Elephant toothpaste is a very easy and funny science experiment, which results in a rapid eruption of huge amount of foam. In the past few years, I have performed this experiment with my kids over 50 times. Things we need: Level 1: beginner level -10% hydrogen peroxide -food coloring -dish soap -yeast Level2: Intermediate level -20% hydrogen peroxide* -food coloring -dish soap -saturated potassium iodide Level3: ultimate level -35% hydrogen peroxide* -food coloring -dish soap -saturated potassium iodide *20% or above hydrogen peroxide is highly corrosive, please wear glove when you deal with it Elephant toothpaste is the decomposition process of hydrogen peroxide, while yeast / potassium iodide works as a catalyst to break down the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Soap will then mixed with the oxygen and water, which turn into foam.

Things we will need: 1.Glass cup 2.Water 3.Lamp oil( or cooking oil) 4.Candle wick 5.Compass 6.Scissor 7.Tape 8.Transparent sheet 9.Food coloring (optional) 10.Marbles 11.Small stones Procedure: 1.Draw a circle on a transparent sheet and make a hole in the centre 2.Cut the circle out 3.Thread the transparent sheet with wick 4.Cut the extra wick 5.Use the tape to fix the wick 6.Add some marbles into the glass cup 7.Pour the water into the glass cup 8.Add some lamp oil into the glass cup 9.Put the wick on the top 10.Fire the wick, complete!! Notes: 1.Make sure whole wick was soaked with oil when put it into the glass cup 2.The longer the wick, the larger the flame of the water candle 3. the candle can last for several hours and the plastic will not be burnt

My kids love this project very much and we have made more than 20 putties you can keep this putty for at least several month if you store in the seal box after playing. Other notes: 1. you cannot use Iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) instead of Iron(II, III) oxide (Fe3O4), as Iron(III) oxide is not attract by magnetic. 2. you cannot use Iron powder instead of (Fe3O4), as Iron powder will turn to rust (Fe2O3) after some days 3. you cannot use toner instead of (Fe3O4), as toner cannot mixed with white glue well. 4.you can use borax instead liquid starch and you will get the same result. However, the mixture will be separated into two layers after 1week( Top layer is white glue and the bottom layer is iron oxide ), So I do not recommend using borax.

Chameleon Chemical Reaction Introduction: Chameleon chemical reaction is redox reaction which show a beautiful colour change. During the reaction, the colour is change from 1. violet 2. green 3. yellow 4. red. Procedure: 1.Prepare a breaker with 500ml warm water 2.Start the magnetic stirrer 3.Add 6 grams sodium hydroxide 4.Add 9 grams sucrose (sugar) 5.Prepare the potassium permanganate solution by adding 30mg of potassium permanganate into 30ml of water 6.Add potassium permanganate solution into the breaker and watch the colour change Principal: Permanganate MnO4 is reduced by sucrose under alkaline environment. During the reaction, KMnO4(violet) is reduced to K2MnO4(green), then it further reduced to MnO2 (brown/yellow) Notes: 1.Sodium hydroxide is corrosive, please be careful when you use it 2.Magnetic stirrer is not a must but it will mixed the solution faster 3.If more sucrose is added, the colour change will be faster 4. If more potassium permanganate is added, the reaction will start with dark violet and it is not easily to see the colour change 5.If less potassium permanganate is added, the final colour may be yellow but not red.

Black Magic Water! (Iodine Clock Reaction)

Introduction: This black magic reaction is very funny. As the reaction is so quick, you can see the colourless water suddenly turn black. This reaction is also called Landolt clock reaction Procedure: The following two solution are prepared separately and then mixed it together. Solution A: 0.38g sodium metabisulphite + 0.6g starch to 80ml water Solution B: 1.4 g potassium iodate to 200ml water. As starch and potassium iodate is difficult to dissolved in water, it is suggested to use hot water instead of cold water. After mixing two solutions, it will turn to black after 13s. Notes: 1. More the potassium iodate, faster reaction to turn black 2. It is suggested to clean the breaker at once after the experiment 3. There is another recipe using potassium iodide instead potassium iodate, but the procedure is more complex and more difficult to control the reaction timing

Most of the glow bottles on the Internet are created from commercial glow stick. It is very bright and nice, however, it is not rechargeable. The video shows you another way to make glow bottle using glow-in-the-dark sand and clear resin. Clear resin consists of two solutions, commonly named as Solution A and Solution B. The mix ratio is about 2:1, but the actual ratio varies for different brands. The solution is then poured inside a glass bottle, where it is used to glue the glow-in-the-dark sand. The glue-like clear resin will be stiffened completely after dried and the glow bottle is done. Many people may ask how can I get the glow-in-the-dark sand. I got them from my friend ,who has bought bags of glow sands from China. Therefore, I am sorry to say that I am not sure you can get the exact material in other countries. Thank you very much!

Th glow board using the ultraviolet light is extremely interesting and all the kids will love it The laser pointer i used in here is less than 50mW and blue color laser is used. There will be nothing to glow if you use a red color laser. Note: I strongly suggest to wear the protection goggles during playing with laser since i find that it is very bright when the laser beam is on the glow board

Introduction: The Briggs-Rauscher reaction is an awesome reaction which looks like a magic. When three solutions are mixed, the colour of the solution will oscillating between colourless ,amber and dark blue. Procedure: 1. Three solutions are prepared as below: Solution A:100ml water + 1.5g malonic acid + 0.4g manganese (II) sulfate + 0.1g starch Solution B: 90ml water + 10ml 1.0M sulfuric acid + 4.3g potassium iodate Solution C:100ml 10% hydrogen peroxide 2. Mix three solutions together , you will get better result if magnetic stirrer is used. 3. Awesome oscillating reaction will start! 4. The reaction will ended after about 5 -10 minutes and final solution is in dark blue colour. Principal: The chemical mechanism of this reaction is very complex and it mainly divides into two parts: 1.Non-radical process -produce iodide ion[blue colour] from malonic acid, iodate and iodine 2.Radical process(occurs only when iodine quantities is low) : -produce iodine[amber colour] and oxygen from hydrogen peroxide and iodate In here, manganese (II) sulfate is a catalyst and starch is an indicator. Notes: 1. If more solutionA is added, the oscillating cycle turn from dark blue to colourless more quickly and the reaction ends with colourless colour. 2. If more solutionB is added, th oscillating cycle turn from colourless to dark blue more quickly and reaction ends with dark blue colour. 3. If more solutionC is added , you won’t get dark blue in the initial few oscillating cycles. 4. Hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid are both corrosive, pay special attention when you deal with them. 5. Potassium iodate is difficult to be dissolved in water, so hot water is preferred to use.

This video shows you how to make a glow stick. However, as some of the ingredient(e.g. CPPO) is not easy to get, i think you can treat this as a science demonstration rather than a home-made project. Things you need: (1)20ml DEP (Diethyl phthalate) (2)2g CPPO (Bis-(2,4,5-trichloro-6-(pentyloxycarbonyl)phenyl)oxalate) (sorry for mistake in the video) (3)0.1g Sodium Acetate (4)0.05g Rubrene (5)10ml 30% Hydrogen Peroxide Notes: (1)30% hydrogen peroxide is corrosive, please pay special attention when you deal with it (2)As CPPO do not dissolve in water, hot DEP works as a organic solvent (3)As the reaction works better in alkaline, sodium acetate is weak base which works as a catalyst (4)The solution turn will brighter if more sodium acetate is added, however, it will dim more quickly Special thanks to NurdRage, before reading his video, I used TBA(tert-Butyl alcohol) & DBP (Dibutyl phthalate) instead of DEP (Diethyl phthalate). DIY Edible Playdough Introduction: This video shows you how to make play dough at home. All materials we used is edible, it is absolutely safe for kids. Things we will need: 500ml (2 cups) very hot water 500ml (2 cups) flour 250ml (1 cup) salt 10ml (2 teaspoons) cooking oil 20ml (4 teaspoons) cream of tartar (optional) Food coloring Procedure: 1.Add 500ml flour 2.Add 250ml salt 3.Add 20ml cream of tartar 4.Add 500ml very hot water 5.Mix it together (it will take quite long time) 6.Add 10ml cooking oil 7.If the playdough is still too sticky, cook it for 1-2 minute 8.Divide the playdough into several small dough 9.Add food coloring into the dough 10.Knead the dough with hands 11.You can shape the playdough using different mould now Notes: 1.Table salt should be used instead of coarse salt, otherwise, the texture of the playdough is not good enough 2.Cream of tartar is to increase the elasticity of the playdough 3.If the playdough is too dry, add more cooking oil to the playdough 4.If the playdough is too sticky, cook it a little bit longer 5.The playdough can be kept for at least several months if stored in a closed container

Introduction: Blue bottle is a funny and simple experiment. The liquid inside the bottle is initially colourless, after we shake the bottle, it will turn to blue colour magically. However, when the bottle keep stationary for a some time, it will turn to colourless again. The process can be repeatable several times Traffic light bottle is similar to blue bottle. The liquid inside the bottle is initially yellow in colour, when we shake the bottle lightly , it will turn to red colour, when we shake the bottle again, it will further turn to green colour. However, when the bottle keep stationary for a some time, it will turn to red and then to yellow . The process can be repeatable several times Procedure: Prepare a 250ml bottle ,then add some water, sodium hydroxide and glucose according to following table, make sure all the chemicals are dissolved. Then few drops of indicators can be added. Do not add too much Methylene blue for blue bottle experiment, otherwise, it take long time to turn to colourless again. A: Blue Bottle: water100ml sodium hydroxide 2g glucose 2g Methylene blue 3 drop B:Traffic Light Bottle: water100ml sodium hydroxide 1g glucose 2g Indigo carmine 15 drops 1. Sodium hydroxide is strong alkaline and very corrosive, it also called as lye. it is normally used for drain cleaning liquid. 2. Methylene blue is commonly found in aquarium. it can be used in fungal infections treatment tropical fish. It is also a common redox indicator, its oxidised state is in blue colour while the reduced state is in colourless. 3.Indigo carmine is another redox indicator, its oxidised state is in green colour while the reduced state is in yellow colour. Principle: When the bottle is being shake, methylene blue is oxidised to blue colour. when the bottle keep stationary for some time, methylene blue is reduced to colourless by glucose.
