Three Teens Arrested For Waiting While Black

Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/14crV4D A police officer arrested three teens last week as they were standing outside a store in downtown Rochester, New York. Their crime: Waiting for a school bus. The three boys — Raliek Redd, 16, Deaquon Carelock, 16, and Wan'Tauhjs Weathers, 17 — are star athletes at Edison Tech high school, and were waiting to be taken to a basketball game when they were spotted by an officer. It seems the store adjacent to their pick-up spot was being monitored by police due to past complaints from the owner of teens loitering outside. The officer asked the teens to disperse, but they explained that they were waiting to be picked up by a bus. The officer again asked the teens to disperse. "We tried to tell them that we were waiting for the bus," Wan'Tauhjs told WHEC. "We weren't catching a city bus, we were catching a yellow bus. He didn't care. He arrested us anyways." The three were charged with with disorderly conduct and obstructing the sidewalk. While they were being handcuffed, their coach, Jacob Scott, arrived at the scene and attempted to reason with the cop. "He goes on to say, 'If you don't disperse, you're going to get booked as well," Scott recalled. "I said, 'Sir, I'm the adult. I'm their varsity basketball coach. How can you book me? What am I doing wrong? Matter of fact, what are these guys doing wrong?'" A school board member has since come out in defense of the arrested teens, saying this is not a new phenomenon. "I'm very concerned about a pattern of young people being abused by police authority," Rochester City School Board Member Mary Adams is quoted as saying. "To me, this seems like a really clear case, part of a pattern." The boys were scheduled to enter their plea before a judge last Friday, but their hearing has been postponed until December 11. Why Your Baby Looks Like Your Ex - Shocking New Research

01:48
If you were to spend time in a maternity ward listening to proud new parents, you’d definitely hear them discussing their offspring’s genetic heritage. Does the new baby have her eyes or his? Could that be great Uncle Charlie’s nose? What you won’t often witness is the father turning tenderly to the mother and murmuring, “Hey, he looks just like Phil! You know, your ex? With the motorbike, and sociopathic tendencies?” But new research suggests that this scenario is more plausible than it sounds. It has been shown that newborns may resemble a mother’s previous sexual partner, after scientists at the University of South Wales observed an instance of telegony – physical traits of previous sexual partners being passed down to future children. The researchers found that, for fruit flies, the size of the offspring matched the size of the first male the mother mated with – not its biological father. It is thought that molecules of the semen produced by the first partner might be absorbed by the mother’s immature eggs. “We don’t know yet whether this applies to other species,” explains author of the study, Dr. Angela Crean. Too late, Dr Crean! I’m already working my way through a mental Powerpoint presentation of my exes and trying to work out whether I can travel back in time with a box of Durex. The idea of our unborn children resembling partners past might initially fill us with horror, no matter how amicably your relationship ended. Your ex is not supposed to lurk inside you, waiting to burst forth in miniature form. This idea is scarier than Alien. I’m sure plenty of prospective mothers feel incredibly guilty about the fact that they might be, unwittingly, about to fill the world with children who blow their nose on their sleeves, claim they have a moral objection to booking restaurants, and pronounce the eighth letter of the alphabet “haitch”. However, if the hypothesis holds, it might not be entirely bad news. Whether we like it or not, the people we choose to date, and sleep with, reflect something of ourselves. It’s easy to write off past relationships in the same way we shudder at old pictures in which you’re wearing embellished, stonewashed denim. “Past me was such an idiot!” I often think. “I’m much wiser now.” But we ought to give our old selves more credit for doing what seemed right at the time – or at least acknowledge the fact that every decision which feels right now could seem just as foolish in five years. I decided to compare this data point against the most famous artists in hip hop. I used each artist's first 35,000 lyrics. That way, prolific artists, such as Jay-Z, could be compared to newer artists, such as Drake. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Subscribe To The Fowler Show: http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation 2. Teen Graduates High School & College In Same Week

Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow Graduating from high school at 16 is impressive enough. But managing to get your college degree before you even graduate high school? Astounding. Grace Bush is clearly a rare talent, both intelligent and incredibly hard working. The Florida teen recently earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Florida Atlantic University. Later this week, she'll get her high school diploma from Florida Atlantic University High School. So how does somebody graduate from college before high school? Grace participated in Florida Atlantic University's dual enrollment program, which allows gifted high school students to earn college credit for the same courses. Students (and parents, who may foot the bill) save both time and money. Grace admits that the order in which she is getting her diplomas is a little wacky. "It's kind of weird that I graduated college before high school," she told CBS Miami. Grace, who is one of nine children, began her college career at 13 and studied through the summers in order to graduate early. She also participates in two orchestras, where she plays the flute. Now that you feel like a total slacker, more about Grace. Her mother, Gisla Bush, told CBS Miami that she home-schooled all of her kids (somebody buy this woman something nice for Mother's Day). Grace showed her talents for picking things up quickly from an early age, according to her mom. "At 2 years old, she was already reading, and I was totally shocked," she said. Up next for Grace: a master's degree followed by law school. She said she'd eventually like to be chief justice of the United States. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Quantify Your Pro-Con List to Make Better Decisions

01:42
A pro-con list is usually the place to start when it comes to tough decisions. These lists are nothing new, but here’s an interesting way to make them more useful: quantify every item on the list, then add it all up. In his book, Get Smarter: Life and Business Lessons entrepreneur Seymour Schulich has an effective way of making decisions based on a pro-con list. Instead of just writing down a standard list of things to mull over, you give a numeric value of importance to each item. He explains the process: On one sheet of paper, list all the positive things you can about the issue in question, then give each one a score from zero to ten—the higher the score, the more important it is to you. On another sheet, list the negative points, and score them from zero to ten—only this time, ten means it’s a major drawback...If the positive score is at least double the negative score, you should do it—whatever “it” is. But if the positives don’t outweigh the negatives by that two-to-one ratio, don’t do it, or at least think twice about it. I actually use a method similar to this, but I don’t use Schulich’s double metric for making the decision. My pro number simply has to surpass the con number. But I think Schulich’s rule may actually be a better gauge, because it accounts for optimism bias—our habit of exaggerating the upside of something. LEGOs Wash Up On Beaches 17 Years After Spill

02:29
When people go to the beach, they commonly have a good time combing through the sand for things like shells and sand dollars. But for people on the shores of Cornwall, England, time is spent on the beach searching for something entirely different: Legos. On February 13, 1997 the Tokio Express shipping vessel was rocked by an enormous wave. The wave sent the ship pitching and rolling to severe angles, and over 60 shipping containers were tossed overboard. One of those shipping containers was filled with 4.8 million pieces of Lego, and those pieces have been slowly making their way back to land ever since. The BBC caught up with Cornwall resident Tracey Williams recently and talked with her about the Legos that keep washing ashore. As fate would have it, many of the spilled Legos are sea items like cutlasses, dragons, flippers, and spears. "There's stories of kids in the late 1990s having buckets of dragons on the beach, selling them," Williams told the BBC. "These days the holy grail is an octopus or a dragon. I only know of three octopuses being found, and one was by me, in a cave in Challaborough, Devon. It's quite competitive. If you heard that your neighbour had found a green dragon, you'd want to go out and find one yourself." U.S. oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer spoke to the BBC about the strange Lego appearances and says the story has taught him a key lesson: you never know where something lost in the ocean might turn up. "The most profound lesson I've learned from the Lego story is that things that go to the bottom of the sea don't always stay there," Ebbesmeyer said. "The incident is a perfect example of how even when inside a steel container, sunken items don't stay sunken. They can be carried around the world, seemingly randomly, but subject to the planet's currents and tides. "Tracking currents is like tracking ghosts - you can't see them. You can only see where flotsam started and where it ended up." - See more at: http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/legos-still-turning-beaches-england-17-years-after-spill#sthash.eeSZ8hES.dpuf Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Salt Is Not Your Enemy. Guess What Is?

02:24
A new study in the American Journal of Cardiology was conducted by Saint Luke's cardiologist James O'Keefe of the Mid-America Heart Institute and James DiNicolantonio, also of the Mid-America Heart Institute. The researchers found that sugar, not salt, is the true enemy of heart health. O'Keefe stated that "the number one demon in our diet that's making us sick and overweight and depressed and unhealthy is sugar, added sugar." The reason he gave is that sugar makes us hungry all the time and tends to boost our craving for more sweets. "If I could say one of the simple things people can radically do to improve their health is to don't eat anything with added sugar,” O'Keefe said. So how did salt get fingered as the culprit? Back in 2001, the National Institutes of Health published an oft-cited study called the DASH-sodium study, which found that participants who consumed less sodium than the control group ended up with lower blood pressure. That study put salt on the hit list for America's dietary guidelines. But it turns out that other studies have failed to produce the same result. Some experts are now suggesting that cutting back on salt is actually bad for your health. They propose that your body needs sodium, and if it is deprived, the kidney secretes an enzyme called renin that can lead to hypertension. Some studies have found that low sodium levels may actually boost the chance of heart failure. In 2011, Scientific American went full-throttle with an article defending salt and suggesting that hypersensitivity to salt among some elderly individuals and African Americans has unduly cast a shadow on something that is no problem for most of us. At the very least, it seems fair to say that the eat-less-salt argument is controversial, and that the link between salt and heart disease does not appear to be as strong as American public health officials may have believed. Unless we have some special sensitivity, we may not need to consign ourselves to the hell of unsalted peanuts. Thank goodness. New Antibiotic Discovery Is A Game Changer

03:50
The rise of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics is a growing worry and threatens to put healthcare back to the early 20th century. Such resistance to drugs was inevitable, because bacteria evolve and learn to defend themselves. But we are worried now because new classes of antibiotics aren’t being found. Now we may have to worry a little less. Researchers have discovered a new drug, called teixobactin, which marks the launch of a new class of antibiotics. Better still, they show that even highly sensitive bacteria may not easily develop resistance to this new antibiotic. Beyond the discovery of the drug, their study published in Nature is remarkable for another reason. The technology developed by these researchers could herald the discovery of many new classes of antibiotics. How iChip works In a single scoop of soil, bacteria and fungi number in the millions. They also come in thousands of varieties, and survive by fighting each other. We know this because for the past century, several newly discovered antibiotics have been found by isolating them from the bacteria and fungi that produce them to defend their own lives. The trouble, however, is that only about 1% of the microbes in the soil (or sea water) can be reliably grown under lab conditions. This means that so far we have not been able to study the remaining 99%, which are bound to produce antibiotics unknown to us. This is the problem Kim Lewis and Slava Epstein at Northeastern University in Boston and colleagues have been busy trying to solve. After more than a decade of work, they have a solution in the iChip technology. To make it work, a sample of soil is diluted and then poured on the iChip, which consists of hundreds of small holes. Because of the dilution, it is hoped that only one microbe is caught in each hole. Human Trials For Anti-Aging Drug Are Promising

01:47
David Sinclair of Harvard University has been working toward a molecular fountain of youth. Finding previous success in mice, early human trials have begun in small studies around the globe. Preliminary results of these studies indicate that the treatments are safe and do not induce major adverse side effects, but it is still far too early to tell if the treatments will actually be effective at reversing aging in humans. A normal part of human aging involves senescence, which is a general wearing out of the body over time. Muscles begin to lose tone and become inflamed over time, and they also can develop insulin resistance. Without being able to use insulin, the cells aren’t able to uptake the glucose needed for activity. These problems contribute to why many elderly people have trouble getting around and athletes aren’t able to sustain certain levels of activity as they age. Last December, Sinclair’s group published a paper in Cell revealing that they had been able to drastically reduce the functional “age” of muscle tissue. Treating the mice with the metabolic co-enzyme NAD+ effectively reversed the aging process within the skeletal muscle by increasing muscle tone and producing effects similar to eating a healthy diet and exercising. Legal Weed, One Year Later $40m Saved! - News By The Numbers

03:10
Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation One year ago, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed an executive order ratifying the overwhelming victory Amendment 64, the nation's first statewide vote to end marijuana prohibition. At that moment the personal use, possession and home-cultivation of small amounts of marijuana became legal in the Centennial State for adults 21 years of age and older. The headlines over the last year have understandably focused on the implementation of Amendment 64's unprecedented framework to regulate and tax sales of marijuana to adults. After all, Amendment 64 doesn't simply remove criminal penalties; it creates the world's first legal market for marijuana, licensing cultivation, processing and retail outlets. Reducing criminal penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana does not alone address the inherent harms of prohibition -- the enormous unregulated market, the unequal application of the laws, especially for people of color, and unregulated products of unknown potency and quality. Moreover, creating a state-based market for legal marijuana sales raised the prospect of a direct conflict with federal prohibition. That issue however was basically settled when the Department of Justice issued guidelines in August that gave Colorado a cautious green light to proceed without imminent threat of interference by the feds. In the midst of all the attention-grabbing focus on regulation and new tax revenue, we shouldn't forget that Amendment 64 removed criminal penalties and increased personal freedom for Coloradans. A year ago the regime of marijuana prohibition in Colorado was forever changed. Law enforcement and judicial culture and policies adapted to the will of the people. According to the Colorado Center on Law and Policy, by removing criminal penalties the state has saved anywhere from $12 million to $40 million dollars over the last year. (Others have estimated the state spends over $60 million enforcing marijuana prohibition at the levels now legal, so the CCLP estimate is probably on the conservative side.) Over the last decade, the state has averaged over 10,000 arrests and citations per year for minor marijuana possession at the levels now legal in the state. Because of Amendment 64 and the simple decriminalization of marijuana in the state over the last year, 10,000 primarily young adults will likely not be hindered by the collateral consequences of a drug charge. Noxious racial disparities in marijuana law enforcement will also likely decrease dramatically. In places like Arapahoe County, whose population is 10 percent black, African Americans comprised 35 percent of minor marijuana arrests. In Denver, blacks were almost four times as likely to be arrested for low-level marijuana possession, even though they are no more likely to use marijuana than whites. In the metro area, Latinos were twice as likely to be arrested for marijuana despite rates of consumption actually lower than both whites and blacks. Nationally we average over 750,000 marijuana arrests each year -- something like one every 37 seconds -- nearly half of all drug arrests in the country. Almost 90 percent of these arrests are for simple possession for personal use, not sale or manufacture. Police make far more arrests for marijuana possession each year than for all violent crimes combined. Colorado has removed itself from this immense waste of resources, and life altering criminal justice consequences, that persistently defines marijuana prohibition. The voters of Colorado did the right thing last year. They helped lead the nation to a new way to control marijuana, focus scarce law enforcement resources and increase fairness in the criminal justice system. We don't have to wait to celebrate this New Year's Day when legal sales of marijuana begin. We mark this one-year anniversary of hard-won freedoms and declare that Colorado has already won. There Are 1.5 Million Missing Black Men in the United States

04:02
According to a sweeping new New York Times report, one out of every six black men in the United States is missing. 1.5 million black males between the ages of 25 and 54 have disappeared from free society, mostly as a result of death or jail. What makes these numbers even more staggering is the fact that the death rates of young black men have continually dropped since the 1990s. Despite the decrease in homicides, United States prison populations have increased since 1980, the report notes. There has seemingly been an increases in discussions about the racial disparities of our society, as a result of recent high-profile police shootings. The gap of missing people is even wider in the places that have become associated with cop violence recently: North Charleston, where Walter Scott was shot, has a more severe gap than the national average. Ferguson, Missouri has the largest gap, with over 10,000 black men missing. According to a ProPublica analysis, "The 1,217 deadly police shootings from 2010 to 2012 captured in the federal data show that blacks, age 15 to 19, were killed at a rate of 31.17 per million, while just 1.47 per million white males in that age range died at the hands of police." First Hint Of 'Life After Death' In Biggest Ever Scientific Study

02:19
Death is a depressingly inevitable consequence of life, but now scientists believe they may have found some light at the end of the tunnel. The largest ever medical study into near-death and out-of-body experiences has discovered that some awareness may continue even after the brain has shut down completely. It is a controversial subject which has, until recently, been treated with widespread scepticism. But scientists at the University of Southampton have spent four years examining more than 2,000 people who suffered cardiac arrests at 15 hospitals in the UK, US and Austria. And they found that nearly 40 per cent of people who survived described some kind of ‘awareness’ during the time when they were clinically dead before their hearts were restarted. Ft. Lauderdale Decided To Criminalize Homelessness

02:53
Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow A backpack. Spare clothes. A notebook. Some keepsake photos. Crackers. Though they may not have a home in which to secure their stuff, homeless people still have possessions like everyone else. Yet the city of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida is on the cusp of passing a new regulation that would make it illegal for anyone to store their personal things on public property. Specifically, it would empower police to confiscate any personal possessions stored on public property, provided they have given the homeless person 24-hours notice. If the homeless people wish to retrieve their items, they must pay the city "reasonable charges for storage and removal of the items," though that fee is waived if the person is able to demonstrate he or she cannot afford to pay. The city may dispose of any possessions not retrieved within 30 days. One of the driving factors behind the measure, according to the legislation, is the city's "interest in aesthetics." Last week, the City Commission gave unanimous preliminary approval to the measure, despite overwhelming opposition from local residents who testified. One woman, Gazol Tajalli, told Commissioners that is "insanity that we are even here discussing whether an individual can put on the ground the few objects that they own." Another citizen, Rev. Gail Tapscott of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ft. Lauderdale, criticized some of the Commissioners for "demoniz[ing]" the homeless. Maria Foscarinis, Executive Director of the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty, chastised Ft. Lauderdale's approach. "Maintaining city streets is a legitimate concern, but simply punishing homeless people for leaving their possessions in public places is not an effective or humane way to address it," she told ThinkProgress. "Instead, city and business leaders should work with advocates and homeless people to develop alternative short and long term solutions, such as public storage options for homeless people and affordable housing." According to the Sun Sentinel, "The commission's actions were backed by business leaders who said they were looking for some controls on a situation that scares away customers and makes visitors uncomfortable." The commission is also considering other initiatives targeting the homeless, including stiffer penalties for urinating or defecating in public, prohibitions on panhandling at intersections or sleeping in public, and restrictions on charity groups that hand out food to the homeless. Ft. Lauderdale is not the only city to embrace new ordinances that criminalize people for being homeless. Scores of cities, including Columbia, Palo Alto, Miami, Raleigh, Tampa, Harrisburg, and others have enacted measures that render homeless people simply trying to survive as criminals. Other cities, like Davis, California, are taking a different approach: constructing public lockers where homeless people can safely store their possessions. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Harvard Lampoon Trolls Trump With Fake Endorsement

01:57
In late July, Donald Trump met with representatives of Harvard’s student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson, for a photo op and a campaign endorsement at Trump Tower. There were two slight problems though: the students he met were not from The Crimson, and the endorsement was actually part of an elaborate prank between student publications. The students who met The Donald were actually from Harvard Lampoon, a satirical magazine with a historical rivalry with The Crimson, who decided to rope Trump in in order to prank them both. As part of the student rivalry, the two organizations have a long history of attempting to steal each other’s icon. The Crimson‘s piece is the wooden president’s chair, and for The Lampoon, it’s a metal Ibis bird that stands atop their building. The Crimson editors arrived at their office one day in late June, and found that their desk had been stolen, having been broken out of the chains that kept it from their rivals. During that time, the chair was being moved by the “Poonsters” to New York, where they asked Trump to sit while he was receiving them. Several weeks later, a fake website bearing The Crimson masthead went live, showing Trump at the reception and a rave review to match: Donald J. Trump is known as a celebrity above all, and although some voters see his celebrity as an indication of style over substance, we would argue that this style is the very substance that elevates his candidacy above the rest of the GOP field. Trump’s unique brand of media ubiquity—whether on social media or primetime TV— lends him a highly valuable ability to both understand what Americans want and enact change to satisfy those needs. Sallie Mae Finally Announces Student Loan Settlement Deal

The Justice and Education departments on Tuesday announced a $60 million settlement with Sallie Mae and related companies, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. announced a separate $37 million settlement with Sallie Mae Bank and Navient Solutions, Inc., over deceptive lending practices and violations of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. Why Did AOL Let AIM Die?

02:45
Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow As a company, AOL has made some horrible decisions. Slightly worse than its merger with Time Warner—one of the biggest disasters in American business history—was its decision to let its incredibly popular messaging client, AIM, wither and die. This is why that happened. In a story at Mashable, AIM developers Barry Appelman, Eric Bosco and Jerry Harris portray the program as AOL's neglected stepchild. AOL never embraced AIM—despite it amassing millions of users and predicting a number of internet functions—for one main reason: it didn't make AOL any money. In its heyday, AOL was a subscription service, charging users hourly and then eventually monthly fees in order to access the internet. AIM, on the other hand, was a free service, and was seen as relatively worthless by company executives. One of the engineers explains it this way: "AIM was never really embraced by AOL because of the innovator's dilemma, what I call the cash cow dilemma," Appelman said. The "innovators dilemma" is the idea that companies become too focused on things that currently make them money and fail to develop technology that will keep the business thriving in the future. AOL was unable to see that its business model would soon become obsolete and that its entire worldview of the internet was backwards. Now, users themselves are currency: Facebook, for instance, bought Instagram for a billion dollars simply to gobble up its user base. In February it purchased the worldwide messaging app WhatsApp for $19 billion for the same reason. AIM was essentially WhatsApp at one point, and it might have continued to be had AOL nurtured it. According to Jason Abbruzzese, the article's author, this is not lost on AIM's developers: WhatsApp came up a number of times during the course of his conversation with them. Meanwhile, the rest of us have migrated to Gchat or wherever, while AIM is merely a carcass left to be picked apart by nostalgia vultures. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Seventh-Day Adventists Live 10 Years Longer Than Other Americans

01:54
Statistics have shown that religion makes people happier, but it turns out it can help you live longer, too. In an attempt to "reverse engineer longevity," Dan Buettner has spent years researching the parts of the world where people live much longer than average. Most of those locations are outside the United States -- including Sardinia, Italy, and Okinawa, Japan -- but there is one long-living group stateside. It's the Seventh-day Adventists, who live an average of 10 years longer than the American life expectancy of about 79 years. Buettner, whose work is part of the Blue Zones Project, joined HuffPost Live's Caitlyn Becker on Wednesday to explain what Seventh-day Adventists do right. That includes eating a plant-based diet and having "a social network that reinforces the right behavior." Their religious beliefs are also a big help, he said. "They take this idea of Sabbath very seriously, so they're decompressing the stress," Buettner said. "About 84 percent of health care dollars are spent because of bad food choices, inactivity and unmanaged stress, and they have these cultural ways of managing stress through their Sabbath." Presenting New Ideas To Your Boss

02:08
You have a great idea for a new project—a marketing initiative that’s going to reach new audiences, a revamped tagline for a flagging product, or an efficient new way to organize the team's records. You’re probably feeling excited (way to innovate!) and slightly apprehensive (um, how exactly am I going to convince my boss it’s worthwhile?). Remember, pitching a project to your boss is like pitching anything else—you need to look at the cost-benefit analysis from his or her perspective. To sway your supervisor that your brainchild is the way to go, be prepared with answers to the questions that will be on his or her mind. 1. When Will You Find the Time? The introduction of any new project obviously means additional demands on your time. So, the first thing you will want to assure your boss of is that it won’t distract from all of the work already on your plate. Phrasing this actually takes a more delicate balance than you may imagine. Seem too busy, and your boss may suggest you hold off on a new initiative, but make it seem like you have all the time in the world, and your supervisor may wonder what’s taken you so long to suggest additional tasks. So, the best approach is to explain how the new project fits into the cycle of your workload—for example, how it dovetails perfectly with the end the one seasonal task before you ramp up for the next. Try something like, “Last year, I had extra time on my hands after the winter recruitment push—I’d love to devote that time to exploring some new approaches before we really delve into the next phase this summer.” Don’t have a schedule that ebbs and flows? Present your boss with a plan to get work an hour earlier or shift hours from a less essential project. 2. How Does it Contribute to the Mission? Think about when you’re answering questions in a job interview: You want to focus on how your efforts will contribute to the organization, as opposed to how working for the organization will benefit you. Similarly, you’ll want to focus on how this project fits into the bigger picture—not just how it will add to your resume, but how it will advance the work of the organization as a whole. A great approach here is to talk about where the idea came from. Something inspired you to connect taking a certain course with doing your job better, right? Sharing this insight can help get your boss on the same page. Try this: “After yesterday’s staff meeting, I was thinking about growing our base, and that led me to think holistically about our PR efforts. I think one opportunity we’ve been missing is…” Bonus: Starting from the beginning is also a great way to keep from getting flustered and makes it more likely that you’ll cover all of the points you want to hit. New projects and ideas can lead to all kinds of good things—more responsibilities, increased visibility on your team, and of course those awesome new lines on your resume. Just use the tips above to put your best foot forward when presenting it, and you’ll be sure to get it off the ground. The Strange History Of The Wingdings Font

04:02
But Wingdings is much more than just a quirky font. It was —and remains — a phenomenon. In the early '90s, it was one of the first times people realized fonts could break through to the mainstream. One of the creators of Wingdings, Charles Bigelow, of the legendary design studio Bigelow & Holmes, told me Wingdings marked one of the first times a font became part of the popular culture. And when you delve into how Wingdings was born, it becomes clear why it become so iconic. Who made Wingdings — and why Wingdings came from somewhere Vox Wingdings came from somewhere. As a means of writing sentences, Wingdings fails — but that was never its purpose. It was created to be used as a unique tool for the pre-internet era. It was akin to emojis, but with even more utility. Today it's easy to cut and paste images from the internet, but it used to be a lot harder. There were few ways to get images, files were way too large for puny hard drives, and they were of poor quality. Even worse, it was tough to get pictures to play nicely with text. Fonts like Wingdings provided a workaround by giving people high-quality, scalable images that didn't clog up their hard drives. Two people made Wingdings happen: Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes (proprietors of the firm and husband-and-wife team). As designers of the font Lucida, they crafted pioneering type uniquely suited to the digital era (you can read Bigelow & Holmes's thesis on Lucida's unique traits). They were protégés of legendary designer Hermann Zapf, whose own Zapf Dingbats font, another collection of odd symbols, broke ground when it was distributed with Apple Printers in the mid-1980s. In January 2014, a Brooklyn artist named Paul Ingrisano trademarked the 3,000-year old mathematical symbol "π" followed by a period, and is actively protecting his mark, Wired's Kevin Poulsen reports. Ingrisano, who uses the design on shirts he sells through his company, PI Productions Corp., reportedly discovered that the custom t-shirt printing site Zazzle was selling merchandise featuring the pi symbol, and had an attorney send a cease-and-desist letter to the site (see below). Zazzle initially complied with the request by banning thousands of "pi"-related garments from its shop, but reversed course after receiving complaints, according to Wired. Sellers in Zazzle's online forum were understandably infuriated by the temporary removal of their merchandise. One user wrote, "Again, please explain how one person's trademark which incorporates a generic, untrademarked mathematical symbol can be justification to remove all designs using this generic symbol?" "I am enraged! Here many of us are trying to spread the mathematical truth ... and some lunatic thinks he owns part of the Greek language and its usage as part of the language of the universe!" another wrote. According to Wired, Ingrisano and his lawyer are planning their next move. Soy Sauce Breakthrough Could Help Treat AIDS

Those omnipresent bottles are the product of the Yamasa Corporation, which started manufacturing the soy sauce in 1645. But the most fascinating part of the Japan company's history is a thoroughly recent one: Virologists have confirmed that Yamasa's scientists did indeed make a discovery involving a molecule related to flavor enhancers contained in soy sauce—and HIV. Vocativ reports that Yamasa in 1988 established a division of food scientists who were tasked with carrying out research on how the immune system responds to a variety of chemicals in food; in 2001, they announced a big find: that the molecule, EFdA, could possibly be used in treatment of HIV. That's because EFdA, along with eight HIV drugs on the market, belongs to a family of compounds that help prevent HIV replication, explains the University of Missouri, whose virologists researched Yamasa's findings and this week confirmed them. But the issue with some of those drugs—the researchers single out the commonly used Tenofovir—is that patients develop resistance to them and then need to step up to a more powerful drug. But as Missouri researcher Stefan Sarafianos found, EFdA "is less likely to cause resistance" because it's activated more readily and doesn't break down in the liver and kidneys as rapidly as similar drugs. His lab has discovered it "works 10 times better than on wild-type HIV that hasn't become Tenofovir resistant" and it works even better—70 times better—on HIV that has grown resistant to Tenofovir. Sarafianos has teamed up with Merck to test potential new drugs. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Subscribe To The Fowler Show: http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation 2. North Carolina Passes Worst Voter Suppression Laws For 2014 Election

01:28
Almost a year ago today, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) signed into law a comprehensive voter suppression bill incorporating numerous different tactics used to restrict voting in other states. Among other things, the law imposed a strict voter ID requirement, a common provision used to reduce turnout among minority, low-income and student voters. It cut a full week of early voting. And it will prohibit certain kinds of voter registration drives. On Friday, Judge Thomas D. Schroeder, a George W. Bush appointee, held that this law could go into effect — at least for the 2014 elections. The plaintiffs in this case, which included the United States, various civil rights organizations and the League of Women Voters, had asked Schroeder for a “preliminary injunction,” a temporary order suspending various parts of the voter suppression law until his court holds a full trial in 2015. In Friday’s order, Schroeder denied this request. Much of Schroeder’s order is defensible. As Schroeder notes early in his opinion, the fact that North Carolina’s law is bad policy does not necessarily make it illegal or unconstitutional. And some of the arguments raised against the North Carolina law are legitimately quite weak. Judge Schroeder is rather charitable, for example, when he describes a claim that a provision eliminating same-day voter registration violates the Twenty-Sixth Amendment’s requirement that citizens over the age of 18 be allowed to vote as a “novel claim.” Similarly, the impact of Schroeder’s decision to allow the law to go into effect is mitigated by the fact that the law’s voter ID provision does not itself take effect until 2016. The law calls for a “soft rollout,” where, in the upcoming election, voters will be “notified that photo identification will be needed to vote beginning in 2016″ and required to sign an acknowledgement that this requirement is coming if they indicate that they do not have ID. Given the fact that the voter ID requirement will not actually prevent anyone from voting until 2016, however, Schroeder’s conclusion that it will not irreparably harm the plaintiffs during the 2014 election is a fair conclusion. How To Boost Your Credibility At Work

02:47
Being successful at work is a balance between competence and credibility. If you want to get ahead, you need to be able to demonstrate that you can do your job and have the skills to move to the next level. These tips will help you boost your credibility. 1. Always tell the truth Credibility is built on trust. And trust is established through reliability and honesty. If you lie at work, eventually someone will discover your deception, denting your credibility. Even if the lie itself is relatively minor, people will always doubt your honesty. They quite legitimately wonder that else you might be lying about. It is not possible to lie and remain credible. So instead you need to set yourself a personal standard of always telling the truth. It may not make you popular, but it will certainly improve your credibility. 2. Use Spell Check Working in an office, you probably type hundreds, if not thousands of words each day. Emails, letters, internal documents, client proposals -- the list goes on and on. Every time you write a word, you're setting out your stall of self-promotion whether you realize it or not. People judge you by what they see. And if that's a collection of poorly-spelled documents, you could be damaging your credibility. Because if your writing is littered with spelling errors it suggests that you lack attention to detail. Or that you are too lazy (or incompetent) to click the spell check button. In the age of the spell-checker there is absolutely no excuse for spelling mistakes. Allow yourself a few seconds to spell check every written communication you send out and watch your credibility climb. 3. Dress well It's a sad fact of life, but people really do judge books by their covers. Similarly your co-workers will often judge you by how you dress. This fact does however allow you to work that knowledge to your advantage. By dressing well, you can help improve your image. This then translates to a rise in credibility, even though you haven't really done anything at all. 4. Don't gossip Gossip plays a key part in office politics and has the potential to build or destroy careers. But no one likes their colleagues talking behind their backs. By participating in gossip, you help to create divisions within your team that limit productivity and success. If you want to appear credible, you need to be successful. Gossiping is also a great way to destroy trust. If people know you talk about others behind their backs, they will naturally assume you do the same about them. And if they make that connection, they won't trust you. Which is just as bad for your credibility as lying. 5. Keep your word If you promise to meet a deadline, make a delivery or complete a job, make sure you do it. Your promises (and how well you keep them) are crucial to establishing credibility at work. And it's not just work-related promises you need to keep either. If you make a personal promise to one of your colleagues, like attending a party or providing them with off-the-clock help, you need to keep it. If you build a reputation as someone who promises the world but never delivers, people will learn not to trust what you say. Which is as damaging to your credibility as lying. So you must always do what you say, when you say. Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Most Popular Drug in U.S. is an Antipsychotic

04:03
Does anyone remember Thorazine? It was an antipsychotic given to mentally ill people, often in institutions, that was so sedating, it gave rise to the term "Thorazine shuffle." Ads for Thorazine in medical journals, before drugs were advertised directly to patients, showed Aunt Hattie in a hospital gown, zoned out but causing no trouble to herself or anyone else. No wonder Thorazine and related drugs Haldol, Mellaril and Stelazine were called chemical straitjackets. But Thorazine and similar drugs became close to obsolete in 1993 when a second generation of antipsychotics which included Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Geodon and Abilify came online. Dogs Poop In Alignment With Earth's Magnetic Field

02:33
Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Dogs seem to have an awful lot of ritual before hunkering down and soiling the sidewalk. It's not uncommon to see a dog owner—plastic bag in hand—rolling his eyes as his furry companion sniffs and spins, getting just so before hunkering down to do the least considerate thing possible. But for whatever its worth, all that spinning is far from arbitrary. What dog owners witness is a small and furry version of the aurora borealis and a link between species and environment that's as holistic and beautiful as a dog pooping can be. A team of Czech and German researchers found that dogs actually align themselves with the Earth's magnetic field when they poop. Proving at least that they're really devoted to their work, the researchers measured the direction of the body axis of 70 dogs from 37 breeds during 1,893 defecations and 5,582 urinations over the course of two years, and found that dogs "prefer to excrete with the body being aligned along the North-south axis under calm magnetic field conditions." They fittingly published their results in the journal Frontiers in Zoology. You might wonder why dogs bother to do this, and uh, so do the researchers. It is still enigmatic why the dogs do align at all, whether they do it 'consciously' (i.e., whether the magnetic field is sensorial perceived (the dogs 'see,' 'hear' or 'smell' the compass direction or perceive it as a haptic stimulus) or whether its reception is controlled on the vegetative level (they 'feel better/more comfortable or worse/less comfortable' in a certain direction). Our analysis of the raw data (not shown here) indicates that dogs not only prefer N-S direction, but at the same time they also avoid E-W direction. This isn't the only example of animals seemingly sensing the Earth's magnetic field. Birds, turtles, and fish are known to use magnetic guidance while migrating. Cattle and deer are known to graze on a north-south axis—as with defecating dogs, this is magnetic north, not the geographic one. Some bats navigate using a magnetic compass and given the large ranges of the dog's closest relatives in the wild, wolves, scientists suspected that canines might also sense the magnetic field. But this was perhaps the first time that magnetic sensitivity was proven in dogs, and it was also the first time that a predictable behavioral reaction to the fluctuations in the magnetic field—magnetic storms, often as resulting from solar flares—was proven in a mammal. If you're out walking your dog later, and he sidles up and pees on a tree facing east-west, don't be terribly surprised. The magnetic consciousness was observed only in dogs off leash, in the middle of a field. All things considered, the owner matters more to the dog than the Earth's magnetic field; a nice little ego-booster that you'll need as you bend over to pick up warm dog droppings. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Stephen Hawking - The God Particle Could Destroy Us All

01:54
Stephen Hawking seems to have turned into the man with the sandwich board that says: "The end is nigh." Not only has he warned us that aliens might destroy us, but he's also been worrying that artificial intelligence might do the same. Now he's perceiving a threat that might not merely put an end to Earth, but to the whole Universe. As the UK's Sunday Times reports, Hawking is worried about the God particle. This, discovered by physicists during experiments within CERN's Large Hadron Collider, is a vital ingredient to explaining why things in our world have mass. However, in a preface to a new book called "Starmus" -- a collection of lectures given by famous scientists and astronomers -- Hawking worried that the Higgs Boson might become unstable. He wrote: "The Higgs potential has the worrisome feature that it might become metastable at energies above 100bn gigaelectronvolts (GeV)." What might this lead to? Hawkins explained: "This could mean that the universe could undergo catastrophic vacuum decay, with a bubble of the true vacuum expanding at the speed of light. This could happen at any time and we wouldn't see it coming." Before you prepare your loved ones for an evacuation to some distant star, Hawking did offer some hope with, it seems, a wry smile: "A particle accelerator that reaches 100bn GeV would be larger than Earth, and is unlikely to be funded in the present economic climate." MORE TECHNICALLY INCORRECT Only 5 percent of Android users will switch to iPhone 6, says survey Is Apple planning a catwalk show for its iPhone/iWatch event? Police: Driver browsing Facebook at 85 mph kills 89-year-old In essence, then, his fears might be theoretically valid, but their likelihood of actually coming to pass is somewhat smaller than that of the New York Jets winning the next Super Bowl. Still, you have to wonder about Hawking's relationship with the Higgs Boson discovery. First, there's the fact that he lost a $100 bet over its unearthing. Then he mused last year that now the Higgs Boson had been identified, physics has become less interesting. However, given that he believes we only have perhaps 1,000 years left on Earth anyway, it's as well to explore every possible scenario, before the robots and algorithms secure minds of their own and, as their first step, eliminate us all. Strict Dress Code Causes Riot At Texas High School

Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow There's a riot down in Texas and it's not about women's health or racist ranchers; kids are trashing their school to free themselves from oppressive dress codes! See, life can still surprise us. Like the non-pants debate of Evanston, Illinois where girls are being penalized for wearing leggings — because how will their male classmates control themselves? — students at Texas' Duncanville High aren't into their school's strict dress code either. In fact, according to Time, over 160 students were suspended just last week for not following the clothing rules. 4 School Dress Code's 'Distracting' Leggings Battle Rages on The fight to ban leggings rages on in middle America, but this time protestors sported a snappy new ... Read more The kids who were sent home were told they could not stay in class for a range of violations: not wearing belts, forgetting their name tags, wearing the wrong colored shirt or having stubble on their faces. One student was even told that an official school spirit shirt was out of dress code because it didn't have a collar. But shit got real when the kids kicked off an impromptu protest, flipping over trash cans, fighting and running down the halls like Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club, yelling "fuck dress code." Police were called in to calm the teen mafia but the students were far from finished. The day after trying the Puffy approach for change, the students enacted a Martin Luther King Jr. style sit-in and someone began a Change.org petition to push back against the dress code. The Duncanville Dress Code Riots, as they will now be known, follow the Evanston Middle School Leggings Truthers and point to the ridiculousness of all of these rules. If educators are spending so much time worrying about collars and spandex, who's teaching the class? 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. New Pepper So Hot It Could Kill You

03:47
The new dragon's breath chili is killer hot, but is intended to help, not hurt, when used in medical treatments. The culinary and extreme-spicy-food-eating worlds have been the recipients of a parade of increasingly really-super-hot peppers over the years, some so singe-worthy that a jalapeno utterly pales in comparison. The current record belongs to the Carolina Reaper, which rates at an average of 1.6 million Scoville heat units – by comparison, our wan jalapeno rings in at 2,500 - 5,000 in the heat scale. Now a plant grower from Denbighshire Wales, Mike Smith, in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, has grown a pepper so hot, so searingly painfully hot, that it could lead to a type of anaphylactic shock for unwary eaters, burning the airways and closing them up, reports the Daily Post. It measures more than 2.48 million on the Scoville scale; US military pepper sprays register at around 2 million. Buy The World's Most Expensive Estate

02:15
The W.T. Waggoner Ranch is larger than Manhattan and for a cool $725 million, it could be yours. The ranch sits on 510,000 acres of contiguous land and it's the "largest estate in the world," Sotheby's Bernard Uechtritz told The Huffington Post. Uechtritz also said it's currently the world's most expensive estate. The ranch spans six counties in northern Texas. That's 800 square miles, where you'll find 7,500 cows, 500 quarter horses, 20 cowboy camps and several huge lakes, according to the news agency SWNS. The ranch was bought in 1849 by Dan Waggoner and expanded by his son, W.T. Waggoner. In 1902, while digging for water, the family struck oil. There are now more than 1,000 wells pumping thousands of barrels of oil a year, SWNS reports. "This is a once-in-a-century opportunity," Uechtritz said. "It's never changed hands before." The sale comes after a long family feud between the Waggoner heirs, the Associated Press reported last year, when the property was first listed. Finally, the family agreed to liquidate. Uechtritz began showing prospective buyers around earlier this year. "There is an overwhelming amount of interest," he said. "We’re very focused right now." Local residents worry that the a profit-minded buyer will divide up the land and fire ranch employees, turning a blind eye to the estate's historic roots, according to the AP. Back in 2011, the now 62-year-old grandmother went to Truman Medical Center (TMC) after experiencing chest pains. While there, Ms. Harrington took a urine test. As KCTV5 News reports, when a nurse came in and told her about the results, she was shocked. View gallery . Pam Harrington (KCTV) Ms. Harrington told KCTV, "[The nurse] came in and told me that I had been doing methamphetamine, and it was in my system. And, I told her, 'No way. I've never done that.' Well, she was adamant that it was there." The feeling of being told this was hard for Ms. Harrington to take. She told the station, "It was devastating. I just don't do that stuff." And, it would turn out she hadn't. After a second urine test, the results came back negative and Ms. Harrington was told the first results were just a false positive. View gallery . Truman Medical Center (KCTV) Afraid of having any mention of testing positive for meth on her records, she wants the wrong results removed. Ms. Harrington explained to KCTV, "I told them I wanted this off my records because of my diabetes medicines. Anything that might happen with my aging. How To Apologize For Being Late

03:15
The key to a good “sorry I’m late” apology isn’t how you say it, it’s what you actually apologize for. Being late is a part of life, and it’s always polite to apologize when it happens. But what makes a good apology? During the Peak Work Performance Summit, psychologist Ron Friedman asked Peter Bregman, the author of Four Seconds: All the Time You Need to Stop Counter-Productive Habits and Get the Results You Want. Bregman explained that most people apologize for the wrong things when they’re late for something: Most people will apologize and offer an excuse. “I’m sorry I’m late, this meeting ran over.” “...I’m sorry I’m late, I didn’t intend to be late.” But the person who’s been waiting for you for twenty minutes isn’t experiencing your intention. They’re experiencing the impact of the result. Instead of offering up a reason or excuse for why you were late, Bregman suggests you focus your apology on the impact you’ve made or the problems you’ve caused. Say something like “Sorry for keeping you waiting” or “I’m so sorry for taking up more of your time” or even “Thank you for your flexibility.” If you show everyone that you’re sorry for using up their valuable time, your apology will sound much more sincere. Extreme Cold Kills More Than Leukemia, Homicide, & Liver Disease

02:47
Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation The bitter chill isn't just an inconvenience. It could kill you. A 2007 study by Olivier Deschenes and Enrico Moretti found that "the number of annual deaths attributable to cold temperature is 27,940 or 1.3% of total deaths in the US." This garden gnome is probably dead. (Jeff Roberson / AP) This garden gnome is probably dead. (Jeff Roberson / AP) Extreme cold turns out to be deadlier than extreme heat. Hot weather kills, but digging deep into the data, Deschenes and Moretti find that it mostly kills people who were already close to death. After the heat wave ends, the death rate drops so sharply that it totally offsets the weather-related spike. "The only effect of the weather shock is to change the timing of mortality, but not the number of deaths," they write. Periods of extreme cold are also associated with an immediate spike in deaths. But unlike extreme heat, there's no offsetting decline in expected mortality in the weeks following cold snaps. The result is that "the cumulative effect of 1 day of extreme cold temperature during a 30-day window is an increase in daily mortality by as much as 10%." In total, the authors calculate, the cold is responsible for more annual deaths than "leukemia, homicide, and chronic liver disease." This is particularly true in low-income communities. "The effect for counties in the bottom income decile is 66% larger than the effect for counties the top income decile." 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Texas Muslims Turn Mosques Into Shelters For Harvey Victims

06:16
As devastating flooding from Harvey continues around the Houston area on Tuesday, the city’s Muslim community is stepping up: turning mosques into 24-hour shelters and bringing in diapers, water and food from their own homes. M.J. Khan, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston — an organization that represents 21 Islamic centers in the area — said in a phone call on Tuesday that four of ISGH’s member mosques are now open as round-the-clock shelters. “This is an obligation, a religious obligation to help others,” Khan said. “When you give, you don’t give only to your own family. … You give to anybody who needs help.” Khan explained that with Harvey bearing down on Friday, the ISGH had the idea to offer mosques as shelters to anyone who needed refuge. The problem, he explained, was that many of the roads weren’t passable. Man Blinded By Cops Faces 30 Years In Prison

Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Kwadir Felton, 22, was shot in the face by Jersey City Police Sgt. Thomas McVicar on January 10, 2010, and went blind as a result. Yet it is Felton who faces up to 30 years in prison for aggravated assault of a police officer. McVicar says he was forced to open fire because Felton, intending to rob him, pointed a gun at him, which was allegedly found lying next to Felton after he'd been shot. But Felton, who was 18 at the time, adamantly denies that he was armed. He testified that he had just left a baby shower and was on his way to his girlfriend's house when he heard someone call his name and say, "Yo, you little black mother fucker, you better get the fuck down before I blow your fucking brains out." "There's no reason to have a weapon on me," Felton told the courtroom. "That's not me. I was raised better than that." Nevertheless, as happens in most cases with black defendants, the jury sided with the cop last month and found Felton guilty on all counts, including aggravated assault of an officer and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Upon hearing the verdict, Felton's mother, Dawn Felton, who had recently undergone open heart surgery, "collapsed on the ground in uncontrollable sobs and kicked the bench near where she had collapsed," according to The Jersey Journal. Unable to calm her down (whatever that means), police officers "dragged her out of the courtroom." Meanwhile, Felton broke down sobbing and shouted at an officer, "I don't understand! You didn't have to shoot me in the head for no reason! You trying to charge me with something I didn't do!" Brooke Barnett, Felton's attorney, has since filed a motion for a new trial, citing "prosecutorial misconduct" and calling the state's evidence against Felton "absolutely and unequivocally contradicted, clearly causing a miscarriage of justice." Given the trauma and torment Felton has been forced to endure over the last four years, the injustice goes beyond the verdict. Felton testified at his trial that he lost the will to live due to his injuries and tried on multiple occasions to take his own life. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Whatever You Do, Don't Lose Your Job When You're Old

If you read any of our "Unemployment Stories" series a few years ago, you heard dozens of tales of older Americans who lost their jobs and were unable to get back on their feet. New survey data shows just how bad unemployment in later life can be. Unemployment is bad. Long-term unemployment is a plague all its own, a slow dive down what can seem like an inescapable hole. As workers reach middle age and beyond, the consequences of being laid off grow graver—because the ease of being rehired shrinks. A survey by the AARP explores just how dicey the unemployment situation is for the AARP demographic. Long-term unemployment is rampant: "On average, 45 percent of older jobseekers (ages 55 and older) were long-term unemployed (out of work for 27 weeks or more) in 2014." Breaking Bad Superfan Arrested ... Guess Why?

Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation A Florida man who made headlines after winning a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch the Breaking Bad series finale with the show's stars at a private party in a Hollywood cemetery is back in the news this week after being busted on multiple drug charges. In a surprise twist worthy of the critically acclaimed show itself, Ryan Lee Carroll of San Carlos Park was arrested last week and charged with felony possession of a synthetic narcotic and felony possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was also booked on a charge of misdemeanor keeping a shop or vehicle for dangerous drugs. The exact drugs involved have yet to be named by authorities. Two other men were arrested on similar charges around the same time, at least one of whom appears to be an associate of Carroll's according to a photo the 28-year-old provided the Naples News in September, after winning the Breaking Bad contest. Sponsored by Aaron Paul, the contest was set up to promote an anti-bullying nonprofit founded by the actor's wife. Individuals who donated to The Kind Campaign were automatically entered into a raffle, with the grand prize being a trip to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery to party with Paul, Bryan Cranston, and the rest of the Breaking Bad cast. "I think we're going to be in Hazmat suits with them," Carroll told Naples News shortly after winning the raffle. "It's going to be crazy." Carroll had only been a fan of the show for a year before being picked to be Paul's plus one. "If you start watching it, you can't stop," he was quoted as saying. "It's highly addicting, just like the meth they make (on the show)." 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Subscribe To The Fowler Show: http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation 2. Animal Rights Activists Outraged Over Squirrel Burger Contest

02:15
Squirrels make a “good food source” and should be served up as a way of controlling the population, the organiser of a controversial squirrel burger cooking contest said on Tuesday. Rachel Thomas staged the challenge at the Forest Showcase Food and Drink Festival in southwest England at the weekend, which proved a hit with punters but angered animal rights activists. Competitors had a quarter of a pound (115 grammes) of minced-up grey squirrel to work with — plus their imagination. A “Cajun Melt” effort came first ahead of “Chicken of the Tree Surprise”. “There was plenty to go round. Lots of people came and tried and they were very tasty and very positively received,” exhibit coordinator Rachel Thomas told AFP. She described the taste as a combination of chicken and rabbit. “If you eat meat, why not squirrel? Lambs, rabbits, they’re all cute animals so we don’t see what the fuss is all about,” Thomas said. “They are, we think, a good food source. We decided, let’s get a bit of education out there, it’s about time they were managed properly.” Instead of simply trapping and gassing them, “we should be actually using them for a food source instead”. Introduced from North America from 1876 to 1929, grey squirrels are now thought to outnumber England’s native reds by 66 to one. Squirrel meat is available in some shops and a few restaurants do serve up squirrel-based dishes but the consumption is minimal and remains very niche. A spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said: “Our shops are brimming with healthy and delicious grains, pasta, beans, rice, nuts, fruits, almond milks and soya puddings. “More and more Brits are realising that these are not only far kinder choices but also far more nourishing than the dead bodies of squirrels, ponies or any other animal for that matter.” Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. A Reality TV Producer's Secrets Will Shock You

03:25
For the last ten years, I've made a living in reality TV. Now I'm making a fictional movie about reality TV. As it turns out, they're not that different—many of the methods I used to get the subjects of my show to open up are equally effective on actors. The film is called Inner Demons, and it explores the terrifying results of a reality production gone wrong. The film gave me the opportunity to explore some of the tensions I felt working in reality TV; specifically, I knew that even when the shows had real social value – and despite the reputation of reality TV, many of them do – in order to reach people, the show had to get ratings – i.e. had to be as entertaining as possible. My job, as a field producer, was to befriend the cast, gain their trust, draw them out in interviews, and ultimately turn them into compelling television. (In reality TV, field producers are the equivalent on directors in movies and scripted TV, running the crew while directing the cast.) Producing reality TV can be psychologically challenging, with long hours, grueling schedules, and, on serious shows, exposure to a range of traumas that we had to do our best to document objectively. As dramatized in Inner Demons, different members of the crew react to the stresses of the job in different ways – some distance themselves by vilifying the subjects, others with gallows humor, and others sympathize with them so much that they threaten the objectivity of the production. Directing Inner Demons, I had the opportunity to pull back the curtain and explore some of the tricks that reality producers use to draw emotion out of their subjects. I found that a lot of the same methods work with actors who are stuck on a difficult scene. Here, then, are ten tricks that we reality producers use to generate onscreen emotion: Remind them of their privilege as stars of reality TV One way to get interview subjects to invest emotionally in their own stories is to remind them that in our society, the opportunity to appear on television is the greatest privilege bestowed upon its citizens. Once they understand what an honor it is to be able to communicate their personal experiences on TV, they're often willing to share more deeply than when they feel that the interview is a chore or a test. This is especially helpful after four straight hours of interviews, when the subject is exhausted and just wants to get home to shoot up. Challenge them With milquetoast interview subjects, you need to raise the blood pressure, and sometimes this means challenging their strongly held beliefs. For example, on a show I recently produced about a family from rural Georgia that relocates to Los Angeles, the cast takes it for granted that grits are delicious. When I challenge them, declaring that grits are disgusting and that Hollywood's famous "skinny omelet" is a much more satisfying breakfast, their blood boils and they give me the kind of angry, reckless soundbites that got them on TV in the first place. Cry When I first moved to Los Angeles in 2006, I took an acting class and quickly learned an idiosyncratic but foolproof way to induce tears. Sometimes, during interviews, I discovered that by letting my eyes get a little watery, I gave my subjects implicit permission to do so as well. I found that I could do the same on Inner Demons, when I was helping actors prepare for emotionally taxing scenes, and often this mirror-neuron bond was all that was necessary to release the waterworks. You Can Pay This Dude To Stand In Line For You

02:04
Need a job? How about getting paid to wait in line? Meet Robert Samuel, a professional line-sitter who takes PayPal, Chase QuickPay and Venmo. According to the New York Times, Samuel sits in long lines for aggressively popular events and items, like a Beyoncé concert, Apple iPhones or Louboutin heels. He is the guy you see on line on the 7 o'clock news and think 'Who has time to stand in that line for hours for a phone?' Robert Samuel does, and now you probably want to hire him, don't you? His job began as a side-job after he was fired from a cell phone salesman job in New York City. Then, just before the newest iPhone hit stores in 2012, Samuel put his services as a line-sitter on Craigslist and earned his first client. Now he charges $25 for the first hour of waiting and $10 every half-hour after that and even has a posse of line-sitters he manages when jobs get crazy. Samuel stands in line for everything from videos games to cronuts but declines unreasonable requests now, like SNL tickets. "I really don't want to do that," he said. "People are on line for days at a time. We go from 11 at night till 6 in the morning, and you don't get in. With a big show like Justin Bieber, I would probably just tell you no. Tina Fey? Not happening." Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/SubscribeFowlerNation Become a Patron! http://Patreon.com/FowlerShow 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Woman Buys Fertilizer, DEA Raids Home - Political Maniacs

Their reasoning for the intrusion? Kirking purchased organic fertilizer from a gardening store. Kirking claims she bought fertilizer for her hibiscus plant Kirking purchased the 16 oz bottle of fertilizer from a store called Midwest Hydroganics, near her Will County, Illinois home. According to the DEA's complaint for a search warrant, law enforcement had been staking out the gardening store. Prior surveillance of the store had "led to the arrests of subjects for production of cannabis sativa plants and possession of cannabis." Charles Pelkie, director of public affairs for the state's attorney's office told Huffington Post there are a total of 11 cases in Will County "based upon this type of surveillance." According to a report by the local news site Patch, DEA agents followed Kirking home from the store and, hell-bent on catching her for possession of a small amount of marijuana and possibly a plant, spent a month going through her garbage and assessing her electric bills to see if they were higher than those of her neighbors. When Kirking's bills turned out to be higher than those of two neighbors, the feds and local cops decided it must mean she was growing marijuana, because often people who grow have higher electric bills. They used the bill as evidence for a search warrant. Kirking's attorney is fighting to get the case thrown out since the search warrant they used to enter Kirking's home never should have been granted in the first place. During the raid authorities seized 9.3 grams of marijuana, a few glass pipes, books on marijuana cultivation and a "plant portion." They also took her computer and a zip drive. Ultimately, law enforcement and prosecutors could only charge Kirking with a couple of misdemeanors. The judge on the case implied during an April 4 hearing that high electric bills did not seem like grounds for a search warrant. He will decide later in the month whether to throw out the warrant and effectively kill the case against Kirking. 3 Steps To Join #FowlerNation! 1. Man Arrested For Overdue Library Book

Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/14crV4D If you check a book out in Copperas Cove, Texas, you best make darn sure you return it. Failure to do so could result in a trip to the big house. Jory Enck learned that the hard way when he was recently arrested over a book, a GED study guide, that he checked out and failed to return three years ago, KEYE reports. The city ordinance was passed because some patrons weren't responding to requests to return their library materials. "The reason they passed it was that they were spending a tremendous amount of money replacing these materials that people just didn't return," Bill Price, the city's municipal judge, told KEYE. Enck was released on a $200 bond. KEYE visited the Copperas Cove Public Library and found that the book in question had since been returned. Inside, they found Enck's library card. Yahoo News spoke with Sgt. Julie Lehmann of the Copperas Cove Police Department about the arrest. She said it isn't unusual. "I don't have statistics on it, but it is quite frequently," she said. Lehmann said her police department doesn't aggressively pursue people who have overdue books. She explained that what happens is the police usually make "contact with the individuals on a traffic stop, or we go to their residence or wherever." Lehmann said something similar happened in the case of Enck. Man Dies In Jail Cell After Misdemeanor Pot Offense

03:02
Join #FOWLERNATION!! http://bit.ly/14crV4D Today's story is part drug war, part police indifference and callousness, part police cover-up. It comes by way of a lawsuit filed by the family of Michael Saffioti. Saffioti failed to make a court date on a misdemeanor charge for pot possession. In July of last year, he surrendered himself to Snohomish County, Washington authorities, who promptly jailed him. (The streets of Snohomish County were a little safer that day.) When it came time for breakfast the following morning, Saffioti is seen on video having a conversation with a guard while holding his tray. Presumably, he was inquiring about any dairy products in the meal. Saffioti had a severe allergy. He's then seen taking a few bites of some oatmeal.
