Welcome to the third in a 7-part series about different products provided by elephant garlic. This video focuses on elephant garlic flowers. After this video, I hope that you will consider elephant garlic as an inexpensive way to have a dramatic impact in your flower gardens. Have you seen the gigantic allium in the fall bulb catalogs? They always look so nice, but are so dadgum expensive! Here are 2 examples. Look at Mt. Everest, a very pretty, white gigantic allium. It has 4-inch flowerheads, grown 3 feet tall, and you can buy them for 3 for $17.95. I have seen them online for $11.99 each! Then there's the Allium Ambassador, a beautiful purple gigantic allium. It has 6-inch flowerheads, grows 3-4 feet tall, and you can get 3 for $29.95 and that's without shipping! Elephant garlic are gigantic alliums, too. They are not like regular garlic that has little bulblets in their flowers. No! Elephant garlic has big beautiful flowers that transition into big seedheads that last a long time and provide some real interest in a flower garden even into winter. How big are elephant garlic flowers? Well, I went out and measured a few of the dried flowerheads of elephant garlic that were growing untended, without any help, here at Haphazard Homestead. Here are some elephant garlic flowerheads going to seed that are 4-5 inches across, and are easily 5 feet tall. Here's another elephant garlic flowerstalk that's almost 6 feet tall. And here's a flowerhead that was easily 5 inches across. Elephant garlic flowers and their seedheads make great cut flowers to use in an arrangement, fresh or dried. Let's take a look at a couple other attributes of elephant garlic flowers. Bees love them! You can eat the flowers, too. I think they have the hottest, most intense flavor of all the parts of the elephant garlic, so I don't use a lot of them at any one time. Did I tell you that bees love these flowers? Bees love the elephant garlic flowers! When elephant garlic flowers like this, the bulbs down below don't get very big. You can see my video on elephant garlic scapes for more about that. So how can you have your cake and eat it, too -- or in this case, how can you have elephant garlic flowers and harvest more to eat? Here's my suggestion: Each elephant garlic that is left in the ground will divide into a clump the next year, that will flower, too. You can dig up some of the clumps and use them as spring leeks. You can check an earlier video in this elephant garlic series for more about that. Well, I hope I have convinced you that elephant garlic can provide some beautiful flowers that are worth as much as the expensive gigantic alliums that you see in the fall bulb catalogs. Vanilla is, in truth, a mystical Mexican orchid that is so difficult to cultivate it's surprising anyone knows what it tastes like. Luckily for us, and for vanilla plants, the flavor is so good that much of the last 500 years have been dedicated to propagating and developing this tasty plant. Vanilla is native to Mexico, where Aztecs, Totonacs, and Mayans enjoyed and traded it for many centuries before the arrival of Cortes and his conquistadores in the 16th century. After the conquering Spanish first tasted vanilla, they brought the beans back to Europe, where royals, bakers, and perfume makers soon asked for more of this magical flowering tasting machine. As they did with many foods, Europeans increased their access to vanilla through a mutually reinforcing combination of science, conquest, and forced labor. It was a young slave working in the French colony of Réunion, the twelve year old Edmond Albius, who realized that the vanilla plant could be pollinated, but only by hand, while around the same time, a Belgian scientist named Charles Morren discovered a solitary species of bee native to Mexico that pollinated the Mexican vanilla plants in a similar way to Edmond's method. This hand-pollination technique is still used today, in a process that is labor-intensive. It precipitated a massive rise in vanilla production almost immediately, which allowed for chefs around Europe to start experimenting with new uses for vanilla (hello, ice cream, pastries, and candies!). This only increased demand for this expensive plant that only flowers for one day. It wasn't until the late 19th Century that scientists started extracting vanilla, and later deriving vanillin, the aroma that gives vanilla its distinctively sweet smell, from cheaper sources like wood pulp and clove oil. Overcoming a far-too-small supply of the vanilla plant traded in a tightly controlled market, these innovations have helped to make vanilla the most ubiquitous flavor in the world: it's in our spa ventilation systems, our hand soaps, and most importantly, our favorite foods. We would like to present a new way of lovely Rosy Adenium grafting on beautiful “Chubby” body or caudex as root stock. The best beautiful Adenium in term of caudex forms is Adenium “Arabicum” but its flowers are just native pink color. As we know, most colorful flowers come from Adenium “Obesum” hybrid but its body is not beautiful enough comparing to Adenium Arabicum. That’s why we would like to create new Adenium with both perfect body forms and beautiful flower colors on the same plant. Most growers don’t like to graft obesum flowers on Arabicum root stock because it’s pretty hard to do. The reason is that the scions or obesum branches will try to jump out of root stock arabicum branch after finish grafting. Another reason is that branch surface from root stock is harder than scions soft skin from obesum. Now we’ve discovered and found the new grafting technique to help making both different hybrid branches get grafting better, much smoother and it was success. We also found that obesum flowers can give higher blooming, perfect flower forms and bigger flower size after grafting them on these Arabicum root stocks. I think the reason is that Arabicum can give better and higher food feed to flowers than obesum itself because caudex is stronger and bigger branches. Many people ask for “Fancy” or “Multi-Colors” grafting on the same plant. This Arabicum can answer this because it comes up with muscular branches and mostly 5-7 branches on too. That means you can choose your own flowers from our catalogs (2015 varieties and Hall of fame) to let us do grafting. - See more at: http://www.siamadenium.com/seedlings/new-arabicum-chubby-rosy-adenium.html#sthash.8wh3j0vu.dpuf

Tens of thousands of flowers, bursting with colors and rich in family history, are grown with a purpose but aren't for sale. ************************************************************ Want even more heartwarming stories?! Subscribe to Humankind's YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/1IrNzUN Like Humankind on Facebook: http://bit.ly/fbhkvids ************************************************************ Boyd Huppert, KARE - ROCHESTER, Minn. – For Barb Meyer, the only thing prettier than a field of gladiolus is watching them disappear down a hospital hallway. Each summer Barb and her husband John distribute hundreds of gladiolus bouquets they cut from a four-and-a-half acre plot surrounded by corn and soybeans on their farm near Elgin, Minnesota. The majority of the glads are delivered by the Meyers to St. Mary's Hospital at the Mayo Clinic and other patient facilities in and around Rochester. "Just the smiles make me want to smile," Barb says. "It's just very precious to see the people's reactions." John Meyer began growing glads after a daughter presented him with a few bulbs as a birthday gift. One thing lead to another and soon his garden had grown to 10,000 gladiolus plants, "then the next year we'd have 20,000. Pretty soon we quit talking about thousands and talking about acres," John says. Today John hybridizes hundreds of glad varieties, nearly two dozen of which have made their way into catalogs for sale to the public. The couple has won scores of awards at gladiolus shows. But the Meyers' greatest joy is the free deliveries they make from their pickup truck several times a week. Steve Wilson of Brooklyn Center picked up a bouquet for his wife, who has spent the past two weeks at St. Mary's Hospital with spinal problems. "This is her favorite flower and she loves to garden," he says. Kim Prelip of Mason City, Iowa and her son Conner picked up a bouquet for Conner's grandpa. "Grandpa was in a bad motorcycle accident and we're here to visit him, so hopefully it will brighten his day," Kim says. The Meyers deliver several dozen bouquets to St. Mary's three or four times a week when their glads are blooming. "The Lord's blessed us so we like to share our blessings," John says. This is a basic way to plant peas as transplants into 5 gallon containers. It is important to take care with the roots. You can put 4-8 pea plants into a container. Don't forget to put a drainage hole in the container and to harden-off your transplants. They have to get acclimated to the sun or the leaves will actually get damaged. This is a specific method I use for spraying to control fungus gnats. The technique is important as you have to include spraying under the cells. Always TEST SPRAY and wait 48 hours before using a new spray on your plants. Neem oil is effective at managing fungus gnats and many fungi. Nothing is 100% effective but I really like neem oil and it has worked for me. Check out my vegetable gardening blog: The Rusted Garden. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saussurea_obvallata http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Brahma%20Kamal.html The Brahma Kamal, the much reverred flower of the Himalayas, is an excellent example of plant life at the upper limit of high mountains (3,000-4,600 m). The flowerheads are actually purple, but are enclosed in layers of greenish-yellow, papery, boat-shaped bracts. The flowers bloom at the height of the monsoons and abundant in high-altitude places like The Valley of Flowers. The bract-cover provides the warm space needed to bloom in the cold mountains. The flowers are used as offering in the hill temples, like the shrines of Badrinath. The thick curved root of the plant is applied to bruises and cuts, as part of local medicine. Brahma Kamal is the state flower of Uttarakhand. A postal stamp was issued by the Indian Postal Department to commemorate this flower. http://medplants.blogspot.in/2012/08/saussurea-obvallata-brahma-kamal-sacred.html http://www.boldsky.com/yoga-spirituality/faith-mysticism/2012/brahma-kamal-flower-gods-030103.html http://nlamindia.blogspot.in/2014/07/brahmakamla-rare-legendary-mythical.html S.obovallata is useful medicine to treat fevers. The entire plant is crushed and juice is given in dose of 50ml 2 times a day Due to its bitter nature it is an excellent liver tonic and great appetiser. It clears recurrent urinary tract infections and an excellent medicine for sexually transmitted diseases. I saw a show about gourmet growth of seeds in the dark. I decided to give it a try. It is very possible to grow large size sprouts in complete darkness. I also grew pea sprouts to nearly 12 inches. I show you the difference between peas grown with organic fertilizer verses synthetic only, in complete darkness. And go over what my experiment taught me as you might use it to improve growing vegetables in completed darkness. They tasted great in the salad! But it is just an experiment to learn. Basically just go and get them! I use Snapdrgaons and Chives as examples for collecting flower and herb seeds. It is easy to do and it saves money. Simply collect the dried flower heads. Save the seeds in envelopes or small containers and they can last for years. Just keep them in call dark place. Fall is a great time for seed collecting. You can use them next spring as I will, in my seed starting trays. Check out my vegetable gardening blog: The Rusted Garden.
