04:37
Video Series: The Cognitive Principles of Effective Teaching This is a series of five brief videos on the cognitive basis of effective teaching. The purpose of the videos is to synthesize current research in cognitive psychology relevant to student learning and to present the information in a form that is helpful to teachers for improving the design, implementation, and assessment of pedagogy. Below is a summary of each video. Video 1: Beliefs about Teaching This first video is about how the beliefs teachers hold about teaching and learning influence teaching effectiveness. I discuss teacher beliefs that can help or undermine teaching. I also emphasize the importance of teachers having an accurate understanding of how people learn in order to be successful.

Five Principles of Extraordinary Math Teaching | Dan Finkel | TEDxRainier

14:42
In this perspective-expanding and enjoyable talk, Dan Finkel invites us to approach learning and teaching math with courage, curiosity, and a sense of play. Dan Finkel wants everyone to have fun with math. After completing his Ph.D. in algebraic geometry at the University of Washington, he decided that teaching math was the most important contribution he could make to the world. He has devoted much of his life to understanding and teaching the motivation, history, aesthetics, and deep structure of mathematics. Dan is the Founder and Director of Operations of Math for Love, a Seattle-based organization devoted to transforming how math is taught and learned. A teacher of teachers and students, Dan works with schools, develops curriculum, leads teacher workshops, and gives talks on mathematics and education throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Dan is one of the creators of Prime Climb, the beautiful, colorful, mathematical board game. He contributes regularly to the New York Times Numberplay blog and hosts Seattle’s Julia Robinson Math Festival annually. In his spare time he performs improv comedy in Seattle. Description: [ White man with brown ponytail, auburn beard, and wearing light-blue buttons Polo. Royal blue background.] I am Chris Warmack I teach sign language. ASL, American Sign Language. I explain you my three teaching philosophy. I strong believe students to enter classroom or online, not matters. students will learn while using TL, Target language. What language student will use? Sign Language. Also, Student will experience deaf culture, too. Notional-Functional Syllabus, abbreviation, NFS. What is their goal? The method’s goal is focus function. For example, one-on-one student. Teacher watch one-on-one students’ chatting in sign language the conversation has function. reality example, student asks another student. Student: What you doing during your free time? Another student replied, I do like play video game when I have free time. Function goal: one-on-one conversation in ASL. Limit to two students conversation? Three, four, Or five students conversation can work. (Brown & Lee, 2015) Communicative Language Teaching, abbreviation, CLT. Similar with NFS but included grammar. One-on-one students chat in sign language. Teacher spots student’s sign was not clear. Teacher takes action and support student’s sign. Concept of a coach. Teacher signs accurately. Student finally signs accurately. From teacher’s aid to sign language. One-on-one students. One student practice and represent as waitress, and another student represent as customer. Student-customer: look at menu. The student-customer wants a Sprite drink. Also, want pancake without peanut. Student-waitress: Asking customer, What drink do you want? Student-customer: Sprite. Student-waitress: Writes down on piece of paper. Then, ask customer, what food do you want? Student-customer: Pancake without peanut because I'm allergy to peanut. Student-waitress: oh I see, this is matter of information. The conversation in sign language have meaningful. (Baker-Shenk & Cokely, 1991, Brown & Abeywickrama, 2010, Brown & Lee, 2015, and Richards & Rodgers, 2014) Task-Based Language Teaching, abbreviation, TBLT. Similar CLT but narrower to Task goal. What does it mean? Real world context events. Pick an event into classroom. One-on-one students will surrogates. Student surrogates as patient. another student surrogates as doctor. How student-patient to start to make an appointment? Student-patient: Start to call doctor on videophone. Student-doctor receive and answer the call. Both students; arrange plan, to pick an available date. Finalize arrange date for doctor appointment. Open to arrange. Then, make an appointment and close. This is authentic language user. (Brown & Lee, 2015; Richards & Rodgers, 2014) Three methods have different benefits. NFS: goal focus function. CLT: goal focus chat in sign language. TBLT: goal practice surrogate while sign language. Whole three methods are my teaching philosophy. Reference Baker-Shenk, C. & Cokely, D.
