This is a quick book summary and analysis of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. This channel discusses and reviews books, novels, and short stories through drawing...poorly. Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Minute-Book-Reports/1148331925195691 This is a story about two friends, George and Lennie, who are on their way to a working farm. George is a small man with lots of big talk. In contrast, Lennie is a simple-minded large man who has a tendency to get in trouble. Both hope to one day own a farm where they can live off the land and Lennie can tend to the rabbits. They enter the farm which is run by Curley, a spoiled, mean boss who challenges George and Lennie immediately upon arrival. Curley is married to a promiscuous woman who is known to cause trouble. On numerous occasions, George warns Lennie to stay away from her. The working life for George and Lennie isn't too bad, as Lennie is a great field worker. Unfortunately, he accidentally kills Curley's wife. In a panic, Lennie flees. Curley sends his men, including George, to hunt down Lennie with a shoot-to-kill policy, as it is suspected that Lennie stole a gun. Lennie runs to a secret spot that George had designated for times of trouble and the two meet there. Lennie is scared and asks George to tell him about their future farm. While telling the story, George pulls out the stolen gun and shoots Lennie in the back of the head. After Lennie's death, the men return to the farm for drinks. The relationship between George and Lennie is complex, yet not so foreign. In contemporary movies and stories, we tend to see this type of relationship a lot - the best friend story. However, the difference here is that there is a tragic element to this relationship. It is still unclear why George stole the gun at the end of the story. One would like to think that he wanted to nobly be the one to kill his friend, but an argument could be made that he wanted to be free of responsibility of Lennie and to be able to live his own life. Taking a step back, this is really a story of misfit toys. Each character - George, Lennie, Curley, his wife, each worker - has been dealt a bad hand in life. And unlike the Christmas special where the misfit toys make it off the island, these misfits are condemned to be doomed. Music by WingoWinston from newgrounds.com.

FILM DESCRIPTION: Gary Sinese directed this respectful re-telling of John Steinbeck's classic novel, with Sinese as the wily George and John Malkovich as the brutish, simple-minded Lennie. Set during the Depression era, the film opens as George and Lennie are running from a woman with a torn dress, who has sent a gang of ruffians to chase the two out of the county. After a long bus ride and a ten-mile walk, George and Lennie arrive at a migrant farm in California's San Joaquin Valley, where they seek work. George dreams of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land where he and Lennie can build a home; he hopes that in California the two can realize their dream. Unfortunately, the foreman of the ranch, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), enjoys tormenting Lennie, while Curley's frustrated wife (Sherilyn Fenn) entices Lennie with her sexual allure. George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley's wife, but Lennie follows her to a barn where a tragedy occurs and George and Lennie's dreams are shattered. Of Mice and Men Chapter 1 Summary By John Steinbeck Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/book_cheats Check out my Website: http://mybookcheats.com/ Chapter 2 link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoQ7DrSSqYY Opening Music: TNT by TroyBoi & Tincup https://soundcloud.com/trapmusic/tnt-by-troyboi-tincup The first chapter is set in the scene next to a river with a bunch of sycamore trees in Soledad, California. We are introduced to the two main characters, George and Lennie. George is a small guy with defined features. Lennie is a huge guy, with a shapeless face. Lennie is somewhat mentally challenged. These two men were run off of their last ranch in Weeds, California because Lennie tries to pet some girls dress because it looked soft. They are coming down to Soledad, California to work on a new ranch where nobody knows them and where they don’t have a reputation. Throughout the chapter Lennie keeps catching mice and accidentally killing them because he pets them too hard. He is literally obsessed with things that are soft and nice to pet. George makes the two of them camp the night there because he doesn’t want to the run the risk of people finding out how slow Lennie is and them losing the opportunity for work. George takes care of Lennie because he is a decent person and feels like Lennie can’t take care of himself. Use of Foreshadowing in Of Mice and Men. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, foreshadowing is used a great deal throughout the whole story. From the beginning to the end, it appears everywhere hinting on what will happen in order to make the book more enjoyable. It was used to show that Lennie will be getting into trouble with Curley's wife, the death of Lennie, and exactly how he dies. The moment that Curley's wife was introduced, an ill feeling overcomes the atmosphere indicating that Lennie will be getting into a mess with her. George states in the very beginning that he is always getting into mishaps, "You do bad things and I got to get you out," (p.11). The situation in Weed involved a girl and Curley's wife just happened to be the only girl on the ranch. Connecting ends with ends, there is a sense of insecurity between these two people. Later on, there was an intimation that she was going to be killed by Lennie because he killed the mouse and the puppy, leading to bigger deaths such as Curley's wife. Foreshadowing plays a large role in indicating that Lennie isn't going to last long in this harsh world. The beginning introduces this world in such a great way, raising your emotions with a happy tone in a wonderful peaceful scene and then sends that scene plummeting over a cliff into a dark unhappy environment. The strong characters in this environment attack the weak and the weak attack the weaker. An example of the strong against the weak is when Carlson compels Candy, "I'll put the old devil out of his misery right now," (p.47) to let him shoot his dog. An example of the weak attacking the weaker is when Crooks teases Lennie, "jus' s'pose he don't come back," (p.72) Lennie is the weakest because of his mental disability and his lack of thinking for himself. He would either run away or be eliminated through death. Candy and his dog mirror the image of George and Lennie. Candy being George and his dog being Lennie. When the dog dies, it foreshadows his death because the dog represented him. The contrast between the first chapter and the last also shows his death because the same scene goes from the peaceful field to the violent death of the water snake. This deep change hints on the upcoming tragedy, Lennie's demise. The fact that the death of Candy's dog and the death of Lennie are identical reflects on the way his murder was carried out. He was shot by in the back of the head the same way the dog was. Candy told George, "I ought to of shot that dog myself"(p.61) making him chose to kill Lennie himself to save him from dying by the hands of a stranger. Doing it the way that Carlson did it was for the best because, "He won't even feel it." (p.48) Steinbeck used the technique of foreshadowing to make the book Of Mice and Men more than just merely a book. He made it a book where the reader can predict what will happen before it happens through hints in the surrounding events. Curley's Wife's death was foreshadowed by Lennie's reputation as a troublemaker, his own death was foreshadowed through relationships between characters and the use of contrast, and the way he was killed was shown through Candy's dog's death.

The compelling story of two outsiders striving to find their place in an unforgiving world. Drifters in search of work, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie have nothing in the world except each other and a dream--a dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch in California’s Salinas Valley, but their hopes are doomed as Lennie, struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and feelings of jealousy, becomes a victim of his own strength. Tackling universal themes such as the friendship of a shared vision, and giving voice to America’s lonely and dispossessed, Of Mice and Men has proved one of Steinbeck’s most popular works, achieving success as a novel, a Broadway play and three acclaimed films. This is the most depressing book I've ever read. Why would you make me read this? Why would you make me read this *twice*? The better question is, why does the American education system feel the need to subject teenagers to this year after year? HAVEN'T WE ALREADY SUFFERED ENOUGH?

Of Mice an Men Chapter 4 Summary By John Steinbeck Brief Summary In this chapter there was a lot of Dialog so I decided to put the pictures of whoever was talking at the time to help keep you slackers organized. But basically in this chapter most of the guys leave town and it's just Lennie, Crooks (the black stable buck), and Candy (the old man) that stayed. Lennie is bored and goes to Crooks room. Crooks teases him for a bit and Lennie reveals about their ranch they're going to buy even though they weren't supposed to tell anyone. Candy comes to crooks room and tells him the same thing. As they are chatting Curley's wife pops in to mess with them because she's bored. She figures out that Lennie beat up Curley and it happy about it. And the guys accidentally reveal to her about their plans for a ranch too. George comes back and gets pissed that they told Crooks. Candy lies and says that Crooks is the only one they told. And that's all that pretty much happens. Of Mice and Men Chapter 5 Summary By John Steinbeck All of this chapter happens in the barn. Everybody is outside enjoying there Sunday afternoon but Lennie is in the barn. Lennie is stroking his puppy who he killed by accident and he's mad at it for dying. He wonders if George will be mad at him. All of the Sudden Curley's wife sneaks up on him and asks about the dead puppy. Anyway, they get into talking about Lennie's obsession with soft things and Curley's wife tells him her hair is soft and grabs his had to have him touch her hair. She tries to pull away because Lennie is getting weird about it and like a kid he holds on to the thing he wants, her hair. She starts to scream and Lennie puts his hand over her mouth to try and get her to stop. He ends up killing her. Lennie sneaks out to go hide by the river where George told him to hid if anything bad happened. Candy and the guys find the body and they know it was Lennie. Curley is determined to kill Lennie. Of Mice and Men Chapter 6 Summary By John Steinbeck At the beginning of this chapter the final chapter in the book, we are brought next to Lennie who is hiding next to the river in the brush by the sycamore trees, where George told him to hide in the first chapter. Lennie talks to himself about how George is going to come and it is going to be the same old scolding. Lennie imagines his aunt Clara scolding him about killing Curley’s wife. He says he’s sorry and his Aunt disappears. Lennie then imagines a giant rabbit. It laughs at Lennie for wanting to tend the rabbits and tells Lennie that he would totally forget because he’s dumb. Lennie says that he wouldn’t forget. The rabbit tells him that George is going take a stick to beat the Hell out of him. Lennie says he won’t do that. The rabbit then tells Lennie that George is tired of him. The rabbit says that Lennie isn’t worthy to like a rabbits boot straps. The rabbit starts to repeat the “George is going to leave you, Georg is going to leave you…” Lennie puts his hands over his ears and cries that he won’t leave him. George comes quietly out of the brush. The rabbit then disappears. George asks Lennie what the Hell he was talking about. Lennie asks George if he is going to leave him. George says no. Lennie tells George that he did a bad thing. George solemnly says that it doesn’t matter. Lennie asks if George is going to scold him. George calmly repeats his scolding speech and he stops midway thru. Lennie asks him to tell him about the ranch speech. George starts on it. He tells Lennie to take off his hat and enjoy the breeze. George tells Lennie to look across the river so that he can imagine it. He starts on his typical speech that he tells him about the ranch. While Lennie is looking away he pulls out Carlson’s pistol. George raises the pistol, hands shaking. The guy’s voices start to get closer. George continues on with the story. Lennie turns his head one time and George tells him to continue looking across the river. George continues on talking about their dream ranch. And as he’s talking about the rabbits and Lennie is fully engulfed in his imagination, George pulls the trigger. Lennie falls instantly dead. George throws the gun to the ground. The guys come and Curley sees the scene first. Curley yells, “By God, he did it!” Carlson asks if Lennie had the gun and if George stole it away and shot him. George says yes. Slim reassures George that he had to do it. Slim tells George to come get a drink with him. The last words in the book are from Carlson and he says, “What the hell is eating them two guys?” Intro Song: https://soundcloud.com/arman-cekin-remix/rihanna-bitch-better-have-my-money-arman-cekin-remix This Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAsPmnxd10s Chapter 5 summary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYs6Rp_XBIo Check out my Website: http://mybookcheats.com/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/book_cheats
