Texas white yucca blooming "up close"

00:31
Texas white yucca blooming "up close" Yucca Info From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae.[2] Its 40-50 species are notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal panicles of white or whitish flowers. They are native to the hot and dry (arid) parts of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Early reports of the species were confused with the cassava (Manihot esculenta).[3] Consequently, Linnaeus mistakenly derived the generic name from the Taino word for the latter, yuca (spelt with a single "c").[4] It is also colloquially known in the Midwest United States as "ghosts in the graveyard", as it is commonly found growing in rural graveyards and when in bloom the cluster of (usually pale) flowers on a thin stalk appear as floating apparitions. Distribution The natural distribution range of the genus Yucca (49 species and 24 subspecies) covers a vast area of North and Central America. From Baja California in the west, northwards into the southwestern United States, through the drier central states as far north as Alberta in Canada (Yucca glauca ssp. albertana). Yucca is also native to the lowlands and dry beach scrub of the Gulf and South Atlantic states from coastal Texas to easternmost Virginia. To the south, the genus is represented throughout Mexico and extends into Guatemala (Yucca guatemalensis). Yuccas have adapted to an equally vast range of climatic and ecological conditions. They are to be found in rocky deserts and badlands, in prairies and grassland, in mountainous regions, in light woodland, in coastal sands (Yucca filamentosa), and even in subtropical and semitemperate zones, although these are generally arid to semiarid. Ecology Yuccas have a very specialized, mutualistic pollination system, being pollinated by yucca moths (family Prodoxidae); the insect purposefully transfers the pollen from the stamens of one plant to the stigma of another, and at the same time lays an egg in the flower; the moth larva then feeds on some of the developing seeds, always leaving enough seed to perpetuate the species. Yucca species are the host plants for the caterpillars of the yucca giant-skipper (Megathymus yuccae),[5] ursine giant-skipper (Megathymus ursus),[6] and Strecker's giant-skipper (Megathymus streckeri). Uses Yuccas are widely grown as ornamental plants in gardens. Many species also bear edible parts, including fruits, seeds, flowers, flowering stems,[8] and more rarely roots. References to yucca root as food often stem from confusion with the similarly pronounced, but botanically unrelated, yuca, also called cassava (Manihot esculenta). Roots of soaptree yucca (Yucca elata) are high in saponins and are used as a shampoo in Native American rituals. Dried yucca leaves and trunk fibers have a low ignition temperature, making the plant desirable for use in starting fires via friction.[9] In rural Appalachian areas, species such as Yucca filamentosa are referred to as "meat hangers". The tough, fibrous leaves with their sharp-spined tips were used to puncture meat and knotted to form a loop with which to hang meat for salt curing or in smoke houses. Cultivation Yuccas are widely grown as architectural plants providing a dramatic accent to landscape design. They tolerate a range of conditions, but are best grown in full sun in subtropical or mild temperate areas. In gardening centres and horticultural catalogues they are usually grouped with other architectural plants such as cordylines and phormiums.[10] Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) are protected by law in some states. A permit is needed for wild collection. As a landscape plant, they can be killed by excessive water during their summer dormant phase, so are avoided by landscape contractors. Several species of yucca can be grown outdoors in mild temperate climates where they are protected from frost. These include Y. filamentosa Y. flaccida Y. gloriosa Y. recurvifolia Symbolism The "yucca flower" is the state flower of New Mexico. No species name is given in the citation. Species As of February 2012, the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families recognizes 49 species of Yucca and a number of hybrids: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucca http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Yukka_filamentosa.jpg Thanks for watching, Please rate, Subscribe, and comment. Step 4: Obtain Good Seed, Plants, Equipment, and Supplies Try plant locally-adapted varieties from seed catalogues or nurseries. You can choose between transplants or seeds when planting in the garden. Make sure that all your tools and equipment are clean before working the soil, and make sure to study pest control recommendations to see if you really need to use pesticides near your plants. These tutorial videos are based off the "Ten Steps to a Successful Vegetable Garden" publication (http://cals.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/az1435.pdf). By viewing these videos, you will learn how to garden in the low desert, whether you are a gardening novice or veteran gardener who may have recently moved to Maricopa County.

Fractal Water Vortex Magnetic Time Lapse Comparison: Vortex Magnetic Water Vs. Regular Water

02:31
http://www.fractalwater.com/catalog/super-imploder/ 2 Sunflower seeds of near equal size in 2 separate seedling pots. Seed to the left watered with water passed through the Vortex Magnetic System, seed to the right watered with regular water. Placed for 28 Days under 10 Litro Glow Fluorescent Lamps on an 18 Hr. Per Day Light Cycle. The Vortex Magnetic System watered seed germinated 1 day earlier than the regular water. Though visually slightly smaller, the Super Imploder watered plant has more than double the root size! So much in fact that the plant developed root wrap, where roots are too large for the pot it is in, resulting in stunted growth. The Vortex Magnetic plant weight is .10 of a gram larger than regular watered plant. The Explosion in growth occurring at the roots results in faster transplantation time. What would typically take 14 days, can be achieved at 10 days. Saving time and extending growing capabilities. http://www.fractalwater.com

Colourful Gulmohar tree

00:35
Discovered in the early 19th century in its native Madagascar by botanist Wensel Bojer, Gulmohar is a flamboyant tree in flower - some say the world's most colorful tree. For several weeks in spring and summer it is covered with exuberant clusters of flame-red flowers, 4-5 in across. Even up close the individual flowers are striking: they have four spoon shaped spreading scarlet or orange-red petals about 3 in long, and one upright slightly larger petal (the standard) which is marked with yellow and white. The delicate, fern-like leaves are composed of small individual leaflets, which fold up at the onset of dusk. Gulmohar gets 30-40 ft tall, but its elegant wide-spreading umbrella-like canopy can be wider than its height. Gumohar is naturalized in India and is widely cultivated as a street tree. source - http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Gulmohar.html This footage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of HD imagery from South Asia. Permaculture Series - Permaculture Zone 4

03:17
Visit http://www.jandjacres.net for more hobby farm activities. Zone 4 is our buffer between our cultivated land and the natural wilderness we will find beyond it. However, there might be a reason to cultivate just a little in zone 4. In this zone we let nature do the vast majority of the work. We still harvest things we need from this zone, but we are not going to plant our own crops. Instead, we will make use of what nature provides. Sustainable Farming: Livestock Pasture Our livestock area in this part of our property should not need any of our attention for upkeep. This lets us practice sustainable farming -- letting the livestock forage off of the natural environment. Yes, you may need to maintain a fence, or rotate your livestock, but you should not need to mow or lay down new pasture grass to keep the area viable for livestock Sustainable Farming: Wild Edibles About the last thing I want to attempt to do is to catalog all of the wild edibles around the world. I will have to leave that in your hands. In our area there are hosts of plants that grow in the wild that are perfectly edible. Muscadines come to mind, along with Jerusalem Artichokes. Some plants that many people categorize as weeds are edible as well, such as Dandelions and Clovers. While vegetation gets a lot of attention, we should not forget about the animals that are a part of our food chain as well. In our area, Crayfish (known as Crawdad's) grow well, and are a great sustainable food resource. Nuisance animals, such as raccoon, are also edible. Sustainable Farming: Fire Wood It is possible to do the math and try and calculate how many cords of wood you need to heat your home through the winter, and then to calculate how much wood you can expect to get from a particular sized tree. However, that is not the point of this post. While we will take our fire wood from zone 4, we need to be sure we do it in a sustainable way. We need to be sure we do not run out. Nature need to be able to regrow. In our area, we do not feel the naturally growing varieties on our small farm will be enough to sustain us. Because we feel there is a deficiency, we have looked into other options. We believe if we cultivate a forest of hybrid poplars we will receive enough wood for our winter comfort, and also have enough time between harvests for the trees to regrow. Nothing will go to waste, what is not used in the fireplace will be mulched for our gardens and other areas.

Young's Garden Succulent Plants

03:25
At Young's Garden we love succulents. Any kind. Sempervivum. Echeveria. Sedums. We have been collecting for years and years, but only keep the best, most colorful and unique varieties. http://www.youngs-garden.com/succulents/ Check out our collection available for sale at youngs-garden.com. Here's what one of our customer's said about ordering from us, "I received my order today. These, without a doubt, were the best plants I have ever received from an online nursery. The plants were large, healthy and full of color. For years I have tried to buy online from people like Michigan Bulb, Spring Hill, Gurneys and many others. I receive dead and dying plant, smaller than expected and nothing like the catalog pictures. I had long written off these kinds of nurseries as a waste of money. Your shipment was an amazing surprise! The plants are exactly what I wanted, bigger than expected and super healthy."

Cooking: Allium Veggie Scrambled Eggs. Healthy Meal Idea

06:18
Cooking: Veggie Scrambled Eggs The family of onion-ey plants is called Alliaceae. or alliums. Some alliums have showy flowers, and those appear in catalogs of flowering. Onions, leeks, garlic, shallots, scallions, chives: all are Alliaceae Members of the allium family are easy to recognize. They share the same basic "body type": thin grasslike leaves that all emerge from one point on a thickened stem or bulb, and fleshy roots emerging from a small area on the bottom of the plant. From beefy leeks, down to delicate chives. Garlic, onions, leeks and chives contain flavonoids that stimulate the production of glutathione (the tripeptide that is the liver's most potent antioxidant). Glutathione enhances elimination of toxins and carcinogens, putting the allium family of vegetables at the top of the list for foods that can help prevent cancer. Here are just a few benefits from members of this family. Lowers total cholesterol (but raises HDL—"good"—cholesterol) Lessens the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) Lowers blood pressure Reduces the risk of blood clots (cause of the majority of strokes and heart attacks) Destroys infection-causing viruses and bacteria Reduces the risk of certain cancers, in particular, stomach cancers Produces more "natural killer" cells in the blood to fight tumors and infections Helps fight against neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's Enhances detoxification by reducing toxins Music Credit: There's A Better WAY by Loveshadow perfect eggs, scrambled eggs, veggie scrambled eggs, green eggs, health egg recipes, scrambled eggs with veggies, scrambled eggs recipe, scrambled eggs with onions, scrambled eggs with leeks, fluffy eggs, how to fry eggs, how to cook eggs, how to scramble gees, how to make scrambled eggs, Allium vegetables, healthy lunch recipes, healthy breakfast recipes, healthy dinner recipes, healthy meal ideas, optimunhealthcafe, optimum health cafe, low cholesterol meals, low cholesterol recipes, low fat recipes, cooking with coconut oil, low carb diet, low carb recipes, healthy recipes, healthy eating, healthy cooking, healthy breakfast
