Leica and Magnum: Past Present Future
Leica and Magnum - Focus on the Future Magnum Photos International, Inc. and Leica Camera AG have begun a technological and photographic collaboration that will build upon almost a century's worth of shared history between these two world-renowned photographic institutions. Building on their shared history Magnum and Leica agreed to collaborate on a series of projects that continue their longstanding dedication to independent documentary photography. Beginning in the spring of 2011, Leica will sponsor the creation of a series of independently produced multimedia essays that will highlight the personal journeys and insatiable curiosity of Magnum photographers. The stories will be published at the homepages of Magnum Photos, the LFI Magazine, and also at this homepage. In addition to supporting individual projects, Leica and Magnum will use the production of the new essays as an opportunity to learn from Magnum photographers' experiences in the field with the latest Leica equipment and thus develop the Leica portfolio according to the needs of photographers world-wide.

Josef Koudelka - Photographer Technique & Process
Josef Koudelka talks about his works, technique and process. Koudelka was born in 1938 in Boskovice, Moravia. He began photographing his family and the surroundings with a 6 x 6 Bakelite camera. He studied at the Czech Technical University in Prague (CVUT) between 1956 and 1961, receiving a Degree in Engineering in 1961. He staged his first photographic exhibition the same year. Later he worked as an aeronautical engineer in Prague and Bratislava. He began taking commissions from theatre magazines, and regularly photographed stage productions at Prague's Theatre Behind the Gate on a Rolleiflex camera. In 1967, Koudelka decided to give up his career in engineering for full-time work as a photographer. He had returned from a project photographing gypsies in Romania just two days before the Soviet invasion, in August 1968. He witnessed and recorded the military forces of the Warsaw Pact as they invaded Prague and crushed the Czech reforms. Koudelka's negatives were smuggled out of Prague into the hands of the Magnum agency, and published anonymously in The Sunday Times Magazine under the initials P. P. (Prague Photographer) for fear of reprisal to him and his family. His pictures of the events became dramatic international symbols. In 1969 the "anonymous Czech photographer" was awarded the Overseas Press Club's Robert Capa Gold Medal for photographs requiring exceptional courage. With Magnum to recommend him to the British authorities, Koudelka applied for a three-month working visa and fled to England in 1970, where he applied for political asylum and stayed for more than a decade. In 1971 he joined Magnum Photos. A nomad at heart, he continued to wander around Europe with his camera and little else.

David Alan Harvey - HOME Project Magnum Photos
Magnum Photographer David Alan Harvey on the subject of "HOME" In collaboration with FUJIFILM, Magnum Photos is on a major new project exploring the subject of "HOME". An exhibition of the work will tour to seven cities around the world starting in March 2018, and be accompanied by a photobook. 16 Magnum Photographers will explore the theme of “HOME” for the project. Known for their wide range of approaches, Magnum Photos members produce documentary photography that encompasses art and photojournalism. Sharing the agency’s legacy for humanistic photography, associated with its founding in 1947, Magnum’s contemporary practitioners are united by a curiosity about the world. This project invites them to explore a universal subject familiar to us all. “Home” is not only defined as a space for physical living. It holds various other associations that are emotional, biological, cultural and societal. These 16 photographers have been given an open brief to explore the subject through their own individual practices, the resulting work reflecting their personal take on a subject that we all record photographically. Stranger - Olivia Arthur
Our interview with Magnum photographer Olivia Arthur about Stranger: http://fotografiamagazine.com/stranger-olivia-arthur On 8th April 1961 the MV Dara, a ship carrying passengers between India, Pakistan and the Gulf, sank just off the port of Dubai. An estimated 238 people lost their lives. Some bodies were never found and relatives of the missing continue to this day to search for their loved ones. Stranger, a new project by photographer Olivia Arthur, imagines a survivor returning to Dubai fifty years later, and what they would see. Through photographs and small anecdotes, the viewer is taken on a journey through a city that is both awe-inspiring and alienating. A city which has grown at breath-taking pace from a population of 90,0000 in the 1960s to over 2 million in the current day, and continues to draw people from all over the world with its promise of riches. The Beatles by Magnum photographer David Hurn
In 1964, Magnum’s David Hurn photographed The Beatles in the Abbey Road Studios where most of their famous music was recorded. His photograph is part of Magnum’s rich visual heritage, a collection that has been acclaimed for its breadth, relevance and brilliance. For nearly 70 years, Magnum photographers have been telling stories without words as they capture political, economic, sporting and social upheavals and triumphs across the world. They were there to capture the decisive moments as history was being made. The Magnum Photos Endowment Fund is now looking to create a non-profit foundation where the archives of this unique photographic heritage will be collected, stored and preserved for future generations in Paris. The project – known as La Fondation Magnum - will include original images, contact sheets, notebooks and the stories behind each photograph all chosen by Magnum photographers themselves. "Photographer Josh Ritchie rented Profoto 7b heads and battery packs. Then used a combination of magnum reflectors, beauty dishes, soft boxes and a parabolic umbrella to control the light in a way to work with the ambient light and create the dramatic look with the football players. He used a Nikon d3 with a Nikkor 17-35mm 2.8 lens. It was shot at 17mm on iso 100 at f-16 at 1/30 of a second."
