Globally, China is the largest automotive market, both in terms of demand and supply. In 2017, China produced almost 25 million passenger cars and around four million commercial vehicles. China is expected to also drive demand in the automotive market, with close to 35 million expected vehicle sales in 2020. It's a serious question! A lot has changed in the Chinese Automotive industry since I bought my Chinese car 8 years ago, come and find out if Chinese cars can now stand up to their international competition. The automotive industry in China has been the largest in the world measured by automobile unit production since 2008. Since 2009, annual production of automobiles in China exceeds that of the European Union or that of the United States and Japan combined. The traditional "Big Four" domestic car manufacturers are SAIC Motor, Dongfeng, FAW and Chang’an. Other Chinese car manufacturers are Beijing Automotive Group, Brilliance Automotive, BYD, Chery, Geely, Jianghuai (JAC), Great Wall, and Guangzhou Automobile Group. In addition, several multinational manufacturers have partnerships with domestic manufacturers. While most of the cars manufactured in China are sold within China, exports reached 814,300 units in 2011. China's home market provides its automakers a solid base and Chinese economic planners hope to build globally competitive auto companies that will become more and more attractive and reliable over the years. China's automobile industry had mainly Soviet origins (plants and licensed auto design were founded in the 1950s, with the help of the USSR) and had small volumes for the first 30 years of the republic, not exceeding 100–200 thousands per year. Since the early 1990s, it has developed rapidly. China's annual automobile production capacity first exceeded one million in 1992. By 2000, China was producing over two million vehicles. After China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the development of the automobile market accelerated further. Between 2002 and 2007, China's national automobile market grew by an average 21 percent, or one million vehicles year-on-year. In 2009, China produced 13.79 million automobiles, of which 8 million were passenger cars and 3.41 million were commercial vehicles and surpassed the United States as the world's largest automobile producer by volume. In 2010, both sales and production topped 18 million units, with 13.76 million passenger cars delivered, in each case the largest by any nation in history. In 2014, total vehicle production in China reached 23.720 million, accounting for 26% of global automotive production. The number of registered cars, buses, vans, and trucks on the road in China reached 62 million in 2009, and is expected to exceed 200 million by 2020. The consultancy McKinsey & Company estimates that China's car market will grow tenfold between 2005 and 2030. The main industry group for the Chinese automotive industry is the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (中国汽车工业协会).

The Weltmeister EX5 has been launched on the Chinese car market. The EX5 is a new mid-size full electric SUV. Price, including clean-car subsidies, starts at 149.000 yuan and ends at 216.300 yuan. The company doesn’t have dealers yet. Buyers can only order the EX5 directly from the factory. Nice. But what about service..? They say they will open ‘brand experience centers’ but when and where is unclear. WM Motors calls their sales system C2M, customer-to-manufacturer. About 21 days after the order the vehicle will be delivered at the home of the buyer. The order books are open but WM Motors says the “bulk” of deliveries will only start in the second half of the year. WM Motors has a factory in Suzhou with an initial annual output of 50.000 cars. Weltmeister is a new Chinese EV brand, owned by a company called WM Motors. Weltmeister means world champion, in German. The Chinese name is Weima (威马). It too has a W and an M but the meaning is rather different; Weima means powerful horse. The company was founded by Freeman Shen, a former hot shot executive of Geely. His co-founder calls himself Napoleon. There are three versions: the EX5 300 with a 300 kilometer range, the EX400 with a 400 kilometer range, and the EX500 with a… 460 kilometer range. The electric motor is the same in all versions, with an output of 218 hp and 315 Nm. A full charge on 220V takes 10.7 hours. Weltmeister claims that charging from 30% to 80% takes just 42 minutes. Power train setup: the battery pack is located under the floor in the center of the car, the motor is located over the front axle. Size: 4585/1835/1672, wheelbase is 2703. The EX5 has become a good looking car. Clean and modern, but not very exciting. Door handles click open when you approach the car, in Tesla-style. The dash comes with a 12.3 inch digital dashboard and a 12.8 inch rotating screen. The screen can rotate 90 degrees from landscape to portrait and back. There is also an air purification system, cleaning up the smoggy Chinese air for the cabin’s occupants. The sound system has 11 speakers. The EX5 is equipped with an advanced infotainment system that has an interesting function called WM ID. When you enter the car for the first time the system scans your face. The next time you approach the vehicle a face recognition sensor in the B-pillar will recognize you and allow you to open the door and start the car. Your face and your setting will be uploaded to the Weltmeister cloud. When you enter another EX5, one you have rented for example, the system will again recognize you and apply all your settings in the other car. The B-pillar based face recognition system in action, saying “Ni hao Wesley”. It also shows the charging percentage and range. Weltmeister targets young and cool folk, like this man wearing a trendy blue hat. He is on his way to connect a cable to the EX5. But he has to be careful there because he is dragging the cable straight over the railway for an electric tramcar. He could be killed by an electric shock or by a fast approaching tram. Electric trams are very common in European cities, where this scene is photo shopped, but not in China. Perhaps Weltmeister missed the significance of the rails. The new Weltmeister EX5. A nice looking car with a proper range, interesting technology, and a decent price. But it will be a hard sell nevertheless, as long as there isn’t a real dealer and service network.

The Chinese car market is the biggest passenger car market in the world. It became the largest in 2009, and has remained the largest ever since. In 2015, automakers sold 21.1 million passenger cars, up 7.3% from 2014. That number is less stellar than before, 10% in 2014 and 16% in 2013, but the growth alone (1.1 million) is almost as big as the entire Australian car market (1.15 million). Chinese car buyers are lucky. They can choose between more brands and more cars than any other car buyer in any other country. The number of brands is staggering. As of May 2016 there are 130 (one-hundred thirty) passenger car brands available in China. And the moment you read this the number is likely higher yet again, as new brands keep popping up. China's industry ministry is developing a timetable to end production and sale of traditional fuel cars and will promote development of electric technology, state media on Sunday cited a Cabinet official as saying. The reports gave no possible target date, but Beijing is stepping up pressure on automakers to accelerate development of electrics. China is the biggest auto market by number of vehicles sold, giving any policy changes outsize importance for the global industry. A deputy industry minister, Xin Guobin, said at an auto industry forum on Saturday his ministry has begun "research on formulating a timetable to stop production and sales of traditional energy vehicles," according to the Xinhua News Agency and the Communist Party newspaper People's Daily. France and Britain announced in July they will stop sales of gasoline and diesel automobiles by 2040 as part of efforts to reduce pollution and carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. Communist leaders also want to curb China's growing appetite for imported oil and see electric cars as a promising industry in which their country can take an early lead. China passed the United States last year as the biggest electric car market. Sales of electrics and gasoline-electric hybrids rose 50 percent over 2015 to 336,000 vehicles, or 40 percent of global demand. U.S. sales totaled 159,620. The reports of Xin's comments in the eastern city of Tianjin gave no other details about electric car policy but cited him as saying Beijing plans to "elevate new energy vehicles to a new strategic level." Beijing has supported electric development with billions of dollars in research subsidies and incentives to buyers, but is switching to a quota system that will shift the financial burden to automakers. Under the proposed quotas, electric and hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles would have to make up 8 percent of each automaker's output next year, 10 percent in 2019 and 12 percent in 2020. Automakers that fail to meet their target could buy credits from competitors that have a surplus. Chinese automaker BYD Auto, a unit of battery maker BYD Ltd., is the world's biggest electric vehicle maker by number of units sold. It sells gasoline-electric hybrid sedans and SUVs in China and markets all-electric taxis and buses in the United States, Europe and Latin America as well as in China. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "The International Kangaroo Mathematics Contest IKMC Congratulation to Award winners" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHrvmVu28Dc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

This is the Beijing EV160, an electric car made in China. China is doing what American EV manufacturers by and large aren't: making a simple, practical electric car for normal people. Affordable and not fraught with all kinds of fancy technology and driver aids, the EV160 is an unpretentious electric car that's still a joy to drive.

GAC MOTOR MAY BE A RELATIVELY NEW NAME TO QATAR, BUT IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY THEY HAVE LONG BEEN RECOGNISED AS A GLOBAL PLAYER. The parent company GAC Group has been building around 750,000 cars a year on behalf of world-class brands such as Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Isuzu and Fiat. This vast ocean of technical knowledge and expertise has led to the birth of a brand in itself which is now known as GAC Motor. These vehicles are built to the same rigorous standards of quality which are synonymous with their other brands, but also utilize components from reputable international suppliers such as Bosch, Continental and Denso. Every vehicle in the range has been awarded a 5-star rating in the C-NCAP test ratings, which provides every driver with the confidence that both the Passive and Active safety features are beyond question. The quality of these cars and the value for money offered has to be experienced to be believed. The Trumpchi GS8 is a mid-size SUV with third-row seats. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 which is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system. Another potential model is the Trumpchi GS7 small SUV which was shown in January at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. At the time, GAC said it was hopeful of starting sales in the U.S. by 2018 after obtaining certification for its vehicles as well as establishing a network of dealerships. Expect more Chinese automakers to follow the lead of GAC. The New York Times reports that the Chinese government is looking to reduce the current restrictions on cars imported into China, in preparation for an export push for cars made locally. The move is to prevent other countries from accusing China of unfair policies. However, it is in the niche sector of electric vehicles where Beijing sees its best chance to dominate the future market. STORYLINE: Auto industry watchers have been out in force at this year's Auto Shanghai show eager to catch a glimpse of the latest Chinese-made cars. And the future of the Chinese car industry could be this exotic concept vehicle from local Chang'an Motors. Chinese car makers in recent years have launched ambitious plans to mass produce cars while competing internationally with established western and Japanese brands. As the trend for luxurious and spacious cars, much like Geely's Engrand, still dominates the Chinese market, a shift towards greener engines has been a highlight of the show. Beijing sees electric vehicles (EVs) as a field where it can take a global lead, helping to transform China into a creator of technology. On the Chang'an Motors stand EVs take centre stage. Auto Shanghai runs from April 19 to 28. Top 10 Chinese Concept Cars At The 2016 Beijing Auto Show 10. Dongfeng HUV Dongfeng has long been looking for a credible off-road cruiser to cash into their army-vehicle fame. The HUV might be just that; a square shaped rough looking truck on large wheels with an almost straight standing windshield. The production version is expected to launch next year, powered by a decidedly petrol four-cylinder engine. 9. Zhiche Auto SUV The Zhiche Auto SUV is a full-electric aerodynamic four-seat coupe, loaded with technologies for connected-cars and connected-mobility, in short tech that allows a vehicle to communicate with other cars and with the wider world. The Zhiche Auto SUV is developed by a Beijing-based new-energy vehicle (NEV) company, and the production car will launch in 2017. 8. Ranz RF-EA1 The Ranz RF-EA1 is a design study for an exciting electric four-door sport sedan, with a super sleek body and eye-catching black over gold paint. ‘Ranz‘ is a brand owned by the FAW-Toyota joint venture for making cheap electric cars. However, since its inception in 2013 Ranz has failed to launch a single car. The RF-EA1 shows they are still alive. 7. Haval HB-02 The HB-02 shows that the Haval brand, owned by Great Wall Motors, is going for a more daring design for its SUV lineup. Sharp creases, tiny LED lights, and a big gaping grille; the HB-02 has it all. It previews a premium compact crossover that will be launched on the Chinese car market in 2018, mainly aimed at young car buyers living in the big cities. 6. Lingyun Two-seater Lingyun is a company that is absolutely convinced the future lies in two-wheeled electric vehicles. Their latest concept is simply called “Two-seater”, and stands on two wheels, one front and one rear. It uses mechanical gyroscopes to maintain balance, and Lingyun claims battery life is 80% longer than on a four-wheel car. 5. Qiantu Auto K50 Roadster China’s first drop-top electric supercar with stunning lines, a carbon fiber body, and powered by a 400 horsepower motor. Likely the best looking Chinese car ever. The coupe version is expected to hit the market in the fall, with a price similar to the cheapest Tesla Model S. The Roadster will follow in late 2017. 4. Chery FV2030 The Chery FV2030 is a typical example of a truly outrageous concept car, shaped like an off-road racer with gull wing doors, huge wheels, and a fiery red paint job. Some design elements will come back on future production cars, like the chrome bar above the grille and the air inlets in the bumper. 3. LeSee EV The LeSee EV is a four-door electric sedan with semi-autonomous driving, smartphone-based remote control, and a 210 kilometer per hour top speed. The LeSee was developed by LeEco, a Chinese internet compact that also backs Faraday Future. It is intended for the Chinese market and the production version will be made in China. 2. Hongqi B-Concept The B-Concept heralds a new beginning for Hongqi, ‘Red Flag’, the oldest and most famous Chinese automaker, best known for state limousines and parade cars. They are working to shore up their passenger car division and the B-Concept previews a future full-size sedan that will compete with cars like the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. 1. Beijing Auto ArcFox-7 The ArcFox-7 is an extremely beautiful electric supercar with scissor doors. It is based on aFormula E race car, and powered by a 603 horsepower motor. The ArcoFox-7 is mainly intended to draw attention to the booming EV business of Beijing Auto, but small-series production of a track day-only car is a real possibility. The main observable trends that emerge from these concept cars are: a move to electrics cars, steps to more daring design, and a clear up market movement, the infamously cheap Chinese cars are fast becoming a thing of the past. China is the world's largest market for electric vehicles, thanks largely to subsidies that drive costs down. Those incentives will end by 2020, but the government is betting that won't be the end of the road for its electric dream. The new Roewe RX8 has been launched on the Chinese car market. Price starts at 223.800 yuan and ends at 258.800 yuan. The Roewe RX8 is a full-size seven-seat SUV, the new flagship of the Roewe brand. The Roewe RX8 is based on a slightly shortened variant of the platform that also underpins the Maxus D90 SUV (pictured). Roewe and Maxus are brands under the Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation (SAIC). Size Roewe RX8: 4932/1930/1810, wheelbase 2850. Size Maxus D90: 5005/1932/1875, wheelbase 2950. They share the same engine too: a 2.0 turbo with 224 hp and 360 Nm, sending horses to all wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The RX8 looks great, distinguished almost, not unlike the smaller Roewe RX5 SUV. Thge RX8 has no less than six driving modes, ranging from off-road to snow to sport. The RX8 seats five, with an optional third row for two extra seats. The new Roewe RX8 for China. It looks good, engine is good, interior is good, but it seems a bit expensive compared to the competition.

After showing three models at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, China's GAC Motor will return to the heart of the US automotive industry for the second year in a row. GAC - which sells cars in China under the Trumpchi and Gonow brands - will show a new electric car concept and two of its existing models, all as a preamble to its entry into the US market in 2019. One of the cars that GAC brings to the Detroit Motor Show 2018 is expected to be its GA8 luxury sedan. It's almost as long as a Genesis G80 or a Volvo S90, although the only available engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit that produces only 198 horsepower. It is likely that the GAC needs a more powerful option to compete in the US. On the other hand, the GA8 comes with a refrigerator between its rear seats, something you would normally expect to find in a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. It is also expected that GAC will bring its GM8 minivan to Detroit. With only four minivans on the US market-the Chrysler Pacifica, the Honda Odyssey, the Kia Sedona and the Toyota Sienna-the segment could benefit from the arrival of a new competitor. The third vehicle to be shown in Detroit would be an electric car concept, about which GAC has not elaborated. GAC announced in November that it would begin exporting Trumpchi brand cars to the United States in 2019, although it could change its name due to its similarity to President Trump's surname, according to The New York Times. The first GAC vehicle sold in the US it will be the GS8, a large SUV that the manufacturer already showed at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. If GAC fulfills its plans, it will be the first Chinese automotive brand to sell its cars in the United States. The cars that are manufactured in China, including Buick Envision and Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid, are currently sold in the US, but are products of non-Chinese manufacturers. GAC and other Chinese firms have tried to enter the US market. UU for years, but skepticism about the quality of their models and other factors have always prevented that from happening.

Geely has launched the 2018 Emgrand GL sedan in China. The Emgrand GL is considered as one of the most beautiful Chinese sedans as well as the most successful Geely sedan ever. The 2018 model gets revised front and rear bumper design and a modified boot lid with added chrome strip. No changes have been made to the interior of the vehicle, the speedometer still has conventional dials with a small TFT info panel in between. Under the AC vents there is an 8 inch wide touch-screen with touch sensitive buttons on each side. The 2018 Emgrand GL now comes with a new engine under the hood. Geely has ditched the old 1.3-liter turbo engine with 129 hp & 185 Nm of torque, in favor of new 1.4-liter turbo with 133 hp and 215 Nm of torque. Transmission options remains the same with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DCT gearbox. The Emgrand GL is priced from 78,800 yuan (PKR 12.53 lac) to up to 113,800 yuan (PKR 18.1 lac) for the flagship variant. Geely’s acquisition of Volvo in 2010 has helped them quickly gain Volvo’s decades of R&D expertise. Volvo’s Ex Vice President of Design, Peter Horbury is currently heading Geely’s design department as Senior Vice-President & his influence is obvious since Geely has been producing some stunning vehicles lately. In addition to Volvo, Geely also owns London Taxi company, has recently acquired Malaysian Proton and British sports car marque Lotus as well as the sub-brand Lynk & Co. In the first 11 months of 2017, Geely has delivered 1.09 million vehicles in China already achieving 99% of its sales target for 2017. Four models including the Boyue SUV, Emgrand GS, Emgrand GL and Vision crossovers continued to drive Geely’s sales growth. These four models achieved record sales while their combined deliveries totaled 76,229 vehicles, accounting for 54% of the company’s sales. Geely was reportedly in process of making a comeback in Pakistan but their website shows a ‘coming soon’ message since ages, an official announcement however is yet to be made. Since there is a day & night difference between the Geely vehicles that were offered in Pakistan a decade ago versus the ones being produced these days, we can expect to see better Geely vehicles to be introduced in our country whenever they make a comeback.

(16 Jan 2018) LEAD IN: Chinese automaker GAC is changing its brand name as it readies to enter the US market - so that it sound less like Trump. In China, CAG uses the brand name Trumpchi for its cars and SUVs, but the company says it wants to avoid any political links or confusion for its US customers. STORY-LINE: Chinese automaker GAC Motor (Guangzhou Automobile Group) says it's on track to enter the U.S. market in the fourth quarter of next year. Company officials made the statement Monday (15th January 2018) as they introduced two models at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that likely will come to the U.S. At a packed press conference, GAC showed off a concept gull-wing compact electric SUV called the Enverge that one day could be produced. The automaker says it will go over 370 miles on a single charge. "We are in an era revolution in the automobile industry. While switching to our most sustainable energy source, how do we create the charm and the dynamic appearance that is unique to a modern EV? How to attract an impress young people? How to show our determination for the global market as an emergent car brand from China? Now, we have brought you the Everge concept and we strongly believe it's a great answer to those questions," said Zhang Fan, vice president of engineering for GAC Motors. Also unveiled was the GA4 midsize sedan that will go on sale in China later this month. GAC sold just over 500,000 automobiles in China last year, up 37 percent from 2016. The company says it is negotiating with partner Fiat Chrysler about possible distribution of vehicles. It already has a research center in Silicon Valley and is working on another one in Detroit as well as a Los Angeles design center. A spokeswoman says the company's first vehicle in the U.S. will be the GS8, an SUV. It showed video of seven different models during its presentation. The Chinese automaker also said it would scrap the brand name it uses in China when it enters the U.S. market next year because it could be confused with President Donald Trump's surname. For the past eight years, GAC has sold cars and SUVs under the brand Trumpchi in its home market, but is now researching new names before the company's expected U.S. debut in the fourth quarter of 2019. President of Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), Quijing Wang said the company is renaming the brand because it does not want any links with politics. "You know the name of the Trumpchi is actually just a coincidence. We actually named this is 2010 and the Chinese name is Trumpchi. For a Chinese company we always name an English name with a similar pronunciation, so Trumpchi, you know, actually four or five years later, Mr Trump has actually become president of the United States, so this is just a coincidence," he says. GAC picked Trumpchi in 2010, well before Trump was elected. The similarity to Trump is just a coincidence, he added. GAC will continue to use the Chinese name there, the company said. GAC also plans to enter other global markets after the U.S., including Europe. Commentators at the auto show were confident of its success. "Oh, it's realistic, I mean you look at the Chinese automakers and they're way ahead, they know mass production, they can do this. What's interesting is going to be really is the American market ready for a car by GAC?" says Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports. GAC wasn't the only Asian automaker at the show. South Korea's Kia also introduced a new model. The new 2019 Forte takes its inspiration from the Kia Striker. The compact sedan sports an all-new power train and a host of driver comforts, including an eight-inch color touch pad. Toyota took the wraps off its flagship luxury sedan, Avalon. The Zotye Traum S70 has been launched on the Chinese car market, and it has become quite a good looking car, mixing elements of an MPV and an SUV, with a big black grille as the pea on the pie. Traum is a new brand under Zotye Auto. Traum means dream in German. The Traum brand is aimed at young and cool people. The Chinese name has nothing with dreams of Germany; Junma (君马) is best translated as Supreme Horse. The English slogan is Driven by Dreams. The Chinese slogan, translated, Dream for a Horse. Interestingly, the Traum-branded cars are manufactured by Jiangnan Auto, a subsidiary of Zotye most famous for building China’s cheapest car; the Jinan Alto, a continuation of the ancient second generation Suzuki Alto. The Traum S70 is the first car of the Traum brand, with many SUVs, crossovers, and MPVs waiting in the wings. Price starts at 81.9oo yuan and ends at 115.900 yuan. Lone engine is a 1.5 turbo with 158 hp and 215 Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, sending horses to the front wheels. A 116 hp 1.6 will be added to the lineup later. Size: 4746/1882/1700, and wheelbase is 2800. Party piece of the Traum S70 is the dashboard with a 25 inch screen, which really consists of two separate screens: one for the instrument panel and one for the infotainment. The Traum S70 is equipped with a air purifying system to get the dirty 2.5 PM particles out of the smoggy Chinese air. The new Zotye Traum S70 from China. Still a weird name, but overall much better than expected.
