Sometimes formal and informal English can seem like two different languages. Sian's here to show you four features of informal English - and some ways you can make these features more formal. For more, visit our website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/course/towards-advanced/unit-19/session-1 Transcript: Hi, Sian here for BBC Learning English. In this Masterclass we're going to look at some differences between formal and informal English. Hey, how's it going? Good afternoon, how are you? Sometimes formal and informal can seem like two different languages. In the same way you wouldn't normally wear shorts and a t-shirt to a job interview, if you use language that's too formal or too informal, you can give a bad impression. Let's look at some differences between formal and informal English. Now, I received an email this morning. Have a look at this email - do you think the language is formal or informal - and why? Dear Mrs Brown, I'm writing to find out whether you have any jobs in your company this summer. At the mo I'm studying Economics at uni. I have been working part-time in a shop and recently they promoted me to the role of manager. I am enthusiastic. I work hard. I pay attention to detail. Ok, so that email used informal language and it's too informal for this style of letter. We're going to look at four features that make this informal and we're going to change it to make it more formal. Number one: choice of vocabulary. In informal English we use more common words and more phrasal verbs. For example here we have a phrasal verb: find out. It would be better to use a more formal equivalent like enquire. Same with jobs, this is quite informal, so instead let's use vacancies here. Instead we have "I'm writing to enquire whether you have any vacancies." Number two. It's more common in informal language to use abbreviations, contractions, shortened forms of verbs. Let's have a look. So, here we have at the mo, which is short for at the moment. This is OK when you're speaking, but not when you're writing. Here, we can use currently which is even more formal. Same here, uni is short for university, so don't use this short form in a letter. "Currently, I am studying Economics at university." Quite often in formal language we choose passive structures over active. Let's have a look here. The active sentences they promoted me is quite informal - it'd be much better to use a passive form here to make it more formal: I was promoted. So, "Recently I was promoted to the role of manager." This doesn't mean don't use active structures in a formal letter, but have a think about whether a passive one is more appropriate. Finally, in informal English, short, simple sentences are much more common. Whereas in formal English, we use more complex sentence structures. Take a look at this one. Here we have three short, simple sentences and this is fine in informal English, but in formal English it's better to use a complex structure. We can do this by adding relative pronouns or linkers. For example, "I am an enthusiastic person who works hard and pays attention to detail. So, would you kindly visit our website... ah, we're friends, that's too formal. Go to our website bbclearningenglish.com for more information about this and to practise formal and informal English. See you soon - goodbye!

Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY People who fall into the high functioning portion of the spectrum often live lives just like anyone else who's not on the spectrum. They are said to be higher functioning cognitively than others on the spectrum. SYMPTOMS: Just like anyone on the Autism Spectrum high functioning people can still struggle with communication, making eye contact, and socially interact overall. Since interacting with others can be so difficult, those who are high functioning often report feeling very anxious prior to a social gathering, and being wiped out afterward because it takes SO much energy to engage with others. Anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder & depression are the most common comorbidities with HFA, and research shows that OCD and HFA commonly occur together because they both are affected by any abnormalities in a person’s serotonin production. Based on that information we could conclude that all comorbidities can be caused and affected by serotonin changes. I also believe that because people with HFA are more aware of their differences from others they could feel anxious about interacting with people or even depressed about their struggle to connect. Sometimes having insight and awareness into our own conditions can be hard to handle, and could lead to other mental health issues. People with HFA may struggle to understand jokes, or sarcasm from their peers. Therefore they can appear “mature for their age” but they are really just uncomfortable in social situations. They can have delayed initial speech, but later develop functional communication. They can have obsessive actions regarding appearance, cleanliness, fears and social situations, and also shortened attention spans. TREATMENTS: ASD isn’t something that people grow out of, nor is it something that needs to be cured, but there are many supports: 1. Occupational therapy OT: an occupational therapist is there to help develop skills for handwriting, fine motor skills, and activities of daily living skills. 2. Speech therapy: a speech therapist helps your child learn spoken language and/or nonverbal communication skills. 3. ABA therapy: applied behavior analysis focuses on techniques that help guide learning and bring out meaningful and positive change in behavior. 4. Psychotherapy: psychotherapy uses a variety of techniques to help children who experience anxiety, depression, OCD, or other psychiatric systems that cause problems for the autistic child. 5. Floor time therapy: floor time activities derive from the idea that we as parents can help our children by meeting them on their level to expand circles of communication. 6. RDI therapy: relationship development intervention therapy is a family-based, behavioral treatment designed to address autism’s core symptoms by appreciating all perspectives, coping with change and integrating information from multiple sources such as light and sound. 7. PEC therapy: picture exchange communication is used with nonverbal autistic children to learn to communicate without words so that they can make choices and communicate their needs and minimize their behaviors so that they can be a much happier child. 8. Aquatic therapy: using swimming as therapy increases the effectiveness of all other forms of treatment by learning better balance, communication skills, sensory issues, and oral motor skills. Can you actually make a disease disappear? Dr Rangan Chatterjee thinks you can. Often referred to as the doctor of the future, Rangan is changing the way that we look at illness and how medicine will be practised in years to come. He highlighted his methods in the groundbreaking BBC TV show, Doctor In The House, gaining him much acclaim from patients, his contemporaries and the media. He is the author of the international bestseller, The 4 Pillar Plan - http://amzn.to/2yGfpuB which has been released in the USA and Canada under the title, How to Make Disease Disappear - https://amzn.to/2GstJf6 Rangan’s 15 years of clinical experience in the NHS includes internal medicine, immunology and general practice. A pioneer in the emerging field of progressive medicine, he also uses techniques from other disciplines he has studied including movement kinetics and functional medicine. His own journey of learning was accelerated when family members fell ill and now Rangan is helping people to take control of their health by addressing the root causes of their illnesses, something which is often not achieved in 21st century health care, evidenced by a steady increase in the rates of chronic disease. Rangan is a super-generalist, looking at as many factors as possible which can create wellness or illness. His talk is testament to how our thinking around the concept of disease needs to change to help form a map for future healthcare. 1. Gratitude is always the best place to begin. 2. Always start off with a Smile. 3. Dress appropriately, look good. 4. Being prepared is an act of love. And intelligence. 5. Connect with the audience. 6. A power start: It’s a good idea to start your opening speech with powerful, influencing words. 7. Know who you’re talking to. 8. Tell a personal story. 9. Words should be clear and distinct. 10. Never, ever admit to fatigue. 11. Take jibes on yourself rather than others. 12. Be very particular about your body language and expressions. Too much movement of your hands while speaking, or constantly shifting to and fro your position is to be avoided. 13. Stay in the lead as long as you’re on stage. 14. Go amid the audience: Yes! That would be an excellent way not only to connect with the audience but also you will make a mark for yourself. 15. Presence of mind: The anchor will need to cover up for the time lag and instantly come up with ideas to keep the audience engaged. 16. Believe that people are rooting for you. No one likes to see someone bomb. They really do want you to win. 17. Be short but effective. 18. Uniform eye contact: The anchor is the master of the stage. When you speak, you’re addressing each and everyone present before you. Do not look only into a particular direction, or towards a few selected people. 19. Take help of a person for proper coordination. 20. Innovation is welcome! Instead of a regular, typical flow of events, a twist in the tale never fails to win hearts. Raps have taken centre stage at many events recently! You could even break into a song or dance, mimic a celebrity, the list is endless! 21. Always write up some backup lines in case there is someone new or uninvited. 22. Working with co-anchors: If you’re hosting with a partner, it is important to work together and agree on a script. 23. Stick to your guns in case of any Slip up or Fumble. 24. All’s well that ends well: A great show needs a great ending. As a traditional concluding speech, you thank the dignitaries first, and then the audience and wish them a pleasant day.

Link to tip to strengthen your frame & build confidence: https://goo.gl/kaWl1i How To Give An Amazing Speech Without Using Notes Public speaking is terrifying. But at some point in your life, no matter how much you avoid it, you’re going to get called on to give a speech. It could be a presentation for work, a best man speech at a wedding, who knows. And if you can’t give it without notes, you’re at a huge disadvantage. Because not only does it come off as less authentic if you’re constantly referencing notes, but if the powerpoint breaks, you’re screwed. This video is going to to teach you how I regularly talk for 10-20 minutes, with minimal memorization and how you can learn to public speak without any notes too. 0:32 - Outline your speech in memory friendly form 2:00 - Write out everything on paper (or computer) 2:43 - Subvocalize your speech without using visual cues 4:25 - Memorize the first and last sentences word for word Subscribe to Charisma On Command: http://bit.ly/subscribeCOC Connect With Us. A letter to your friend and a cover letter for a job application are written very differently. Whether you work in business or are taking the general IELTS or CELPIP test, knowing the difference between informal and formal writing is a skill you should have. Watch this writing lesson, take our quiz, and check out our resource page to become a better writer. - Use the resource: http://www.engvid.com/english-resource/formal-informal-english/ - Take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/writing-letters-formal-informal-english/ http://www.engvid.com/ TRANSCRIPT: Hello, my name is Emma, and in today's lesson we are going to learn about writing. What kind of writing? Writing letters. Okay? So this is important for people who work in business. It's also important for people who like to write letters to their friends maybe or to their grandparents in English. Also, it is very... It is a very useful video for anyone who is taking the general IELTS test. So if you're taking not academic, but general, this is an important video. And also, if you plan to immigrate to Canada and you want to do the Canadian immigration test which is called: "the CELPIP", this video is also... It will also be useful and helpful to you. Okay? So let's get started. What do I mean by "formal" and "informal"? "Informal" means something you would write to your friends, something you would write to your parents, - well, probably your parents unless you're afraid of your parents, then you might be more formal -, your classmates, your coworkers. Okay? So this is... It means it's not formal; it's for people you know well. On the other hand, "formal" English we use with strangers, we use with our boss, in the workplace, we use it in these different ways. So it's the English you really have to think about, whereas informal is kind of the relaxed English. So relaxed, serious. Okay? So, sometimes you will have to write a letter formally, maybe to your boss or your company, other times maybe you're on holiday and you want to write a letter to your friend, you'll use informal English. So what is the difference? Let's see. Informal English uses contractions. What are contractions? "Didn't", "wouldn't", "couldn't", "haven't", "hasn't". So if you see a verb with an apostrophe and then a "t", that is a contraction. Okay? It's very important to know this because in formal writing, you don't use contractions. "Didn't" would be: "Did not". I can write that for you. "Did not". Couldn't: could not, haven't: have not, can't: cannot. Okay? So that's one major difference. Another major difference between formal and informal writing is the use of idioms; the use of certain expressions. If I'm writing to my friend, maybe I'll say: "Oh, you know, I've been very under the weather lately." Meaning: I've been very sick. If I'm writing to my boss, I won't use idioms. If I'm writing a formal letter, I will not use idioms. Those aren't good to use in formal writing. Phrasal verbs, this is another thing we find in informal writing. What is a phrasal verb? It's a verb that has a preposition. Okay? So, for example: "find out", "find" is a verb, "out" is the preposition. "Go" is the verb, "up" is the preposition. So the... The preposition adds a different meaning to the verb. Phrasal verbs are very difficult to learn; we have so many of them in English. My students have told me phrasal verbs are one of the hardest parts of learning English, but it's possible, you can do it.

(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) This CARTA symposium addresses the question of how human language came to have the kind of structure it has today, focusing on three sources of evidence. One source, which is discussed in these three talks, concerns neuroscientific investigations of functional specialization for language in the human brain and its dependence on the linguistic input the language learner gets during cognitive development. Evelina Fedorenko (Massachusetts General Hospital) begins with an examination of Specialization for Language in the Human Brain, followed by Rachel Mayberry (UC San Diego) on How the Environment Shapes Language in the Brain, and Edward Chang (UC San Francisco) on Neuroscience of Speech Perception and Speech Production. Recorded on 2/20/2015. Series: "CARTA - Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny" [4/2015] [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 29395]

The game is mostly implemented in a functional style in Common Lisp. Since the game state is tracked with perisistent, immutable data structures, it was trivial to keep track of the state of the game each frame, so you can run the game in reverse (like rewinding at normal speed). It's not complete or polished, it's mostly just a tech demo. Code is available here: https://github.com/deliciousrobots/cl-block-game

It's not enough to just receive a diagnosis, she says, people have to learn to live with depression and other mental health issues. In her talk, she shares the techniques she's learned to help her get stuff done while depressed. Jessica is a warrior who fights five illnesses daily: bipolar II, polycystic ovarian syndrome, asthma, psoriasis, and the neuromuscular autoimmune disease Myasthenia Gravis (MG). Jessica Gimeno was valedictorian of her class, winning more than 20 speech competitions. Motivated by a friend’s suicide, she spoke to hundreds of students about mental health stigma and helped thirty students get psychiatric help. In her free time, Jessica is a diehard New Kids on the Block fan who enjoys pilates, painting, and playing with her nieces and nephews. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Functional programming as a programming style and discipline is useful even in languages which are not pure functional languages. By practising programming in a pure functional language like Haskell, programmers can drastically improve the quality of code when coding in other languages as well. The talk is based on first hand experience of using Haskell in internal courses in our organisation to improve code quality. This talk will cover Gofer (one of the earliest variants of Haskell) as a teaching tool, including the choice of the language, the features from Haskell that should (and shouldn't) be covered and the obstacles and benefits of the exercise.
