While promoting the Blu-ray release of the Kingsman: The Secret Service, director Matthew Vaughn admitted in an interview with Yahoo UK that he was indeed working on the script for a sequel to the comic book based movie. Vaughn stated:Well, the good news is that I’m writing it next door at the moment. If I think I can get the script good enough, then we are making it. So again, stay tuned, but we are doing our damndest to make that happen. The first movie made over 400 million worldwide on a 80 million dollar budget, so it’s no surprise that a sequel is in the works, however the original movie was based on a limited 6 issue series by creator Mark Milllar who has yet to write a comic book sequel. Looking for a brilliantly outrageous display of fun spy gadgets, vicious fight sequences and insanely entertaining characters? Kingsman: The Secret Service is a must-see come February 13th. The film stars Colin Firth as Harry Hart, a member of an independent international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion called Kingsman. The group’s in need of a new member and Harry’s candidate for the job is a little unconventional. Whereas most Kingsman candidates are stand-up ladies and gentlemen with impressive backgrounds, Eggsy (Taron Egerton) is a street punk who just got busted for stealing a car. I could talk about Kingsman: The Secret Service for hours, but while the cast was in New York City for an early press day back in December, I (very happily) had to make due with just four minutes with Egerton, Firth and Sophie Cookson who plays Roxy in the film. We discussed what stunts they did themselves, how they shot that epic church scene, which cast member could actually make it through Kingsman training and score the job, and more. For our money, the most daring and original spy flick of 2015 was Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service thanks to its hyper-stylized action and clever remixing of typical spy genre tropes. Vaughn is returning to direct the sequel and – according to The Secret Service comic book co-creator, Mark Millar – has again written the script with longtime writing partner, Jane Goldman. Taron Egerton is also set to return as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, the hapless lad whom Colin Firth’s Harry Hart trains to become an elite gentlemen spy. Whether or not Firth is returning remains a mystery, but regardless Kingsman 2 will see Eggsy needing to save the world from some new, dastardly villain. While talking with Collider about his latest film, the Olympic sports comedy, Eddie the Eagle, Egerton elaborates (as much as he’s allowed) on Kingsman 2‘s script and villain: “With Kingsman, we’re shooting in the summer at present. There’s a script, it’s brilliant. Obviously there’s only so much I can say but what I can say is that we shot [the first] one all in the U.K., that won’t be the case with the next one. Superstar pairings are tricky. Like rock supergroups or comedic powerhouse projects, sometimes a whole can be much less than the sum of its parts. The Secret Service: Kingsman, is a project of luminaries Mark Millar (the creator of best-selling Wanted and Kick-Ass comics), Dave Gibbons (the multi-award-winning artist of eminent comic classics Watchmen, Batman and Doctor Who) and Matthew Vaughn (the producer of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, and director of Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class). On paper this sounds like a great idea. And given that it's a graphic novel, on paper is a great area for it to excel. However, whilst the premise seems fun and art is certainly striking The Secret Service fails to be the 10/10 home run you'd be expecting. Set in London (Peckham to be precise) the tale of super spies traverses the globe and focuses on Gary - a NEET youth who's uncle just so happens to see some potential in him. If you think you know where the story is going you are correct. Cockney James Bond - but with attitude! is a fun sketch premise but a little hard to take seriously as a story.This may sound dumb but for a comic the characters are a little cartoonish and some of the dialogue feels like it was taken from Danny Dyer's "needs more work" pile. A pile incidentally, that I would love to see. That's not to say it's a bad read - it's a big dumb action comic that's not to be taken seriously. If you're looking for action with character and depth then you're very lost, but if you want thrills, spills and indomitable wills you'll probably have a good time. There is already a movie in the works directed by Vaughn and with an early 2015 release. The Secret Service: Kingsman is out 1 April from Titan Books. Warning: this review contains mild spoilers for Kingsman: The Golden Circle. WHAT IS ‘KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE’? Kingsman: The Secret Service introduced a new kind of spy to cinema audiences in Taron Egerton’s Eggsy. Inspired by the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons comic-book series, the first film set up a franchise showcasing Eggsy’s initiation into the world of Kingsman, a covert UK-based spy operation. It segued into his first adventure under the wing of Colin Firth’s upper-class agent Harry Hart, also known by the codename Galahad. The Golden Circle is the follow-up. Harry was seemingly killed off after being shot in the head, and Eggsy has been trying to adjust to spy life without his mentor. And doing a pretty good job, as it happens. The film’s opening sequence shows him thwarting a bad guy with a cybernetic arm in a chase across London in a black cab. But dangerous though this guy is, he’s just the thin end of the wedge. When Kingsman HQ is destroyed and a series of explosions up and down the country all but decimate the agency, a sister organisation comes to light. Known as Statesman, the Kentucky-based agency masquerading as a whiskey distillery joins forces with its UK tailor-house fronted cousins to fight their common enemy. Namely, Julianne Moore’s drug-peddling Poppy who is intent on holding the world hostage. But their pairing is nowhere near as smooth as the whiskey or clothes either purveys… IT GETS BETTER THE LESS YOU CARE The good thing about Kingsman: The Golden Circle is that it (mostly) gets better as the film goes on. The narrative wears you down with its relentless nonsense, absurdity and crudeness, to the point where you stop caring about making sense of it all. But rather than wind up hating the film, you surrender to its sense of fun. To a degree, at least, anyway. Once the frenetic cold open involving a London cab subsides, the film attempts to re-establish Eggsy. As he converses with his friends, who include Thomas Turgoose as Liam, the script trips itself up. The conversation here just doesn’t ring true and it really needs to in order for us to reconnect with Eggsy and his working-class roots. You end up cringing at the exchange. Which is never good. On top of that, Taron Egerton’s urban dialect that he’s at pains to uphold throughout the film slips multiple times. Depending on your acceptance threshold for this sort of thing, it ranges from slightly bothersome to incredibly grating. He’s not the only one — Mark Strong is guilty of letting Merlin‘s Scottish accent slip too at times. Anyway, these early scenes are among the film’s least successful, and provide an early warning that the rest of the film will be packed with jokes that won’t land. Some will, however, and fortunately the film does indeed improve as more characters (and high-calibre actors) are introduced, things get zanier, and the plot makes less sense. Or as you resign yourself to caring less about its failings, as we said. It’s also got some pacey, innovative and way-out action set pieces with some pretty gruesome death sequences thrown in for good measure. PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF TASTE Kingsman The Golden Circle Kingsman: The Golden Circle art. Some of the film’s leanings and inclusions are distinctly questionable. Vaughn and writer Jane Goldman seem intent on pushing the boundaries of taste. Sure, there are crude schoolboy jokes here and there but the Glastonbury-set sequence which involves the forced insertion of a tracking device into a certain part of one female’s anatomy is treading on dangerous ground. Vaughn tries to dial it back with the recipient of said device turning seductress, but the intention — and set-up — is already out there. What follows is a sequence lifted from Judd Apatow’s copybook that shows you more than you thought you’d ever see.
