WHERE GOOD IDEAS COME FROM by Steven Johnson

04:07
One of our most innovative, popular thinkers takes on-in exhilarating style-one of our key questions: Where do good ideas come from? With Where Good Ideas Come From, Steven Johnson pairs the insight of his bestselling Everything Bad Is Good for You and the dazzling erudition of The Ghost Map and The Invention of Air to address an urgent and universal question: What sparks the flash of brilliance? How does groundbreaking innovation happen? Answering in his infectious, culturally omnivorous style, using his fluency in fields from neurobiology to popular culture, Johnson provides the complete, exciting, and encouraging story of how we generate the ideas that push our careers, our lives, our society, and our culture forward. Beginning with Charles Darwin's first encounter with the teeming ecosystem of the coral reef and drawing connections to the intellectual hyperproductivity of modern megacities and to the instant success of YouTube, Johnson shows us that the question we need to ask is, What kind of environment fosters the development of good ideas? His answers are never less than revelatory, convincing, and inspiring as Johnson identifies the seven key principles to the genesis of such ideas, and traces them across time and disciplines. Most exhilarating is Johnson's conclusion that with today's tools and environment, radical innovation is extraordinarily accessible to those who know how to cultivate it. Where Good Ideas Come From is essential reading for anyone who wants to know how to come up with tomorrow's great ideas. Collaborative Efforts to Improve Construction Innovation

06:53
After significant specialization in design and construction for much of the twentieth century, there has been a movement over the past two decades to promote collaboration between builders and architectural designers in both industry and academia. In practice, such collaborative efforts have produced the most successful and widely known structures in the world. In academia, students are beginning to learn to value other professionals and at some institutions are beginning to develop a deeper appreciation for counterparts outside of their discipline. This study examines whether expanded collaboration outside of the traditional constructor-architect paradigm could provide value for practice or academia. A process is presented that featured the collaboration of industry coupled with faculty and students from departments of building science and industrial design at a major U.S. university. From this now continuing process in its fourth year, innovative products and tools for the construction industry have been developed that provide the opportunity to increase efficiency and productivity in construction practice. These products also provide academic opportunities for students and faculty to pursue additional research, patents, and grants. Results of work to date detail successes and opportunities for improvement of this collaborative effort. (By: C. Ben Farrow and Paul W. Holley from Auburn University)

Ratcheting Wrenches

03:05
See review: http://www.aconcordcarpenter.com/?p=1012 Subscribe to my free newsletter: http://www.aconcordcarpenter.com/subscribe Craftsman introduces two new innovations to their line of ratcheting wrenches that will clear up some space in the toolbox. The Craftsman Universal Ratcheting Wrench 7-piece Set features a universal tooth design on the ratcheting box end that works on six different types of fasteners. The Craftsman Ratcheting Open End Wrench 4-piece Set boasts Craftsman's patented open-ended ratcheting design on both ends, giving the user two different sized ratcheting wrenches in one tool. The Craftsman Universal Ratcheting Wrench combines a universal tooth design that grips six different types of nuts and bolts, including six-point, 12-point, partially-rounded, external TORX, square and spline, and a ratcheting box end -- all in one. The ratcheting box end is great to loosen and tighten nuts and bolts in hard to reach places where picking up the wrench to turn the fastener is not an option. The user can also flip the wrench around to use a reinforced open end that reduces tip spread under heavy load to prevent rounding the corners of fasteners. The grip of the wrench is a thick, rounded beam that is easy to grasp and provides comfort and strength under high torque. The matte surface finish provides a non-slip grip for excellent control and high contrast markings, making the size identification easy. The set comes with a reusable caddy, which can be hung on pegboard or tucked neatly away in a tools storage drawer, and weighs 2.5 pounds. The Craftsman Universal Ratcheting Wrench 7-piece Set is offered in both inch (#21028) and metric (#21030). SAE wrench sizes include 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 11/16 and 5/8 inch. Metric sizes include 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 millimeter. The Craftsman Universal Ratcheting Wrench 7-piece Set retails for $49.99. The Craftsman Ratcheting Open End Wrench 4-piece Set combines the speed of ratcheting with the access of the open end wrench. The ratcheting open end wrench features Craftsman's patented tooth design on each end, allowing the user to turn nuts and bolts without lifting the tool off the fastener, making jobs faster and easier. The traditional jaw shape allows the user to turn even the most damaged nuts and bolts, and the jaw tips are great for grabbing hard-to-reach fasteners. Each wrench features two different sizes of jaw openings, giving the user eight common sized wrenches and the convenience of knowing that the user has the right size for the job. The set comes with a reusable caddy. The Craftsman Ratcheting Open End Wrench 4-piece Set is offered in inch (#21936) or metric(#21937). SAE set sizes include 5/16 x 3/8, 7/16 x 1/2, 9/16 x 5/8 and 11/16 x ¾ in. Metric set sizes include 8 x 10, 13 x 14, 15 x 16 and 17 x 19 milimeter. The Craftsman Ratcheting Open End Wrench 4-piece Set retails for $24.99. All Craftsman hand tools have a lifetime guarantee and are available at Craftsman.com or at Sears stores nationwide.
Meaningful Innovation: Whether to Design or Evolve?

01:11:14
Google Tech Talk September 29, 2010 Presented by Steve Jurvetson. ABSTRACT Many of the interesting challenges in computer science, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology entail the construction of complex systems. As these systems transcend human comprehension, will we continue to design them or will we increasingly evolve them? As we design for evolvability, the locus of learning shifts from the artifacts themselves to the process that created them. There is no mathematical shortcut for the decomposition of a neural network or genetic program, no way to "reverse evolve" with the ease that we can reverse engineer the artifacts of purposeful design. The beauty of compounding iterative algorithms (evolution, fractals, organic growth, art) derives from their irreducibility. Google itself is a complex system that seeks to perpetually innovate. Leadership in complex organizations shifts from direction setting to a wisdom of crowds. The role of upper management is to tune the parameters of communication. Leaders can embrace a process that promotes innovation with emergent predictability more than they can hope to dictate the product of innovation itself. Innovation is critical to economic growth, progress, and the fate of the planet, yet it seems so random. While innovation may appear inscrutable at the atomic level, patterns emerge in the aggregate nonetheless. A critical pattern, spanning centuries, is that the pace of innovation is perpetually accelerating, and it is exogenous to the economy. Rather, it is the combinatorial explosion of possible innovation-pairings that creates economic growth. Steve Jurvetson is a Managing Director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ.com), a leading venture capital firm with affiliate offices around the world and one of the most active early-stage investors. Internationally, DFJ was the main investor in Baidu and Skype. Steve's current board positions include Tesla Motors, Synthetic Genomics, D-Wave (quantum computers), NeoPhotonics, SpaceX, Boxbe, and Wowd. Steve was the founding VC investor in Hotmail, Interwoven, and Kana, and led DFJ's investments in various other companies acquired for $8B. Previously, he was an R&D Engineer at HP, where seven of his communications chip designs were fabricated. His prior technical experience also includes programming, materials science research and computer design at HP, the Center for Materials Research, and Mostek. At Stanford, he finished his BSEE in 2.5 years and graduated #1 in his class. He also received an MSEE and MBA from Stanford.

Google Brussels TechTalk "Internet Privacy"

44:14
Ever wondered what data Google's search engine collects and why we retain search logs for certain periods of time? Our first ever Brussels Tech Talk on 28 January 2010 was about this and other questions on online privacy, given that it was Data Protection Day. Dr Alma Whitten, Google's engineering lead for privacy, addressed a full room of policy makers and other interested stakeholders. Alma demonstrated how we harness the power of data to "learn from the good guys, fight the bad guys, and invent the future". While the technology is complicated, the explanation is simple: log data enable our engineers to refine algorithms for the benefit of all search users. If clicking on the top results occurs for any given query, it signals that we are doing something right. If people are hitting 'next page' or typing in another query, we learn something is wrong. Every time a user searches on the web, you benefit from what Google has learned from millions of previous searches. However, rather than a solved problem, the search science is still in its infancy. By launching hundreds of innovations in search just during the last year, we're constantly trying to improve search so you'll hopefully find among the first results the website that contains the answer you were looking for in midst of more than a trillion unique URLs. We aim to always balance innovative product development with a serious respect for users' privacy. For us, this process starts with providing transparency and allowing users control. Alma explained the ways we're working to provide our users with more transparency and choice: things like the Ads Preferences Manager, Google Dashboard, and Data Liberation Front. And she referred to the challenges engineers face to achieve transparency and control with respect to different categories of data such as logged-in vs. unauthenticated data. P.S. The video's sound quality could be better - we're arranging for superior recording equipment for the next Brussels TechTalk.

Waste To Watts - Dell Social Innovation Competition

03:38
http://www.dellsocialinnovationcompetition.com/ideaView?id=08780000000PDClAAO Waste To Watts (W2W): Solution-Based Recycling Our mission is to create innovative products from re-purposed electronic waste to meet the energy dilemmas of the developing world. The Problem Imagine yourself at the hospital bed of a loved one. The doctors and nurses have rushed in to resuscitate. His or her life hangs in the balance, not because of a device malfunction or health complication, but a power outage. After volunteering as hospital technicians in Africa during the summer of 2009, James Molini, Adam Kurzrok, and Chris Hamman (advisor), who witnessed harrowing situations akin to the one previously described, were inspired to form Waste to Watts only months later. The World Bank has quantified the problem and went so far as to cite energy poverty in developing countries as one of the worlds most widespread and debilitating crises. Due to energy shortages and inefficiencies, electricity blackouts stemming from load shedding and mismanagement can blanket communities for hours every week, sometimes every day. A 2007 study of hospitals in 10 developing world nations revealed that the most common cause of failure in medical devices is an inadequate power supply. Energy poverty not only plagues hospitals, but also small businesses and households, who would never be able to afford the luxury of $300 generators or even a $70 uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Where the electrical grid is available, the overstrained infrastructure is subject to surges, daily blackouts, and enormous variations in line voltages. These problems result in routine damage to electronics (both consumer and medical) and hospitals often find themselves discarding or abandoning a $5,000 piece of equipment due to a $1 electrical component failure. OECD nations donate hundreds of millions of dollars worth of medical equipment to the developing world each year; yet, according to the World Health Organization, nearly 80% of medical equipment in the developing world does not work. Ongoing data collection by Duke University's Engineering World Health reveals that nearly a third of these devices are damaged due to power-related failures. Looming alongside this massive energy crisis is the continued proliferation of enormous quantities of environmentally harmful electronic waste around the world. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, in 2007 a total of 157 million computer-related electronics were discarded in the US alone, an estimated 80% of which ended up in landfills. Further, almost three-quarters of hazardous heavy metals in landfills come from these electronics. In addition, the Blacksmith Institute named Used Dead Lead Acid Battery Recycling as one of the Worlds 10 Worst Pollution Problems in 2008. In countless communities across the world, dead lead acid batteries are disposed of improperly. Due to their limited lifetime they continue to be produced in large quantities, especially with the growing consumption of motorized vehicles in the developing world. The Solution: Introducing the CellSaver Back-Up Power Supply Waste to Watts pursues a mission to create innovative products from re-purposed electronic waste to meet the growing energy demands of the developing world. We have designed a proprietary, low-cost, modular back-up power supply that will run devices ranging from EKGs and patient monitors to computers and household lights for several hours when the power goes out. How are we cutting costs? The most expensive components of the device are made of what is essentially trash. The technology that we have developed is essentially an extremely low-cost alternative to a back-up power supply system or UPS. E-waste clip used by permission, courtesy Media that Matters & Arts Engine. Originally created for Media that Matters film Festival 2008, by Ian Lynam, Morgan Currie, and Lyndsay Utz.

Team Losi bucked the trend of making another copycat version of the all-to-common sedan design with the narrow centrally weighted JRXS. The Type-R retains all the hi-tech features of the JRXS as well as the numerous small changes and design innovations that the team has developed over the last few racing seasons to further enhance the versatility, adjustability, efficiency and performance. Although the Type-R comes with a setup for foam tire racing, it still retains the unique ability to be quickly and easily converted for asphalt/rubber tire racing. The unmatched combination of cutting edge design, hi-tech materials and machined parts make the JRXS Type-R the most feature packed sedan chassis ever offered for pro-class competition.

3-D Printers Are Here -- and They Make More Than You Think

04:02
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish When we print something, a flat page comes to mind. For example, you might use a photocopier.Photocopiers print in two dimensions. Now, imagine how this would work for three dimensions. A machine prints layers of material — usually plastic — one on top of the other. The layers are very thin — usually one-fifth or one-tenth of a millimeter. The layers then combine to form a solid object. There are many versions of this kind of technology. But the basic idea is the same for most 3-D printers. The process is called additive fabrication. These 3-D printers have become powerful tools for product designers. Computer-aided design programs use software to direct the printer. Designers can then create a solid model in a short time and easily make changes and tests. The 3-D printing technology was first developed in the nineteen eighties. But high cost put them out of the reach of many researchers and businesses. Early printers were limited. High cost and limited uses meant the 3-D printer market was small. Now, lower-cost printers are available to a much wider market, including small businesses and individuals. In January, the global technology company Hewlett-Packard agreed to sell 3-D printers manufactured by Stratasys. Stratasys has made 3-D printers for years. Last year, it introduced a 3-D printer for less than fifteen thousand dollars. More companies are using 3-D printing to directly manufacture some products. For example, Freedom of Creation, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, prints furniture and art. Bespoke Innovations in San Francisco, California, wants to design and print artificial limbs. Co-founder Scott Summit says these prosthetic limbs can be designed exactly for a patient's body for less money than existing products. But 3-D printing still has limits. For example, metals are more difficult to print than plastics. However, airplane maker Boeing prints some airplane parts. And printers are being used to create some rare parts for old machines. For people interested in new technology, a New York based company, Makerbot, sells kits to people who want to build a small 3-D printer. Some kits cost less than one thousand dollars. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. For transcripts and MP3s go to voaspecialenglish.com. EcoLife Stores

00:31
Mission: The EcoLife Store aims to provide environmentally friendly products to communities in order to improve the health and sanitation of current living standards while reducing carbon emissions. Through education and marketing efforts, EcoLife products can replace kerosene, three stone fires, and other harmful items used for everyday needs, in order to better the lives of the people. Vision: Rural Indian villages lack access to a secure 24-hour energy supply. Many rural people do not have the means to buy electric water filtration systems and remain unaware of the negative impacts of smoke inhalation and chemical pesticides. Eco-friendly products that remedy these problems are currently provided through non-profit agencies or sold directly by distributors. Rather than endorsing any specific product, the concept of EcoLife is that local people, especially the poor, should have a choice in deciding which products are right for them. The store is also a centre, where customers can learn about the threat of global warming and ways to reduce their households carbon footprint. We offer a selection of low-cost solar lights, smokeless stoves, and other items with the aim of expanding our product range in the future. The EcoLife Store was officially launched as a project of the Auroville Village Action Group in the Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu, India at the end of November 2009, and has sold over $4000 worth of products each month to customers, some of which subside on less than $2 a day. Unlike competitors, we focus on a wide array of environmental problems that plague village development and will provide more products complete with education and after-sales as solutions. Currently, EcoLife operates as a retail outlet that is partnered with a Microfinance Institution, which acts as the franchise owner. The strength of such an organization is for the opportunity to implement social change providing alternatives to traditional, harmful methods that afflict so many of Indias poorest. As a retailer, we harness Indias best eco-friendly innovations under one roof, demanding the best quality and durable products for long usage under harsh conditions. According to the International Energy Agency, approximately 404.5 million people have limited access to electricity, which reduces water sanitation, health, agriculture, education, economic activity, thus perpetuating poverty. If EcoLife products are adopted on a mass scale, the environmental (total carbon reduction) and social benefits (increased economic productivity for EcoLife Indian distributors and rural economies, health, education, etc) are enormous. The poor need access to products that will provide them with a better standard of living and the Indian middle-class and wealthy markets seek eco-friendly products because they understand its value. Because of the vast opportunity in scale, we are willing to invest and take investments with the end goal of franchising throughout all of India like an eco-Wal-mart. Therefore, EcoLife Stores has the potential to dramatically lower the footprint of an emerging economy that is on its way to becoming one of the larger Greenhouse Gas emitters. In doing so, EcoLife is reaching the Triple Bottom Line: People, Planet, Profit.
