i-D Meets: Violet Chachki

04:34
i-D Meets...Violet Chachki. Whether they're fishy queens, comedy queens, pageant queens or genderfuck, the art of drag has long provoked interesting and necessary discussions around gay culture, gender binaries and passing privilege. But Ru Paul's Drag Race has taken the art form to prime time, as would-be queens Statewide finesse their drag style and compete in challenges to become America's Next Drag Superstar. One of the most standout queens in Drag Race History is Season 7 winner Violet Chachki who with her burlesque styling, flawless beauty and incredible talent as an aerial artist is elevating what drag can be and what drag will become; and at just 23 years old is already one of drag's most legendary children. Join us as i-D meets Violet Chachki and learns more about her beginnings in the scene, the transformation routine into vision that is Violet and goes backstage with her at Ru Paul's DragCon in Los Angeles to see her influence on her fans. Kelela - A Message (Official Video)

04:08
Kelela is the LA-based singer with waist length dreads (watch her cut them off here) who we first heard on poptronica duo Teengirl Fantasy’s EFX and hailed as the future of music when we met her at the beginning of last year. We’re going back to the future once again with A Message, the first video from her forthcoming EP, Hallucinogen. Produced by Arca, Hallucinogen takes us on a journey through lust, longing, delirium and ecstasy. Directed by Daniel Sannwald, A Message is the stage that comes before lust, the darker realisation of love; the “rejection and amputation.” Watch the cartoon lights twist around and engulf the sylph-like singer, transforming her into a virtual goddess at war with herself, spilling out a rolling vocal that will mesmerise lesser mortals… Kelela Facebook https://www.facebook.com/kelelamusic iTunes http://hyperurl.co/kelela_amessage Twitter http://www.twitter.com/kelelam Produced by: Arca Additional production: Boots Taken from the forthcoming HALLUCINOGEN EP out May 5th, 2015. The A-Z of Beauty knows no bounds, it's not about perfection, it's about celebrating individuality around the world. Showcasing 26 make-up looks by our amazing new Beauty Editor Isamaya Ffrench, i-D's latest fashion alphabet brings together our favourite girls of the moment: Ola Rudnicka flutters her black "kohl" eyes while Sigrid Agren drips with colourful "oils", Caroline Brasch Nielsen "smudges" paints across her face while Devon Windsor glows with a "tan" that shines as bright as the sun and the stars. Directed by Daniel Sannwald and styled by Sarah Richardson, the A-Z of Beauty starts off our very special Beauty Week; come back every day for essays, interviews and shoots that celebrate the world of cosmetics. Chloë Sevigny's Guide to Being a New Yorker

Wake up in the city that never sleeps with Chloë Sevigny, who The New Yorker once described as “the coolest girl in the world.” Ahead of the April release of her new book, Chloë gives us her Guide to Being a New Yorker. She'll lead you through the streets of the concrete jungle, teach you how to appreciate the city's natural beauty, despise Los Angeles, love the cold, keep to a tight schedule and slip into the night unnoticed like a true Big Apple native, in our latest film directed by Graydon Sheppard. Elliphant - Purple Light (feat. Doja Cat)

03:50
Since we first saw Ellinor Olovsdotter aka Elliphant rise from the icy waters with her fellow merbabes, showing off her moves in front of a striking Icelandic backdrop to the sounds of Down On Life, we’ve been obsessed. Even Katy Perry proclaimed the reggae-pop performer as badass, which of course she is. Having since had One More hit with BFF and i-D buddy MØ, the Stockholm-raised, LA babe is back with another stunner of a video, this time in collaboration with yours truly. After a night of impressive dancing, we see the Scandi singer emerge from the purple light of the club as the sun starts to slowly rise through the dusky haze. With her long locks and peace&love looks styled by Stella Greenspan, Elliphant really is all about good vibes, even calling on spiritual friend Doja Cat for a verse. Directed by Ellis Bahl and with Sing Howe Yam as Director Of Photography, it's time to reach up for the glass, come on na fill it up! Marion Cotillard - Enter The Game

04:50
French actress and face of Dior, Marion Cotillard reduced the world to tears with her musical debut as Edith Piaf in 2007's La Vie en Rose. Now teaming up with Joseph Mount and Villaine, she's making music once more, and it's just as beautiful. Mixing classic French chanson with something more experimental and modern, the Marion Cotillard and Eliott Bliss written and directed video called 'Enter the Game' for Marion Cotillard's song 'Snapshot in LA' sees Marion dancing and defying gravity in a sleek modernist villa in the Provencal countryside, relaxing by the pool and showing off Dior’s Cruise 15 collection. Exploring London's DIY Zine Revolution

02:06
You may have already guessed it, but we're mad about magazines. If you've got something to say, there's no better way to say it than shouting it out loud on the printed page. In our latest film, i-D meet the creative minds behind Polyester, LAW and Mushpit, three keep-it-on-your-bookshelf-thick-papered-zines for the 21st century, born out of love, sweat, tears, late nights and paper cuts. It's often said that the print industry is collapsing, but that's only made this new generation of editors and magazine aficionados more resilient and determined to grow something beautiful out of the hard ground. In our fast paced digital age, print is more precious than ever before, a pause in our ever busy world. Something to have and to hold from issue one, for better, for worse, for richer, for paper, until death do us part. A-Z of Aaliyah

05:27
Aaliyah transcends time. Her influence is everlasting – revered by her peers, and built upon by today’s fans and fresh faces. i-D, MAC Cosmetics and The Haughton Family present A-Z of Aaliyah, a modern homage to her music, dance, beauty and style. Director Cara Stricker reimagines the A-Z’s alphabet format as Aaliyah would – not bound by the confines of conventional language, but through a deconstructed narrative of Aaliyah’s persona, artistry and legacy. This nonlinear structure is illustrated through multiple formats including archival footage, otherworldly studio scenes, and airy exteriors in Aaliyah’s home of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. From Missy Elliott and Timbaland to Princess Nokia, Empress Of, Keke Palmer and Alton Mason, the film’s 26 vignettes weave together a cast of fans, collaborators, and creative talent building on Aaliyah’s influence today. Timbaland’s team scored the film with a modern interpretation of Aaliyah’s sound. Aaliyah collaborators Tre Major, Eric Ferrell and Derek Lee consulted on hair, makeup and styling, respectively. And finally, five of Aaliyah’s biggest fans were cast through Instagram, building on the inherently social movement that sparked MAC’s upcoming Aaliyah Collection. Size Matters | Barbie Ferreira (Episode 2 of 4)

02:21
In the second of our week of films on whether fashion needs a body image health check, we hear from Barbie Ferreira, the 18-year old queen of the in-between who definitely isn’t into your Beach Body Ready bullshit. Confronted with the sad reality that there were no curvy role models to look up to while growing up, Barbie decided to take matters in to her own hands by sending off some pictures to American Apparel. Fast forward to today and she is a role model for young girls the Insta-world over, calling for representations of people from all walks of life, gender, sexuality, (dis)ability, and race. Obsessed: The Chinese Friends

04:07
So no one told you life was gonna be this way. Your job’s a joke, you’re broke and about to become infinitely jealous of our new friend Gunther. Having gone through a bad break-up, his mates recommended he watch everyone’s favourite sitcom to soothe his broken heart and teach him how to love again. It worked. Falling fast and hard for Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Monica and Phoebe’s friendly faces, Gunther loved their lives and found solace in their world. He’s since found his lobster (his wife, Rachel) and had a son (Joey), but his obsession will never die. Quitting a job he wasn’t content with, Gunther opened his very own Central Perk in Beijing, an exact replica of the one in FRIENDS complete with specially made couches and a real life Smelly Cat. So PIVOT your way down China (preparing yourself for anything with unagi) and frolic in the fountain as you reflect on all 236 episodes of the series and get to know the greatest barista of all time. A-Z of Attitude

05:13
Attitude isn’t something you can buy. If you’ve got it, you own it. It’s an effortless sense of self defined by where you've been, who you know, and what you've experienced. It’s as much about the walk or the hairstyle as it is about the feeling. Whether it’s a drag queen turning a bodega into her throne or dancers turning a subway ride into Showtime, New Yorkers have attitude. That’s why i-D and göt2b came together to present the A-Z of Attitude, the newest film in i-D’s A-Z series showing off the many attitudes and hair looks found on the streets of New York. And while there may only be 26 letters in our encyclopedia of attitude, there is no limit to expressing a unique identity. In the words of Alexis (O for O.G.), “Why blend in when you can stand out as an individual?" Movement: W-BASE | Presented by New Balance

04:14
i-D travels the globe in search of athletic subcultures that are creating a movement in their city through sport. In the third episode of an all new 3-part series, MOVEMENT presented by New Balance, we follow W-Base, a bike crew made up of BMXers, fixed gear riders, and messengers. These riders have all defied the expectations of graduate degrees and corporate jobs. They’ve used biking as a way to carve their own unique paths outside of familial and societal expectations. Their story illustrates the importance of living by your own rules. From Shibuya crossing to the mountains of Okutama, watch them speed through the streets of Tokyo. Their journeys remind us that those who are fearlessly independent and defy expectations can make a larger impact on the people around them and the cities they dwell in.
