Parameter Mode (IN,OUT,IN OUT) in PL/SQL |Part -20 | In Hindi by Tech Talk Tricks

10:02
Welcome to techtalktricks and in this video, we will learn about the parameter mode (IN, OUT, IN OUT).So stay tuned and watch how to use IN, OUT, and IN OUT parameter mode in the procedure. #TechTalkTricks #RanaSingh An IN parameter lets you pass a value to the subprogram. It is a read-only parameter. Inside the subprogram, an IN parameter acts like a constant. It cannot be assigned a value. You can pass a constant, literal, initialized variable, or expression as an IN parameter. You can also initialize it to a default value; however, in that case, it is omitted from the subprogram call. It is the default mode of parameter passing. Parameters are passed by reference. An OUT parameter returns a value to the calling program. Inside the subprogram, an OUT parameter acts like a variable. You can change its value and reference the value after assigning it. The actual parameter must be variable and it is passed by value. An IN OUT parameter passes an initial value to a subprogram and returns an updated value to the caller. It can be assigned a value and the value can be read. The actual parameter corresponding to an IN OUT formal parameter must be a variable, not a constant or an expression. Formal parameter must be assigned a value. Actual parameter is passed by value. I'm always looking for new video ideas. Let me know what video you'd like for me to create. --- Transcript Time - 00:00 Hi, this is Chad (Shod) with luv2code.com. Welcome back to another tutorial on Java JDBC. In this video, we’ll learn how to use stored procedures. We’ll first define what stored procedures are, next we’ll use callable statements. Then we’ll learn how to pass parameters to stored procedures. I’ll actually break this up over 4 different videos. I’ll show each parameter type in a separate video, so in this section we’ll cover IN parameters and then in the follow on sections, I’ll cover IN OUT, OUT and also result sets. Please stay tuned and check out the following videos for this. Time - 00:39 A stored procedure is a group of SQL statements that perform a particular task. They are normally created by a DBA. The stored procedures are created in a SQL language that supported by the native database. Each database has its own language. For example, MySQL has stored procedures language, Oracle uses PL/SQL and Microsoft SQL Server uses Transact SQL. Finally, the stored procedures can also have any combination of input and output parameters. For this tutorial, we’ll use the following table employees. The table has sample data for testing. I have a SQL zip file that’s you can download. It will create the table, add sample data and also set up the stored procedures. You can download it from the link below. Time - 01:22 All right, let’s go and switch over to the MySQL workbench and what I’m going to do is open up that SQL file and run it. This is our JDBC stored procedures directory. I have a subdirectory called SQL, and has this file, table set up that SQL. I’ll open this file, what this file does it basically creates a table as we see here and then it goes through and inserts a lot of sample data. Then, it also goes through and creates all of the stored procedures that we need for this tutorial, right. I’ll just go ahead and select execute and this will run and so now should I have a new table over here called employees and this table also has a collection or this database has a collection of stored procedures for this tutorial series, so get count employees, greet and increase salaries and we’ll go through all these stored procedures during the actual tutorial itself. Time - 02:24 In JDBC, you make use of callable statements to make a call to the stored procedures. There is a special syntax to call stored procedures. You make use of curly braces inside of the string. You also make use of the JDBC keyword call and that’s followed by the name of the stored procedure. In this example, we’re not passing any params, so we’ll just use the open and closed parentheses. Finally, we execute the stored procedure. Let’s talk about the parameters on the next slide. The JDBC API support different types of parameters. You can make use of the IN parameter, INOUT and also the OUT. The stored procedures can also return a result set, during the code examples in this video, I’ll show you how to register different parameters types and also values. Time - 03:09 Let’s start with IN parameters. For this parameter, we’re only passing an input parameter and the parameter is read-only. Our DBA has created a stored procedure on the database. This stored procedure will increase the salary for everyone in the department, which is kind of cool. The procedure takes two parameters. The first parameter is the department name. The second parameter is the increase amount. For example, we can call this stored procedure and increase the salaries of employees in the engineering department by $10,000. In terms of Java coding, we need to make a call to the stored procedure. First, we prepare a callable statement, since the stored procedure takes two parameters, we’ll make use of our question mark place orders for the parameters. [snip] ... See Transcripts tab

Oracle tutorial : sys_refcursor in oracle pl sql oracle tutorial for beginners cursor in pl sql we can use sys_refcursor as OUT parameter. A cursor is a pointer to a result set for a query. By returning a sys_refcursor you allow the client to fetch many rows from the query as it requires. basically we use sys ref cursor to return set of rows to client. so client can use this result set. u can fetch multiple rows. lets see example.. CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE get_my_list (list OUT SYS_REFCURSOR) AS BEGIN OPEN list FOR SELECT ALTID, FNAME, LNAME FROM EMPLOYEE; END get_my_list; / DECLARE l_cursor SYS_REFCURSOR; ID VARCHAR2(20); FNAME VARCHAR2(20); LNAME VARCHAR2(20); BEGIN get_my_list (list = l_cursor); LOOP FETCH l_cursor INTO ID, FNAME, LNAME; EXIT WHEN l_cursor%NOTFOUND; DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(ID || ' | ' || FNAME || ' | ' || LNAME); END LOOP; CLOSE l_cursor; END; / Subscribe on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpiyAesWNYOXSz5GPq8lbkA For more tutorial please visit #techquerypond https://techquerypond.wordpress.com https://twitter.com/techquerypond database cursor example database cursor sql server cursor

PL/SQL tutorial | Stored Procedure in Oracle Database 11g Complete guide

23:55
Learn in depth about stored procedure in oracle, usage of SP in Database. Creating Stored Procedure using in, out ,in/out parameter and handling exception inside with example. Stored Procedure in Oracle, Stored Procedure in PL/SQL, Oracle Stored Procedure, PL/SQL Stored Procedure, What is Stored Procedure in pl/sql, How to use Stored Procedure in pl/sql, How to write a Stored Procedure in oracle, How to create Stored Procedure in pl/sql, Parameterized stored procedure in pl/sql, Benefit of using stored procedure in oracle, Advantages of Using Stored Procedures: Maintainability (because scripts are in one location, updates and tracking of dependencies based on schema changes becomes easier) Can be tested independent of the application Isolation of Business Rules,(Having Stored Procedures in one location means that there’s no confusion of having business rules spread over potentially disparate code files in the application) Speed / Optimization ( Stored procedures are cached on the server Execution plans for the process are easily reviewable without having to run the application) Utilization of Set-based Processing (The power of SQL is its ability to quickly and efficiently perform set-based processing on large amounts of data; the coding equivalent is usually iterative looping, which is generally much slower) Security ( Limit direct access to tables via defined roles in the database, provide an “interface” to the underlying data structure so that all implementation and even the data itself is shielded. Securing just the data and the code that accesses it is easier than applying that security within the application code itself ). Drawbacks to Using Stored Procedures: Limited Coding Functionality Stored procedure code is not as robust as app code, particularly in the area of looping (not to mention that iterative constructs, like cursors, are slow and processor intensive) Portability issue for complex and large Stored Procedure. Testing :Any data errors in handling Stored Procedures are not generated until runtime Cost :Stored Procedure development could potentially require a dedicated database developer. Some businesses will not allow developers access to the database at all, requiring instead a separate DBA. Alternatives to Stored Procedures: In-line or Parameterized Queries (These are written within the application code itself) Object Relational Mapping (ORM) (Provides an abstraction to the database without having to manually write data ) Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aditya-kumar-roy-b3673368/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SpecializeAutomation/

I also have another collection of videos that cover the other parameter types. Please check those out in the playlist. Time - 00:22 For this tutorial we will use the following table employees. The table has sample data for testing. I have a SQL zip file that you can download. It will create the table, add sample data and also set up the stored procedures. You can download it from the link below. Time - 00:38 Let's learn about INOUT parameters. We will pass in a parameter. The stored procedure will read the parameter and update it with a value. In this example, our DBA created a stored procedure called, "Greet the Department." It's a very simple example. It simply reads the parameter name for the department. All the stored procedure will do is create a new stream based on the department name. It will have the stream, "Hello to the awesome Department Team" and will plug in the value of team. That's it. We could get really fancy and do some sequel calls for the database but for now let's keep it simple. Time - 01:12 To use INOUT parameters, we've prepared the callers before. We use the question mark as a parameter placeholder. Then we register the parameter as an OUT parameter, this supports INOUT. We also specify the type. Since we are passing in a stream we make use of types.varchar. The types interfaces the file in the Java and the SQL package. Then we execute the stored procedure. Once the execution is complete, then we can get the value of the OUT parameter. Time - 01:39 In this case, we retrieve it based on the parameter position. Remember that parameters are one based. This will give us the output from the stored procedure and we display it accordingly. Time - 01:50 Let's switch over to Eclipse and see this in action. I have a simple Java program called, "GreetTheDepartment." Now, let's walk through the code. First, we get a connection to the database. Then we set up a variable for the department name. Then we prepare a callable statements to the stored procedure, with a question mark for the place holder. Then we register the parameter as an OUT parameter. Remember, the OUT parameter here also handles INOUT. Then we set the department name. Next we execute the statement, and it performs the back end update. Finally, we retrieve the value of the OUT parameter and display the result. Time - 02:27 Okay, let me run the application and check the output. Notice we call the stored procedure. We pass in the department name with "Engineering". Then it displays the result, "Hello to the awesome Engineering Team." This is the result of that OUT parameter that came back from the stored procedure. The stored procedure performed as desired. Good job. Time - 02:51 That wraps up our discussion on stored procedures using INOUT parameters. We were successful in calling the stored procedure and passing in those parameters. Stay tune for the next video. I'm going to show more examples of using stored procedures with parameters. Please subscribe to our channel to view more videos on Java. This video covers OUT parameters. --- Transcript Time - 00:00 Hi, this is Chad (Shod) at luv2code.com. Welcome back to another tutorial on Java JDBC. In this video, we will learn how to use store procedures. In this video we're covering OUT parameters. Please check on our other videos that cover the other parameter types, such as IN, INOUT and Returning a result set. Time - 00:21 For this tutorial, we will use the following table, employees. The table has sample data for testing. I have a SQL zip file that you can download. It'll create the table, add sample data and also set up the store procedures. You can download it from the link below. Time - 00:38 Let's learn about OUT parameters. We will call a stored procedure and it will return an output parameter for us. Our DBA created a store procedure called Get Count for department. It is a very simple example that reads the parameter for the department name. The store procedure will return the number of employees in a given department. Time - 00:58 The first parameter is the department name. The second parameter is the output for the count. This is a contrived example. We could do the same thing with a regular SQL statement, but here we're trying to demonstrate out parameters with store procedures. You could develop a more advanced store procedure that could return different types of data. Time - 01:14 To use OUT parameters, we prepare the callers before, using a question mark as a parameter place holder. We set the first input parameter as the name of the department. Next, we register the second parameter as an OUT parameter, since the store procedure will return the OUT parameter as an int, we make use of types.dot integer. Time - 01:33 The types interface is defined in the JAVA.SQL package. Then, we execute the store procedure. Once the execution is complete, then we get the value of the OUT parameter. In this case, we retrieve it based on the parameter position, which is position two. Remember that parameters are one based. This will give us the output from the stored procedure. Time - 01:54 Let's switch over to Eclipse and see this in action. I have a very simple JAVA program called GetCountForDepartment. Let's walk through the code. First thing I'll do is get a connection to the database, set up a variable for the actual department name. Then, I'll prepare a call for the stored procedure, get count for department. I'll make use of two parameter place holders. Time - 02:17 I'll set the first parameter to be the actual name of the department. I'll register the second parameter as an OUT parameter of type integer. Then, I'll execute the stored procedure. Once the procedure's complete, then I'll get the value of the OUT parameter and I'll retrieve position two. Then, I'll simply display the output to the screen. Time - 02:42 All right. Let's go ahead and run the application. Do a right click. I'll just do a run as Java application. That'll give me the output. We can see that we actually called the stored procedure for engineering and it returns the value of four. This means that there are four employees in the engineering department. I can verify this in my SQL editor tool. Time - 03:10 I can make use of a select statement. Select * for engineering. Execute and it gives me the result of four employees, so we know that the stored procedure's working as desire. Time - 03:24 Well, that wraps up our discussion on stored procedures using OUT parameters. We were successful in calling stored procedures and retrieving parameter values. Stay tuned for the next video. I will show more examples of using stored procedures and parameters. Please subscribe to our channel to view more videos on JAVA. Click thumps up to like our video. PL/SQL: Ref cursor Types

07:57
In this tutorial, you'll learn the types of ref cursors.. PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.
