Xen in EFI World - Daniel Kiper, Oracle
EFI is a very hot topic now because more and more hardware vendors are providing some new systems with it. The long term goal is a total removal of legacy BIOS support. It means that Xen should be prepared for that case. Indeed it is mostly ready. During this presentation it will be shown what EFI is in real and how Xen and other required pieces use EFI infrastructure. However, there are still some shortcomings in Xen and they will be described too. There will be also some guidance how to efficiently start Xen on EFI platform. Some guests topics related to EFI also will be covered.

[2014] OpenStack Perf Optimization with NUMA, Huge Pages and CPU Pinning by Daniel P. Berrange
The OpenStack project builds and distributes the leading open source cloud infrastructure platform. Of all the hypervisors supported, KVM is by far the most widely deployed in production, by an order of magnitude. In the most recent dev cycles there has been a big uptake in interest in optimizing hardware performance. To that end there is work being done to enable full advantage to be had from NUMA hardware, huge pages and CPU affinity. This talk will look at the work undertaken and the unique challenges faced in a cloud environment, as opposed to traditional data center virtualization. Daniel P. Berrangé, Red Hat Daniel is a Principal Software Engineer, working in a variety of roles at Red Hat over the last 12 years. Since 2006, he has been specialized in the development of technologies related to virtualization management, as lead developer of Libvirt, GTK-VNC, Libvirt Perl, Libvirt GObject and Libvirt Sandbox, and contributor to the Xen, KVM, oVirt and OpenStack projects. Daniel is a passionate believer in the value of open source software and the benefits it brings to the world. Outside of his day job at Red Hat, he is also maintainer of the DBus Perl binding and the Entangle remote camera control & capture software. How I Learned to Love Pictures: OEM Performance Page Fundamentals
Presented by Doug Burns Tues 3rd July 2012 Summary Key performance analysis and tuning principles apply regardless of the version of Oracle you're using, but the Oracle 10g Diagnostics Pack instrumentation and related OEM Performance Pages built on these principles to offer a new, more visual, performance analysis approach. This webinar will focus on live demonstrations of pretty screens, but also on building an understanding of the data behind the screens to improve your ability to use them effectively. A live Q+A session with Doug Burns will follow the presentation. For our complete archive, and to sign up for upcoming webinars please go to http://www.red-gate.com/oracle-webinars

vmsplice with transparent huge pages - Robert Jennings, IBM
"vmsplice() could move (rather can copy) pages between processes, but performance would be greatly improved if this supported THP. QEMU is looking to use vmsplice to move pages from one process to another. QEMU will use this to move a VM to an updated QEMU executable (security fix) with minimal downtime. This approach flips pages without copying but as it uses pipe buffers it operates on 4K (or base PAGE_SIZE) pages only. I would like to discuss solutions to improve this page flipping where one possible option is to change pipe buffers to support transparent huge pages." http://www.linuxplumbersconf.org/2013/

GOTO 2012 • Making The JVM Fly Experiences With Enterprise JVM PerformanceTuning • John Davies
This presentation was recorded at GOTO Aarhus 2012 http://gotocon.com John Davies - CTO & Founder of Incept5 ABSTRACT Sometimes you just know something should be running faster, but as long as it runs fast enough you leave it as-is. Then, a few clients start having interesting challenges and you realise you're going to need to start tuning the JVM to address the issues encountered. In this presentation, John will walk through two real-world performance tuning scenarios that he has encountered - topics to be covered include memory usage, object creation, I/O throttling, serialisation, benchmarking and testing. Although the majority of it is not rocket science, it can be astonishing how a few small changes can make a huge difference to the performance of a JVM application. When do you have to consider giving up object-oriented elegance in exchange for specific optimisations based on the way the JVM works? How much of an impact does object allocation have on a modern JVM? How good are developers at guessing where the real bottleneck is? Join us to learn the answers to these questions, and to gain insight into what's really involved in JVM tuning. https://twitter.com/gotocon https://www.facebook.com/GOTOConference http://gotocon.com

Hannes Frederic Sowa - System/Networking performance analytics with perf
perf has become the defacto standard for linux performance analysis. Often the most basic commands are just enough to pinpoint bottlenecks and get a feeling what is going on. But perf is much more powerful... In this talk we will explore what other features perf provides: Besides simply checking where the CPU spends most of its cycles, one can easily add custom tracepoints and capture arguments or return values from functions. We will do so on examples in the networking stack. This will be useful to isolate bugs or even validate patches. In an outlook the talk will introduce the audience what performance counters are available on today's CPUs but not easily accessible in perf. A short introduction will be given on how the register and masks are to be interpreted from the CPU manuals and how they can be used from perf. As examples we will analyse the MOESI protocol and memory bus traffic between different NUMA nodes.

Memory Analysis and Performance Profiling
Jiri Sedlacek lic, PgCert, MBCS The history of performance analysis tools goes back to the birth of computer programming; to a time when computing resources were a scare commodity. However, even in today’s environment of high performance and high capacity hardware making applications and computer programs as efficient as possible is still important. In this talk, Jiri will consider issues around instrumentation, sampling, and memory analysis techniques, and how these can be applied in both the software development and quality assurance phases of a development. The presentation will look at different collection mechanisms, and when and why each of them is appropriate. In addition, he will discuss the importance of understanding the underlying implementation; together with looking at pitfalls and solutions related to common hash functions.

2015 OpenStack Vancouver - Sreedhar Varma – Practical performance and scalability considerations
Object storage is very popular but sometimes applications require block protocols. Other times service level objectives (SLOs) require a need for speed beyond what object storage can provide. This session will focus on the important factors for designing a high performing and highly scalable iSCSI storage environment for OpenStack. The session will include the following discussion topics: • Optimal iSCSI configuration for Nova, Nuetron and Cinder modules • Local and networked storage topology comparisons • Logical Volume Manager (LVM) scalability considerations • Bandwidth partitioning to isolate a dedicated storage network • Scaling shared resources by using multiple targets and multiple Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) per target • iSCSI offloads and tuning techniques • Maximizing compute node resource utilization and virtual machine density Whether your application has very demanding storage requirements or you just want bragging rights, this session will help you make the most out of your iSCSI storage environment. This session will discuss the valuable lessons learned from the trenches for designing and deploying very fast iSCSI storage in your OpenStack environment.
