His plan for quality mass and extreme strength isn't complicated. In fact, it's steeped in the fundamentals and old-school exercises that should be at the heart of everyone's program. It's a surefire road to growth, but it's fraught with pain and struggle. If you want to learn bodybuilding from the world's best bodybuilder, you're in the right place. | Basics Are Best | "The biggest mistake being made in bodybuilding today is that people aren't covering basic exercises," says the Austrian Oak. And by basic, Arnold doesn't mean easy. Many contemporary fitness centers are full of people on machines, not in squat racks, and big-box gyms often lack even a single platform. Arnold disapproves: "Today, when I go in the gymnasium, I don't see any of the kids learning about the clean and press, or the snatch, or the upright row from the floor." Schwarzenegger's insistence on the essential lifts is not due to some grandfatherly desire to live in the past. It comes from decades of continued interest and expertise in the industry, and from the hard-earned knowledge that it doesn't take fancy machines or off-the-wall programming to become arguably the best bodybuilder in history. Get back to your bodybuilding roots and experience unbelievable growth. | Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips | Chest: "There are three chest exercises that should always be done," Arnold says. "The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye." Back: "For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end." Arms: Arnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps. "For triceps," Arnold says, "we did a lot of narrow [close-grip] bench press in the early days. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later." Shoulders: Arnold's shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. "We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. Now those are called Arnold presses." Legs "The squat is the most important exercise to create big thighs," says Arnold. "I did back squats, front squats, leg extensions, lunges, single-leg deadlifts, good morning exercises, and a lot of leg curls." Abs: "The regular training we did for abs was just leg raises, knee raises, crunches, and sit-ups. I started at age 40 with a plan to change my body, this is how I looked…with many serious health issues. Fast forward and I am now nearly 51, this is a photo of me taken last week. EVERY YEAR I have managed to increase size, shape and aesthetics even past the age of 50. This is my 10-point plan for obtaining a muscular body after the age of 40: Point 1 Sitting on the coach with a beer in one hand, fat tummy, watching tv and generally look bad, what you don’t realize is that what you are doing is slowly dying and killing yourself. You need to look life in the eye again, you need to choose life, get up and LIVE again. You need to change yourself from the inside. Appreciate the small things in life, start caring for people in need, make right with God, start liking the person you see inside and out and respect yourself. Such life altering choices make one want to get up and LIVE and go to gym to re-invent your body. Such choices make the whole process so much easier and WORTHWHILE… Point 2 Diet determines 80% of your bodybuilding success. You REALLY need to get to grip with this. If you are not prepared to follow proper muscle growth diet guidelines your body will not respond even to the best training and best supplements regimes. Your results will be very mediocre at best. This is what separate the hero’s from the average…the diet! No two bodies re-act the same to the exact same diet. Every 14 days you need to monitor how your body reacted the past 14 day to the diet to determine if you lost muscle weight (bad), fat (good) or both (bad) and then adjust the diet accordingly in a specific fashion. It is not as difficult as it sounds, here is a link to the exact process you need to follow: http://gertlouw.com/2015/06/01/forcin... Point 4 Training determines 15% of your bodybuilding success. Next to diet this is 2nd most important. You must train at least 4 times a week and not more than 5. At age above 40 the body need more time to recover and grow, I find 4 the best balance (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Frid). Less than 4 is not advisable. It is too infrequent training and put you in danger of injury and is not conducive to muscle growth. Keep sessions never longer than 90 mins preferably 50 min. Point5 Training MUST be split as follows due the body being older than 40: • 3 months building phase (6-8 reps per set, EACH set to complete muscle failure) • 1 week rest • 3 month cutting phase (12 – 20 reps per set , 30% lighter weights, never to failure) • 1 week rest • repeat The above training regime allows for a serious 3 month growth spurge but place serious strain on tendons and joints which then need to recover and strengthen during the cutting phase. You cannot start training top failure you need at least a 3 month period of gradual weekly weight and intensity increases to reach the starting point of muscle failure for the next 3 month with the building phase program. You MUST also adjust your diet for the appropriate phase: Building phase diet: http://gertlouw.com/2014/10/27/muscle... and proper Cutting phase diet: http://gertlouw.com/2014/08/16/cuttin... Point 6 During the building (growth) phase you MUST train to absolute muscle failure on each set. This is a key principle for growth. Failure means total and utter failure – mentally and physically you must not be able to lift that weight one more set. If you train with sufficient failure intensity you WILL grow! Imagine not bathing in nearly that long because your body had grown so enormous that it could no longer fit in the shower. Imagine looking down at the scale and seeing the number 653 staring back at you. That's where Bodybuilding.com forum member Jesse Shand found himself in 2013. By then, he had given up on the idea of living a normal life—at least by society's definition of "normal." "I spent my days playing video games and trolling the Internet," remembers Jesse. "I was just all negativity, all of the time." Jesse's heaviest recorded weight was 653 pounds, but he probably weighed quite a bit more than that. He could only find a scale big enough to weigh himself with after losing weight for two months. The only thing more remarkable about the amount of weight Jesse lost—300 pounds—is the way he lost it—through help from strangers on the Bodybuilding.com forums. | 300 Pounds Down | Remarkably, Jesse's transformation started by accident. "It started off as nothing more than an ill-fated attempt to get a rise out of bodybuilding types," he recalls. Jesse created a thread called "Ask the fattest man on the misc [sub-forum] anything," posted photos of his then-obese body, and waited, fully expecting—almost inviting—a backlash. What happened instead set the wheels of change in motion. "[My plan] 'backfired' on me, and people started to try to convince me that it wasn't too late, that even at my weight, all was not lost," remembers Jesse. "I didn't want to hear it and made my usual excuses, like not having enough money for groceries or lacking the motivation. But the members of the thread didn't accept my excuses and even offered advice on how it could be done. They walked me through it, provided me with a platform to get feedback and take baby steps, and the rest is history!" "Drastic" might be a word that comes to mind when you think of taking that trek to and from your local Walmart for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but for Pasquale "Pat" Brocco, it was a major step in a life-changing journey. What began as a childhood habit of fast-food-fueled overeating quickly became scary after Pat's doctor said the words "pre-diabetic," "high blood pressure," and "gastric bypass." He may have taken baby steps at first, but Pat eventually shed over 300 pounds in three years. This is his story. Why did you decide to transform? A little over three years ago, I was a bodyguard touring with a notable comedian. We placed a friendly bet on the NBA finals, and the loser had to do 50 push-ups. I lost. When I attempted to crank out my punishment, I couldn't even do one push-up. This happened in a room full of people, mostly ladies, and it was embarrassing. I was supposed to be protecting them, and I couldn't even do one push-up. To add insult to injury I was in front of a comedian, so you can just imagine how that went. I stayed on tour for about six more months and then finally decided to go to a doctor. I couldn't weigh myself on home scales, so I had no idea what to expect. The doctor told me I was 605 pounds, prediabetic, morbidly obese, and had high blood pressure. He suggested I consider gastric bypass! It was one of the scariest, eye-opening moments of my life. I was 28 and making my death bed. Did you head home and automatically change? I emotionally ate for about a week. Then, one morning, I looked at my reflection when getting out the of shower. I was ashamed of what I saw. My stomach hung to my thighs, and my breasts were huge. I knew I couldn't live like this anymore. I needed to change, and that's exactly what I did. I headed straight for the kitchen, emptied my cabinets and refrigerator, and threw all the junk food away. At 600 pounds, I couldn't do much in terms of exercise, so I decided to walk to get every meal I ate. I knew I'd get hungry 3-4 times a day, and I used that feeling to motivate me to my destination. When it was time to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner, I'd walk a mile to Walmart and a mile back. If you want to look like Mike, you need to train like Mike—and the video you just watched only delivers a tiny taste of how this animal really trains. But don't worry—you don't need to be able to stand on your head or hold yourself upside down in order to follow Vazquez's workout. You do, however, need to hit the gym ready to work. Vazquez's training style is not for the faint of heart. It combines rapid-fire supersets of bodyweight and barbell movements, taxing nearly every aspect of your fitness level. If you think you've got what it takes to hang with Vazquez, get ready to channel your inner breakdancer and try this challenging workout. We have no doubt it will engage every muscle in your body—potentially including your upchuck reflex! Workout Notes Once you've completed Vazquez's quick warm-up, get ready to work on overdrive! Vazquez's lean body is a byproduct of how quickly and intensely he trains. To keep pace, your goal is to keep your rest to an absolute minimum. On each superset or triset, go from one exercise to the other without rest. You can only rest after you've completed the 2-3 exercises as prescribed. When you do rest, don't take any longer than about 15-20 seconds. Get a sip of water, wipe the sweat off your face, and get right back at it. If you're not accustomed to moving your body through these exercises at this speed and rep range, you may need to do fewer reps or fewer sets than originally prescribed. Do what you can do at your current fitness level, but try to continue working as quickly and efficiently as possible. By repeating this workout over time, you will become better and more efficient at it. When you're done with this workout, you'll move on to a little metabolic treat Vazquez calls the "finisher." To do it properly, you'll take an interval-training approach. Start with push-ups and do them for a full 45 seconds. When the clock hits 0:45, rest for 15 seconds, then move right on to mountain climbers. "Kids can be cruel," he says. "I was subject to ridicule and bullying, which caused me to develop a very defensive and protective state of mind." When Jordan was in the ninth grade, his parents divorced. He blamed himself, and his weight soared. It wasn't until he became a football lineman that his 5-foot-9, 290-pound frame was put to good use. Then, tragedy struck. "When I was 14, my mom suddenly passed away," he says. "I'll never forget the moment I heard the news. I was in complete shock." The search for "Why?" provided no answers and drove Jordan further into despair. "Food became my outlet—my coping mechanism for dealing with my depression," he says. "I didn't care about my future." By the end of his senior year of high school, Jordan weighed 400 pounds. He doesn't know how heavy he became, because after graduation, he stopped tracking his weight. "Doctors told me I would die young from obesity-related complications; I told them, 'If that happens, then so be it,'" he says. It wasn't until after his accident that Jordan had a change of heart. Why Was Your Accident A Wake-Up Call? On March 30, 2008, I was in a car collision, and it took five guys to lift me up on the stretcher. The next day, I went for an MRI and barely fit inside the machine. They almost had to send me to a special version that is bigger than normal. That day, I decided that I'd had enough. I decided I had to change the way I lived and ate, and I started exercising. I decided I was worth the hard work and dedication that it would take to improve my future. No matter how hard it would become, I vowed never to give up. I realized there was no room for excuses, self-pity, or fear. The pain of what had to be done could never match the pain I felt from the way I was living. What Were The First Steps You Took To Transform Your Life? I started out walking my little Boston terrier, Blackberry. It took me an hour to walk her one mile—down and back up a hill. After that mile, everything hurt. I felt so uncomfortable. But I stuck with it, and we were eventually running 4 miles a day six days a week. When I thought about quitting back then, I knew I had to do this not only for myself, but for my dog, too! I lost 100 pounds just from walking. While on vacation in Las Vegas, I ventured into the hotel gym. I got to work, hoping that nobody would be around. Soon after, a few folks joined in. Instead of laughing at me and reacting the way I thought they would, they encouraged me. When I got home, I joined a local gym. If people thought I was out of place or had negative thoughts, that would be their problem. The story of Nick Scott is one such account. An ordinary teenager, Nick had the usual aspirations of young men of his age: sports and girls. But his life changed on Aug. 17, 1998, when a tire blew out on his Buick Skylark. The car rolled over 5-1/2 times, ejected him, and then hit him in the back as a final indignity. He tells the story in the new video "Rising Up: The Story Of Nick Scott." In his hospital bed, Nick wasn't certain he'd ever walk again. Paralyzed from the waist down, he fell into a deep depression while his body weight eventually ballooned to more than 300 pounds. Coming back wasn't easy. But eventually, his resilient character began to fight back. "What's the one thing you gain from losing everything?" he asks. "It's perspective.
