No—not the one from Visa or American Express. This one is much more valuable. There are entire organizations that have been built upon it. And individuals that have used it to acquire both wealth and influence. If this sounds like something you might wish to own, you should know that there is only one way you can get your hands on it: you have to be born with black skin. That’s the only requirement. Really. You can be poor, middle class, or rich—it doesn't matter. The black card will still confer upon you an entire history of oppression, even if you’ve never been oppressed. Flash the black card, and most white people will cower. Play the black card expertly, and you can win awards, make millions—all the while claiming that the people who got you there somehow hate you. With a black card, you can sell books full of indecipherable prose. Because with a card that powerful, who cares if your words make any sense? You can call yourself a “civil rights leader” and shake down multinational corporations, or you can torch your own neighborhood because you didn’t like the outcome of a grand jury verdict. Ironically, the people you might think have the most legitimate claim to the black card refuse to use it. Take my grandfather, for instance: He raised me from the time I was 9 years old. Born in 1941 in rural North Carolina, he started working at age five, laying out tobacco to dry on a sharecropping farm. Jim Crow, separate drinking fountains, and the KKK were ever-present realities. He was 17 when he married my grandmother. He made a living cleaning homes and office buildings until he saved up enough money to open his own cleaning business. The thing is, he never played any card. Nor did my grandmother. If they had problems, they didn’t blame anybody. They just fixed them. And they raised me to do the same. Chores were a requirement in their household. So was reading the Bible every morning before school. I didn’t like the Bible readings, and I hated the chores. But I realize now that these small acts of discipline, although sometimes stifling, had a strong, positive impact on my character. I was a first-generation college student. This was supposed to be the ticket to prosperity. But it wasn’t. I left college with a mountain of debt and no practical skills. I had just $80 dollars in my bank account and very few prospects. I could have given up. I could have dug deep into my history and declared myself a natural product of ancestral oppression. I could have played the black card and absolved myself of all responsibility for my own stupid decisions. Except, I didn’t. Because it would have destroyed my grandfather’s legacy. I am proud that he had the fortitude to turn nothing into something; and I have no intention of reversing that something back into a nothing. My attitude comes with a price, however. Because if you are born black and you don’t accept your natural status as a victim, then the validity of your blackness is immediately called into question. Well, so be it. Captured On Saturday 13 ‎January ‎2018, ‏‎At 03:17:49 (PM) Makeover of Kanpur - New Delhi Shatabdi Express under Project “Swarna” Improved interiors & exterior, vinyl wrap in door way and toilets, high end toilets fittings, GPS based display boards are part of many other upgradations done to provide passengers a mesmerising experience. ABOUT THE TRAIN ------------------------------- The Kanpur - New Delhi Shatabdi Express is the Second Shatabdi Train for Kanpur Central. The load of passengers in Lucknow Swarna Shatabdi Express was heavy from Kanpur Central. Due to the excessive passenger load on Lucknow Shatabdi from Kanpur Central and huge demand for a separate Shatabdi train from Kanpur Central, the Railway Ministry declared the new Shatabdi train from Central Station in 2009 Railway Budget. This train was flagged off by Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee on 7 Feb 2010. It runs on all days of a week except Sunday. In the starting days, it used to run Nonstop between Kanpur and New Delhi. Later, Ghaziabad and Etawah were added as intermediate stops and from 9 July 2016. Aligarh was also added. It is called Kanpur Reverse Shatabdi because it follows the reverse timetable of Lucknow Shatabdi i.e. UP follows DOWN time table and vice versa. Some Noteworthy Changes that have been made on the Shatabdi Express under Operation ‘Swarna’ Are :- 1). Interiors with Vinyl Graffiti-Proof Wrappings in the Doorways, Gangways and Luggage Rack Panels. 2). Compartment aisle marked with Fluorescent Strips. Attendant Calling facility and Reading lights. 3). New Anti-abrasion permanent coating for polished look of flooring. 4). ‘Magic Box’ infotainment system: Enjoy HD streaming of movies, cartoon movies, Mann Ki Baat and e-magazines through Wifi hotspot on your smartphones, tablets and laptops! 5). An anti-graffiti vinyl coating on the exterior. 6). Toilets have been upgraded with dustbins, odour control system and a scrapper matting to avoid dirty water from spilling over to the main train area. As mentioned above, the toilets boast of a central locking system and will also be cleaned every two hours, with passengers being asked by staff to check after every cleaning. 7). The coaches boast of automatic odour and hygiene control systems. The Executive class coaches will come equipped with disposable head-rest covers. 8). All coaches have integrated braille signages for the convenience of visually challenged passengers. 9). The capacity of the food shelves has also been enhanced to maintain better hygiene. There are plans to improve catering services as well. 10). Eventually, Northern Railways plans to provide CCTV and GPS-based passenger information system in all coaches. Voicing this particular advertisement was abit tricky at first because if you really listened closely their was an intro before I actually read out the Headliners for the New York Times. The tricky parts are that (1) It must sound as similar as possible as the {intro and outro} and (2) Must be of the same pace and within time for the ad not to go over. In 1993, the California Milk Processing Board changed the landscape of advertising forever with one short question: Got Milk? For such a short, and odd question, the phrase became famous around the country and still offers up images of celebrities with milk moustaches on a regular basis over 25 years later. The famous ad campaign was developed by an agency for the California Milk Board, but luckily, they allowed other milk boards around the country to start using the phrase in 1995, spreading the ads all around the country. Since then, celebrities ranging from Britney Spears to Elton John to Tom Brady and hundreds more had donned the famous milk moustache in thousands of magazine ads, TV commercials, billboards and anywhere else things are advertised. While it's impossible to measure the results, it's fair to say that milk consumption has risen in part due to the famous Got Milk ads. Based on its longevity and success so far, it's unlikely these ads will go away anytime soon. Sorry for those of you who hate them. Number 9: American Express' Small Business Saturday One of the most unique marketing ploys in recent years has not been for a single product or company, but for a concept: shopping on Main Street. When American Express launched an ad campaign in 2010 to promote shopping at small businesses during the holiday season, nobody could have predicted they were inventing a new pseudo-holiday. But why would a company try to push the idea of shopping anywhere versus at a specific store? Because as a credit card company, American Express benefits every time you swipe their card. So, why tell people to shop at small businesses? Well, everybody is already shopping at the big box stores year-round, especially at Christmas, so a credit card company telling people to do what they already do is sorta pointless. Couple this with people wanting to support local businesses more often than they do and you have the perfect untapped concept to sponsor. Making the "holiday" even more unique is the timeframe, having been created in 2010. American Express has been able to drive the marketing through social media such as Twitter hashtags, sharing and online advertising instead of traditional marketing. Great idea or crazy? I guess time will tell. Number 8: Pepsi's Billion Dollar Giveaway. Pepsi advertises in some weird ways. Most companies would be fine trying to give away 1 million dollars, but not these guys. In the summer of 2003 they launched what they wanted to become an annual billion-dollar giveaway. The craziest thing is that it failed so badly most people don't even remember it taking place. The game was simple: Pepsi printed 1 billion codes with their products and chose 100 codes at random. These 100 codes provided them with 100 contestants who would appear on a 2-hour game show special. During the show, contestants would be eliminated as a monkey (yes, a monkey) rolled dice to see who would go home. Eventually, one person would need to roll dice and match the exact rolls in the exact order as the monkey (yes, a monkey!). Needless to say, there was no billion-dollar winner. Somehow the special didn't ever happen and the contest was dropped for 2004. Nobody won the billion dollars but a few contestants won a few cash prizes. At least somebody benefited. Number 7: Everybody Gets A Car In 2004, Oprah became even more famous than she already was to begin with. On her annual "Favorite Things" episode, Oprah would give away all kinds of items she liked (or was sponsored to give away). In 2004, one of her favorite things was a new Pontiac, so everybody in the audience, all 276 people, received a free car. This goes down in history as one of the largest, and most expensive, giveaways in TV history, coming in at about $7 million dollars. But some critics say it was a bad move by GM to do it, while others say that $7 million in traditional advertising would have been forgotten in the long run. On the negative side, GM reported that they did not see a bump in Pontiac sales after the promotion, and the car that was given away was more heavily promoted towards men rather than women, making the Oprah show an odd choice of venue for the giveaway. Either way, people still talk about the event more than a decade later. Unfortunately for GM, the marketing brings up more of an image of Oprah, than of a Pontiac.
