Advertising to children is the act of marketing or advertising products or services to children, as defined by national legislation and advertising standards. It is often the subject of debate, relating to the alleged influence on children's consumption. Laws concerning such advertisements have largely evolved in recent years. In most countries, advertising for children is framed by a mix of legislation and advertising self-regulation. In many countries worldwide, advertising is also governed by self-regulatory codes of conduct. Advertisers, advertising agencies and the media agree on a code of advertising standards -- a set of ethical and behavioural rules they commit to respecting -- which is enforced by a Self-regulatory organization, often an independent industry-funded body, responsible for drafting, amending and enforcing the code. Self-regulatory organizations for advertising are increasingly following the best practice model agreed with regulators and consumer and public health groups in Europe.[6] At a minimum, the general aim of self-regulatory codes is to ensure that any advertising is 'legal, decent, honest and truthful', but in most countries detailed rules are in place for different advertising techniques and sectors. Advertising self-regulation is built on different levels. On a global level, the International Chamber of Commerce has drafted a global code on marketing communications.[7] All forms of marketing communications worldwide must conform to the ICC Consolidated Code on Advertising and Marketing.[8] The code includes a specific section, detailing the special care needed when communicating with children. Since 2006, a global code of practice on food marketing communications is also in place. The Framework for Responsible Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverage Marketing Communications of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)[9] sets down global requirements for food and beverage marketing communications on all media, including the Internet.[10] Key provisions include: the need for substantiation for claims or health benefits; no encouragement of excess consumption; no representation of snacks as meals; no undermining of healthy lifestyle messages; no undermining of the role of parents. These codes provide a minimum requirement for marketing communications worldwide. National self-regulatory codes, based on the ICC codes, are established, policed and enforced by local Self-Regulatory Organisations (SROs) and industry in over 100 countries and apply to a range of media, increasingly also including digital marketing communications. The ICC and national codes are reviewed regularly to ensure that they remain relevant to local, cultural and consumer concerns and that they promote best practice. The ICC Framework is applicable globally but is a minimum standard designed to be adapted and transposed into SR codes at national level. Many countries have implemented SR provisions that use the ICC Framework as a basis, but go further in several respects, depending on local considerations. Examples include Australia,[11] Brazil,[12] Canada,[13] Chile,[14] France,[15] Ireland,[16] The Netherlands,[17] New Zealand,[18] Spain,[19] the UK[20] and the USA.[21] In the United States the Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB) established in 1974 by the National Advertising Review Council (NARC) runs a self-regulatory program that includes a prescreening service for advertisers to ensure they are in compliance with COPPA and the CARU guidelines. In addition to industry-wide self-regulation, individual companies and industry sectors have introduced a wide range of additional provisions relating to marketing communications directed at children. For example, most multinational food and beverage companies have developed their own policies on food and beverage marketing communications to children and, most recently, have announced the joint implementation of these individual commitments. In July 2007, 10 of these companies (now 13) announced a common pledge in the US -- the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative,[22] mirroring a similar initiative by 15 companies in Canada -- the Canadian Children's Food & Beverage Advertising Initiative;[13] and followed by 11 companies in Europe with the EU Pledge.[23] Under these initiatives, participating companies will cease advertising to children under 12, other than products that meet specific nutritional guidelines, based on international scientific recommendations. People have trouble parting with their money, and restaurants know that. That’s why they often don’t indicate the currency. - Marketologists use this trick: they add a similar product with a higher price so that the initial one will seem cheap enough by comparison, and its sales will go up again. - One more nice move is to create a legend that will follow the product, and it doesn’t matter if it even makes sense. Antioxidants Studies have shown that more people will buy foods with antioxidants for no other apparent reason. It’s found in chocolate, 7up, raisins, wine, fruit juice etc. What are they though? They’re enzymes in your body that inhibit oxidation and prevent cell damage. Keeps your immune system supercharged. Some serious hype was formed from antioxidants in the 1990’s but some are curious is the hype is worth it. Sure antioxidants are great and all but they’re also popping up in unhealthy foods. Adding cherry flavoring and high fructose corn syrup to the mix doesn’t necessarily make it a whole lot healthier 4. No Juice No Sweetener Here we see an example of a capri sun which has been labeled as having no artificial flavors and other natural flavors. The only weird part about them saying they have natural flavors is that in the nutritional facts section the label says that it contains no juice! So where did this mysterious flavoring come from? It’s not artificial and not from fruit juice, is it from the twilight zone or what? The drink still contains high fructose corn syrup, sucralose, splenda, and natural flavor. Sure there are no artificial colors but it’s chock full of sweetner. Don’t forget that Castoreum is a yellowish secretion from the beaver which is often mixed with their urine in order for them to mark their territory. Someone randomly decided to give it a taste and found out that it tasted like strawberries and raspberries! This is often given a labelling of natural flavor 3. More Natural Flavoring You might come across a bottle of vitamin water and think what could possibly be unhealthy about this and the 0 calorie vitamin water must be even better right? A new sweetener is on the loose that is found in a plant but it can be processed to be 150 times sweeter than sugar. The process used to create this extraordinarily sweet food is anything but natural, using chemicals such as ethanol, isopropanol and other complicated chemicals. You can see it labeled on this bottle as stevia extract and coca cola has begun using it in a variety of products that will label it as organic. If it’s so natural, why did coca cola want to patent their process of extracting the stevia sweetner from the plant?. Some studies would insist that something this sweet can cause this body to act in a similar manner as if it were consuming something actually 2. Grass Fed Beef We would all love to believe that beef labeled as grass fed is from cows who roamed around on pastures, eating green grass living life the way they were meant to live, until they get slaughtered at a butcher house. It’s not always clear to some people though how farmers are able to get that label. Basically they just have to apply for it from the USDA to get accepted. Grass fed beef is typically more expensive and can sell for a better price at grocery stores so it’sclear why people want to get that label. In order for it to really be grass fed beef, you need to see the words, US Grass Fed accompanied by USDA Process Verified 1. Frozen food Not only are there probably hidden trans fats in that microwavable pizza, frozen foods are a mystery on their own. When it comes to frozen food, what you see is not always what you’re going to get, kind of like how this person got ripped off. How long can frozen food still stay good for, is what many people are asking and there seems to be a lot of mystery surrounding them. Frozen foods don’t require any preservatives because freezing the food keeps it edible for a long period of time. However, when they reach these drastically low temperatures, often under 0 degrees, they begin to lose flavor. Many items such as fish, chicken or beef can be frozen for over a year before you put them in the microwave. Frozen foods can often be labeled as fresh but when it reality, the food company just froze it while it was fresh and sells it when demand reaches their requirement.
