world consumer rights day march 15th
Consumers International is the membership organisation for consumer groups around the world. Founded on 1 April 1960, it has over 250 member organisations in 120 countries. Its head office is based in London, England, with regional officers in Latin America, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Consumers International is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, company number 04337865 and registered charity number 1122155. The organisation was first established in 1960 as the International Organisation of Consumers Unions (IOCU) by national consumer organisations who wanted to create cross-border campaigns and share knowledge. IOCU was founded by Elizabeth Schadee, who would later chair the board of the Netherlands' Consumentenbond, and Caspar Brook, who was the first director of the United Kingdom's Consumers' Association. The two proposed an international conference to plan for consumer product testing organisations worldwide to work more closely together. The United States organization Consumers Union provided US$10,000 at the request of Colston Warne to help fund the event. In January 1960, these three organisations sponsored the First International Conference on Consumer Testing in The Hague. Thirty-four people representing seventeen consumer organisations in fourteen countries attended to discuss product testing and founding the International Organisation of Consumers Unions as an international organisation. Belgium's Association des Consommateurs and the Australian Consumers' Association joined the three conference sponsors as the five founding organisations who became the international organisation's initial council.

How to Test a Value Proposition or New Product Ideas with Customers – Outside In
So how do we test our value proposition with customers well. We take our value proposition essentially the key parts that our customer facing the insight. • This is your problem • The benefit this is • What we propose the reason to believe • This is how you should believe we're going to deliver it • The discriminator this is what makes us better We put it onto a single piece of paper which I would call the product or solution concept and we take that into the customer and we show it to them and we ask them for their input we may have multiple different product concepts depending on different insights or benefits that we think or it may be that we flex the way that we're going to solve the problem but we keep the insight and the benefit constant. The advantage of putting it in front of the customer is that they may say to us • I don't understand it • That's not clear well • They may say I do understand it I just don't need it • They might say I do need it but I don't believe That way is the correct way to solve it the power of qualitatively refining your concepts. Value proposition is that when you move on to the next step which is to quantitatively test it you've guaranteed that what you're putting into that test is the best possible articulation of the idea and then quantitative validation simply allows you to check that a substantial number of your customers share the same view of • What is the best value proposition • What is the best articulation • What is the best solution When you're armed with that you'll find it much easier to share it with your organization and align them behind the activity that needs to follow in my experience inviting the rest of your colleagues to view those customer interactions might even speed the process up further much better to say to them you know when we all saw the customer and they really liked that route. It's so much easier than saying I saw the customer and I'm telling you to abandon your idea because they're not interested in it they didn't like it I showed it to them they weren't interested Wouldn’t it be much better to approach this as a multifunctional approach and everybody who needs to align behind it should hear the customer discuss the value proposition together. CECED's Vacuum Cleaners Testing Workshop, July 2016
http://www.ceced.eu @CECED_Europe Product testing – an important part of bringing home appliances into Europe’s single market. Manufacturers, consumers, NGOs, Member States, market surveillance authorities and laboratory experts gathered to discuss how to improve test methods for vacuum cleaners. The workshop took place at the VDE laboratory, near Frankfurt. The objective – to discuss how current standards for appliances such as vacuum cleaners can take more into account consumer use while simultaneously respecting the need for reproducibility and repeatability of results. Product testing can always be brought closer to consumer behaviour. However, this should not increase the complexity of testing. The event also included real life laboratory test demonstration. A 3rd CECED organized workshop on this topic this time for washing machines will be held on 3rd of November 2016. The work goes on...

Why Orig3n Says It Won't Sell Customer Consumer Genetic Data
There's massive money to be made in the direct-to-consumer genetics business-and a lot of it hinges the value of the data that DNA companies curate. Orig3n offers such tests, ranging from novelties like $29 "Caffeine Tolerance" or "Superhero" tests up to more expensive and serious nutrition and wellness kits. But that's just Orig3n's side hustle. The company sells those tests to "offset the burn" while it works on complex cell therapies. And it remains profitable without selling anyone's data. "We've been asked many times to sell this data, to do business deals with other organizations, but we really believe that people should be in control of their own information," Robin Smith, CEO and co-founder of the company, told Healthcare Analytics News™ this week during a conversation at HLTH in Las Vegas, Nevada. "We're the only DNA company on the planet that won't sell genetic information. We cordon that data off, it's encrypted, we deliver the information only to the person that's buying the product, and we pride ourselves in that," he said. For Smith, it's a point of principle. Recent data breaches underscore the dangers of sharing data with other partners-he pointed to Facebook's Cambridge Analytica fiasco as an example. "I'm very concerned about that happening in a company like ours, because genetic information is extremely personal," the CEO said. Although the CEO said he'd have no problem sharing his own genetic information, even if there was something embarrassing in there, he doesn't think his testing provider should be making those decisions for others. And besides, he added, Orig3n doesn't have a need to do that anyway. "We end up building a profitable business even around our $29 tests. We've developed our own technology, our own algorithms, our own automation, so our company owns that stack. We don't feel pressure from a financial standpoint to have to go sell it to make ends meet," he said. "I think it's the right thing to do, and we keep trying to push that message and that approach."

Home Electronics Lab
Building a home hobby electronics lab. The components and accessories a serious home electronics person might need and one spec'd using a better grade of entry levels components. You can start with less than this but if you're serious about electronics you're probably going to need more-or-less what I have but you can start with less and build as you go. In addition to the major components I discuss the ancillary items needed -- things like power and signal cables to connect things, work tables and lighting, storage for equipment accessories and parts and the various hand tools and other tools one will need. I also discuss some issues relating to safety and what you might do to get a better grounding in safety. So, I hope that what I've done can be of some use to you in setting up or rearranging your electrons lab. Again, this is more of an entry level lab setup but some folks are light years beyond this. Consumer Reports Hearing Aid Buying Guide Detailed Review
Consumer Reports Hearing Aids Buying Guide Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, provides commentary on the Consumer Reports Hearing Aids Buying Guide. Website: https://www.AppliedHearingAZ.com Consumer Reports Hearing Aids Buying Guide: https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/hearing-aids/buying-guide/index.htm Consumer Reports is a non-profit organization that has been around since the 1930s. Their reviews are based on conducting in-house testing and surveys. The Buyers Guide discusses the prevalence of hearing loss with 48 million Americans experiencing some form of hearing loss. They also discuss the three types of hearing loss: Sensorineural, Conductive, and Mixed Hearing Loss. Understanding hearing aids discusses digital hearing aid technology and Analog devices. Despite Analog hearing aids being less complex than digital devices, digital devices are still easy to use. There are different features in hearing aids such as Wind noise reduction, Background noise reduction, and Bluetooth. The variations in devices can make identifying the best device very difficult. The Guide does give some incorrect information on the different hearing aid styles and Cons of these styles. Thy shoudl state that in general, there are 2 different styles: In-The-Ear (ITE) and Behind-The-Ear (BTE). There are several substyles within these. Discussing hearing aid features the report indicates that 33% of their survey respondents reported multiple hearing aid programs to be the most important feature. Other features included: Telecoil - A feature that communicates with a hearing loop to pull information from a telephone or public facilities that have a loop. This will give you better access to audio from these locations. Directional Microphones: These help hearing aids perform better in background noise by allowing these microphones to communicate with each other to determine which direction to pick up sound. Feedback Suppression: This helps prevent whistling of hearing aids, particularly with an open fit. Digital Noise Reduction: This allows hearing aids to remove noise from speech to improve speech understanding in background noise. Other Features: Include Bluetooth connectivity and Remote Microphones with are extremely beneficial for use with the telephone and in background noise. Selecting a Hearing Care Provider starts with a recommendation to see an Audiologist. Audiologists can be found in private practice settings and Wholesale clubs like Costco Hearing Centers. They do mention that you should ask if the hearing care provider is an Audiologist or Hearing Instrument Specialist. Both can dispense, but there is a disparity in training between the two professionals. Audiologists have to earn a doctorate degree in audiology and obtain over 1,000 clinical contact hours, and Hearing Instrument Specialist training varies widely and in some states requires no formal training. The guide does go over what you should expect from a hearing care provider. This includes convenient hours with repair services, a detailed consultation to determine your specific needs, and the necessity of seeing your hearing care professional regularly. Overall, the quality of your hearing aid performance directly depends on how good your hearing care provider is. Some shopping tips from the guide include: 1. Checking your insurance coverage. 2. Getting a detailed contract that allows for hearing aid returns in the case that you don't receive benefit. 3. Only buy what you need. There is no need to overspend on features that are unnecessary for your lifestyle. 4. Asking for a price break. Be careful with this one as the clinics that haggle are often the ones that will reduce your quality of care. 5. Look for bargains. Again, you usually get what you pay for. Focus too much on a bargain and you could find yourself receiving little benefit with hearing aids. 6. Getting social assistance. There are programs like Starkey HearNow that will help you obtain hearing aids for free if you meet low income requirements. When getting new hearing aids, the most important thing is that you have Real Ear Measurement performed on them. This is the only way to ensure your devices are programmed appropriately to your hearing loss prescription. These are NOT hearing aids, but can provide a boost to your hearing. Just be careful, the cheap ones can actually make you hear worse and can even damage your ears. Overall, the Consumer Electronics Hearing Aids Buying Guide, despite some inaccuracies, provides a good basic level understanding of hearing aids and treatment options.

Business Consulting —The Business Value of Trust — Cognizant
Consumer trust has become the new battleground for digital success. To win, organizations need to master the fundamentals of data ethics, manage the “give-to-get” ratio and solve the customer trust equation, our recent research reveals. Download the whitepaper: http://cogniz.at/trustYT Subscribe to our channel: http://cogniz.at/subscribeyt Learn about Cognizant digital strategies: http://goo.gl/B3VPqL Transcript: Data is the foundation of trust and changing how we perceive companies with which we interact, and transact. In fact, the data that these companies gather has changed not only the way they deliver products and services, but also the way we make purchase decisions. We surveyed over 2,000 consumers across Asia Pacific and the Middle East to understand the factors that influence their trust. They told us that this is value that they associate with trust and how they react when the trust is broken. Trust is the new currency and return on trust is the new business performance indicator. More than half of the consumers we surveyed are willing to pay a premium for a product and services from companies they trust more. In fact, they do not draw strong line between privacy and security. For them, it is the ethical behavior of how companies treat their data that matters most. Our research uncovered two primary elements impacting the value of consumer trust. The first is aggressive data monetization strategy is a recipe for disaster. 75% of consumers we surveyed feel that companies are accessing their personal information that they did not explicitly provide. Roughly, 60% of them will stop doing business with a company that has broken their trust. Second, broken trust can break a business, brand and undermine loyalty. The bad news is that, no industry we studied perceived as highly trustworthy. Only 43% of consumers we surveyed trust companies fully and nearly 40% plan to switch to the competition or to a digital startup due to the trust issues. In fact, digital startups are winning the consumer trust better. The reason, they are perceived as being more trustworthy the way they treat our personal data compared with established companies. So, how can you turn trust issues into your biggest asset? Our research highlights two primary moves companies can make to win in the digital economy. The first is by walking the talk. Many companies believe that they have done their job by publishing data privacy and security policies, but more than half of consumers we surveyed told us that making sense of these policies is nearly impossible. Communication is a two-way street. So, merely stating your organization's policy and then hiding behind the law will not create a sustainable level of trust. Our study indicates that transparency is the top factor upsetting a company's trustworthiness. 45% of consumers we surveyed are willing to share their personal data, if a company asks upfront and clearly states how the data will be used. The second is by showing the value of trust. As consumers become more educated about how a company's using their data, they want a personal, tangible and image of benefit and return. 70% of consumers we surveyed see a tremendous value in the data and half of those are willing to share it with companies in exchange for some form of value. We call this the give-to-get ration and managing this straight off transparently is essential to rust to grow, and for the companies to succeed. The biggest threat to companies today is not from competition, but from their ability to win and keep consumer trust. In the coming years, we have won't to hear more businesses suffer financial and repetitional damage due to trust issues as the virtual economy expanse. Companies that you trust not just as privacy, security or technology issue but a brand building opportunity and place consumers before profits and self-interest will be best equipped to sail through the choppy waters of trust driven business disruption. Learn more about how to master the additional economy fundamentals of data ethics, the give-to-get ratio and the consumer trust equation, but checking out our new study findings. Measuring Adversary Costs to Exploit Commercial Software...
by Mudge & Sarah Zatko Many industries, provide consumers with data about the quality, content, and cost of ownership of products, but the software industry leaves consumers with very little data to act upon. In fact when it comes to how secure or weak a product is from a security perspective, there is no meaningful consumer facing data. There has long been a call for the establishment of an independent organization to address this need. Last year, Mudge (from DARPA, Google, and L0pht fame) announced that after receiving a phone call from the White House he was leaving his senior position inside Google to create a non-profit organization to address this issue. This effort, known as CITL, is akin to Consumer Reports in its methodologies. While the media has dubbed it a "CyberUL", there is no focus on certifications or seals of approval, and no opaque evaluation metrics. Rather, like Consumer Reports, the goal is to evaluate software according to metrics and measurements that allow quantitative comparison and evaluation by anyone from a layperson, CFO, to security expert. How? A wide range of heuristics that attackers use to identify which targets are hard or soft against new exploitation has been codified, refined, and enhanced. Some of these techniques are quite straightforward and even broadly known, while others are esoteric tradecraft. To date, no one has applied all of these metrics uniformly across an entire software ecosystem before and shared the results. For the first time, a peak at the Cyber Independent Testing Lab's metrics, methodologies, and preliminary results from assessing the software quality and inherent vulnerability in over 100,000 binary applications on Windows, Linux, and OS X will be revealed. All accomplished with binaries only. Sometimes the more secure product is actually the cheaper, and quite often the security product is the most vulnerable. There are plenty of surprises like these that are finally revealed through quantified measurements. With this information, organizations and consumers can finally make informed purchasing decisions when it comes the security of their products, and measurably realize more hardened environments. Insurance groups are already engaging CITL, as are organizations focused on consumer safety. Vendors will see how much better or worse their products are in comparison to their competitors. Even exploit developers have demonstrated that these results enable bug-bounty arbitrage. That recommendation you made to your family members last holiday about which web browser they should use to stay safe (or that large purchase you made for your industrial control systems)? Well, you can finally see if you chose a hard or soft target… with the data to back it up.

CPS_2013_Solvit (Original) Safety Harness Crash Test_Catastrophic Demonstration_Large
In 2013, Center for Pet Safety performed independent crash testing of safety harnesses to determine crashworthiness. 75# Crash Test Dog (No real dogs were used for testing.) This test was conducted to illustrate the crash protection offered by a product that would be considered a Distracted Driving Tether. The manufacturer did not claim testing. The manufacturer did not claim crash protection. The data returned from this test was not used - it is simply an illustrative test of crash protection that would be offered by most of the safety harnesses where the manufacturer makes no claims of testing. Designing Systems for People
About the Presentation Today's consumer technology market has evolved in complexity and interconnectedness at an ever-increasing rate. As these products and services become increasingly intertwined, the opportunity for overwhelming the people that use them has heightened tremendously. As a result of this situation, the importance of "user experience" design has risen in the eyes of most organizations. However, many of these same organizations continue to produce poorly designed products or complicated service experiences because they fail to understand that great experience design does not come from an isolated design stage, but from a fully integrated design and engineering process that elevates user experience. The difference is subtle but significant. The difference is systems thinking. This webinar presents a systems-based, design-centric framework for producing great product or service experiences. It will demonstrate the importance of this type of approach for understanding markets, developing concepts, providing vision, managing uncertainty, crafting requirements, creating prototypes, and testing new markets. About the Speaker Todd Reily (SDM '10) has over a decade of experience in the public and private sector in roles that range from internal support to consulting, as a designer or design lead, in activities including behavioral research, conceptual user experience animations, and interactive prototypes. He has consulted on design projects for the most prominent organizations in the consumer product, pharmaceutical, financial services, and defense industries. Reily is currently pursuing a master's of science in engineering and management on a part-time basis in MIT's System Design and Management program. Reily is applying his skills in user experience design and engineering psychology to the principles of system design in an effort to develop innovative methods in product and system development. Reily also holds a BS in engineering psychology from Tufts University. While at Tufts, Reily served as president of the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society and received the De Florez Prize in Human Engineering. Reily's full-time professional role is as a lead human factors engineer at The MITRE Corporation, a federally funded not-for-profit research and development center based in Bedford, MA. Reily's primary responsibility is to support MITRE's customers by identifying human-based issues and addressing them with design-driven solutions and innovative user experience designs. Prior to MITRE, Reily was a lead usability analyst at Human Factors International, the world's oldest and largest usability and design consulting firm. In that role, Reily consulted for high-profile clients in a range of industries, from home and entertainment to enterprise and financial services.
