Data-Driven Product Innovation
Authors: Xin Fu, Hernan Asorey Abstract: Data Science is an increasingly popular area of Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining. Leading consumer Web companies such as Amazon, Facebook, eBay, Google and LinkedIn, as well as B2B companies like Salesforce, possess Petabytes of data. Through effective mining of this data, they create products and services that benefit millions of users and generate tremendous amount of business value. It is widely acknowledged that Data Scientists play key roles in the creation of these products, from pattern identification, idea generation and product prototyping to experiment design and launch decisions. Nonetheless, they also face common challenges, such as the gap between creating a prototype and turning it into a scalable product, or the frustration of generating innovative product ideas that do not get adopted. Organizers of this tutorial have many years of experience leading Data Science teams in some of the most successful consumer Web companies. In this tutorial, we introduce the framework that we created to nurture data-driven product innovations. The core of this framework is the focus on scale and impact - we take the audience through a discussion on how to balance between velocity and scale, between product innovation and product operation, and between theoretical research and practical impact. We also share some guidelines for successful data-driven product innovation with real examples from our experiences. We end the tutorial by discussing the organizational perspective of data-driven product innovation: how to structure Data Science teams so Data Scientists collaborate effectively with other functions, and how to hire and grow talents into Data Scientist roles. Amazing Eco-Friendly Technology That Will Change The World
Top 10 environmentally friendly "Green" innovations and inventions that will help our planet earth create less pollution. Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg Description: With a World population of over seven billion people, a reliance on limited non-renewable resources and an environment which is getting more polluted each year, being environmentally or eco-friendly is becoming increasingly important. Every day we are bombarded with messages about air and water pollution. We are constantly reminded about our carbon footprint and the fact that global warming is slowly altering the environment we live in. From movies to politics, our relationship with the environment is a topic which is gaining importance with each passing year. Our response to this issue started slowly, but has accelerated dramatically over the past few years. If we don’t adjust our lifestyle and become more eco-friendly then we may end up destroying the very environment we live in. The environmental challenges we face aren’t new. For the last few decades we have incorporated more eco-friendly technologies and practices into our lifestyles as a way of using less energy and creating a smaller carbon footprint. Appliances are more energy efficient, cars produce fewer emissions, more households recycle their waste instead of sending it to the landfill – these are just a few of the many technologies and practices that have helped make us more eco-friendly. It doesn’t stop there, however. People around the world are constantly developing and promoting an array of goods and services meant to aid us in our everyday lives while also helping us to live in harmony with our environment. In the past, being eco-friendly was equated with changing one’s lifestyle in a dramatic fashion. You gave up your car for a bike, took your household off the power grid and relied on the ‘outside’ world as little as possible for your daily needs. Times have indeed changed a lot. Today, eco-friendly lifestyles are encouraged and those trying to have a positive impact on the environment are encouraged to be involved with the larger community. Solar panels can help you create your own electricity, but the surplus ‘clean’ energy they produce can be put back into the power grid for other people to use. Hybrid and electric cars no longer mean the automobile is an enemy of the environment and a range of eco-friendly products mean our consumer culture is on a greener path. This video contains examples of eco-friendly technologies which will change the world we live in. For the most part these innovations are the result of years or decades of development and improvements to existing technologies. The result are products which are now efficient and affordable enough to be used on a larger scale than previously possible. On the one hand, as you’ll see, some of these innovations will directly affect our personal lives on a daily basis by impacting such things as energy efficiency and health. Alternatively, there are technologies which focus on powering towns and cities, feeding the world’s population and reducing potentially toxic landfill waste. What these technologies all have in common is that they are eco-friendly and benefit both humans and the environment we rely so much on. Innovation Videos [ALL-IN-FIT]
Innovation management is the management of innovation processes. It refers both to product and organizational innovation. Innovation management includes a set of tools that allow managers and engineers to cooperate with a common understanding of processes and goals. Innovation management allows the organization to respond to external or internal opportunities, and use its creativity to introduce new ideas, processes or products.[1] It is not relegated to R&D; it involves workers at every level in contributing creatively to a company's product development, manufacturing and marketing. By utilizing innovation management tools, management can trigger and deploy the creative capabilities of the work force for the continuous development of a company.[2] Common tools include brainstorming, virtual prototyping, product lifecycle management, idea management, TRIZ, Phase–gate model, project management, product line planning and portfolio management. The process can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization, technology and market by iterating series of activities: search, select, implement and capture.[3] Innovation processes can either be pushed or pulled through development. A pushed process is based on existing or newly invented technology, that the organization has access to, and tries to find profitable applications for. A pulled process is based on finding areas where customers needs are not met, and then find solutions to those needs.[4] To succeed with either method, an understanding of both the market and the technical problems are needed. By creating multi-functional development teams, containing both engineers and marketers, both dimensions can be solved.[5] The product lifecycle of products is getting shorter because of increased competition. This forces companies to reduce the time to market. Innovation managers must therefore decrease development time, without sacrificing quality or meeting the needs of the market.[4] An application program (app or application for short) is a computer program designed to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities for the benefit of the user. Examples of an application include a word processor, a spreadsheet, an accounting application, a web browser, a media player, an aeronautical flight simulator, a console game or a photo editor. The collective noun application software refers to all applications collectively.[1] This contrasts with system software, which is mainly involved with running the computer. Applications may be bundled with the computer and its system software or published separately, and may be coded as proprietary, open-source or university projects.[2] Android is a mobile operating system (OS) currently developed by Google, based on the Linux kernel and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Android's user interface is mainly based on direct manipulation, using touch gestures that loosely correspond to real-world actions, such as swiping, tapping and pinching, to manipulate on-screen objects, along with a virtual keyboard for text input. In addition to touchscreen devices, Google has further developed Android TV for televisions, Android Auto for cars, and Android Wear for wrist watches, each with a specialized user interface. Variants of Android are also used on notebooks, game consoles, digital cameras, and other electronics. As of 2015, Android has the largest installed base of all operating systems.[11] The success of Android has made it a target for patent litigation as part of the so-called "smartphone wars" between technology companies.[22][23] Physical exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. It is performed for various reasons, including strengthening muscles and the cardiovascular system, honing athletic skills, weight loss or maintenance, and merely enjoyment. Frequent and regular physical exercise boosts the immune system and helps prevent the "diseases of affluence" such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity.[1][2] It may also help prevent depression, help to promote or maintain positive self-esteem, improve mental health generally, and can augment an individual's sex appeal or body image, which has been found to be linked with higher levels of self-esteem.[3] Childhood obesity is a growing global concern,[4] and physical exercise may help decrease some of the effects of childhood and adult obesity. Health care providers often call exercise the "miracle" or "wonder" drug—alluding to the wide variety of proven benefits that it can provide.[5][6] In the United Kingdom two to four hours of light activity are recommended during working hours.[7] This includes walking and standing.[

Innovation Factory
The Innovation Factory is an experimental tool for managing innovation with a distributed team, fostering efficiency, creativity and fast convergence. In today’s connected and global market, innovation is a key success factor. Enterprises need tools that support the innovation process. Looking for new ideas, new resources and new points of view is the basis of progress. This attitude is not an option, it is essential for survival! Traditionally, innovation process was restricted, and existed within the boundaries of a research and development department. Recently companies understood the impact that clients and external sources may have on defining the requirements for the evolution of a new product. Today, Innovation is managed increasely by temporary teams that are created around a specific project and integrate disparate expertise. These teams must be instantiated and become operational at very short notice. They need the right technological support. The Innovation Factory provides an integrated suite of innovative utilities that can make your team productive in a few hours. The Innovation Factory is a Social environment where people meet. Interaction is supported by the Factory’s communication tools, as it would be in social networks. Each user is a small part of a larger scenario. A synchronous editor allows users to work together in the same document. Everyone can make his or her own personal contribution to the achievement of a common goal Innovation must not be the result merely of effort, but the natural result of a new way of working. A system of collaborative tagging is the key in the development of a Social Environment. Each resource must be accessible in a simple and direct way. In the Innovation Factory, the tagging of each resource is a process invisible to users that supports what they have always done. Just working together. An integrated recommender system supports users in their activities suggesting documents, links, resources and people related to a specific context. This is the real engine that accelerates innovation. Innovation Factory is a complex system with comprehensive infrastructure but it is simple to use Finally a monitoring system keeps track of interactions between users in order to understand the evolution of the ecosystem and improve a better way to work through the Innovation Factory. In this project we presented Innovation Factory, an experimental tool for managing innovation within enterprises. Disruptive technology example: Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP, business phone service
VoIP=voice over internet. Disruptive technology/innovation=new, ground-breaking product/service on a large scale. Examples of disruptive innovations are the personal computer, the laptop, mobile phones, emails, online courses and massive open online courses, MOOC. They all interfered with a product/service so that something new became accessible, through a disruptive process. Sometimes you will experience disruptive technologies or innovations, and VoIP has been such an experience for me and for many others. VoIP was really introduced during the 1990s and available to the masses in the first decade of the 21th century, at least where I live in Sweden. In 2014, when my employer decided to change the business phone solution, and it was time to toss out my old work phone, I decided to capture the moment, as a memento of an era gone by. The old way of communicating via telephone was known as the public switched telephone network, PSTN, also called plain old telephone service, POTS. The calls were switched back and forth between electrical circuits, and, in a sense, there was always a nonstop, physical electronic connection between the caller and the person that answered the telephone call. You can picture it as an uninterrupted copper wire, with signals going back and forth in a continuous flow. The difference is that internet telephony, from a technical point of view, is not a continuous electronic connection and signals are not sent and received in a continuous flow. Rather they, our voices, are cut into pieces of digital data and are sent as packets over the internet. A business firm, a university, or any other organisation can run its telephone system over their standard internet connection, even a simple broadband connection. In our daily lives, we use internet broadband for e-mail and for web surfing. VoIP is just another service running over the internet broadband. There are many benefits of VoIP. There are usually no costs for calls between two VoIP phones, which makes long distance calls less of a budget burden. It is easy to move a VoIP phone to another room or a new geographical location. Simply unplug and move it, as long as you have access to the internet. With the old technology, you had to pay extra for moving or adding a phone, if it was at all possible to do it. VoIP calls can also be made in different ways, which makes it even more flexible. You can keep and use your old, traditional phone, together with adapters to hook into the internet and the VoIP systems. Or you can use special VoIP-phones that are made for using the VoIP systems. You can use software on an ordinary computer, to make your calls via your PC or Mac. You can even have a VoIP app on you mobile phone. You are not limited by the number of copper wires that run into your business office. You just need one internet connection and you are only limited by its capacity, i.e. the bandwidth. You do not need to pay for and install a new copper wire each time you add a phone to your office, as long as your internet connection can handle the calls. Another benefit is the fact that VoIP is fully compatible with how the internet is set up and operates, and this is great for business phone systems. VoIP works with existing applications such as e-mail, web surfing and customer databases. Your VoIP server can take messages, and you can also send instant messages via your VoIP server. This is the big benefit of VoIP: telephones and computers used to be more or less separated, but they now live in the same world, and it results in tons of benefits for firms, authorities, organisations and individuals. In my example, the hardware is my computer and my headphones, and the software is Microsofts Lync, which is a fairly common programme for business phone solutions. It is not the only way of using IP telephony, but this type of softphone is the business solution that my employer has chosen at the moment. A softphone is software that you install on your PC or Mac to enable your computer to act as a telephone. Suggested reading Clayton Christensen’s book and his web site. Innovation in India: Learning in the school without walls (Learning World: S5E30, 1/2)
Syamantak’s "University of Life" is a very special centre of learning, situated in Maharashtra, India. Its students work together on solving everyday problems by taking on a practical approach and by finding innovative solutions. Some work on marketing local food products, while others work in agriculture, eco-construction and engineering. The origin of this approach roots in the belief that members of a community should not have to migrate to other places in order to find work. Instead, children should be equipped with the wisdom and knowledge of creating self-employment in order to stay in their home villages. The students benefit from this alternative 'learning by doing' method: rather than being bound to a fixed curriculum, it gives them the space to become creative and innovative.
