That’s because we’re adept at recognizing patterns, not just in how things look, but how they interact with one another. In Magic, we often see recurring themes and patterns in how certain decks play out, and how they interact not just with your opponent, but the board state as well. We call these archetypes, because we see them come up in almost every format again and again like an old friend, or in some cases, an old nemesis. By labeling these different deck archetypes, we can understand what a deck is trying to do just by hearing the name of it. If I say “Red Deck Wins”, you know this deck is focused on a Aggro strategy, has no Control elements, and uses cards like lightning bolt and goblin guide. It immediately tells you what the deck is trying to do, and how going about it. In this episode, we’ll be exploring the three primary types of deck archetypes we see in Magic: The Gathering: Aggro, Control and Combo. We’ll talk about their strengths, their weaknesses, and how to evaluate cards to build these archetypes in both Limited and Constructed. Which of these archetypes should I play? This depends on the format, and also on the timing. If you’re looking for a good win rate, the best time to play an Aggro strategy is usually right after a set comes out in Standard. Because the format is still being in some ways “figured out”, being proactive and focusing on just killing your opponent is an effective way of getting those early wins. Once a format becomes more defined, it’s easier to build a Control deck to beat what other people are doing, which is usually at the end before the next set is released, or before rotation. Combo is sprinkled throughout the lifespan of a format sometimes, when and if there is a good busted combo in a Control deck. If people are playing a lot of Aggro decks, then it’s a good time to do one of those Engine decks, as long as it’s fast and can kill by turn 5 if there isn’t interaction. But honestly, the real answer to this question is: any of them you want! What is amazing about Magic: the Gathering as a game is its flexibility. You can express yourself through gameplay in almost any way you might wish. I love my Modern Merfolk deck, and no matter how it’s doing in the meta, I’ll continue to play it, regardless of what other people think. For you that might be your Cat tribal Standard deck, your Burn deck, or even 8 Rack. Whatever you choose, follow your bliss and fine tune it to the best of your ability. Different people play Magic differently, and in that lies the inherent beauty and freedom of the game. What do I mean by draft archetypes? In draft, you construct a 40 card deck using cards you pick during that draft. There are always a collection of commonly drafted archetypes, such as in Shadows over Innistrad there was an often drafted Black / Green delirium deck and a Blue Green clue deck. Or how in Battle for Zendikar there was a landfall deck, and an ally deck, and so forth. Battle Decks take this basic premise, and create a 60 card version of that deck, sometimes even using cards from older sets that will work effectively to serve that deck’s theme or needs. As a result, Battle Decks are kind of like a Limited Constructed deck: a 60 card full version of a 40 card draft deck. With the now discontinued intro packs, the goal was to provide a weak deck that could then be upgraded using booster packs, a goal that was seldom met in a satisfactory fashion. But Battle decks are already strong for what they are, and unlike Intro Packs, they contain 3-4 of their cards, instead of 1-3X, meaning that you get consistent gameplay and feel like you are playing a real game of Magic. As a result, Battle deck are well-designed, heavily themed, and play really well against one another. And quick too! No 5 hour long game of EDH to slog through. Battle Decks play like really, really strong draft decks. They are what Intro Packs always should have been: full, complete, powerful and REAL decks of Magic that can be purchased cheap and effectively and allow you to get instant games of Magic. While these may not have anything in the way of financial value, the deck construction and interplay is excellent, and a far better experience than most of the other preconstructed decks Wizards of the Coast floods your local game store with. While these are NOT of any interest to Standard players, they are the ideal product for new players, returning players, and casual players, for anyone looking for a fast, fun time playing Magic.

Once the star jewel of Wizards of the Coast, this years’ line has had a significant shakeup in both price and contents, begging the question more so than ever if if the now 40.00 price tag for this once perfect product is still worth, and if so, by how much? Is this price part of a plan for providing players with powerful commander cards, new and old, or just callously cashing in on a popular product? Do not pay above MSRP for any 2018 Commander decks, period. If you can get any preconstructed decks from previous years for the same or near cost, do so instead. If all you want is Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow to build a kick ass ninja deck, then buy the singles you need. This video is mainly aimed at beginners and focuses on some basic concepts (but not all as Magic is incredibly deep) that are required for building a deck for those who are starting out in Magic for their first time. Please Subscribe! Want More Magic Goodness? Check Our SEQUEL! Top 5 Tips For Building A Strong Magic The Gathering Deck At Your Next Prerelease for BEGINNERS & NEWBIES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkjuVM-s6s8 Magic: The Gathering is a Collectable Trading Card Game where players take on the role of Planeswalkers as they build customisable decks that consist of creatures, spells, instants, sorceries, enchantments, planeswalkers and artifacts and battle each other until one player claims ultimate victory. Players battle each other using their decks in a range of various playable formats including Standard, Modern, Limited, Legacy, Commander, EDH, Sealed, Constructed, Drafting and for Casual Play. A typical deck is usually composed of a minimum of 60 cards (100 for Commander). It is a game about building the best decks, exploring card combos and synergy. Over recent years, Wizards of the Coast have introduced some very cool Planeswalkers through the mythos and story arcs from each block in MTG (Magic: The Gathering) including Jace, Liliana, Chandra, Gideon, Elspeth, Nissa, Garruk, Ob Nixilus, Kiora, Saheeli, Tezzeret and many more. Each block (eg. Kaladesh / Aether Revolt / Ahmonkhet, Hour of Devastation / Ixalan) in Magic the Gathering is comprised on two sets that work together in narrative flavour and mechanics. What’s more, most of these commander decks contain a vast array of cards that have respectable financial value, or just are commander staples which makes upgrading the decks or building new commander decks using the pieces of these an acceptable and easy path for the player. Best of all, while power levels between the decks do vary, I maintain that there is no wrong answer when it comes to these commander precons. WHich one should I buy is a question i answer often with “Which one do you like the look and feel of? You can’t go wrong.” And I want to repeat that: You can’t go wrong. But still I am asked which are the best of the best, and so presented here are the top 5 commander decks you can purchase, based on power right out of the box. Note, these top 5 are all selling for above MSRP, some by a little, one by a lot, and I still encourage you to scour your local game stores and even online sellers to find those sweet deals of commander decks at 29 even 24.99 each, an amazing value every one of them. And with the Commander’s Anthology coming out in just a week, an expensive product with 4 of the classic commander decks in it plus a few other goodies, I thought I’d give a copy away to a subscriber. So if you’d like a free, brand new copy of the commander’s anthology all you have to do is be subscribed to this channel for a chance to win! Your local game store holds Magic: The Gathering events from Friday Night Magic to the Standard Showdown to other in store events throughout the week. For new and returning players, attending these events has often been difficult, as booster packs are designed with the draft format in mind and not constructed, thus buying tons of booster packs to crack in order to build a competitive Friday Night Magic standard deck has never been an easy, affordable or even successful strategy. The only alternative, however, has been downloading decklists and buying singles to build a complete deck from scratch. An expensive option considering Standard decks usually run in the hundreds of dollars, if not more. Challenger Decks seek to offer what has never before been done: a self-contained, preconstructed standard deck which can be bought at an affordable price and played effectively and competitively at Friday Night Magic or other in store events, right out of the box. At an MSRP of 29.99, these challenger decks would need to offer quite a lot to new and returning players interested in them. Do they rise to the challenge? Let’s take a look! Now, For The Record, Wizards has attempted products like this before, most notably with the long running product line of Event Decks. But, as my own reviews cover if you are curious on the details, Event Decks were almost always terrible right out of the box, technically playable at FNM but not something that put up much of, if any of a fight. A new or returning player using an event deck would likely end up in last place, and many times did not even have a framework from which to build a competitive deck. Event Decks were jank, containing 1-2 copies of largely unplayed cards, never mythics and never value. Now, one criticism many of my videos have had in the past is an over emphasis on the importance of financial value in products such as these. My answer to that is simple: when products of the past such as Event Decks were so terrible, so unplayable at an event, so failing in the very thing they were designed to do, then all there is left to look at is financial value. In the case of challenger decks, everyone is talking about financial value because these contain mythics, and playsets and playsets of mythics, but for me, i don’t care. I do not care one bit about whether the sum total of the individual cards within these 29.99 decks are worth 60, 80 or even 10 dollars each. I will still look at financial value, but what matters here is the degree to which these are playable out of the box at Friday Night Magic.

Planeswalker Decks! Getting Started with Magic the Gathering

10:57
You guys ask me all the time what product to get started with magic. 1) download the game "Magic duels" on ipad, steam, or elsewhere to learn the rules 2) get either a deckbuilders toolkit and/or some 'planeswalker' intro decks for kaladesh and start from there. 3) find a friend and play that's the best way to get started!

But I want to take a detailed look at this product and see what it was all about. First and foremost these decks are a great celebration of their respective champions. Not only is each card gold bordered, but each and every card is stamped in gold and silver with the autographs of the pro who brought that deck all the way to the finals of the championships. I’ve never been an avid follower of the pro scene, but I do admire the symbolic accolades of these decks. The signature is a lovely touch, one that gets even a casual like me interested in the players who piloted these decks to victory. Each competitor's release included their 60-card deck and 15-card sideboard, 12 blank proxy cards, and cards with a printed deck list, a biography of the player, and an overview of the four decks release for their respective year. But the thing I love most about these world championship decks is the fact that they are meant to be played. What a thrill to be able to sit down and play a champion’s deck against the decks of other champions from that years’ top 8 of worlds! This video will examine what Planeswalker Decks are, what they contain, what purpose they serve, and who they are for. Although this video will use as its examples and illustrations the Amonkhet Planeswalker Decks, unless significant changes are made to the product, it can be applied to future decks as well. Please Note: This video is intended as a guide to the product for brand new Magic the gathering players. For a more detailed and critical analysis from the Perspective of an active Magic player, be sure to check out my “Is It Worth It” video for Planeswalker Decks linked in this video’s description. What Is A Planeswalker Deck? Planeswalker Decks are a product intended to teach brand new players the basic strategy of magic the gathering, the game's settings, its characters, and to simply provide that very first 60 card deck to begin their Magic journey with. These decks are for one person and one person only: brand new players with no or perhaps almost no Magic cards whatsoever. They are meant as a first purchase and a first deck. Again, the analogy of training wheels is one I feel is most apt. In conclusion, Planeswalker Decks are an acceptable first purchase for a brand new Magic player, however they are far from a vital one. They can make a gift for a younger player just getting into the game, and they can serve as a beginner’s deck for fun and practice, but there’s a lot of other options out there, including Deckbuilder’s Toolkits, Rookie and Battle Decks, And Simply Attending a prerelease. Speaking critically, once a brand new player has purchased one Planeswalker Deck, they have no need to ever do so again. Established players do not ever need to purchase a Planeswalker Deck. Again, my more detailed critical analysis from the Perspective of an active player can be found in my “Is It Worth It” video for Planeswalker Decks linked in this video’s description.

Zombies is resilient. While not the fastest deck (it is firmly in the midrange camp) it can recover from removal rather easily. Zombies thrives in metagames rife with creature decks. It can take them out rather effectively while also establishing a board state where your Shepherds and Polluters will win the game in short order. If you’re looking for something different and something that is sure to get new cards every few years, you can look into Zombies. Let’s take a look!

Deck Building For Beginners - Magic: The Gathering Arena ( MTG Arena )

10:17
What's goen on Malakies! Vnncz3 here and I'd like to firstly admit that I'm not a pro at this game nor do I ever claim to be. I do on the other hand feel like I have enough experience at the game to enable me to teach other people how to play the game and how to get better as a player. This video will be a beginners guide on how to build a deck that will actually work. I'm not going to promise you that you're going to win every match after watching this video. Instead, i'll promise that your win percentage will drastically go up as you master deck building as a whole regardless if the deck your using or going up against is net decked or brewed up. Before we get into the deck building guide i'd like to give you some advise that will even further more help you become a better player. Losing is part of the game. Understanding the "why" you lost is so much more important than telling yourself the "If" And what I mean by that is, phrases like "Only if I had 1 more land" Or "If I went first" The Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda, Approach will substantially stunt your growth as a player. Alrighty lets get into it. Some Questions you need to ask yourself is what Archetype you want to build what mana base do you need to support your archetype and finally whats your sideboard plan looking like? You have a choice between, Aggro, Control, Or Midrange. Building your mana base should be a main concern when deck building because you can't cast spells without the proper amount of mana. Mono Color decks usually have a much easier mana base to build then say a 2 or 3 color decks. In a 2 or 3 color decks you typically want your mana base to be able to provide 12 to 16 types of each mana source in it depending on how dominant the colors are. if it's just a 1 or 2 card splash then these numbers are way to high. You can achieve this by using dual lands and other types of nonbasic lands. In mono color decks you generally want 18 or more lands that produce the same mana you need to cast your spells and if youd like to fill in the rest of your lands with utility lands then that's quite alright.* I'll go into the gameplan of each archetype in a nutshell. Aggros gameplan is to get and stay ahead on the board until you win. You should almost never give up tempo for card advantag, because you dont really intend on playing into the late game. Midrange has a gameplan of adapt and overcome. Midrange isn't aggro nor is it control. Infact it's a bit of both put together. Your spells and creatures are generally really powerful so that they generate a large amount of value. Controls gameplan is to shut down your opponents gameplan by dismantling it with various removal and permission cards and then winning at it's convenience. Building a sideboard is a very tricky thing. You typically want to aim your sideboard against your bad and mirror matchups. What cards to add is entirely up to you but you should always keep your decks main plan in mind when building a sideboard. Just as an example. It doesn't make a lot of sense to add 15 creatures in a control players sideboard. The main goal of a control deck is to do exactly that. Control. but it doesn't hurt you to add a few creatures to your sideboard provided they go along with your plan or there used specifically against your really bad matchups. Lets look at a few net decks that have been proven to be successfull and then we'll build a deck of our own based off of what we have seen. I've been playing Magic: The Gathering (MTG) for a very long time (like 15+ years) and I'm absolutely loving Magic: The Gathering Arena (MTG Arena) because standard is my favorite format to play. The other formats are just to stale for me because they rarely ever change so I'm just not a fan of them. Also, the other formats are either combo or counter spell. Rarely do you ever get an honest match like you do in standard and I'm not a fan of that sort of meta.

Retro MTG Reviews -The Premium Deck Series of Magic: The Gathering

09:27
Other RETRO MTG Reviews-- The Reaper / Scry Pewter Life Counter: https://youtu.be/iTgHkNuAD64 World Championship Decks: https://youtu.be/fvZ42zhtnhY Support The Professor - Patreon -https://www.patreon.com/tolariancommunitycollege TCC Shirts! Playmats! - http://www.tolariancommunitycollege.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TolarianCollege FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/TolarianCommunityCollege The year was 2009. Original Zendikar had the MTG nation digging an adventure based plane, and also digging for buried treasure. Worldwake had not yet been released, and Standard players went about their lives, unaware of the horrors about to unfold. And a brand new product from Wizards of the coast was released, a 60 card preconstructed theme deck of Legacy-legal cards, all foils or as Wizards of the Coast calls them, premium cards. It was the first of the very short lived Premium Deck Series, a product that lasted only three decks before going out with a whimper, discontinued due to a lack of interest and profitability. Head Magic Designer Mark Rosewater closing words on the series, which have become like words on the Premium Deck Series Tombstone were simply, "not enough of you loved it." But I want to take a detailed look at the product, and see what it was all about. First and foremost, these decks had value. The sets retailed for $34.99, and for that price, provided players with quite a lot of value. Not just because they contained all foil cards, but because they actually printed a very large selection of cards that saw play in Legacy, Modern, and Commander formats. In fact, each of the premium decks had a strong selection of cards for each of those formats. I’m going to start at the end, with the last and, some say, the best of the premium deck series: Graveborn. Graveborn was released shortly after Innistrad, and out of the 60 foil cards, a whopping 7 of them were rares, and one was a mythic rare. Not just rares, but many cards that saw play and were in need of reprints, even at the common and uncommon level. Two of the gems in Graveborn were actually uncommons, the cards Entomb and Cabal Therapy. At the time, these two cards alone were worth the MSRP of 34.99, and continue to be so even today, although Graveborn now goes for more than double its initial price tag. All the cards were foil, printed in the modern card frame. Animate dead, Crosis the purger, and most excitingly Cabal Therapy each featured new artwork. Many of the cards of Graveborn are played in Legacy Reanimator, Entomb being the biggest, but also Reanimate, Exhume, Polluted Delta, Inkwell Leviathan, while of course the coveted Cabal Therapy is played in Legacy dredge and quite a few vintage decks as well. A small added bonus is that the Premium Decks each had very special set symbols, instead of an abstract design like most sets, they had more recognizable symbols, graveborn for example have a distinct skull which not only appears on each card but is also on the included spindown. The Fire & Lightning and Slivers Premium Deck, which I’ll talk more about in a moment, had designs of a classic Sliver and Ball of Flames. 8 Undefeated Decks in Core 2019 Standard for Magic The Gathering!

19:48
For today's daily Magic The Gathering video, we take a look at 8 undefeated decklists that have come from the first day of Core Set 2019 being legal in standard on Magic the Gathering Online. These decklists have gone 5-0 in a competitive standard league on MTGO. I talk a lot about some very cool decks in this video. Some of these great decks include: Grixis Energy, Mono Black Zombies, Blue Black Gift, Mono Red Aggro, and many more! Core 2019 wasn't expected to make a huge impact on standard, but it was expected to enhance or even bring back standard archetypes that we have seen do well previously. We talk about the impact that cards like Nicol Bolas the Ravager and Ajani Adversary of Tyrants may have on the future of standard. If you enjoyed the video and found it to be informative, then a subscription and/or a like on the video would be immensely appreciated! I hope you have a fantastic day and I will see you tomorrow for another daily Magic The Gathering video! My Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/Alby_MTG My Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/AlbyIsLive
