Cook Islands Dance London
With the world's attention focused on London this year, Cook Islands Tourism kicked off their European Roadshow 2012 with a selection of staged dance performances yesterday around nine major London landmarks. The dancers braved the cold weather and performed in iconic sites across London, including Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St Paul's Cathedral and Piccadilly Circus. This was the first time many of the dancers had visited the UK, with some having never left the Cook Islands before. The group consist of eight dancers and four drummers, who have all been selected through a national audition process as well as a team of four management members. The performers range from 11 year olds to over 50 and the group includes one Male Dance Leader, one Female Dance Leader and a Band Master. Accompanied by the rhythmic beat of the drum, the women dance with a swaying hip movement that slowly goes from side to side, trying to keep their shoulders as still as possible, whereas the men dance with slightly bent knees, which they knock together in time to the drum beat. Cook Islands Tattoos. Body Art Expo 2013 -- Winner of the Large Black & Grey category.
This is a slideshow of the winning entry in the Large Black and Grey category: Body Art Expo 2013, Vancouver, Washington State. U.S.A. The work is largely Cook Islands tattoos with some contributions from the Marquesas and Samoa. Cook Islands tattoos share many common elements with the rest of Polynesia and to the casual eye, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Cook Island and New Zealand tattoos look much the same; however, to Polynesians and those with a keen visual and artistic sense, there are clear differences, and while the art from one part of Polynesia may influence the evolution of the art in another island group, each retains a clear identity that reflects the history, art and culture of the te tangata fenua -- the people of the land. For this piece, the Primary Artist was Stormy Kara of Pacific Ink Polynesian Tattoo. Rarotonga, Cook Islands and Palmerston North, New Zealand. Apart from two very small early pieces, all of this work was freehand - no transfers or detailed drawing of the designs -- occasionally a couple of guide marks to keep the design centred, but otherwise just inked on. The knees were done in by Suluape Paulo Junior in Apia, Samoa using traditional tatatau, the rest was done with a tattoo gun. The great majority of the work was done in Rarotonga, Cook Islands with the thighs and chest collar by T's Tattoos. The collar on the back was by Varii Huuti, a Marquesan Artist working in Papeete, The rest -- upper thighs, back, front and sides and arms -- was done by Stormy Kara of Pacific Ink Polynesian Tattoo in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. As of November 2013 Stormy is attending College in Palmerston North, New Zealand and tattooing there. Tattoo has experienced a huge resurgence in the Cooks in the last decade with many Cook Islanders, both men and women, proudly wearing visible tattoos. The number of artists tattooing on island has also increased dramatically with some truly outstanding work being done -- particularly by "Mr. T" -- Tetini Pekopo of T's Tattoos in Aroa and Clive Nicholas of Polynesian Tattoo, and by Stormy Kara of Pacific Ink Polynesian Tattoo when she is on-island. The Cook Islands are at the centre of the Polynesian Triangle of the South Pacific. A group of 15 TINY islands set like jewels in some 2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean. The largest island, Rarotonga, is the centre of government, home to under 10,000 people, and is is six miles -- 10 kilometres -- in diameter. It is the stereotypical tropical paradise with a core of ancient volcanoes covered with intense green cloud forest, circled by deserted beaches of brilliant white coral sand, a calm aquamarine lagoon, and a coral reef that reverberates with the thunder of the Pacific surf.

Cook Islands Tourism & Turquoise Holidays
Cook Islands Tourism Partners with Turquoise Holidays For 2012 European Roadshow Cook Islands Tourism (CIT) is kicking off its 2012 European Roadshow in London on the 14th May, after performing at the Queens Diamond Jubilee Pageant at Windsor Castle. CIT and industry members will be hosting a range of events, including a performance by traditional Cook Island dancers at local schools in Beaconsfield, in partnership with luxury tour operator Turquoise Holidays. The group travelling from the Cook Islands to the UK, will consist of eight dancers and four drummers, who have all been selected through a national audition process, as well as a team of four management members. The performers range from 11 year olds to over 50 and the group also includes one Male Dance Leader, one Female Dance Leader and a Band Master. Cook Islands Tourism and Turquoise Holidays have partnered to showcase the unique culture of this Commonwealth destination and educate youngsters on the islands' heritage, by holding dance performances at local Beaconsfield Schools including, High March School and Davenies School. This will also include a consumer event held at Turquoise Holiday's offices, featuring cocktails and a performance from the dance troupe. Cook Islands song and dance is very much at the heart of the Cook Islands culture, dating back thousands of years with many of the dances based on ancient stories that tell a tale of love or adventure. Accompanied by the rhythmic beat of the drum, the women dance with a swaying hip movement that slowly goes from side to side, trying to keep their shoulders as still as possible, whereas the men dance with slightly bent knees, which they knock together in time with the drum beat. The dancers wear traditional costumes, comprising of skirts, which are worn by both men and women, made from cotton material or bark cloth covered with grass, long green leaves and dried bark strips. These are often adorned with shells, seeds, bright leaves and colourful flowers. ENDEAVOUR TV

Where Men Cook! || NAS Daily in Seychelles ||
Show this to every man and woman in the world! Because this is how people live in the Seychelles. At least when it comes to cooking, men and women are participating in the process. It's beautiful. I'm not sure how gender roles are outside of the house, so this video scope is not about that. But I do know that Seychelles is a matriarchal society. INSTAGRAM: @NasDaily GROUP: Nas Daily Global #NasDaily #NuseirYassin Thank you to the beautiful Seychelles family for helping me with this video. It was very fun and very tasty! Maybe I need to learn how to cook after this. Cook Islands International Rugby Sevens 2012
http://www.rarolens.com - Sevens in Heaven, the Cook Islands annual international rugby sevens tournament, took place in November 2012 with sixteen men's teams taking part. No female teams this time but organisers are hoping for a women's section in 2013. Plenty of on-field action and there were fancy dress, goal-kicking and dash-for-cash competitions as well as entertainment by the local zumba fraternity (or should that be sorority).

Trouble in Paradise – Nutritional Challenges in the Cook Islands
The Cook Islands are located in the South Pacific Ocean about 3,000 kilometres to the North East of New Zealand. White sandy beaches and clear lagoons attract over 130,000 tourists a year, providing work for islanders and accounting for as much as 90% of the state’s economy. Land once used for agriculture is now being used for luxury resorts and holiday cottages. The islands used to export bananas and pineapples, but now the nation is 82% food import dependent, relying on weekly flights from New Zealand and cargo delivered by boat. Western style fast-food outlets have also arrived, where islanders spend their wages provided by the tourist industry. But as tourism has blossomed, so has obesity, such that in 2012, Ministry of Health research found a staggering 88% of men were overweight or obese.
