Simple act of kindness: student pays off school lunch debt

Simple act of kindness: student pays off school lunch debt You hear a lot about bullying and other social problems in schools. But it just takes one student to make a difference. Today, we honor third grader Cayden Taipalus as Detroit 2020 Person of the Week. The 8-year-old is a student at Challenger Elementary in Howell. Cayden has been collecting donations and taking bottles back to help pay off school lunch debt for some of the students at his elementary school. Cayden first had the idea for the cause when he witnessed one of his friends get denied a hot lunch because he didn't have enough money on his account. If students don't have money, the school will provide an alternate lunch, but Cayden knows that every student feels better when they have a few dollars in their lunch account. Pay child support for a kid that is not yours or go to jail

02:02
DETROIT (WXYZ) - The state told a Detroit man: Pay child support for a kid that is not yours or go to jail! On Friday, 7 Action News went with him as he turned himself in at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. “I stayed up all night. Couldn’t sleep thinking about it,” said Carnell Alexander. Carnell says no matter what the state orders, he won’t pay child support for a child he doesn’t know and that DNA tests prove isn’t his. “I haven’t even had a chance to speak to him except for one time when we took a DNA test,” said Carnell. This is a case that started in the late eighties. An ex-girlfriend of Carnell’s had a baby. She needed help providing for the child. She was told that in order to get welfare she had to name a dad on paperwork. She put down Carnell’s name. The state then started a paternity case against Carnell to collect money for the assistance provided. A process server turned in paperwork saying Carnell was given notice at a house in Highland Park. It is something the Michigan Department of Corrections says is impossible. At the time, Carnell was incarcerated for a crime he committed as a young man. Carnell says he would find out about the paternity action in 1991 when he was arrested for being a deadbeat dad during a traffic stop. He has been fighting it since. Angry Judge tells convicted murderer "I hope you die in prison"

02:44
JACKSON, Mich., (WXYZ) - If a judge could throw the book at a woman, he managed to do so on Wednesday. Not physically, but certainly by his stinging words. He had a lot of words for 31-year-old Camia Gamet, the woman convicted of killing her boyfriend Marcel Hill in March. Gamet claimed it was self defense and showed no remorse. A First Degree murder conviction by law meant she would get life behind bars. Still, while family members spoke she would only roll her eyes and laugh, but Jackson County Circuit Court Judge John McBain would have none of it. "You're gonna shut your mouth or I'm going to have some duct tape put on it," said Judge McBain. A jury convicted Gamet for stabbing and beating to death Hill. Her lawyer argued she acted in self defense, because she claimed she killed an unknown attacker in a dark room. The judge wasn't buying that and called it the worst cold-blooded murder he's ever seen. The prosecutor argued Gamet's actions were premeditated and deliberate. She stabbed Hill 11 times and had a history of violence against him. Hill told police in March of 2013 she hit him in the head with a hammer. Family members say justice was served and they hope a lesson was learned about how abuse can come in all forms no matter the gender.
