The Key to Powerful Leadership Communication
Those who are new to leadership often function primarily as information brokers. They spend an enormous amount of time and effort gathering information, synthesizing it and providing it to others. Unfortunately, people don’t need more information. They need more perspective and meaning. What they really need is more leadership. When the true leader speaks, things happen. In this video, Gregg Thompson, President of Bluepoint Leadership Development dispels the myths about communication, identifies the difference between leadership communication and management communication, and then shares three dimensions that leaders can use so that their words will make a difference. One voice, your voice, can make a difference…when The Leader Speaks.
Leadership Styles Autocratic Democratic Laissez-Faire
Leadership styles like autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire styles in the workplace have different strengths and weaknesses. Which leadership style or type of manager are you? This video looks at each style and touches on how each one has some usefulness depending upon the situation. FREE 7 Instant Tips for Confident & Composed Public Speaking http://bit.ly/2M1NfVE-SpeakingTips The video mainly compares and contrasts autocratic style vs. democratic style of leadership and touches briefly on the laissez-fair style. Autocratic Leadership = Boss-centered leadership with a high power distance between the leader and the employees. Democratic Leadership = Team-centered leadership. Classical Management Theory
Classical Management Theory, broadly speaking, is based upon Henri Fayol, Frederick Taylor, and Max Weber's overlapping management theories. These three management theories came together to form what we generally refer to nowadays as Classical Management Theory. Virtually all areas of organizational studies from management, to business, to organizational communication put these three theorists at the foundation of most modern day organizations for developing theories of 1) Administrative science, 2) Scientific Management, and 3) Bureaucracy. Taken together, they form the basis for how we organizational structures and relationships between managers and employes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1433131234/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=alexlyon-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1433131234&linkId=6bfd9c333c786d16025c5a7c70a3ef4c The Organizational Communication Channel provides supplemental lessons for traditional, hybrid, and 100% online courses for students and teachers everywhere. Understanding & Leveraging Leadership Styles
What is your leadership style? Are you a get-it-done type or a caring, relationship builder? Are you touchy feely, go-with-your gut person or a cautious, information gatherer? Are you direct, often interpreted as blunt, or more emotional, viewed as wishy-washy? Knowing your leadership style is important to your success in both your business and personal lives. In business, it enables you to leverage your talent and seek out the right new hires to complement the leadership styles of your current management team. There is no right or wrong style, and the combination you choose for your business can be the 'make or brake' of achieving your goals. Using the DISC profiles, as an example, here are two aspects of leadership styles. Graphed on this chart, we have the two extremes of communication styles -- casual and formal -- plotted against personality types -- extroverted and introverted. Each of the four DISC types is placed in a quadrant. Casual communicators tend to use less formal language, include feelings in the discussion and seem less articulate when speaking. Formal communicators, on the other hand, use fewer words, come across as more direct and always have their i's dotted and t's crossed before weighing in. Likewise, extroverts and introverts have very different styles. Extroverts are the talkers who speak as they process thoughts, while introverts are considered good listeners because they observe more than they verbalize. Dominant styles are more results-based and direct while Supportive types are all about relationships and people. Inspiring leaders are all about the why, often making decisions based on emotions and feelings. Their opposites, Cautious personalities, are all about the information, and often put off making decisions until they have collected enough data. Now let's look at how these characteristics play out in a boardroom... The company's leader is a Dominant, both extroverted and formal. He begins a meeting that was scheduled weeks before but may or may not have told anyone else what the agenda is. In the meeting, he dives straight to the deliverables and action items because spending time on small talk and relationship building is a waste, not to mention annoying. He knows exactly what he wants from everyone and assumes that they do to - telling the team what will happen, not by asking for input or getting buy-in. The Supportive people are quietly feeling uncared for and unloved with their leader's abrupt start. They smile and nod while trying not to let on because they want the best for the leader and the organization, and are ready to contribute. They also secretly wonder if the leader is having a tough time personally and maybe he just needs a hug later. The Cautious people are sitting with their arms crossed and not going to play along because there is no agenda to define the meeting and therefore they are not prepared with meaningful input. They are insulted they weren't asked to weigh in with their expertise and research, but aren't about to put their neck out and look stupid. The Inspiring types are talking about their weekend regardless of the agenda, interrupting the Dominant leader and excited to be out of their cubicle and in a room full of other people! They aren't as concerned about where the company is going as they are in getting there together and the social events that will happen along the way. Sound like your office? Of course, this is an oversimplification of the personality profiling and leadership team design process, but it gives you an understanding of how your leadership style affects your working relationships. If you are interested in delving deeper into this topic more, here are a few books on the topic: * Quiet -- Susan Cain. A must read whether you are an introvert or extrovert * The 4 Dimensional Manager: DISC Strategies for Managing Different People in the Best Ways -- Julie Straw * Crucial Conversations -- Patterson, Grenny, McMillian, Switzler * Working Together: A Personality-Centered Approach to Management, Isachsen, Berens * Drive -- The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink Need someone to walk your executive team through a day on understanding leadership styles? Sheryl Sandberg: The Importance of Authentic Communication
Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, talks about the importance of communication in scaling one's own career and business relationships. She recommends that rather than stating opinions as facts, managers state beliefs and the facts that support it, and encourage others to do the same, as a tool to encourage better information sharing. She also encourages everyone to take full responsibility for the actions, and to make them personal, stating that this ownership is a crucial building block at all stages of one's career. The Art of Persuasion in Leadership
Stories are particularly useful tools for persuading and influencing people. Leaders don’t communicate just to convey information. They use communication skills to sell others on the vision and influence them to behave in ways that achieve goals and help accomplish the vision. Persuasion is the action or fact of influencing someone or of being persuaded to do or believe something. The ability to persuade others is more critical today than ever before. The command-and-control mindset of managers telling people what to do and how to do it is gone. Employees don’t just want to know what they should do but why they should do it. Persuasion is a valuable communication process that individuals can use to lead others to a shared solution or commitment. To be persuasive and act as communication champions, leaders must communicate frequently and easily with others in the organization.
