Hand-me-down Plants

A New Leaf traces a year of growing seasons at The Leaf, Merilyn Simonds' acreage in eastern Ontario. A lifelong gardener, Simonds works the soil and the soul for wide-ranging revelations about everything from flowers that keep time, to the strange gift of compost, to great gardens of the world, to things lost and found underground. "Two green thumbs up for Merilyn Simonds. This shining book, sparked by her garden blogs on everything from bugs to peas to survivor elms, evolves as a gardener does, from hope to realism and back to hope. Simonds reminds us that our contact with each garden bed (she has twenty-six, one for each letter of the alphabet!) lets us touch yet another aspect of our selves. A New Leaf is a by-your-bedside companion, composed to seed our dreams." - Molly Peacock, author of The Paper Garden "Like stories passed friend to friend, these wise, funny, colourful pieces enrich our understanding of plants, landscapes and life. A book to grow by, and share." - Sarah Harmer "I certify Merilyn Simonds the Saint of Frugal Gardening, for her amazing and helpful skills with plants, other edibles, and people too." - from The Year of the Flood, God's Gardener Scroll, awarded by Margaret Atwood http://www.booklounge.ca/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780385670456&ref=video_yt_simonds3

Using your Phototron Step 9: Watering your newly transplanted plants

01:56
Okay, now that your plants have been transplanted and are nice and cozy in their new home in the Sphagnum moss, let's go over the watering instructions for this next stage. First off, let's remember that after you have transplanted your plants you will be continuing to use the 1/48 FEED for only an additional 10 days. On the 20th day after transplant you will then be switching to the 1/16 FEED. To water your plants inside the Phototron™, do the following: • SHAKE THE JUG OF THE FEED VIGOROUSLY BEFORE USING. • Use ONE QUART of the 1/48 FEED until the 20th day after transplant. • Water the plants in the Phototron™ with this measured amount of your FEED directly into the soil medium, at the base of each plant. This will distribute the required nutrients to each of your plants equally. • Raise one panel at a time and pour an approximate equal amount of the FEED into each of the 6 sides. Be careful to not let any water run between the liner and the base. • Water the Phototron™ so as to have a puddle in the base for 23 out of 24 hours with one hour of no puddle. • Check your system every eight hours for puddle status. If puddle exists, do not re-water. If no puddle exists, re-water your Phototron™. • DO NOT WATER THE PHOTOTRON™ FROM THE TOP AND DO NOT SPRAY PLANTS WITH NUTRIENT FORMULAS. The nutrients will dissolve the protective coating on the inside of the acrylic panels. (PLEASE NOTE: During these 10 days after transplant, you may notice your plants start growing rapidly. When your plants get to about 8 inches tall, they will be nearing the 25-watt incandescent bulb. If you purchased a SL-18 fluorescent lamp it's now time for you to turn off this bulb or replace it with the SL-18 fluorescent lamp (not included, sold separately, see accessory catalog). The SL-18 is a state of the art lamp generating the correct light spectrum to insure your plants will have the optimal inter-nodal lengths the system was designed to create. For even more illumination from the center of the Phototron™, simply install a Double SL-18 Socket Kit and two SL-18 lamps (sold separately), all of which are listed in, the ACCESSORY CATALOG. Other accessories, which would maximize your plant output, are the REFLECTIVE SOIL MULCH and the REFLECTIVE HOOD SHIELD.)

Montreal Florist-Call 514-312-5366-Bloomex Flowers

01:13
http://bloomex.ca/florist/montreal Florists are in the business of beauty. Anyone who has visited a thriving flower shop is immediately greeted with the fragrance of fresh blossoms, and the bright colors of the bouquets and arrangements. Giving flowers to someone special immediately cheers up a gloomy day. They have a positive effect on most people, and add a touch of class to any event just by being there. We associate certain holidays with floral delivery, and often send flowers to comfort someone who has experienced a loss. Most of us live near a retail flower shop. Large cities are often home to a long list of stores providing a wide range of floral services. There are basically two types of florists, including those who simply display and sell cut flowers, and those who arrange and deliver them. The old-fashioned floral stand, or "bucket" shop, provides a constant supply of the freshest seasonal blossoms at the lowest prices. They rely on rapid turnover of their product, and are great for picking up a bunch of flowers to take to a dinner party. The other type of retail shop takes things a step further. They not only sell simple wrapped bouquets, but their emphasis is on creating and delivering floral displays for special occasions such as holidays, birthdays, weddings, and funerals. Usually they employ knowledgeable and talented designers capable of creating original and attractive arrangements. They may be members of worldwide flower delivery service, and can send flowers practically anywhere. This business has gone through many changes since its origins during late 19th century. While there are no official records as to who really opened the first retail flower shop in the United States, the Society of American Florists was formed in 1884. Shortly after that time a group of florists banded together to form an organization dedicated to developing and standardizing flower orders on a national basis. Prior to that time, people sending flowers relied on trains or the mail. This new group relayed orders to shops in various cities via telegraph, and coined the term "flowers by wire". That original idea was immediately picked up, and several new wire services emerged to compete for the coast to coast delivery market. They developed a complex system of flower merchants who exchanged orders with other members. Most relied on a catalog of seasonal flowers with suggested prices, and customers would choose something from the photographs. The sending florist would receive a percentage of the cost, and the receiving florist would also be paid for his work. Although many changes have occurred with time, this is still the basic foundation for these networks. During the 1970s the industry rapidly expanded. Former sixties flower children spurred a growth in sales of indoor green plants and accessories. Retail shops grew rapidly in number, and reached a peak during the the 1980s before slowing. Part of this slowdown was the result of the proliferation of non-traditional floral outlets such as grocery stores. Some old-school retailers kept waiting for that bubble to burst, but were disappointed. Mega-store floral outlets have kept on growing, stimulated by higher profit margins. Another factor affecting florists was the the rapid expansion of imported flowers of all kinds. Most flowers sold in the United States used to be grown locally, with regions such as southern California leading the way. When the costs of running a greenhouse skyrocketed due to inflated energy expenses, many growers were unable to maintain profitability. It became cheaper to fly in a fresh product from South America or Europe on a daily basis, driving many growers out of business. In spite of these factors, the floral business continues to thrive today. Twenty-first century florists now rely on computers now instead of telegraphs. Flower delivery remains at the core of these enterprises, and is still popular in spite of high gasoline prices. There will always be occasions that demand the artistry and expertise that only your professional florist can provide. In the end, no one really needs an excuse to enjoy the fragrance and beauty of fresh flowers. Montreal Florist offering online shopping with same day shipping across Canada. YouTube Field of Pink Daisies

00:13
Pink Daisy The form of the Daisy is admired by all, so that it is strange that more persons do not grow the lovely Daisies known as Pyrethrums. The flowers are bright in color and are borne on long stems. They might be called Spring Chrysanthemums, for they bloom principally in June. Many of the sorts are attractively doubled. The colors range from deep rich crimson to light pink and white. They grow 2 feet to 3 feet tall. The proper botanical name is Chrysanthemum coccineam; the catalogs also call them Pyrethrum roseum and hybridum. UTILIZE. The English are so fond of these flowers that they have many named varieties. Of Pyrethrums defunked The Ladies' Field writes: "Amongst the most satisfactory of all the flowers in the garden we may count double Pyrethrums. They are of almost infinite variety, which time seems powerless to wither, and which custom never stales. Nearly every year sees some new development, the result of skillful raising and discriminating selection. They have many good qualities to recommend them. These flowers are extremely showy, and are as hardy as they are effective. They are of the easiest possible culture, and as cut flowers they are invaluable, lasting for full two weeks in full and fresh beauty. This, when one is away from one's own garden and has to barter for flowers for the good contentment of the moment, is a great desideratum. In the borders they last for several months. Pyrethrums are in their height of beauty in June, but by means of judicious thinning and stopping, and by the entire prevention of the formation of anything like seed, they may be kept blossoming all through the Summer. If this be too much trouble, and a continued succession is not wanted, the plants may be cut right down after their Midsummer blossoming, when they will spring up again with rejuvenated vigor, and blossom gaily again in the Autumn as vigorously as if it were their first effort for the year." GENERAL. The Pyrethrums grow nicely, even in partial shade, but they must have perfect drainage. An important point in their culture is alluded to above; they should be prevented from seeding and if cut down directly after they have produced their main crop of bloom; they will bloom profusely late in Summer. PROPAGATION. Sow the seeds or divide the plants in Spring.

Using your Phototron Step 8: Transplanting your plants from the germination cups to the Sphagnum bed

01:56
As mentioned above, when your plants reach a height of 5 inches and developed root growth that has reached the bottom of the germination cup, it will them be time to free them from these germination cups and into the bed of Sphagnum moss covering the liner of the Phototron™. Hopefully by this time you have removed all of the weak looking seedlings from each of the six germination cups so you now only have one 5 inch plant in each of the six cups. To transplant your plants into the Phototron™ Sphagnum bed, do the following: • First, you must re-hydrate the bed of Sphagnum moss with another one gallon jug of PLAIN DISTILLED or R.O. water. To do this, add one quarter gallon of this water to the moss every two hours until the jug is empty. • Next. dig a hole in the soil medium between the vertical lamp tubes, approximately 2 inches away from edge. • Next, remove the plastic cup from around the soil medium. The best way to do this is to use a pair of scissors and cut the sides of the plastic cup from top to bottom. • Next, bury the plant up to the first true leaf structure. The first true leaf structure is determined as being the first leaves that have the shape typical to the species of plant you are planting. • Next, you are going to want to dig a hole in the prepared Sphagnum moss in the Phototron™ liner between any two plants to give yourself a visual reference on the water puddle level inside the Phototron™ liner. This hole should be 3 inches in diameter and go right to the bottom on the liner. Make sure that you can see the actual bottom of the liner. ( NOTE: The need for this hole can be eliminated by installing the DIPSTIK from our accessory catalog. You can install the DIPSTIK now or at any time in the future. With the DIPSTIK you can quickly and accurately determine at a glance the exact status of your puddle.)

Commercial Grower Tips & Benefits -- Suntory Mecardonia

01:56
Suntory's Mecardonia is a vibrant, heat-tolerant plant that creates gorgeous golden carpets of flowers. It is highly recommended by Colorado grower Aaron McDonald of Botany Lane Greenhouse. He loves the vibrant yellow flowers contrasting against healthy green foliage. He praises this mecardonia's heat tolerance and longevity throughout the season, delivering superior garden performance. It has a low-growing habit and can be used as a groundcover, in hanging baskets and patio pots or as an accent plant in mixed containers. It is a nice addition without taking away from other plants. It plays well with others. He recommends growers produce Suntory Mecardonia in 4-inch, 6-inch pots, as well as hanging baskets to energize their summer programs. Put it where ever you want and it will perform, he says.
