Safety at Sea: An Award-Winning Program (February 2012)

04:47
Following two successful Safety-At-Sea training summer partner programs, New York Sea Grant was awarded with both a Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding support and outreach by the US Coast Guard and the Northeast Sea Grant Consortium Outstanding Outreach Achievement Award. As seen in this video clip, a reception was held to honor the program in late-October 2011 at Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. During this event, workshop organizer NYSG's marine fisheries specialist Antoinette Clemetson and her partners received praise from the U.S. Coast Guard appreciation for reinstating this training for fishermen after a ten year hiatus. Captain Joseph M. Vojvodich, US Coast Guard regional commander of Sector Long Island Sound, presented New York Sea Grant with a Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding support and outreach. "I would like to commend the New York Sea Grant program for your efforts in advancing commercial fishing vessel safety through coordination of the Safety-At-Sea workshop held the past two years in Montauk, NY," said Vojvodich. "The program has significantly advanced the Coast Guard's marine safety mission and undoubtedly helped prevent tragedies within the commercial fishing vessel fleet." The workshop provides a unique experience for over 60 commercial fishermen each year to receive valuable training and undergo examinations of safety equipment in an informal environment. During each of the daylong workshops, fishermen learned how to deploy life rafts, don immersion suits, give Mayday calls as well as learn life-saving tips about fire fighting, flooding and pump operation and the use of flares and other warning systems. "The lessons learned during the hands-on training with lifesaving gear, damage control measures, and firefighting equipment will not soon be forgotten by the participants," said Vojvodich.

The 7th EP in the Collection/Detection series comes from The Doomed Bird of Providence. Released: 28th Jan 2013. www.ldwr.net With The Doomed Bird of Providence's EP the process of making the songs required a fairly radical adjustment of the supplied sounds provided for the project. The main intention was to supply a range of songs to accompany short visual pieces. For this reason the band's foray into LDWR had a twofold intention; the band were creating short soundtracks as well as incorporating and manipulating the bank of LDWR sounds across the four songs. The four songs soundtrack four films (either short films or excerpts). 1. In the Terror of the Moment (view online here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gUYcptW1-8) This piece was written to accompany the climatic scene towards the end of the 1927 film adaption of Marcus Clarke's 'For the Term of His Natural Life'. It involves a ship sinking on stormy seas and the two main characters anticipating watery graves. 2. Safety at Sea Written for part of a 20 minute 'safety at sea' documentary involved lightships, lighthouses and model boats often replacing real ones for the more dramatic scenes. It is possibly the most jolly piece of music ever released by the band. 3. Seabound Written to accompany Donna Kendrigan's 1997 animation 'Seabound'. The animation involves is a sort of high seas Brothers Quay incorporating a drunken seaman, prosthetic limbs and a captured mermaid. 4. The Wounded Platelayer (view online here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVkntEAR47Q) A piece to accompany part of what is left of Australia's first ever feature 'The Story of the Kelly Gang' (1906). Most of this film has been destroyed, the rest suffering nitrate damage which has left only distorted fragments of the Kelly Gang's capture. The Doomed Bird of Providence's debut album, Will Ever Pray, was released in 2011 to critical acclaim, followed by the single The Bell of the Jardines. 2013 will see their follow up to Will Ever Pray and a new live set up on tour across the UK. Day Of The Seafarer

05:08
IMO stands for International Maritime Organization .It is a body that helps to protect and safeguard the navy officers and others who work on high seas. Ships were originally used for trading. Even today not much has changed almost ninety percept of the world's trade is still done with the help of shipping lines. Every year billion of cargo is shifted from one country to another. This makes it a very strong factor that supports the economy of many countries. Any loss can be huge in terms of money and human life as well. Titanic disaster initiated the requirement for laws that would save live in the sea. 1912 was the year when the first international safety of life at sea SOLAS was signed. Later, it was IMO, an international body that has made a list of rules and regulations that any country involved in shipping should follow. It started in the year 1948. It originated in Geneva, it was proposed by the United Nations. It was initially called Inter-governmental maritime Consultative. In 1982 it got a new nomenclature IMO. Now we shall discuss about the role of IMO in sea trade and welfare of seafarers. The first activity that we would discuss is maritime safety. A lot of dangerous and highly inflammable substances are carried in ships. Any accident in these can cause a lot of harm to sea life and environment. Considering this in 1959, IMO came up with a list of protective measures that all vessels in sea must follow in order to ensure that any mishap can be stopped from occurring. The second very important change that IMO worked on was maritime security. Maritime terrorism and piracy are very common especially in those areas that are near to countries like Somalia and some parts of Africa. The pirates used to attack ships, ransack and even kill. It has come up with international ship and port facility code that lays down laws for any illegal activity that is happening in the sea. We are using sea for our own interest; however we should not forget the marine life that thrives in the sea. The next and the most important activity that IMO does are safeguarding the marine environment. There are lists of guidelines that are given to the ships on high sea that they need to follow regarding pollutants that they are letting out into the sea. This has reduced pollution in sea to a great extent. The organization also recognizes the fact that there are a lot of human involvements in the sea that cannot be denied. There are a lot of policies that were created in 1978 under STCW also called Standards of Training Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers. These ensure that basic hygiene and living conditions are provided to the individuals on the ship. They get good work life balance and safety. IMO has proved very useful in the safety and betterment of all those who are involved in shipping and high sea activity. I hope now you have a better understanding of role of IMO in sea trade and welfare of seafarers.

At Sea, Peter Hutton, 2007

59:12
Renowned for his exquisitely photographed land- and cityscapes, Peter Hutton's latest film is an epic story of the birth, life, and death of the modern container ship. Shot over a period of three years, At Sea opens on a hyper-modern South Korean shipyard, where supertankers loom over the workers who build them, then journeys through the swells and storms of the North Atlantic, and closes on a maritime grave in Bangladesh where ship breakers scrap the beached leviathans piece by piece under medieval conditions. Beautifully shot and keenly observed, Hutton's film showcases the environmental and human dramas that play out in the life cycle of this invisible engine of globalization and modern-day Noah's Ark. —conversationsattheedge.org/ i own nothing

Every year, far too many fishermen lose their lives at sea. But if everyone works together—families, governments, businesses, fishing organizations in all regions of Canada—we can change the safety culture to one where the major concern is to engage in safe work practices. The transcript, alternate formats and accessible version of this video are available in the video gallery on the TSB's website: http://www.bst-tsb.gc.ca/eng/medias-media/photos/index.asp.

HMAS Parramatta seizes US$5 million in illegal narcotics

00:52
The Ship's Company of HMAS Parramatta has successfully seized and destroyed more than 240 kilograms of illegal narcotics. The narcotics with an estimated street value of US $5 million, were seized during an investigative boarding of a vessel in the North Arabian Sea on Friday 3 February 2012. Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150), part of the United States led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) directed HMAS Parramatta to intercept, board, and search the suspect vessel. The search revealed over 240 kilograms of amphetamine and heroin concealed in bags of flour and rice which were subsequently destroyed. The Australian Commander of CTF 150, Commodore Jonathan Mead said, "This represents the culmination of many months of hard work, planning and international co-operation." The Commanding Officer of HMAS Parramatta, Commander Guy Blackburn, described the mission as a significant event. "This was a great day for HMAS Parramatta, the Combined Maritime Forces and the Australian Forces in the Middle East Area of Operations," Commander Blackburn said. HMAS Parramatta's focus is to enforce maritime security in the Middle East Area of Operations as part of the multi-national Combined Maritime Task Force. When called upon, CMF also responds to Safety of Life at Sea and humanitarian crises. CMF includes participation and contributions from 25 counties. HMAS Parramatta is deployed on Operation SLIPPER and is the 27th rotation by a Royal Australian Navy ship to the region since 2001. Related Imagery

Marine police urge boat safety-

02:50
A deadly collision on the waters off the coast of Soufriere which took the life of one seafarer has prompted calls for greater safety awareness among boat operators and owners. The Marine Unit of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force says while resources for educational instruction are available, mariners do not avail themselves of these opportunities. They say it is important seafarers comply with the rules and regulations for operating at sea and in the water lanes close to the mainland.
