He was nominated by President George W. Bush in March 2004 and appointed in July 2004. Mr. Dudas previously served as acting Under Secretary and Director, and Deputy Under Secretary and Deputy Director from 2002 to 2004. As Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, Mr. Dudas advises the President of the United States, the Secretary of Commerce, and the Administration about intellectual property matters. As Director of the USPTO, he administers the laws of granting patents and trademarks and the day-to-day management of the $1.8 billion agency and its more than 8,900 employees. As head of the world's leading intellectual property (IP) office, Mr. Dudas develops and articulates Administration positions on patent, copyright, and trademark issues, both domestic and foreign. He promotes strong IP policy globally, including strategies to thwart the theft of U.S. IP around the world. And he implements policies and initiatives that provide innovators with quality, timely patent and trademark examinations.

Everyday Edisons®, a reality series that chronicles the development of everyday idea people's inventions, flew 25 finalists into Charlotte, NC to audition for a spot on Season 5 of the show. Inventors submitted their product idea to a nationwide casting call on EdisonNation.com, and as finalists, were given the chance to pitch their idea in person to the show's producers and judges, including Louis Foreman, creator of Everyday Edisons; Mindy Grossman, chief executive officer of HSN; Jon Dudas, president of FIRST and former director of the United States Patent & Trademark Office; and Carolyn Forte, director of home appliances, cleaning products, textiles and paper products at Good Housekeeping Magazine. Following the in-person auditions, Everyday Edisons producers will select ten inventors to appear on the show and will document the process of bringing their products to market, all at no cost of the inventor. Everyday Edisons has brought such products to market as the Gyro Bowl®, invented by Brad and Melinda Shepard (2.4 million units sold), Emery Cat®, invented by Michael Diep (2.3 million units sold), Mister Steamy®, invented by Will Howe and Ric Payne (2.9 million units sold), and Befudiom, invented by Wendy Hampton (recently released in Toys 'R Us stores). Edison Nation CEO, Louis Foreman, tells inventor Eric Huber, he's been chosen for Season 4 of "Everyday Edisons!" Eric Huber has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. As early as 8 years old, he began coming up with ideas, writing them down and sometimes turning those ideas into creations. He once even built a 5" tall, fully functional guillotine for a book report on the French Revolution. At the age of 16, Eric began Easels Creations, a start-up born from his love of woodworking in his father's garage, where he designed and made decorative and functional easels for businesses, students, and artists. Seeing the success of his small company while still in high school, Eric realized the possibilities related to designing, making and selling things, which officially led to a lifelong passion for inventing. Throughout Eric's career, he explored many opportunities, including a brief stint as an actor and model; a second start-up, IDEA, inc., which supplied products and services to the local Oregon entertainment industry; and his current position as vice president of one of the largest commercial playground and outdoor recreation rep companies in the country. Even still, the inventing bug never left Eric, who continued to invent on the side as a hobby, creating a portfolio of 90+ ideas. In 2009, things would take a turn and inventing would become more than just a hobby. Eric, with his portfolio in tow, attended a Las Vegas inventor convention, where the featured speaker was Edison Nation CEO, Louis Foreman. Inspired by his words, Eric approached Louis to ask for his advice and was introduced to Everyday Edisons and Edison Nation. He began submitting ideas to Edison Nation and auditioned for Everyday Edisons during the Season 4 casting call. It was there that a household product idea sparked by one of his wife's unique housecleaning methods caught the team's attention.
