We have received a fantastic question about positioning a brand to work globally from Andrea Sangster of Copy Made Simple, who has asked: "How do I create a Global brand that attracts clients in other countries, whilst at the same time ensuring I don't offend or alienate people in other languages and cultures?" What I would say Andrea is that it is very rare for a service-based business to appeal to absolutely everybody and in most cases this applies to product based businesses too. You will naturally have clients you predominantly want to target and who your offer will be more attractive to, whether that is based on gender, age, location, job, company position, their personal financial position, price of your product/service, etc... the list goes on. However, once you have considered very carefully who your target client is you are naturally going to alienate certain people from your proposition. In fact, I would urge that you do so to ensure you are focusing your time and energy delivering to the people who are going to reward you the most for your service or product! Once you have completed this exercise you will then know what other cultures, if any, you want to target. The key is to create a brand that not only positions you as the market leader you are now, but to also create your logo and branding with the future in mind. This way you will start to attract the clients now that you would otherwise have to wait three years to attract if you don't think about this for 3 years. If you know you want to target clients in Spain within the next 6-24 months then you need to ensure your brand not only appeals to your UK target audience, but that it also appeals to a Spanish client too. For example, you may want to incorporate a colour from the flag of the country you want to target. By doing so, you will start to attract Spanish customers straight away because your brand has set the intention! However, if you want to appeal to one audience first and then grow your brand into other countries, you will need to look at your proposition in greater detail -- ideally with the support of a reputable branding agency such as ICE Innovation. If you do want to create a brand that appeals to an audience on a global scale, I would suggest you look to the biggest global companies who are already doing it and model what they have already invested millions of pounds into researching. You only have to look at PayPal, Facebook, Ford, Twitter, Dell, Expedia, Unilever, Sky and Hilton Hotels to see that the colour theme here that works globally is blue. There are many reasons for this, blue being calming colour is one of them. Blue can be strong and steadfast colour or light and friendly. Almost everyone likes some shade of the colour blue. Blue conveys importance and confidence without being sombre or sinister, hence the power suit of the corporate world and the uniforms of many police officers. Long considered a trusted corporate colour, blue, especially medium and darker shades, is associated with intelligence, stability & unity. Lighten that blue and you'll make it more cool, calm, clean, and limitless. You also need to consider the language that is used across cultures. You can translate your strapline word for word as an example, but will the context mean the same thing when it is translated? In this instance I would very highly recommend that you speak to a reputable translation company such as Network Languages - http://www.networklanguages.com/ Creating a global brand or a brand that will work cross culturally needs a solid brand strategy for growth. Today's advice for small business marketing and branding strategy is on the company that you keep, upgrade now. Okay, so what are we saying here? Well, basically, if you think about the company that you keep outside your business, you can probably realise that the kind of people you hang around with are the kind of person that you are, and the kind of person that you aspire to be will be the people that you want to be hanging around with. This has come to light so often and we have found it so much in our business that it doesn't matter whether it's in a personal, family, or whatever it might be, the circles that you hang around with, the influences that they have upon you as a person, really do change things in your life and it can change things in your business, too. This particular piece of advice is upgrade the company you keep in business. When you are looking for something to help you grow your business, build your brand, don't go cheap. Don't go and get someone who doesn't have the expertise that you need because guess what? It's either going to bring you lower from where you were positioned as an expert in your industry, or it's going to keep you where you are and actually restrict you, give you a glass ceiling that you can't see, but it's actually stopping you move forward. When you improve the company you keep, whether it's people who are helping with your branding, like I am today, somebody who is helping to build your website, somebody who is helping you to do your bookkeeping or your accounting, it doesn't matter what it is, when you don't get the right service, it will really affect your bottom line on the business because it costs you both in time and money in the long run. This is not good small business marketing or branding strategy. There will come a point when you're thinking about your brand, and you want that absolutely right from the beginning, there will come a point, if you haven't sought out the right designer and the right advice to get your strategy absolutely nailed for the target audience that you want to attract, that once you've built your brand or once you've designed it, once you've applied it to your website, to your literature, to your social media channels, wherever your brand can be seen, even on your product itself if you sell product, there is a point where it's too late. The kind of people that you're attracting is because of the brand itself and the branding communication that you are transmitting across all the channels that you have. Today's daily branding tip around website hosting has come about because we got a call from a very upset business owner today who had gone to a cheap website design company that had cut many corners on his website. He knew that the quality would be much lower than some of the other reputable website quotes he had got by cutting down on the price he was paying for his website, but he had no idea just how much this would come back to bite him. Well today he found out, because his entire website went down due to the cheap server the website company had put his website on and it got hacked so he lost absolutely everything and I mean EVERYTHING. Even the back-ups of his site got hacked and it turned out that he had typed his content straight into the website, so he didn't even have his website content to copy and paste back in. Had he come to ICE Innovation in the first place he would have been advised to write all of his website copy into Word documents or some other form of content writing program so if anything happened, he would always have that to fall back on. He would have had a totally secure website and it would have been backed up on one of the best servers in the world. You see, this is why it costs more to work with quality providers. Brand Design, Dissected At How to Build a Brand, we've made it our mission to educate people just like you in the art of branding. Branding is not a just a logo, or a business name, or a webpage -- it's a collection of experiences that will create the feelings that people have about you, your products, and your brand. It's intangible, but wholly indispensable. Brand design varies for each individual brand, but all the best design strategies have some things in common, and they are as follows: Great brand design is created with your specific audience and ideal clients in mind. It will stir up identical (or nearly identical) feelings in every member of your target audience. This is accomplished through a consistent message, but it's also made possible because your ideal clients all share the same pain, problems, wants, or needs. Successful brand design elicits the specific emotions that you wish to conjure from your audience. Human beings are emotionally driven, and therefore, most purchases are based on how well any brand can stir up emotion. Effective brand design does not separate the brand and the brand's design. Instead of asking a branding agency for "a design for your brand," you will want to ask for "a brand design." Your brand design is your brand until public perception takes over and your brand design is a memory trigger for all that's good about your brand. Simplicity can be more difficult to achieve than complexity. It is also more effective in the realm of brand design. There isn't always a bigger and better idea. Often, the best ideas come from gut feelings and initial impressions -- which is what you're going for whilst building a brand identity. Great brand design is flexible. An intuitive brand designer knows that times will change and your brand design must be able to change with it. I'm not talking about redesigning here, but I am talking about small shifts that will allow your brand to evolve, to stay current, and to usher your brand into the future...indefinitely. All brand design endeavours should follow a brand strategy. A brand strategy keeps all involved focussed on the desired end result and keeps messages congruent -- which will build trust and a positive reputation for your brand. Lay it all out before you begin. Your brand strategy is your map; the brand design is your journey and your destination. A professional brand designer will take the time to learn about your values and to understand the heart of your brand. Ideally, a brand designer should be involved from the very beginning -- from the time you begin to nurture your brand concept. With an intimate understanding of your brand's purpose, a brand design will be created that transforms the intangible to the visible. Brand design isn't about creating a pretty picture that "goes with" your brand. To the contrary, your brand design will be your brand until your brand takes flight. It's that important. So often the presumption is that if you have a website then you can have only one domain pointing to it. You may also have heard that you actually can have more than one domain name pointing to the same website displaying your branding and services. This is true, but you must be careful how you point these domain names. Here is why... If you have simple "web forwarding" on a domain name to redirect people to another domain name where your website is hosted, Google will view this as two websites and therefore duplicate content. Google looks at every website on the internet and what it does not like to see is duplicate content, i.e. more than one website that has the same textual content in it. Your website can be penalized as a result. There is a way that you can have more than one domain pointing to your website and what's more you can add even greater value to your website while you build your brand! This means that you can now choose a main domain for your website that is keyword focused. Because Google reads the domain name of your website first, imagine what it would think if your main keyword was in the domain name -- BRILLIANT! Straight away it can associate this with the search terms your prospective customers are using in the search field. This means that when your website appears in the search engine results listings it will display that keyword focused domain name. So your prospective customers will also see a keyword focused domain there too and will see a direct correlation. And because you have a domain name that is potentially more company name related, you can make this display the website if it is typed into the address bar of the browser. How good is that for your brand management. To achieve this all you need to do is set up a "301" redirect (your webmaster will know what this is if worth their salt) from the company name domain name to the keyword focused domain name and Voila! Today's advice is how the market leaders flex their expert muscles to position themselves as the market experts in their field. As a business owner, no doubt you want to be the market leader in your niche, in your industry. It means you're going to have to flex certain expert muscles so when you communicate, your audience, the ideal prospects you're looking for will see you as the market leader. What do we mean by market leader? Well, that's it, we want to be seen as the go-to expert, the obvious first choice when they are thinking about the problem they have that they need a solution to and they're looking for a provider of that solution. Now when we think about hamburger, sport shoes, a car, we automatically have a brand that comes to mind. That brand is one that we trust, one that we find the most fashionable, the most attractive, the most reliable, or the one that we tried before and we know that we can go back to them. That's the kind of response that you want from your customers and your prospects. Of course, when we talk about how we feel about a service, how we feel about the experience we've had with a service or a product, it's what we tell others and that's the same for your business as well. As much as you believe you're the market leader in your industry, it's what other people say about you that's going to make the difference. How you communicate your expertise is going to be absolutely key to how that is going to change the perception in the minds of those prospects. So what does that mean? When we say flexing muscles, there are things that you have about your business, which if you communicate about them correctly, will start to initiate that thinking in your prospects and your clients about you being the market leader. What are those things? Well, straightaway, nowadays it's about adding value. So for you, the first muscle you can flex is the one where you can offer advice. Yes, that's right, it's just freely-given advice that you can give to your customers and your prospects. The channels you can do this really effectively through are social media, so just like you're seeing here today on a video, I'm providing you with some fantastic advice. You can do the same for your customers, preempting the problems and the solutions they're looking for, just by getting that information out there on the social media. We promote our expertise through Facebook and YouTube primarily, of course through other channels as well, so you can do the same, too, and you will get such great reach out there to the customers and prospects you would not normally get to.
