What Is Anaerobic Respiration | Biology for All | FuseSchool

Sometimes animals and plants cannot get enough oxygen to respire aerobically, such as during intense exercise, but they still need to respire to survive. After all, everything relies on respiration for energy. Luckily there is a back-up plan; anaerobic respiration. The generalised equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles is: glucose --- lactic acid + energy. There is no oxygen involved in anaerobic respiration. It is much less efficient than aerobic respiration, and much less energy is released. This is because the glucose is only partially broken down. Another problem is that lactic acid is produced. This is actually a poisonous chemical that if it builds up in the body, the muscles stop working and you get muscle cramp.You can only get rid of the lactic acid by taking in oxygen again and thus replacing the oxygen debt. Oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid, turning it into carbon dioxide and water. The oxygen supply can also run out for plants too, such as in waterlogged soils. This then forces plants to have to carry out anaerobic respiration, as they too need to respire constantly. The generalised anaerobic respiration equation for plants is: Glucose --- Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide + Energy. In yeast, this process is called fermentation and is used to bake bread and brew alcohol. Ever wondered why feel all stiff the day after doing lots of exercise, in order for you to contract your muscles they need the energy that is released in respiration. However, when you're doing heavy exercise for a long time the muscles can't always get the oxygen they need to carry out aerobic respiration. In this case the muscle cells can switch to carry out another type of respiration called anaerobic respiration. this is respiration without oxygen so why don't we just do this respiration all the time if we don't need oxygen that we don't need to bother breathing. Well unfortunately anaerobic respiration is not as good as aerobic firstly it only produces a small amount of energy compared to aerobic respiration and also it produces a nasty waste product called lactic acid. The muscles in your forearm which control the fingers been out carrying out anaerobic respiration. After a while the lactic acid will start to build up in the muscles and it causes pain. When you stop exercising you will need to break down this lactic acid. To do this lactic acid needs to travel in the blood to deliver. Here it is broken down using oxygen into carbon dioxide and water.  After vigorous exercise, you may find you are still breathing very heavily for a time afterwards. This is to get the oxygen into the blood needed to break down lactic acid. We say after doing anaerobic respiration that you’re an oxygen debt, if you need to pay back the oxygen to the body. So, to answer the question at the start of the video, why do you feel stiff after exercise? it's all to do with lactic acid if you stop moving straight after exercise then the blood does not return to deliver and the lactic acid stays and the muscles. This is what makes them stiff the next day. Even though this story is fictional, similarities in John's abilities can be observed in reality. Are you acquainted with the term "anaerobic respiration"? I know this terminology may sound foreign to most but it actually is an important component in the daily lives of many organisms. Just like John's power, anaerobic respiration is used in different aspects. It can be used for economical use, physical use, environmental processes, and many more. To know more about this useful process, check out the video presented to you by Paolo Echavez, Reign Paquibot, and Jeb Lomondot. #rxneverywhere STEPS: 1) On the 1st weekend ever since the project was announced, our group did the research regarding our main topic, anaerobic respiration. All three members cooperated to research the necessary information. 2) We started filming for the video last September 12, 2016. All three members once again cooperated in this step. 3) We started editing the video a week ago (September 24, 2016) using VideoPad Video Editor. It was a collaborative effort with Paolo Echavez doing the edits. Online communication gave way for suggestions and updates within the group. 4) Finalizations were made today, October 2, 2016. These finalizations included the script made by Jebreel Lomondot, and the video description and steps made by Reign Paquibot. SCRIPT: Humans primarily engage in a metabolic pathway called aerobic respiration for energy. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen as an electron acceptor, which enables the “burning” of food. Now what if your body demands more energy, but does not have enough oxygen to supply? The body then shifts to Anaerobic respiration. Anaerobic respiration refers to oxidation of molecules in the absence of oxygen to produce energy, in opposition to aerobic respiration which does use oxygen. It requires other electron acceptors such as nitrate, sulfate, elemental sulfur, and carbon dioxide to replace oxygen. It is basically a set of chemical reactions that allow cells to gain energy from complex molecules without oxygen. This anaerobic respiration is not used only by humans but also by organisms who live in environments with little levels of oxygen. So what is the reaction then? The reaction happens when glucose gets converted to lactic acid and energy. Plants may also resort to using anaerobic respiration. In plants, glucose gets converted to Ethanol, Carbon dioxide, and Energy. This reaction also occurs in yeast cells and is called fermentation. Fermentation is used in baking bread and brewing alcohol. Let's look at the pros and cons of this chemical reaction as it relates to human beings. Here are the pros: Anaerobic respiration allows muscles to keep working even if there's an oxygen-deficiency. The energy created by anaerobic respiration can be readily absorbed, giving bursts of energy in need to respond to situations. Anaerobic exercises can improve respiration rates and lactic acid thresholds Here are the cons: It produces lactic acid wherein too much will cause muscle cramps. This process is a temporary solution which provides energy for only a limited amount of time. It does not provide endurance energy. Too much anaerobic exercise pushes muscles too its limit causing fatigue and possible injury. Muscle tissue can be consumed for energy instead of fat tissues. Now overall, anaerobic respiration is a chemical reaction that happens more often than you think. It happens in both humans, and plants. It has many benefits, but it also has its disadvantages. Nonetheless, anaerobic respiration is used in many helpful things like baking and alcohol brewing which improve our daily lives. Credits are stated in the video itself. Once upon a time, for me, the word 'aerobic,' made me think of sweaty middle aged ladies in leotards. ...and as for anerobic....some kind of fancy dress? It turns out that they are actually two different ways of exercising and each gives its own distinct benefit. Let's first look at aerobic exercise. When we exercise aerobically, our muscles are using oxygen as their main fuel source. Seeing as oxygen is all around us we can, in theory, exercise for hours on end as long as we top up that fuel with food and water. Typically, aerobic exercise takes place between 40 and 65% of our maximum heart rates. In cycling terms this is could be when we are spinning light gears and taking things reasonably easy. The benefit of aerobic exercise is that it improves our cardiovascular systems and burns fat. Happy days. Once we start exceeding 65% of our max heart rate we begin exercising anaerobically. This is when our bodies begin supplementing some of that oxygen fuel source with the glycogen stored in our muscles. The further towards our maximum heart rates we go, the less oxygen and the more glycogen we use. Unlike oxygen, glycogen is in limited supply so we can't exercise at this level for very long. Hard riding, climbing and all out sprints are all examples of cycling anaerobically. The benefit of this type of riding is stronger muscles and improved speed. You'll certainly know when you've been exercising anaerobically because your muscles will ache the day after. This is due to a build up of lactic acid which is a by-product of glycogen as it is used as by the body. Typically, a good training plan will use both kinds of exercise; aerobic at first to build general fitness and then increasing levels of anaerobic to build speed and endurance. A good heart rate monitor will help you to measure your efforts and ensure you are in the correct zone. I've already posted a film explaining this so please take a look. Anaerobic respiration is less efficient: Anaerobic respiration is wasteful of respiratory substrate. The useful product is a tiny quantity of ATP only, when compared with the yield of ATP from aerobic respiration of the same quantity of respiratory substrate. Also, the waste products ethanol or lactic acid contain much unused chemical energy. For example, ethanol is a very good fuel, in its own right. Lactic acid and ethanol may also be harmful to organisms if they accumulate .However, organisms may be able to tap the energy locked up in the waste products of fermentation by converting them back to sugar which can then be respired. For example in the vertebrate body, lactic acid is eventually converted back to glucose in the liver. Yeast, on the other hand, cannot metabolise ethanol, which makes it a useful organism in the industrial production of ethanol. The energy released during respiration is chemical energy. There are two types of respiration- aerobic and anaerobic respiration. During aerobic respiration, complete oxidation of carbohydrates takes place. Glucose is broken down by oxygen to release energy, while carbon dioxide and water are the by-products of the reaction. Aerobic respiration occurs in plants as well as animals and takes place in the mitochondria. Sometimes there is not enough oxygen around for animals and plants to respire, but they still need energy to survive, so they carry out respiration in the absence of oxygen to produce the energy they require. As the respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen, incomplete oxidation of food occurs and much less energy is released. However, carbon dioxide is still produced. This is called anaerobic respiration and the process occurs in the cytoplasm. This video explains how to show experimentally that carbon dioxide is given out during respiration.

In this final video in the sequence about Cellular Respiration, I explain what happens during Anaerobic Respiration (in the absence of Oxygen). Under aerobic conditions, Pyruvate from Glycolysis is able to enter The Link Reaction thus leading to Krebs Cycle and Oxidative Phosphorylation. In anaerobic conditions, this is not possible and Pyruvate must become reduced to replenish NAD stores so as to allow Glycolysis to continue. This is the only source of ATP in this instance. In Yeast and some bacteria, ethanol and carbon dioxide are produced as end products, whereas in humans, Lactate is made.
