The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth

14:49
The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep. Living on the Ocean Floor

03:06
Living on the Ocean Floor - footage recorded by Vincent Zintzen, Te Papa Fish Team, Natural Environment. Film recorded using a baited Lander in various locations and depths around NZ. The video unit lights up the dark world of the deep sea. Food is scarce so the animals that live in the depths are attracted to the bait. The camera reveals the interesting behaviour of these creatures as they strive to survive in their extreme environment The footage of the seal shark attacking the hagfish, and getting a mouthful of slime for his troubles, is a good example of the knowledge gained through this difficult and exacting research. MYSTERY CAR ON SEA FLOOR MAY BE TIED TO MURDER

01:16
We were diving off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. I saw something strange on the bottom. It looked like an automobile… A Volkswagon beetle to be exact. But how did it get here? And why? I know there is more to this story… A lot more. Maybe it was murder…. Maybe it was fraud… Maybe it was Insanity Maybe it was art… Do you know? Leave me your thoughts in the comment section. EXTRA CLUES In case you are wondering, the car was found at a depth of 12 Meters or 30 Feet just off the coast of an Island called Isla Mujeres. The Island is very close to Cancun, Mexico which means almost anything could be going on. But there is one clue we didn't film. It was a small luggage tag on the rocks just next to the car. It took some time but we were able to clean it up and reveal the name of a hotel. WATCH 2ND VIDEO IN THE SERIES FOR MORE CLUES. CLICK HERE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYLNbID3xJo

How Undersea Internet Fiber Optic Cables Are Laid On The Ocean Floor

03:12
Laying of cables in the oceans of our world is a fascinating business. Men and women toil long and tedious hours to make this possible. Submarine cables are laid down by using specially-modified ships that carry the submarine cable on board and slowly lay it out on the seabed as per the plans given by the cable operator. The ships can carry with them up to 2,000km-length of cable. Depending on the equipment on-board the cable-ship, the type of plow used, the sea conditions and the ocean-bed where the cable is being laid down, cable ships can do anywhere from 100-150km of cable laying per day. Newer ships and plows now do about 200km of cable laying per day. The cables are specially constructed for submarine operations as they have to endure harsh conditions as well as pressure. Fiber optic cables carry DWDM [Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing] laser signals at a rate of terabytes per second. They use optical repeaters to strengthen the signal which attenuates over long distances. They have a decade lifespan and costs vary (depending on the length of the cable). The typical cost for a project is anywhere from $100m-$500m. We don't use satellites because they can't carry terabytes of data for less than a billion dollars per communication line. The coiling of hundreds of miles of cable in the cargo hold is a process that can take between three to four weeks to complete. Submarine cable laying process starts from the landing station, where a long cable section is attached (connected) to the landing point and then extended out to a few miles in the sea. This end is connected to the cable on the ship and then the ship starts its cable laying process. The process also involves a plow. The cable is not simply left to sit on the ocean bed, but is actually being fed into a plow, that lays the cable into a trench. Depending on where the cable is laid out, the cable coming in from the ocean to the landing station might be advertised or not. Most of the time cable consortium companies try to hide the cable as much as they can, so that only those who need to know – municipalities, port authorities and shipping companies – are informed of the exact route of the cable. When cables are damaged, either divers or specialized small submersibles with cameras and lights are sent down to the seabed to investigate where the cuts are. Then, either the divers or robotic arms on the submersible bring the two ends of the cable to the surface, where they are re-spliced and joined again. Top 5 Discoveries on the Ocean Floor

02:52
5 - Yonaguni Monument 0:10 The Yonaguni monument is located on Yonaguni Island, one of the most remote Island off the coast of Japan. It was discovered in 1986 by a local diver. The monument looks like an underwater pyramid, something man made and not found in nature. It is said be around 2000 years old based on recent carbon dating. The current theory is that an earthquake buried the structure into the sea. This is one of these things we may never know but people will always try to figure it out. 4 - Two Locomotives 0:34 5 miles off the coast of New Jersey 2 locomotives were found at the bottom of the ocean. Although very rusty they were both preserved in excellent condition. The train engines were discovered in 1985 by a surveying boat captain with a manometer. Both train engines are Planet Class 2-2-2 T models and were encrusted with over 160 years of rust and barnacles. It was a miracle they were found considering they are resting 90 feet below the surface but it is unknown how they got there. There is no record of them being built or lost at sea but it’s thought they were being transported to the mid atlantic and fell to the sea floor during a storm. 3 - Dornier 17 German Bomber 1:11 The Dornier 17 was thought to be extinct even with over 2000 of them being produced up until the 1940s. It was believed none survived, the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, until one was found by a diver in 2008. Discovered on Goodwin Sand near Kent, in the United Kingdom the battered Dornier 17 is still considered to be in “remarkable condition”. Complete with a twisted frame of the plane, both engines, some of the original axle grease, and tires still inflated! Definitely not going to worry about getting a flat tire landing that plane. The Royal Air Force museum recovered the plane in 2013 as part of $1.2 million dollar project that is now spending 2 years on restoration. 2 - Pavlopetri 1:47 Pavlopetri is one of the oldest, lost cities on earth. It was discovered in 1967 by Nicholas Flemming but not fully explored until 2009. The dive team took 5 years to carefully search the entire area of which they found a full city with roads, 2 story homes, most of the buildings contained 12 rooms, a cemetery, gardens, temples, and a 40x20 square plaza. The city planning is said to be so good that it’s actually better then a lot of cities built today. Today 15 buildings can be clearly still seen underwater but this incredibly accurate recreation in 3d shows what the city looked like in it’s prime. 1 - Heracleion Ancient City - 2:21 The ancient egyptian city was found under the water and mapped out meter by meter with its artifacts brought to the surface. It is thought the city collapsed after a massive earthquake and at some point was flooded. The discovery of Heracleion has yielded the find of many egyptian artifacts but the great find of all is the knowledge that we now know that egypt was infact a country that was very heavily involved in shipping and trade via the sea. It was unknown until now if this was actually true. First Scientific Diving Expedition at the Dead Sea

02:48
BGU researchers have today that they have discovered deep springs on the floor of the Dead Sea, which provide fresh water to the rapidly dwindling lake. Meanwhile, a parallel study by German researchers has found new forms of life growing around the fissures in the sea floor. The Dead Sea is shrinking as the water level drops at an alarming rate -- about a meter a year. Israeli and German scientists have been researching groundwater springs which discharge from the sea floor to understand the impact of this process on this unique ecosystem. While the existence of springs has been known for decades as people observed ripples on the surface, the scientists have discovered deep springs not visible from shore.

Mysterious "Structure" Found On The Ocean Floor?

04:00
Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MysteryHistory Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MysteryHistoryBook/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Mysterytweetery Steemit: https://steemit.com/@mysteryhistory We know more about the surface of our moon, than we do of the bottoms of our oceans. To date, we have managed to explore a mere five percent of the floors of Earth’s oceans. Much remains to be learned, and indeed explored. Unimaginable mysteries, treasures, and the possible odd sea monster, could all still be laying deep within the blackness, irretrievable, and thus, undiscovered. Our oceans are the lifeblood of the planet, covering more than 70 percent of its surface. Responsible for the driving forces behind weather systems, the regulation of global seasonal temperatures, and ultimately, supporting all living organisms in one way or another. Just what could be laying upon our ocean floors? Lost relics from a bygone era? Possible crashed, ancient alien craft?... Indeed, we have already covered the enigmatic Eltanin antenna, which was discovered resting deep upon the Antarctic sea bed, found some decades ago. Yet what else could be lurking down there? Just waiting to be discovered… It seems fortunately, that an ROV, a Remote Operated Vehicle, managed and controlled by the Olympic Challenger, may have managed to give us another glimpse at one of these utterly perplexing structures, resting deep within our oceans. Recorded on September 11th, 2010, it is still unknown just what this object could be, possibly ancient? Seemingly installed, sunk into the ocean floor at a considerable depth. Curiously, the recent event unfolded during a live-feed broadcast, and for some reason, as soon as the ROV came into visual contact with this most peculiar of objects, or indeed possible structure, the crew controlling the machine, mysteriously decided to manoeuvre the ROV away, out of view of the object, and then quickly accelerated away… The small fragment of footage that was seen however, indicated that the number of right angles within the structures form, and indeed its overall appearance, makes it seem unlikely to have had natural origins. Fortunately, a few people who witnessed the live exploration broadcast, managed to record the event, and subsequently leak the footage to the public, so we fortunately we do have video evidence of the discovery taking place. However, due to the company’s reluctance to discuss, or even acknowledge the event, not much regarding the discovery has been attained. Just what this thing was, may remain a mystery, or at least kept secret, hidden away from most of the public domain. A year ago, we shared with you the leaked state department emails, files, and documents - Made available to the public by way of wiki-leaks founder Julian Assange, which pertained to the united states governments full awareness of a UFO crash site near the populate northern town of Igloolik, Northern Canada, very near to the borders of Greenland…. This object subsequently sinking to a great depth, it then began to emit a mysterious ping, a possible distress beacon, a sound, which for some time began to annoy a large number of the locals. Since this event a few years ago, the strange ping has seemingly disappeared, and the fate of its source remains a mystery. An unfortunate fate which may also be bestowed upon this most recent, and intriguing of discoveries made by the Olympic challenger. Yet thankfully the world got to see it first. http://conspiraciones1040.blogspot.com/2012/04/quien-instalado-este-objeto-en-el-fondo.html http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2016814 https://www.animalplanet.com/

10 Sea Monsters ATTACKING A Boat!

12:03
Check out these 10 sea monsters attacking a boat! This top 10 list of ocean creatures like whales and great white sharks attacking a ship shows some bizarre stories caught on camera! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "MYSTERIOUS Creatures Living At The BOTTOM Of The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/Efhjc-Gu508 Watch our "SECRETS Casinos DON'T Want You To Find Out!" video here: https://youtu.be/hAoABuvzOZM Watch our "RAREST And Most EXPENSIVE Cars In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/MtCnWSqqilg 10. Great White Shark If you’ve been on a boat out on the ocean, a Jaws attack has probably crossed your mind. Even if it’s just barely!! Then of course you rationalize that the chances of that happening are practically 0. Practically. That’s what Terry Selwood, a 73-year-old Australian fisherman learned in 2017, when a great white shark leapt out of the water, into his boat!! 9. An Eagle Ray Rays seem like beautiful, serene creatures - but they can be extremely dangerous, even if you’re on the relative safety of a large tourist boat. In 2011, Jenny Hausch had rented a 26-foot catamaran for her family to take a trip in Florida. Sounds really nice right? 8. Swordfish In 2017, Alan Pope, a British tourist, was on a boat trip getting ready to go snorkeling in Indonesia when everything went horribly wrong. Without any warning, a swordfish jumped out of the water and into the boat, and impaled his neck with its bill. The end snapped off, and left six inches of the sword still jabbed inside his neck, just millimeters from instantly killing him. 7. Sperm Whales The Gulf of Alaska is a prime fishing location, especially for those trying to catch black cod. In these waters, though, there is a much larger creature that also likes eating the fish- sperm whales. They are the ocean’s largest toothed predators, and while they are quite capable of catching food for themselves, they much prefer taking the easy route. 6. Giant Squid Mostly creatures of legend, giant squids are mentioned in many old mariners tales of dangers at sea. But they are rarely seen, let alone involved in attacking boats. So when a team of French sailors came face to face with one in 2003, they almost didn’t believe it!! 5. Bull Shark You might think that a great white shark would be the most problematic shark species to boats, but there’s another type that can be more aggressive, and more likely to risk an encounter. 4. Jellyfish Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can have the biggest effect, something that became ever so apparent in 2017 when Chinese scientists were investigating why their aircraft carriers were experiencing difficulties. They found that large swarms of Jellyfish were getting caught up in the propulsion systems! This would stop the ships dead in their tracks, or cause the engines to overheat and cause extreme damage. 3. Mako Shark This next story took place just last year, 2017 in Long Island, New York. A fishing charter boat was taking guests to the location where they find the widest variety of fish, when suddenly a Mako shark jumped onto the side of the boat. Unfortunately for the fish, it managed to get itself stuck in the handrail of the boat and, despite thrashing about, it couldn’t free itself. 2. Black Marlin Game fishing is a popular pastime for many enthusiasts, but when you’re chasing after some of the largest and most powerful marine creatures on earth, you have to be ready for the unpredictable. Again last year, things went very wrong indeed for a fishing boat off the coast of Panama. They had caught a black marlin, a species that can weight up to 1500 pounds and reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. 1. Killer Whale If you’ve ever watched a nature documentary that’s featured Killer Whales, you’ll be all too familiar how organised and clever they can be. Pods work together to catch prey, and even tilt ice flows to trap seals. When they turn these skills towards human activity, the results can be frightening. "Alien Antenna" Found On Sea Floor In Antarctica?

Support Us On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MysteryHistory We Are Also On Steemit: https://steemit.com/@mysteryhistory Antarctica, one of the world’s most mysterious continents, home to one of the largest and driest deserts on the planet, covering an area of around 5 and a half million square miles. If there was anywhere on earth where crashed, preserved, ancient alien technologies could still be found, it would be here. An untouched landscape which may in all possibility be the final resting place of as yet, un-retrieved relics, which have been stranded there to this day. The deep sea which surrounds Antarctic for example, are some of the most difficult and inhospitable environments to explore anywhere. Far away from the modern world, deep within the frigid, pitch black waters of this massive chunk of ice, where our next discovery was miraculously made. An out of place artefact which is still resting at the bottom of this sea. Known as the Eltanin Antenna, if it wasn’t for the brute strength of the nearly 2000 tonne ice breaking vessel known as the Eltanin, we may never have found it. Initially a US Navy as a cargo-carrying icebreaker, in 1962, she was reclassified as an Oceanographic Research Ship, and became the world's first dedicated Antarctic research vessel. On the 29th of August 1964, while collecting sample cores and photographing the seabed west of Cape Horn, the Eltanin took the first known photograph of the antenna at a depth of nearly 4000 metres. The first public mention of the unusual object would not surface for several months, a news item which appeared in the New Zealand Herald on 5 December 1964, under the heading "Puzzle Picture From the Sea Bed" would briefly disclose the discover, yet any further exploratory missions, if indeed there has been any, have been operating in secret. Similar to the Baltic sea anomaly, yet positioned at a far deeper depth, in an extremely remote, cold, and lonely part of our world, it too shows all the hallmarks of an artificially created object, the question is, what could it be? And more importantly, whats was, or is, its function? How was it placed where it is? In 1968, author Brad Steiger wrote an article for Saga magazine in which he claimed that the Eltanin had in fact photographed "an astonishing piece of machinery... very much like the cross between a TV antenna and a telemetry antenna". It is interesting to note that the black knight satellite, an anomalous object which is in a polar orbit, has been declared by numerous investigators throughout history, as an artificial “alien satellite”, and with what appears to be an enormous alien antenna resting on the Antarctic sea floor, is it possible that the two are connected? Or possibly, in communication with each other? In 2003 Tom DeMary, a researcher in underwater acoustics, contacted oceanographer A. F. Amos, a member of the Eltaninins crew the 1960s, in an effort to debunk any theory involving artificial design. In turn Amos referred DeMary to the 1971 book “The Face of the Deep” by Bruce C. Heezen and Charles D. Hollister. It seems Hollister had already attempted to identify the mysterious object as a carnivorous sea sponge. However, these attempts to discredit any unusual hypothesis, was solely based on the same photographs we are privileged to, further photographic exploration of the object, if undertaken, has been done in complete isolation from the public. What is the Eltanin antenna? A mere sea sponge? An actual alien antenna? Whatever it is, it seems certain fields of study would like you to believe its natural, regardless of whether confirmation of such claims was made, we always find this highly compelling. http://www.deakin.edu.au/news/2012/230512marinelife.php Deakin University and Parks Victoria marine scientists have captured rare video of fish and other marine creatures living off the coast of Western Victoria, 100 metres below the ocean surface. This project is essentially a census of the fish population and will tell us about what fish live where, how many of them there are, what their habitat looks like and how they interact with other species and across habitats. The results of the research will help inform management of marine parks. For further information about this program, visit: http://www.deakin.edu.au/news/2012/230512marinelife.php

Hundreds Of Vents Leaking Methane From Atlantic Sea Floor

Methane is a harmful greenhouse gas known to be a major contributor to global warming and climate change. Off the Eastern coast of the United States, deep in the Atlantic Ocean researchers have discovered hundreds of vents that they think are leaking methane gas. The study found 570 gas vents that were identified stretching between the states of North Carolina and Massachusetts. According to Professor Adam Skarke from Mississippi State University, who led the study: "The methane is dissolving into the ocean at depths of hundreds of metres and being oxidised to CO2. But it is important to say we simply don't have any evidence in this paper to suggest that any carbon coming from these seeps is entering the atmosphere." One effect of climate change is rising ocean temperatures, which some researchers think might be causing the vents to open. Estimates say that there might be up to 30 thousand of these kinds of vents in oceans around the world. Unique kinds of life forms have been found living near the vents, which the researchers say is a significant find because of the amount of biodiversity that is able to exist there.
