In-Text Citations Made Easy (APA)

07:38
Whenever you use a source, you must have an in-text citation and a reference citation. They're a matched pair--like shoes or gloves. What are the differences between an APA in-text citation and an APA reference citation? How do the two work together? This video explains how to format and coordinate your APA in-text citations with your APA reference citations in the context of a discussion board post. But the same principles for using APA in-text citations applies to anything that you write which cites sources: DB posts, APA research papers, APA PowerPoints, and so on. APA in-text citations are just an abbreviated form of a reference citation (which is given only once). But APA in-text citations have to be used in every sentence that borrows from a source. But don't worry. There are simple, easy-to-understand tips and tricks for in-text citations that will have you citing perfectly in just a few minutes. In-text citations--the easy way! This is a visual approach to writing APA in Word. At the end you'll find the steps used, which you can copy or screen print. Created for my college students, but shared in the hope that it helps others. If you have an earlier version of Word, just look for the same keywords, such as "different first page". Other how-to APA topics, such as citations and references, will appear in subsequent videos.

Citing a Book using APA Citation Style

03:34
This video covers the basics of how to create a reference list citation for a book using APA citation style. All entries in the reference list, including book citations, should have a ½” hanging indent. If you aren’t sure how to format a hanging indent, please refer to the handouts in the Alverno Library’s Citation Guide: http://libguides.alverno.edu/citingsources Begin the citation with the authors’ names. When the book has multiple authors, the last author is proceeded by an ampersand (&) – however different rules apply if there are more than 7 authors. Spell out the entire last name followed by the first and (if present) middle initial. Do not spell out the first or middle name and do not include the author’s credentials (such as PhD or MBA…). The next element of a book citation is the publication year. Use the most recent copyright date, enclosed in parentheses and followed by a period. The publication date is typically found on the book’s title page or the backside of the title page (also known as the verso). If you borrowed the book from the library, you will also find this information by looking the book up in your library’s online catalog. Next, provide the title of the book. Notice that the entire book title is in italics. Also, note the capitalization. For book titles, the only words that are capitalized are the first word of the title, first word of the subtitle, which typically follows a colon, and proper nouns – such as names of countries, organizations, and people. In this example the word “Qualitative” is capitalized because it is the first word of the subtitle. If the edition is other than the first, add a notation for the edition in parenthesis. Finally, a book citation will include information about the publisher. Start with the publisher’s location – list the city followed by the U. S. Postal Service abbreviation for the state. If more than one location is listed, use the first city listed or the city where the publisher's headquarters is located. If the publisher is outside of the United States, list the city and country. The publisher’s location is followed by a colon. The name of the publisher is the last element of the book citation. The name is given in as brief a form as possible and you will want to eliminate unnecessary words such as Publisher, Co. (for company), or Inc. (for incorporated). End the entire citation with a period and you are done.

How to reference a book written by multiple authors in APA format

01:53
Hello and welcome to the video reference series presented by termpapergurus.com. In this lecture, we will discuss how to cite a book written by two or more authors in the reference list of a APA format paper. The part after the name of the authors is exactly the same as that of the single authors. That is, the book title is in italics and that is followed by the city the book was published in and the name of the publisher. All of this is found either on the front or back cover of the book or on the first few pages. Also, remember to capitalize only the first word of the book title and proper nouns. NOTHING ELSE! The more confusing part in this reference is of the names of the authors. A key point to remember here is to use the ampersand symbol before the last name of the last author. A key point to remember here is to use the ampersand symbol before the last name of the last author. Students often don't use the symbol and spell out and instead which is penalized by intructors. Also, remember to use a comma after the period you placed after the middle initial. This needs to be done for all the authors except for the last one. And finally, in case you have a book which is authored by six authors you need to use the first six authors' names, and replace the seventh and subsequent authors with "et al.," which means "and others." Like so. Here is an example of a citation. Please remember, to use hanging indents. If you don't know how to use them, we have a separate video on it. Please click the link and it will take you there. That's all for this video I guess, take good care of your academics! Bye! Sample citation from the video Last name, First initial. This is followed by the abbreviation "Ed." and "Eds." if there is more than one editor. The rest of the citation is as usual. The book title is italicized and the location is followed by the name of the publisher. Need I mention again, the "location" is the city where the book was published.
