Brain and Music group at the University of Helsinki has researched how this affects their lives. Music as a hobby helps you learn foreign languages and trains your fine motor skills. Singing and playing would also be therapeutic for the elderly and patients suffering brain injury — and make school days easier for children with learning difficulties. Meet Professor Minna Huotilainen and see what happened, when two musicians let researchers test their brains while they performed. Video: Konsta Leppänen

Kymmenet miljoonat ihmiset kärsivät hermoston rappeumasairauksista, kuten Parkinsonin tai Alzheimerin taudista. Maamme väestön ikääntyessä rappeumasairaudet lisääntyvät ja aiheuttavat yhteiskunnalle suuria kustannuksia - puhumattakaan inhimillisestä kärsimyksestä. Hermokasvutekijätutkimuksen huippuyksikön tavoitteena on tutkia niitä monimutkaisia ja monitasoisia vuorovaikutuksia, joita kasvutekijöiden, soluväliaineen tekijöiden ja hermosolujen sähköistä aktiivisuutta säätelevien ionikuljetusproteiinien välillä on. Tutkimusryhmä on löytänyt uuden hermokasvutekijän, joka näyttää suojaavan dopamiinihermosoluja rappeutumiselta ja jopa korjaavan syntyneitä vaurioita. www.helsinki.fi/yliopisto

03:47
https://www.helsinki.fi/en/programmes/master/plant-biology Life on Earth depends on solar energy captured by plants - they are the base of most food webs and underpin the functioning of all major ecosystems. Plants release the oxygen we breathe. They convert solar energy into chemical energy, providing us with food, fibres, renewable energy sources, and raw materials for many industries. Plants do not carry out these processes in isolation. They interact with other organisms and the physical and chemical environment, communicate and actively adjust to their circumstances. How do they do these things and how can we profit from understanding them?
