we need to make MySQL to accept connections from outside localhost. This is done by changing the bind in my.cnf. Type in: vim /etc/mysql/my.cnf (or you can use any other text editor. To install vim: apt-get install vim) Locate the line: bind-address = 127.0.0.1 and comment it out by putting a # at the beginning of the line. For safety I recommend binding it to your ip instead of removing the bind (or actually accept any ip).

Swift Change UIButton Text

02:12
How to in Swift change UIButton text? A common mistake, also done by myself some time ago, is to try to change it through an IBAction. You can use an IBAction, but probably not the way you think. A common mistake is to do something like this: button.text = "Some text" This will give a compiler error if you try something like that. I would make sense to be able to do it like that. Like in Visual Studio you can change text like that. For written instructions see this page: http://soltveit.org/swift-change-uibutton-text/

How to create a custom 404 message on Apache

03:37
How to create a custom 404 message on Apache You can find the written instructions here: http://soltveit.org/apache-custom-404-pages/ This example is done on a Debian machine. Should be the same on most Linux distros. Not sure if the AllowOverride setting is done the same way on all Linux distros (Or where the sites-available files are). The standard 404 (Page not found) is enough for telling someone the page they are looking for is not there. However you can use that 404 traffic to share funny pages, or redirect them to your main page. Or you can promote product, adverts and such. What ever you want to use your 404 traffic for. Here is how you do it. Ssh into your web server, if your not local, and navigate to your root folder of your website. Example: /var/www/example.com/ Create a .htaccess file if you don't have one from before. And add this to your .htaccess file. ErrorDocument 404 /404.html The above line says if a 404 error, go to 404.html. And this example assume the 404.html file is located in the website root folder. Example of a 404.html file: See the link above as YouTube doesn't allow brackets. Anyway, happy redirecting!

How to unblock sites like Piratebay

00:58
A short video tutorial on how to unblock sites likes piratebay. For a windows computer scroll down a bit to find the instructions. In Norway the government just banned access to Piratebay and 6 other sites. Mostly torrent and download sites containing video and music. The Movie/Music/Author industry got them banned, and all ISPs in Norway had to DNS block those sites. Luckily DNS blocking is the easiest block to get around by just swapping to OpenDNS, Google or even a private DNS that doesn't block sites. Several other countries has done the same thing. This Video is recorded on a MAC, but it should easily enough be done on a Windows computer. On a Windows 7 Computer, go to your control panel. 1. Go to the Control Panel. 2. Click Network and Internet - Network and Sharing Center - Change adapter settings. 3. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. ... 4. Select the Networking tab. ... 5. Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. ... 6. Click OK. And you are good to go. For Windows 8, go to this link: https://iihelp.iinet.net.au/Manually_Setting_DNS_Server Check out my other videos on my channel at: https://www.youtube.com/user/solron75/videos The Google DNS addresses: 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4

Debian 7 Teamspeak Server: How to install Teamspeak 3 server with autostart I have not tested this Teamspeak 3 (ts3 server) server install with auto start with Ubuntu. But it shouldn't be to different as Ubuntu is built on Debian. How to install Teamspeak 3 with autostart on a Debian 7 server. Written instructions and download link can be found here: http://soltveit.org/?p=503 Copied from my webpage at the link above: Here is a short description on how to install Teamspeak 3 in a safe manner on a Debian server. And how to auto start your Teamspeak 3 server, in case of restart or reboots. To find your version, click here to go to the official Teamspeak 3 download page. (I assume you already root or sudo in this example) First step: Download, extract and put the files in a suitable location. In this example I will use the current valid 64 bit linux Teamspeak 3 server. It might not be the latest when you read this. But I will try to update the version number from time to time. wget http://dl.4players.de/ts/releases/3.0... Extract the files and move them to a suitable location. In this case we will move them to /usr/local/teamspeak3/ tar -zxvf teamspeak3-server_linux-amd64-3.0.11.2.tar.gz mv teamspeak3-server_linux-amd64/ /usr/local/teamspeak3 Second step: Create an account to run Teamspeak 3 on, and change owner for the files. adduser -disabled-login teamspeak3 Then just confirm the user info. We now need to change ownership of the files to the teamspeak 3 account. chown -R teamspeak3:teamspeak3 /usr/local/teamspeak3 Third step: Make a symbolic link and put the script into startup. To make a symbolic link to our startup script. ln -s /usr/local/teamspeak3/ts3server_startscript.sh /etc/init.d/teamspeak3 And lets finaly put it into startup. update-rc.d teamspeak3 defaults Your Teamspeak 3 server is now ready for action. When you start the server for the first time, it will print out some pretty important information. Make sure you copy that and save it. If not, you will have to re-install it. It will only print it once. So lets start it. service teamspeak3 start Check my channel for more Debian videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/solron75... debian teamspeak server setup solron75

Stencyl change game folder

00:58
Stencyl change game folder. This example is done on a mac, but is similar on a windows computer. The default location for your stencyl game folder is /users/username/stencylworks/games So if your username is john it would be something like /users/john/stencylworks/games This can easily be changed to something else. If you prefer having them saved somewhere in your Documents folder, you can do that. Just create a folder in your Documents folder. You can do that before, or you can create the folder when you change default stencyl game folder in Stencyl. So if we create a folder called stencylworks in Documents. The complete path would be /users/john/Documents/stencylworks/games After you have created the new stencyl game folder in Documents, open Stencyl. Don't open any games. Because you can not change the stencyl game folder when a game is open. Go to preferences and select workspace. At the bottom half at in the preference windows you will see "Workspace Folder". And you will see the path for where the stencylworks (stencyl game folder) folder is located. Click the view workspace button after the path, to open up the finder window. If you want to change location, just click the path and you will get a drop down and select "Chose folder". Then click "Apply changes" at the bottom of the screen. Xcode Swift: string input in swift

Xcode Swift: string input in swift A new updated video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-61SKCkTCkM Please go to http://soltveit.org/xcode-swift-string-input-in-command-line/ for a correct listening as YouTube doesnt allow all characters. When I first started with Swift, I didn't think that a Swift String Input would be a issue. But it seems like at the moment there is no methods of getting a string input from terminal or console. You will have to use some Objective C statements to achieve this. They are easily accessible so there is no problem in getting them. You can paste this code and create your own Input method. Here is the Swift String input code: func input() - String { var keyboard = NSFileHandle.fileHandleWithStandardInput() var inputData = keyboard.availableData return (NSString(data: inputData, encoding: NSUTF8StringEncoding) as! String) } The way you want to use this, is about the same way as with some sort of C language. print("Enter: ") var string1 = input() println("You typed: " + string1) You can also do it in a "one liner" if you only need to do it once. If you need to do this more than once, I would just go with the first method. Because the printing of the result is also a bit more to it now, as you need to convert it from a NSString to a string. println("Enter 2: ") var string2 = NSString(data: NSFileHandle.fileHandleWithStandardInput().availableData, encoding: NSUTF8StringEncoding) println("You Typed: " + (NSString(string: string2!) as! String)) And that was the second method. This is one way to get a swift string input. Beware if you just press enter, and pass in an empty string. There might be some trouble in your code.

Stencyl - How to create a simple starfield in Stencyl

03:15
Stencyl - How to create a simple starfield in Stencyl. This short video shows you how to create a simple 2d (with a 3d look) starfield, coming towards you. All it takes is two lines of code to create this starfield, and one behaviour to kill the "stars" after they leave the screen. If you dont kill the actors after they left the screen, the star field will very quickly become sluggish and slow. The "star" used is a 1x1 picture containing only one pixel. Should be simple enough to make in any graphic tool, from paint to photoshop. Add a background music and a scroll text, and you have a simple old school intro ;) Enjoy! You will find more of my videos here: Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4BN24Up2rYC2f8dIBGBDZQ Or have a look at my webpage, where there is a variety of tutorial and resources: http://soltveit.org If you dont have Stencyl and want to try it out, check here: http://www.stencyl.com If you want a place to publish your "flash games", check here: http://www.newgrounds.com

Ubuntu Lamp: Ubuntu How to install a LAMP server in less than 2 minutes

02:00
Ubuntu How to install a LAMP server in less than 2 minutes Written instruction can be found here: http://soltveit.org/debian-basic-lamp/ It is originally written for Debian, but it works just as fine for Ubuntu. please see the link above for the accurate written instruction. YouTube doesn't allow all type of characters in the description field. This is a very basic lamp install on a Ubuntu 14.10 install. You now have a server ready to run Wordpress and a lot of other cool web applications. Enjoy! Setup a basic LAMP, enables you to host cool web applications. LAMP is Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP (guess Perl or Python should qualify as well). Install PHP apt-get install php5 php5-mysql Just in case, restart the apache server by /etc/init.d/apache2 restart Another method of restarting the apache server is: service apache2 restart (this work on Red Hat variants as well) Your web site root folder will be located at /var/www So if you create a file called test.php in the web root folder, and paste this: ?php phpinfo(); ? Then browser to (IP is just an example) http://192.168.1.20/test.php You should now see detailed information about your php setup. If you are looking for Debian videos (most of them are just the same for Ubuntu) please see my Debian playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuYUP9Yiw0XuFyQ_lgA6E-nPK98TvdWO0 Or go to my channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4BN24Up2rYC2f8dIBGBDZQ
