How to develop focal points in your home - Design Lesson 13

08:14
Hi everyone! Welcome to another DESIGN LESSON video! In each video I'm going to review some key design principles that you should keep in mind when you're thinking about renovating or decorating your space. So if you have a design dilemma and need some answers, feel free to comment in the section below with your questions or you can tweet me your questions on twitter @designchickee. Your dilemma could become one of these Design Lesson videos right here! In the meantime, let's get to today's topic… Today I'm going to talk about how to choose and develop focal points in your home. The focal point of a painting is an area of emphasis that demands the most attention and to which the viewer's eye is drawn, pulling it into the painting. A focal point in interior design is an element that catches your attention. It's usually the most important part of a room, where furniture is focused on that focal point, it can determine how you walk into the room around that furniture and it should really hold your attention once you're in the room. This idea, of drawing you into a room is really important because it tends to be the first thing you see when you walk into a space and it becomes your first impression of the space. So you'll want it to be warm and inviting. So... How do you do that? The number one rule is to walk through your home and pinpoint the spots where you need to add warmth and interest to pull you in farther. Thanks for watching this video... there's so much to cover here! And all the images sources are listed below. DO'S & DONT'S for kitchen backsplash: Design Lesson 11

06:45
Hi everyone! Welcome to another DESIGN LESSON video! In each video I'm going to review some key design principles that you should keep in mind when you're thinking about renovating or decorating your space. So if you have a design dilemma and need some answers, feel free to comment in the section below with your questions or you can tweet me your questions on twitter @designchickee. Your dilemma could become one of these Design Lesson videos right here! In the meantime, let's get to today's topic… One of the most difficult choices when you design your kitchen is your choice of backsplash. The kitchen backsplash is a material finish that transitions from countertop along the wall to upper cabinets and should help you in keeping your kitchen clean and practical. But it also provides an aesthetic backdrop for the overall look of your kitchen. I believe all aspects of your kitchen should work together as a whole and the backsplash is an integral part of that composition. So I'm going to take you through my thoughts on kitchen backsplash ideas and all the do's and don'ts from an Interior Design perspective. Floristry Design Tutorial: A Lesson on Visual Balance and Actual Balance

I have had lots of questions regarding this matter and have decided to provide a quick and easy lesson on how it actually works when it comes to creating a design that not only looks balanced but is balanced and doesn’t tip or fall over. As a general rule, the flowers and foliage being placed into a container should be 1 ½ times the height or the width of the container – whichever is the greater.
