How to make DIY Ollas -- Low Tech Self-Watering Systems for Plants

05:14
Two simple ways to make your own Ollas. These traditional self-watering vessels are low-tech, easy to DIY, and will keep plants watered in the driest conditions. You bury the pots into the ground near plants that need regular watering and then top up the water in the vessel rather than the soil around the plant. The first way to make an Olla takes only a few minutes and the second more permanent DIY takes a day. If you enjoy this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe. Honey Harvest: Crushing & Straining Method

04:26
It’s been a very busy couple of weeks for me with filling orders over at Lovely Greens Handmade, taking guests on a quirky weekend tour of the Isle of Man, and working in the garden. Something had to give and this time it was my bees. A couple of days ago I visited them for the first time in a couple of weeks and found that one of my colonies had been very busy indeed – not only filling the empty super I’d not taken off the hive with fresh honeycomb, but also building comb into a space that I’d forgotten to leave a frame. Doh! Here's how I crushed the capped comb and strained it to extract the honey. Easy to DIY Compost Bin using wood pallets

08:03
The one thing that's missing and that I desperately need on my allotment is a compost pile. There's just so much waste material I have from clearing the new plot and I want to reuse it rather than get rid of it. Right now I have a plastic compost bin but it's really not cutting it. It takes such a long time for material to break down in mine and I think that's because it's not large enough to create a warm composting environment. I also don't have that many worms so they're not helping with breaking down the material either. I've decided to dedicate a space at the bottom of my new plot for good sized composting units. Using heat-treated wood pallets, I create the first bay in this video and then begin filling it with waste material, grass clippings, and spent coffee grounds from a local coffee shop. Coffee grounds have a neutral pH once they've been brewed and are a great 'green' material to add to compost. In this video: ✽ Building an easy compost bin using wood pallets ✽ Filling it with garden waste that will become compost ✽ Green and brown materials for compost ✽ Composting spent coffee grounds ✽ My new dungarees from Lucy & Yak! Preparing the Honeybees for Winter

05:37
Autumn is the most critical point of the beekeeping year. You need to make sure that the colonies have enough stores, that their hives are in good condition, and that they’re protected from predators and the elements. Here’s what I’ve done to prepare my honeybees for winter: ✽ Feed Bluebell with honey I’ve previously extracted ✽ Attach mouse-guards ✽ Ensure that the varroa floor is pinned and secure (we don’t have varroa on the Isle of Man but varroa floors are ideal for giving the bees extra ventilation in summer) ✽ Replaced the varroa floor inserts and created a rain runoff board ✽ Tidied the apiary and took the lure hive back home Read more about feeding honey to bees here: https://lovelygreens.com/2017/11/feeding-honey-to-bees.html ➤ If you enjoy this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!) ➤Remember to TURN ON notifications to know when new videos are out ➤ FIND LOVELY GREENS ONLINE LEARN MORE: http://lovelygreens.com/p/about.html INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lovely.greens/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LovelyGreens FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/lovely.greens.iom/ ➤ NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION https://www.subscribepage.com/q2d1b7 ➤ ENQUIRIES [email protected] MUSIC CREDIT Boxcar Rag by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://audionautix.com/
The PRISON Vegetable Garden

08:34
Years ago I heard rumors that the Isle of Man's prison had their own vegetable gardens. The fact that they swept up many of the awards at a local horticultural show was proof. After years of curiosity, I finally see first hand how fresh fruit and vegetables are grown within the grounds of Jurby Prison. I also find out that the initiative is so successful that they've stopped buying in fresh veg at the prison this summer. This is probably the most unique garden tour I've ever been on and there are a few things to take from it. First of all, there is a real opportunity for prisons, especially smaller facilities, to become self-sufficient in fresh vegetables. While the prisoners are getting fresh air and given responsibility, the prison saves money. On top of that, the Isle of Man prison is hiring on a permanent horticultural officer to oversee the gardens and the vocational certificate they hope to offer to inmates. Have a watch and let me know what you think and if you've ever heard of a similar program. In this video: ✽ Speaking to the Isle of Man prison's governor ✽ Garden tour of the prison's vegetable gardens ✽ Speaking to two prisoners about their experience in the prison gardens ✽ A look to see how homegrown veg is being used in the prison's kitchens and a chat with their head chef Further links & info: Isle of Man Prison: http://bit.ly/2Mk9R0E ➤ If you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!) ➤Remember to TURN ON notifications to know when new videos are out ➤ FIND LOVELY GREENS ONLINE LEARN MORE: https://lovelygreens.com/about INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lovely.greens/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LovelyGreens FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/lovely.greens.iom/ ➤ NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION https://www.subscribepage.com/q2d1b7 ➤ ENQUIRIES [email protected] #gardening #urbangardening #gardentour #prison #gardentherapy
How to carve Moots -- turnip Jack-o-lanterns

03:01
The 31st of October isn’t Halloween on the Isle of Man – it’s Hop tu Naa. It’s not a night for scaring away evil spirits but for celebrating the end of summer, the season’s harvests, and the beginning of the Celtic new year. There’s similarities between the traditions of both but with subtle differences – one being that turnips are carved into jack-o-lanterns, not pumpkins. Not only do they last longer, but ‘Moots’ can look very scary. Like shrunken heads! It’s a tough job to hollow Moot’ out by hand so this video should help anyone looking for a quicker and easier way. Instead of spending over an hour chipping away at the inside with a spoon, use my method which only took me six minutes. The materials you need for this project are below. Making Natural Willow Christmas Wreaths

04:29
Christmas wreaths created from natural materials like willow, holly, evergreens, and ivy are both inexpensive and fun to make! You can forage for what you can in your own garden or sustainably gather from the wild. This year I’ve partnered with my friend John “Dog” Callister to host a Natural Willow Christmas Wreath workshop. In the Garden: Building a Blackberry Trellis

05:49
For two years I've been growing thornless blackberries along the bottom of my allotment garden. They really need to be supported though so I've created an inexpensive support frame using timber, wire, and eyelet screws. The project took me about an hour and a half and the end result will create a firm foundation for my thornless blackberries to grow on. Each vertical support is 47" tall with 35" above ground. The first eyelet screw is placed 3" below the top of the post and the second is 25" down. Coated steel wire is strung between the posts and I'll be tying the blackberry canes onto it with string. ➤ If you enjoy this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!). ➤Remember to TURN ON notifications to know when new videos are out ➤ FIND LOVELY GREENS ONLINE LEARN MORE: http://lovelygreens.com/p/about.html INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lovely.greens/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LovelyGreens FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/lovely.greens.iom/ ➤ NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION https://www.subscribepage.com/q2d1b7 ➤ ENQUIRIES [email protected]
How to make Handmade Lemongrass Soap

09:03
Make Natural Soap with Lemongrass Essential Oil This simple recipe for handmade lemongrass soap requires only four main oils, natural pigment in the form of oxides, essential oil, and a few other ingredients and materials. It's also a palm-free soap recipe so you can rest assured that the ingredients are as ethical as possible. Making cold-process soap is quick but there is a cure time of four weeks before you can use the bars. During that curing time, the extra water from the recipe evaporates out, creating hard and long-lasting bars. The November Garden

It’s mid-November in the allotment garden and things have slowed down and turned brown. While the garden plants are taking a break it’s time to tidy them, spread composted manure on the beds, and plant garlic and onion sets. I also spotted a job that I need to get done the next time I visit. Overgrown Strawberry Patch

07:27
One garden job that I do every January is clearing out my overgrown strawberry patch. In summer the plants spread and send out runners in every direction. If you don't keep on top of them, the strawberry bed can turn into a tangled mess. I let my plants go a bit wild in summer but come winter, that overgrown strawberry patch gets tidied. It's a lot easier to do than you'd think! I'm also clearing two rows of strawberry plants this year in order to plant new bare root plants. Strawberry plants need to be replaced every three years to keep productivity up. How to Transplant Aloe Vera Babies

13:31
If you have an aloe vera plant, you'll eventually find it growing babies. Lots of babies! Aloe vera pups can be removed from the parent plant and then potted on to make new plants and this video will show you how I do it. I have several aloe vera plants that I use for handmade skincare and for first aide. With the annual Seed & Plant Share coming up I decided it was time to pot up my extra aloe vera pups so that I can give them away to others. Aloe vera is well known for its use in treating burns, sunburns, and insect bites. It's also a natural astringent that can be blended into handmade lotions and creams. This Gardening DIY project involves: ✽ Teasing and cutting the aloe vera babies (called Pups) from the parent plant ✽ Allowing the plants to dry at room temperature and out of direct sunlight for 1-2 days ✽ Planting into a potting mix with good drainage -- perlite or grit mixed into multipurpose compost or use cactus compost ✽ Though I do water my plants a little bit after potting on the official recommendation is to wait a few days before watering. ✽ The plants will begin to grow new roots and leaves and can get as big as the mother plant within a couple of years. ➤ If you enjoy this video on how to transplant aloe vera babies please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!). ➤Remember to TURN ON notifications to know when new videos are out ➤ FIND LOVELY GREENS ONLINE LEARN MORE: http://lovelygreens.com/p/about.html INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lovely.greens/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LovelyGreens FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/lovely.greens.iom/ ➤ NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION https://www.subscribepage.com/q2d1b7 ➤ ENQUIRIES [email protected] ➤ MUSIC CREDIT Walk In The Park by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) December in the Allotment Garden

07:09
December is cold, brown, and soggy and the allotment garden is much different than it was just a couple months ago. Despite the gloom, there’s still winter veg to be picked including turnips, beet root, and carrots. There are also hearty greens on the menu including crispy oriental greens and kale. While it’s a bright and calm day I also decide to replace the mouse-guards on the beehives with entrance blocks. It’s been very cold at night and the restricted entrance will help keep warmth inside the hives. Planting Early Potatoes the No-Dig Way

10:02
Good Friday is the traditional day for planting out seed potatoes. Though it's been a cold start to spring, I kept to this tradition and planted my own just a day later. This year I'm growing a small patch of Red Duke of York First Earlies and am planting them the no-dig method. You can order Red Duke of York seed potatoes online here in the UK https://amzn.to/2pWyy9d -- this is an affiliate link and I'll make a small commission if you end up making a purchase. This is the first time I'm attempting to grow them this way and it involves using mulch to both plant and earth them up. Disturbing the soil as little as possible is the no-dig way. I did have to dig the bed over though to find the dahlia tubers that were still there. With those transplanted, I planted my potatoes just a couple inches deep in the soil. I did this mainly because I'm a bit fearful of a late frost and don't want my spuds being affected. Over the top I spread about two inches of composted horse manure. As the leaves grow, I'll continue adding more mulch to 'earth them up'. In this video: ✽ An explanation of growing potatoes the no-dig way ✽ Planting First Early Potatoes ✽ Mulching with composted horse manure ➤ If you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!). ➤Remember to TURN ON notifications to know when new videos are out ➤ FIND LOVELY GREENS ONLINE LEARN MORE: https://lovelygreens.com/about INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lovely.greens/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LovelyGreens FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/lovely.greens.iom/ ➤ NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION https://www.subscribepage.com/q2d1b7 ➤ ENQUIRIES [email protected] ➤ MUSIC CREDIT Walk In The Park by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) September Veggie Garden Tour

15:08
It's been weeks of my showing you the new house and garden here on YouTube. Today it's back to the allotment to see what the damage is! After over a month of very little work in it, I'm giving you a garden tour showing both its weeds and its bounty. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that it's not a whole lot worse. I attribute that to adopting the no-dig method with my garden beds this year. Not digging means less weed seeds are uncovered and the mulch helps keep others from growing. In this video: ✽ September veggie garden tour ✽ Plans for the allotment garden next year ✽ Picking fresh produce from the garden ✽ Why have my carrots split? November in the Allotment Vegetable Garden: planting onions, garlic, and shallots

11:42
It's blue skies at the allotment vegetable garden and the perfect kind of day for planting onion sets, garlic, and shallots. This year I ordered six types of autumn planting varieties and they're destined to grow in a bed on my new plot. The varieties I have need to be planted in late autumn to early winter and incredibly, they start to grow right away. At least a little before they decide to hunker down for the winter. Come spring they'll start growing again and have a head start on any planted in the new year. In this video I clear the new bed, which has been covered in landscaping fabric and wood chips, prepare the surface, and begin planting. Butternut Squash Pie Recipe: the best 'Pumpkin Pie' you'll ever taste

02:49
I’m about to shatter your childhood illusions. You know those creamy pumpkin pies you chow down into each Thanksgiving? Well, it turns out there’s no real “pumpkin” in them in at all.https://www.youtube.com/edit?video_id=LDP_vWCobCY&show_mt=1&ar=1 Recently, I was researching the best pumpkin varieties for eating when I decided to look into Libby’s pumpkin purée. It has great flavor and is what most people use to make pumpkin pie. What variety is it that they use though? I was more than a little surprised to find out that it’s actually a squash. The Dickinson Select squash more closely resembles a butternut squash than a traditional pumpkin. It’s a trademarked variety so you can’t buy seeds to grow it yourself. That got me to thinking though — what would a pie made with butternut squash taste like? It turns out that it tastes exactly like a delicious pumpkin pie. Tips on planting Bare Root Roses 'Generous Gardener' from David Austin Roses

09:57
Work continues in the home garden. This week I show you the completed garden arch and plant bare root roses at its sides. Bare root roses are plants sent with bare roots. They'll come in the autumn and winter and be dormant. You can plant them at any time, except during a really deep freeze. The rose variety I chose is called Generous Gardener from David Austin Roses. This type is a climbing rose with fragrant old rose scent and pale pink petals. What I especially like about them is that they produce beautiful hips that I'll be able to harvest for tea next autumn. Planting bare root roses begins with soaking the plants in water, working manure into the soil, and planting along with mycorrhizal fungi. Pruning fruit trees & planting bulbs in the Home Garden

18:28
Work has been slow and steady in the home garden. Though I've yet to begin laying out the garden beds (more on why in the video) I've managed to tidy up the composting area, begin pruning the fruit trees, and of course put in the garden arch and roses. You'll have seen that in the last home garden video. Today I move my incredibly heavy Belfast sink up next to the greenhouse and plant it with flowering bulbs. I also show you whats growing inside the greenhouse, we have a look at the pruning work on the trees, and have a chat about plans for the patio area. Have a question or comment? Please leave them below -- I love to hear from you! ➤ If you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!) ➤Remember to TURN ON notifications to know when new videos are out ➤ FIND LOVELY GREENS ONLINE LEARN MORE: https://lovelygreens.com/about INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lovely.greens/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LovelyGreens FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/lovely.greens.iom/ ➤ NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION https://www.subscribepage.com/lovelygreens ➤ ENQUIRIES [email protected] #backyardgardening #vegetablegarden #gardeningtips
Two Ways to plant Strawberries

10:43
I had planned to plant bare-root strawberry plants a couple of months ago but as you know, it's been a very cold start to spring. The plants arrived at the end of February and instead of chancing it outdoors, I potted the plants up and grew them on in the greenhouse. It's now finally warm enough to plant them in the garden! I've been given two types of strawberries from Thompson & Morgan to try out -- Mara des Bois, that I've really been wanting to grow, and Just Add Cream, a new one for me. The Mara des Bois have always been destined for the allotment garden but I recently decided to plant the Just Add Cream plants in a strawberry pot. The plants are smallish and I think would suit growing in a container. In this video: ✽ Introduction to Mara des Bois strawberries ✽ Seeing the pink petals of Just Add Cream strawberries ✽ How to plant a terracotta strawberry pot ✽ How to plant strawberry plants in the garden ➤ https://www.thompson-morgan.com/fruit/fruit-plants/strawberry-plants ➤ My second pair of dungarees from Lucy & Yak! A Tour of the Honey Shed

06:18
It's that time of the year again -- honey extracting time! I have a video from a few years ago showing my process ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufLnOEoaN-c&t=9s ) but I thought I'd take you on a tour around the Honey Shed. Extracting honey is a messy business so it's great to have a dedicated space for it. This video shows you the set-up and introduces some of the tools and methods used in extracting honey from the honeycomb. Please leave me comments or questions below. It would be lovely to hear from you! xx Tanya ➤ If you enjoy this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe (thank you!) ➤Remember to TURN ON notifications to know when new videos are out ➤ FIND LOVELY GREENS ONLINE LEARN MORE: http://lovelygreens.com/p/about.html INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/lovely.greens/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LovelyGreens FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/lovely.greens.iom/ ➤ NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION https://www.subscribepage.com/q2d1b7 ➤ ENQUIRIES [email protected]
