How To Validate Your Startup Ideas | Dan Martell
Have you really validated the need for your product before building it? Do you know how to pre-sell your product before it's made? In this video, I share my best strategies for validating your startup ideas. Are you an entrepreneur? Get free weekly video training here: http://www.danmartell.com/newsletter + Join me on FB: http://FB.com/DanMartell + Connect w/ me live: http://periscope.tv/danmartell + Tweet me: http://twitter.com/danmartell + Instagram awesomeness: http://instagram.com/danmartell Want to know why building a tech startup is TWICE as hard as opening a restaurant? It’s because both the product AND the market are unknown. They need to be figured out... ... for a sushi restaurant you just need to know if people in your city eat sushi - which most do. So the risk is only in building a great restaurant experience... the market & “product” are proven. With tech, it comes down iterating and testing both of these assumptions. 1. Will the product actually do what I think it will (technology / science / etc). 2. Will anyone want it? The cool part is both of these can be figured out fairly quickly if you do it right. One word of caution: It does NOT require an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). Actually, I have a huge problem with the term MVP because it has the word “product” in it. I have a much different (and far more cost+time efficient) approach that I cover in today’s video. It really comes down to a few simple frameworks that I’ve created to help you validate your ideas... and generate the confidence (and initial funding) you need to go all in. Here they are: 1. Idea: Problem, Pain, Passion 2. Validated Research 3. Clickable Prototype 4. Pre-Sales I’ve used this approach to build ALL of my companies and it doesn’t matter if it’s for a consumer application, or a solution for big Fortune 500 companies - it can be done. So before you pour your savings (and next 6 months) into building an “MVP”... … take 5 mins right now to watch today's video and make sure you’re setting yourself up for success right out of the gates. Have an incredible day! With gratitude, – Dan Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/3_A5JNLeHAQ ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Because Dan gives freely of all that he knows. After all, you can only keep what you give away. Equipment Review: Best Laundry Stain Removers & Our Testing Winner
Buy our winning laundry stain remover: http://amzn.to/19fnMkG Full review and results chart: http://cooks.io/1yxCdVP Stain removers abound, all guaranteeing spotless results on the first try. The reality? When it comes to getting out stubborn food stains, almost none of them work. We tested 7 top-selling national laundry stain removers to find the best one: OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Tide Ultra Stain Release Resolve Spray & Wash Laundry Stain Remover Zout Laundry Stain Remover Shout Trigger Triple-Acting Formula Clorox 2 Stain Remover & Color Booster Liquid Resolve Max Power Gel with Scrubnubs We focused on tougher stains. To each white T-shirt and piece of blue cotton fabric, we applied measured samples of six foods that make stubborn stains: melted dark chocolate, hot bacon fat, yellow mustard, black tea, a puree of chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, and pureed blueberries. We would pit each stain remover against this array while noting its ease of use. Best Product Research And Make Money Online With THis Amazing Way
http://www.enrollmarketing.com/free-ebook-5000-in-2-weeks-on-clickbank/ recently came across the new ad from Domino's Pizza where they show a clip of focus groups they conducted with consumers about their products. I love it! The message was clear: they listened to their customers. Their management and product teams were brave enough to really pay attention to what customers think. I'll be eternally grateful to Domino's pizza for the message sent about the value of market research. This may not sound as a novel idea, but many, many companies go about their business thinking they don't need to conduct market research in order to improve their products and grow. They believe they know enough about their industry and product category that there is nothing new to learn. Then there are companies that are barely aware of the importance of research, but see it as an expense and not an investment. They prefer to throw spaghetti at the walls and see what sticks. I don't know how many focus groups Domino's did or if they also used other research methods to test their improved pizzas, but the important thing here is that they were willing to listen to their customers. Now regarding methodology for new product development, I always advise clients to combine qualitative (e.g. focus groups) and quantitative research (e.g. surveys) methods. Qualitative research is by definition exploratory and it is used, when we don't know what to expect, to define the problem or develop an approach to the problem. It's also used to go deeper into issues of interest and explore nuances related to the problem at hand. Quantitative research is conclusive in its purpose as it tries to quantify the problem and understand how prevalent it is by looking for projectable results to a larger population. Here are some guidelines to use both types of research in new product development. Use qualitative research to: Develop an initial understanding of how customers perceive the product category Look for a range of ideas and feelings about your products Understand different perceptions about your products between groups and categories of people Uncover underlying motivations and factors that influence the decision to buy your and your competitors' products Provide information needed to design a quantitative product testing Explain findings from a quantitative product testing Explore different creative solutions to position and advertise the product Use quantitative research to: Recommend a final course of action on which product version should be launched Find whether there is consensus on product appeal, benefits and current or potential customers' purchase intent Project results to a larger population of customers you are targeting Identify evidence regarding cause-and-effect relationships between different factors relevant to the product and purchase behavior Test specific hypotheses about your products Identify and size market segments Describe characteristics of relevant customer segments Combining both approaches when developing new products will give you a solid foundation to make the right decisions for your business grounded in consumer insights. https://youtu.be/P5hmNWdt25k

The Power of Choice: The Life and Ideas of Milton Friedman - Full Video
Teacher, scientist, author, intellectual, and winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Economics, Milton Friedman was one of the 20th century's greatest proponents of free markets and individual liberty. The Power of Choice tells the story of his life. Overcoming almost universal opposition to his unconventional views, Friedman persevered, until eventually, many of his ideas came to be widely accepted. He lived to see those ideas transform economic theory and practice, inspiring changes that have improved the lives of millions of people worldwide. Through interviews with leading economists and policymakers such as Alan Greenspan and Estonia's Prime Minister, Mart Laar, The Power of Choice explores Friedman's tremendous influence on policy - and daily life - in Estonia, Chile, and the United States. This 90-minute documentary, which premiered on public television January 2007, includes a bonus interview with Milton Friedman and Bob Chitester, creator of the Free To Choose television series. CPSIA guns down EASTER BUNNIES! What's Next? WCAX Vermont 01-19-09
Cecilia Leibovitz was planning to sell bunches of her lovingly handcrafted bunnies this Easter, but new CPSIA lead testing regulations have threatened the existence of the cute critters. Her business, Baby Fairies, stopped making them because the testing is so expensive. Leibovitz and her partner, Michael Secore, also run an online store called Craftsbury Kids, which represents about 100 artisans and handcrafters who make toys and clothing. http://www.craftsburykids.com/ Cecilia Leibovitz has been instrumental in the grassroots movement to modify the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act 2008 which will go into effect February 10, 2009. Prohibitively costly lead testing will potentially put out of business thousands of handcrafters, artisans and small businesses which produce and sell children's products. Cecilia Leibovitz's idea to "Save Small Business from the CPSIA" was a winner in the recent Ideas for Change in America Competition on the website change.org. This may be tricky because there is no visual aid to help you see movement, changes, similarities or differences, and so on. You can approach a table in the same way you would a graph or chart: look for highs, lows, common features, differences, etc. In this video, I walk you through a table report with a sample and full summary. You can also see the task and two versions of the summary here: https://writetotop.com/ielts-academic-task-1-table/ Find more writing tips at https://writetotop.com/ Need ideas for your essays? Tim Brown of IDEO & Designthinking: Big Idea We will shift from being consumers to participants
Ideo CEO Tim Brown says that communications technology is leading us back to the kind of participation economy that existed before the industrial revolution such that a great product or service is no longer defined as something where the customer doesn't have to do anything. A good service will be defined as one that draws customers in as participants. In this video interview, Brown expands on the implications of communications technology for businesses and designers with Ideas Project, a new website brought to you by Nokia. Ideas Project is an online space that provides a new way to interact with thought leaders and their big ideas about the future of connected communications. For more on this idea from Tim Brown, visit http://www.ideasproject.com. Tim Brown, who became CEO of the renowned design firm Ideo in 2000, believes in the development of ideas through action--observing customers, prototyping, testing, refining--rather than abstract thought. An industrial designer by training, his work has earned him numerous design awards and has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Axis Gallery in Tokyo, and the Design Museum in London. Tim advises senior executives and boards of Fortune 100 companies and has led strategic client relationships with such organizations as Mayo Clinic, Microsoft, Pepsi, Procter & Gamble, and Steelcase. Tim has a special interest in the convergence of technology and the arts, as well as the ways in which design can be used to promote the well being of people living in emerging economies. A regular speaker on the value of design thinking, his upcoming book, Change By Design, on how design thinking transforms organizations, will be released by HarperBusiness in September 2009. Ideas Project, a project of Nokia, brings together the most visionary and influential big thinkers to contemplate the big ideas that matter most to the future of communications. It is also a new kind of conversation platform aimed at uncovering the connections between these big thinkers and their disruptive ideas. Explore the Ideas Project website at http://www.ideasproject.com, subscribe to its RSS feed, join its Twitter feed, and come back often to learn about great new big ideas as they break.

Invest in Product Concept Testing
“I really feel like the research that has the biggest bang for the buck, it truly is concept testing,” says Debra Kassarjian, an independent contractor and owner of DKInsights. Kassarjian says concept testing allows you to try different ideas and hypotheses, but it also gives you quantitative information about the concept and the consumer. This information can be used to improve your product. Kassarjian was one of the speakers at Springfield Business Journal's Beyond Data event.

Why we're testing our drinking water. This year's science project.
Your drinking water is not as safe as you think it is. Years ago, we thought lead was safe. We didn't worry about little Mikey chewing on the paint chips falling off the moulding in his home. As a small child, I remember playing with liquid mercury I found rolling down the city street. I fear that many of the compounds we believe are innocuous today may be found to be dangerous tomorrow. The delay between whispers and legislation can be decades -- and those decades could take a toll on your life and the health of your family. Are you willing to take that chance? We're not. If you're here reading these words, you too are already asking the right questions. Stay tuned for our interesting results, and see www.zangawater.com for more on our filtering systems. We're using this test as this year's 7th grade science project.

New smartphone product testing: funny focus groups
This video is an edited highlights version of focus groups at the "Product Testing Institute" for Sony Ericsson's new Xperia 10 smartphone (Android OS). There are 5 groups comprised of cute toddlers, clueless old guys, wannabe rockers, airhead models, self-absorbed muscle men...and a deadpan moderator. They are all actors, of course, and the videos are part of a clever viral campaign supporting the device's launch. This is a good example of tech-based alternative marketing strategies, as well as illustrative of what can actually happen in focus groups (though most group sizes are normally 8-12 people). Enjoy! Here's Sony Ericcson's YouTube channel where you can see the full versions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q2QR_S3YK8

iPhone 8 DROP TEST!! - 'Most Durable Glass' Ever?
Show Anker some love for making this iPhone 8 drop possible! Anker KARAPAX Shield+ Case for iPhone 8 / iPhone 7: http://amzn.to/2juRLii Anker KARAPAX Shield+ Case for iPhone 8 Plus / iPhone 7 Plus: http://amzn.to/2fm9TXl Apple claims that the glass on their New iPhone 8 is the Most durable glass ever on a smartphon. Thats a pretty bold claim! Since apple is one of the largest smartphone manufactures on earth Its important that their phones can handle abuse. This iphone 8 droptest, even with a small sample size, will give a general idea of what to expect if you were to ever drop your iphone on the ground. Will the iphone 8 survive a normal every day drop situation? Is the glass on the iPhone 8 more durable than on another type of smartphone? Like samsung? One thing to take into consideration is that if you were to ever crack the glass on your samsung smartphone... the repair is very simple, and would only cost about 15 or 20 dollarsl for the replacement glass panel. With the iphone... the glass panel does not come off. The glue is permanent. So the repair process will be MUCH more difficult. iPhone 8 Durability Test video: https://youtu.be/lLAmL6Tz59Y iPhone 8 Teardown: https://youtu.be/2B1ZxR9xpwQ Awesome iPhone Tool Kit: http://amzn.to/2xu8VBL Green Pry tool: http://amzn.to/1Tu57pI Metal phone opening tool: http://amzn.to/1WdOFv0 The camera I used to film this video: http://amzn.to/2p7GtkX Wide angle lens: http://amzn.to/2qiYM4u And this Metabones adapter: http://amzn.to/2iZ67Ty This is the drone I use: http://amzn.to/2joH00G *Follow me for updates!* Instagram: http://instagram.com/zacksjerryrig Facebook: http://on.fb.me/1U4bQqv Twitter: https://twitter.com/ZacksJerryRig Snapchat: http://bit.ly/1UAb2Fq GooglePlus: https://bit.ly/1YyKice JerryRigEverything assumes no liability for property damage or injury incurred as a result of any of the information contained in this video. How to Design and Manufacture a Product
It can be quite a challenge to find a manufacturer -- one you like working with and whose factory produces a quality product at a fair price. Here are some tips on how to navigate through the process of finding one, as well as how to optimize your relationship with your manufacturer so that you -- and your customers -- are happy. For more infor visit: http://www.focuspdm.com/ Step 1: Creating a Prototype Creating a working prototype or finding someone who can do it for you is the first step in the manufacturing process. During my early days, I was able to sew most of my prototypes. But as my product, Planecomfort, was refined and the components used and the skills necessary to create the product I envisioned moved beyond my sewing expertise, I knew I needed help. Searching online, I found a wonderful yet small cut-and-sew business in northern California called Left in Stitches. This relationship proved valuable to me in a number of ways. They not only helped refine my original prototype, but they offered many suggestions and ideas for making the product easier to manufacture. Many of these smaller domestic companies offer prototyping services that are invaluable to new entrepreneurs. Once you have a prototype, there is quality and design testing and tweaking. At each stage of development, and every time I received the newer version of my product, I washed, dried, pulled, stretched, zipped, unzipped, and put my product through the proverbial "ringer." Making sure your product will exceed your customers' expectations is a sure way to keep them coming back and referring your product to others. Ideally, you want to have a dozen or so finished prototypes. Manufacturers will want one or two samples sent to them as a reference to compare to the finished product their factory is making. I thought I would be able to use Left in Stitches for the long term, but due to logistical reasons and production costs, I had to find an overseas manufacturer. Moving your manufacturing operations overseas means you want large quantities (usually thousands) of the item you are producing. If you want hundreds of something, you may be better off working with a domestic manufacturer. Step 2: Finding a Manufacturer I located my overseas manufacturers through referrals, which provided me with an immediate level of comfort and confidence with these factories. One referral came from a fabric manufacturer. Most fabric manufacturers have relationships with product manufacturers. Another factory was referred to me by a marketing services company. This company manufactures both soft and hard goods and was happy to provide their contact with another business opportunity. Call domestic manufacturers and inquire about their overseas connections. Ask everyone you know if they know someone who manufactures the type of products you are creating. Search online for companies with products similar to yours and call them. Who do they use? How did they get started? My experience is that most people will want to help you. I found it was best to work with at least two different companies when trying to decide who will win your business. Who is easiest to work with? Who meets (or beats) your expectations? Is one more knowledgeable than the other? Having a comparison is essential to ensure you are getting a quality product at a fair price. There are two common ways you can deal with overseas manufacturing. You can find a broker or agent in the U.S. that represents the factory, or deal with a factory directly. Once you have determined who you might like to work with, you must check references on your contact and the factory. Some of the important questions to ask: Was the product made to specifications? What percentage of the shipment was defective? If there was a problem with the shipment, did the factory make restitution? Were deadlines met? If not, what did the factory offer to make amends? Is what was promised delivered? How is the quality of goods they produce? How long have you worked with this person and factory? How many orders have you placed? Is your contact easy to work with? Is he/she responsive to calls and emails? What type of projects does the factory excel in producing? Soft goods, hard goods? What types of companies do they normally work with? Who is responsible for landing the goods in the U.S.? Text by Ann Merlini, founder of Pac'n Nap, LLC. For more information on How to Design and Manufacture a Product visit: http://www.focuspdm.com/

O'Reilly Webcast with Rosenfeld Media: Putting Some UX Muscle on Lean Methods
Lean Startup and similar methods are a giant step forward in helping us test our risky ideas and iterate until we find product-market fit. But figuring out what ideas to test is often based on gut instinct alone. Victor Lombardi, author of Why We Fail, spent the past two years researching websites and consumer electronics that were successfully launched and hailed as great designs, but failed unexpectedly when people used them, such as Google Wave, Pownce, and Microsoft's Zune. Victor found a set of distinct patterns of failure that we can use to identify the customer experience risk in our own products. In this webcast you'll learn: The difference between design and the customers' experience Why understanding your customers' experience is increasingly important Case studies of well-designed products with undesirable experiences Patterns of experience failure How we can avoid customer experience failure in our own work About Victor Lombardi Victor helps organizations design products and build businesses that offer the best possible consumer experience. He does this by combining his liberal arts education and technology industry work into a perspective that is both practical and human. Victor began his career in IT on the help desk, where he daily witnessed poor design and helped customers overcome it. Progressing to system administrator, he learned how networks, servers, and websites actually work by building them. Transitioning to become an interface designer, he worked for a decade contributing to more than 40 software and Internet products for organizations such as General Electric, Cisco, J.P. Morgan, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. He's coached teams at Reed Elsevier and Rodale through the entire product development process, and helped turn around a failing media business at Fox Mobile Group through the development of a new web platform and mobile apps.
