Putting on a Survival Suit

03:39
Immersion suits, also called survival suits, have helped saved hundreds of lives, largely because they provide protection from hypothermia. However, the protection of a survival suit is only good if you have it on and during at-sea emergencies, you may only have seconds to do this. This video walks you through the proper techniques for donning immersion suits and entering the water. For more information, read "Beating the Odds on Northern Waters: A guide to fishing safety" , produced by the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. At the end of 2006 two Australian men were scuba diving at Pimpernell Rock, 8kms off the East Coast. Ascending to the surface the men discovered the anchor rope to their boat had snapped. Surfacing they had no other option but to dump their scuba gear and attempt to swim to shore. Amazingly one of the men, Peter Trayhurn, took photographs using his underwater camera throughout this desperate survival situation. Peter Trayhurn and Geoff Tosio were interviewed from Sydney, Australia by Anne Curry on NBC NEWS Today Show at the end of 2010 This is Peter Trayhurns story.

Exercise Bold Monarch 2011: Submarine rescue at sea

04:31
NATO submarine rescue exercise improves international cooperation for saving human lives. Cartagena, Spain - A demonstration of submarine rescue operations, in the framework of Exercise Bold Monarch 2011, took place today at the presence of Admiral Giampaolo di Paola, Chairman of NATO's Military Committee (CMC), Gen Nikolay Makarov, Chief of Joint Staff of Russian Federation Armed Forces and Admiral General Manuel Rebollo Garcia, Chief of the Spanish Navy, along with other NATO Officials. The exercise Bold Monarch is the world's largest event of this kind, bringing together every three years submarines, ships and aircraft from both NATO and non-NATO countries. The 2011 edition includes the participation of Russia, marking it as the first time a Russian submarine participates in any NATO exercise. Bold Monarch 2011 is designed to maximize international cooperation in submarine rescue operations -- a critical capability for NATO and for all the submarine-operating nations. During the 12-day exercise, submarines from Portugal, Russia, Spain and Turkey were 'bottomed' in a sea area just off the southern coast of Spain. Rescue forces equipped with a range of sophisticated debris clearance, diver-assisted gear and submarine rescue vehicles from Italy, USA, Russia and Sweden, together with a jointly-owned rescue system from France, Norway and United Kingdom engaged in a series of rescue operations for the "sunken" submarines. The exercise will conclude in the next days with a 48-hour coordinated rescue and evacuation operation for some 150 survivors, including many simulated casualties, from a 'disabled' submarine. During the visit to the ships, submarine and rescue systems, the Chairman of the Military Committee was briefed on how this exercises can greatly contribute to enhance partner interoperability, providing specific military training, coordinating military assistance, and cooperating with the chain of command of key nations. Compatibility between rescue assets, standardization of procedures, coordination and cooperation between all national elements, both military and civilian, were among the exercise's objectives shown. The exercise is proving invaluable also for testing the command and control of this kind of incidents under internationally-agreed NATO procedures. During the demonstration CMC and General Makarov were 'rescued' from the Russian submarine through a NATO rescue systems, providing a concrete example on how platforms and procedures can successfully mate. Thanking the Spanish Navy for hosting the exercise, Admiral Di Paola said that "Exercises like the Bold Monarch 2011, beside the great value of all the objectives in term of improving safety and interoperability at sea, show how much interest and enthusiasm there is, within NATO and beyond, in strengthening networks in the field of cooperation and security." General Makarov also stressed the importance of these successful exercises, in light of joint efforts to save human lives. http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/news_75040.htm NATO Homepage: http://www.nato.int

27c3: Safety on the Open Sea (en)

59:40
Speaker: Bernhard Fischer Safe navigation with the aid of an open sea chart. In maritime shipping accurate positioning is vital to preserve damage to life, ship, and goods. Today, we might tend to think that this problem is sufficiently solved yet because of the existence of electronic positioning systems like, most notably, the Global Positioning System (GPS) or the Russian counterpart GLONASS. This is wrong. Positions in terms of latitude and longitude just make sense together with an accurate sea chart (and of course, together with a navigator that is able to translate charting data into reality). Sea charts are available of national geospatial agencies and business companies as hard-copy or as digital maps and dependent on costs one might spend they are more or less accurate. In today's open world the idea of making an open sea chart is obvious. Several projects now started to apply the rules used for the OpenStreetMap, "...a free editable map of the whole world." (http://www.openstreetmap.org/), to create a free editable sea chart of the whole world and it turns out to be much more difficult because of potential serious consequences in case of charting errors. A sea chart contains a lot of vital information to a navigator. It has to be accurate, up to date, and confidential. Since we (the open sea chart community) cannot just chart every navigational important item on the world we are dependent on information that was already charted before or on third-party information. The latter could be for example measurements or GPS tracks of people that are somehow involved into maritime shipping but not necessarily into details of marine mapping. Thus, data accuracy may be questionable but still valuable. The fact that unauthenticated people are editing data in an open database is a big challenge for an open community since safety and security of life heavily depends on it. This talk covers the basic principles of sea charts and marine mapping. It emphasizes the problems of an open sea chart in general and its distinction to an open street map since requirements to ensure safety at sea are very different. Data preparation and import of other sources are discussed in detail, mainly focused on lights and depths. The lecture will connect real world shortcomings to a pedantic definite IT world for an IT-oriented audience and approaches IT security from a different angle. Accidental pollutions at sea: are you ready for a change?

03:26
Risks of accidents at sea is growing together with increasing traffic and gigantism of ships. New threats also emerge with the development of hazardous substances freight. The risk of accidental pollutions at sea is a growing concern for the whole maritime world. Accidents at sea have for too long been a taboo for the shipping industry. A new approach, technologies and services, are now gathering together through the emerging Maritime Passive Safety Association. It aims at reducing the ecological consequences of accidents at sea, by equipping ships with permanent technologies that help the crew and salvage companies to act in the best conditions. The area of improvement offered by this new approach is huge. Maritime Passive Safety is gaining strong momentum, recently at the International Maritime Organization, and shortly at the European Union. More and more support is fueling our action among the ship-owners, the freighters, the environmental ngos, experts and the media. One year after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, is the shipping industry finally ready for a change?

Disclaimer: This video may or may not depict an actual event. Even so, taking a car near or on water without an approved floatation device can be dangerous and is not recommended! If you do drive your car at sea you should carry a life jacket on board and because a collision at sea can ruin your whole day you should wear a crash helmet. Should a collision arise place the crash helmit on to fully protect your head from injury. (so the internet said both floatation & flotation are spelling for the same words)

Women Of The Maritime - 2010 Jack Tar Magazine Calendar

01:03
The calendar is a financial boost to the Jack Tar Magazine mission; We strengthen community among sailors through interactive, informative, and entertaining media, with a focus on the progressive side of modern maritime culture and it's roots in traditional seamanship. The printing of the calendar was made possible thanks to great support we have received to our Kickstarter project. (http://bit.ly/gyDPpe) There are huge gaps in how information is being shared between the maritime subcultures today. Heavy industrial offshore and Lakes operations have trade magazines that focus on new technology or environmental legislation affecting their industry. Commercial fishermen, research vessel crew, tour operators and sail training crew have few, if any, forums where they share information. Wooden boat builders, cruisers, and racers have magazines and online forums that include technical articles and product information, but scarce offerings when it comes to well written sea stories, interesting art and photography, and thoughtful reflections about life on the water today. This is where Jack Tar picks up the slack; our audience includes everyone who recognizes the great, and sometimes not-so-great aspects of the seafaring life. We educate new mariners on how to succeed in the maritime industry, while promoting the study of traditional seamanship skills. We provide venues to discuss important issues: whether it's about safety at sea, USCG compliance topics, relationships between operators and crew, or personal subjects that only a mariner might understand. We serve as an outlet for the creative and talented souls living and working on the water. We offer common ground where both fishermen and fisheries scientists may stand in support of dedicating their lives to the management of important natural resources. We are about bringing people together, and sharing our dedication to a safe, prosperous, and enjoyable future at sea. There is an excellent quote on the back cover of this year's September issue of maine. the magazine; "Seafarers, and the maritime community are the people that teach me about what it means to love thy neighbor, how to be hospitable, and how to welcome a stranger." - Rev. Dr. Nash Garabedian That is the spirit in which Jack Tar Magazine was borne, and that is the attitude with which we bring culture and information to other mariners and the world. Please help us to narrow the gaps in communication. You are helping people on different sides of the issues understand each other better. You are helping educate young people regarding their options in the industry. You are allowing a new generation of Cousteaus, Heyerdahls, Conrads and Chichesters to emerge and renew centuries of public fascination with a subculture that is too quickly forgetting seamanship survival skills and the romance of going to sea.

Turtle: The Incredible Journey hits theaters on June 24th, 2011. Cast: Miranda Richardson TURTLE: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY is the story of a little loggerhead turtle, which follows in the path of her ancestors on one of the most extraordinary journeys in the natural world. Born on a beach in Florida, she rides the Gulf Stream all the way to the frozen north and ultimately swims around the entire North Atlantic to Africa and back to the beach where she was born. But the odds are stacked against her; just one in 10,000 thousand turtles survive the journey. Along the way she faces many hazards, she loses her brothers and sisters in the Sargasso Sea, comes face to face with creatures of the deep and nearly dies at the hands of fishermen. A sunfish guides her to safety and a humpback whale shows her the way north. And when she finally reaches the frozen north, she sees the greatest celebration of life on the Earth; but she also discovers deep and powerful changes happening in the oceans - the ice is melting and sea levels are rising; it could halt the Gulf Stream, flood the turtle's birthing beaches and end a way of life. Then her calling comes, she must return home. Under a million stars, she crawls out of the sea to lay her own eggs and keep Turtle: The Incredible Journey alive. Award-winning filmmaker Nick Stringer follows the loggerhead turtle on an adventure of more than 9,000 miles guided only by instinct. Stringer and his camera crew spent two years following loggerhead turtles on their trips across the ocean, and have captured on film the remarkable life cycle of a beautiful creature that struggles to survive in an increasingly unforgiving environment. TURTLE: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY is narrated by Academy Award nominee Miranda Richardson, and will be released to theatres in both standard theatrical formats as well as 3D in selected locations.
