098: How Reliable Is Language?

05:00
1) "Certain words are not clearly defined and as such, we debate over them." I agree. There are words out there that are so nebulous in meaning that they need to be clearly defined first before any debate can begin. If we're not on the same page, then the debate cannot progress. 2) "Where are there significant problems when it comes to conveying meaning?" Extremely encompassing words such as, God, spirituality, good, mediocre etc. If you're trying to communicate something, but you stretch the meaning of the word so much that it could mean anything then you're communicating nothing. 3) Point of contention: Music should have an exact definition. The problem here is music is subjective and therefore, extremely encompassing in scope. Narrowing it down to a single definition is unfeasible since there are cases where someone defines X as music, but someone else says X is not music. It also depends on how we're defining music. Is the definition going to be nebulous or a bit specific? Some people define music as organized sound. Well, if you're going to define music as such then you would have to concede a multitude of examples which fit that definition, but you wouldn't be so quick to define as "music." 4) Point of Contention #2: Period/Style Labels being classified depending on time period and culture they arose in. I'm assuming you're referring to how music is classified, and if so I see no problem with this at all. Music evolves, yes, but does that mean that the music made back in the day that fit perfectly into a genre based upon context should be reclassified into another genre? You're also forgetting the fact that classifying music by genre is highly disputed to begin with. There are people who will argue that music X has similar elements to genre A, while another group of people will say it fits better in genre B. Again, I see this as unfeasible and very problematic.

If you can lead the mind away and redirected it towards whatever suggestion you want to impose, you can virtually hack someone's brain. This is a great example on a small scale. Should someone in government do this same thing on a mass scale, the world would be a very dangerous place.... oh wait... Barack Obama does... JavaScript: The Good Parts

01:03:48
Google Tech Talks Web Exponents presented by Doug Crockford February 27, 2009 blog post: http://google-code-updates.blogspot.com/2009/03/doug-crockford-javascript-good-parts.html JavaScript is a language with more than its share of bad parts. It went from non-existence to global adoption in an alarmingly short period of time. It never had an interval in the lab when it could be tried out and polished. JavaScript has some extraordinarily good parts. In JavaScript there is a beautiful, highly expressive language that is buried under a steaming pile of good intentions and blunders. The best nature of JavaScript was so effectively hidden that for many years the prevailing opinion of JavaScript was that it was an unsightly, incompetent abomination. This session will expose the goodness in JavaScript, an outstanding dynamic programming language. Within the language is an elegant subset that is vastly superior to the language as a whole, being more reliable, readable and maintainable. Speaker: Douglas Crockford Douglas Crockford is a product of our public education system. A registered voter, he owns his own car. He has developed office automation systems. He did research in games and music at Atari. He was Director of Technology at Lucasfilm. He was Director of New Media at Paramount. He was the founder and CEO of Electric Communities/Communities.com. He was founder and CTO of State Software, where he discovered JSON. He is interested in Blissymbolics, a graphical, symbolic language. He is developing a secure programming language. He is now an architect at Yahoo! and the world's foremost living authority on JavaScript.

His small flashes of humor are very welcome, and bridge the gap nicely between sitting in front of a video series and being in an actual classroom. His lightness of style "humanizes" the experience of learning this way."
