Slick web animations -- Polycasts #23

18:02
Web Animations are a new set of standards to unify CSS and JavaScript animations. With Web Animations you get the power of animating on the GPU while maintaining the control of working in JavaScript. But coordinating all these animations is no easy task and thankfully there’s an element for that—well a behavior actually but stay with me! In this episode I’ll teach you how to use the neon-animation behaviors from the Polymer Element catalog to mixing slick animation behavior without the hassle of managing everything yourself. And with this knowledge we’re all setup to learn about the legendary neon-animated-pages element in a following episode. Today, you can create HTML elements yourself using web components! Polymer is just the tool to help you out here. It helps you create elements easier and comes with some quite handy features like 2-way data binding. To top it off, Polymer comes with a lot of pre-built nice-looking material designed elements, so you can start in a jiffy! -- Recording made possible by Livestream.watch. Color - Style - Google Material Design

01:30
Material Design (codenamed Quantum Paper)[1] is a design language developed in 2014 by Google. Expanding upon the "card" motifs that debuted in Google Now, Material Design makes more liberal use of grid-based layouts, responsive animations and transitions, padding, and depth effects such as lighting and shadows. Overview: Designer Matías Duarte explained that, "unlike real paper, our digital material can expand and reform intelligently. Material has physical surfaces and edges. Seams and shadows provide meaning about what you can touch." Google states that their new design language is based on paper and ink.[2][3][4] Material Design can be used in API Level 21 (Android 5.0) and newer or via the v7 appcompat library, which is used on virtually all Android devices manufactured after 2009.[citation needed] Material Design will gradually be extended throughout Google's array of web and mobile products, providing a consistent experience across all platforms and applications. Google has also released application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers to incorporate the design language into their applications Implementation: As of 2015 most of Google's mobile applications for Android had applied the new design language, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Google Maps, Inbox, Google+, all of the Google Play-branded applications, and to a smaller extent the Chrome browser and Google Keep. The desktop web-interfaces of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Inbox have incorporated it as well. More recently, it has started to appear in Chrome OS, such as in the system settings, file manager, and calculator apps. The canonical implementation of Material Design for web application user interfaces is called Polymer.[8] It consists of the Polymer library, a shim that provides a Web Components API for browsers that do not implement the standard natively, and an elements catalog, including the "paper elements collection" that features visual elements of the Material Design.

Web Components: Just in the Nick of Time (Polymer Summit 2017)

30:20
When Google started the project that developed Web Components back in 2011, the full impact of the mobile revolution hadn't yet been felt. Many tools and frameworks developed in the intervening years inherited desktop-centric assumptions that no longer make sense. What's needed now are approaches that let us build on-time and under budget -- both the development time and performance budget. Web Components were designed to help solve problems we understood from the desktop era, but mobile has pushed us to the limits of our ability and understanding. Do those problems still matter? Alex Russell, a Software Engineer at Google, gives his insights on this topic. But there is no web component for that! by Horacio Gonzalez

29:27
When start working with Web Components, you are often drawn to webcomponents.org site, surprised and delighted to see the number of available custom elements (and their quality). It's a nice phase, you choose your custom elements, gather them, and build your app like if you were working with LEGO bricks. Then you begin to get more proficient with Web Components, writing more complex apps, with exotic features, and sooner or later you will be face to a feature for which there is no available component. Or better said, for which there is no web component yet... because you are going to write it! In this talk we show how to easily transform a JS library in a web component by wrapping the library with a Polymer envelope, and how that element will be as simple to use as any other component of the catalog. And in order to do it, I'm going to use two real life custom elements that I wrote to use in the Devoxx Lead Scan app. # Horacio Gonzalez Spaniard lost in Brittany, unconformist coder, Java craftsman, dreamer and all-around geek. Juicebox Music Bangalore / India https://soundcloud.com/juiceboxmusic-in http://juiceboxmusic.in/ https://www.facebook.com/juiceboxmusic.in https://www.beatport.com/label/juicebox-music/31239 .......................... Kicking off Juicebox Music for 2017 is our 17th release, a single titled 'Mellifluous' from Fábio Pereira aka Li-Polymer. The Madeira (Portugal) based artist makes a come-back to the label after his stellar remix of 'Esensides - Drift Away' last year. With a growing discography including releases on "Movement", "Soundteller" and Hernan Cattaneo's "Sudbeat" along with highly-acclaimed remixes, his productions has now become a staple in countless DJ's record bags. Li-Polymer's latest offering, 'Mellifluous', is a haunting and moody number, with a nice chunky groove that sounds soothing to the ear while at the same time, sonically impactful with it's heavy low-end and crisp percussion. Staying true to the organic quality that we've known him for. We called upon Germany's Konstantin Alt, aka LoQuai, for his debut appearance on the label as the first remixer. As a progressive house veteran, his understanding of the musical space and grooves has earned his music to be found in many labels like Balkan Connection, Particles, Bonzai Progressive, Stellar Fountain as well as his very own Refined Tunes. LoQuai stays true to Li-Polymer's original mood and groove, reworking it in his own sound while subtlety adding a new atmospheric dimension and delicate groove edits to reflect his vision. The second remix comes from India's very own Karthik Sivasankar, aka Tatsama, who makes his return to the label after his track 'Open Spaces' on the 'Elements - Volume 1' release caught the attention of many. Following which, he's put out some captivating music on Suffused Music and Wind Horse Records. Showing his diversity and unlike his more laid back 'Open Spaces', Tatsama shifts into a higher gear for his interpretation of 'Mellifluous' with an aggressive drive, shuffled grooves and restless euphoric break yet staying restrained and composed with it's delivery.

Beyond Polymer: a comparison of web components libraries

57:12
The W3C has been working on a Web Components standard for almost three years, but it is still a work in progress. But polyfills like allows current developers to use Web Components today, and incorporate to their apps widgets from any library of web components. The best known of these libraries is Polymer, but it isn't the only one. In this talk we are going to compare Polymer, the '800 lb gorilla' in the Web Component field, with several of its lesser known competitors: Mozilla's X-Tags and Briks, and Bosomic. We will compare the catalogue of components, the difficulty of creating your own components using each library, and (of course) the performance cost of each solution. And we will take a look to the performances in both Chrome and Firefox.

Polymer @ YouTube (Polymer Summit 2017)

22:40
Over one billion hours of video are watched on YouTube daily, and the desktop YouTube site is built using Polymer. That brings with it some unique constraints and scalability challenges. The YouTube site is comprised of over 400 web components, developed by dozens of teams. In this video, YouTube Software Engineers Ziling Zhao and Mikhail Sychev explain how they were built. DrupalCon Vienna 2017: Component Driven Frontend Development

27:22
Pages are dead - long live components. Do you recognise any of the following problems: Designers design pages which then need to be broken up by frontend developers Elements of a page are poorly named or misunderstood Static HTML prototypes and style guides produced early in the project can't be easily ported into the backend CMS The static prototype and real site begin to drift away from each other as the project goes on, there is no longer a clear representation of the frontend The Drupal theme becomes complicated and confused. The design has become lost in translation and walls of indirection have sprung up between design and development teams. This talk describes a component based approach to web design and development. Rather than having the designers design some key pages of a site, get them to design components instead. Breaking things down into small and easily identifiable pieces or 'componentisation' is a practice used by developers and designers alike to help them solve complex problems. With a component based approach your development team can maintain a catalogue of templates independent of the backend CMS. When the backend work starts, these components will then be integrated into Drupal. This talk will describe a method for doing this which does not cause complex themes or copying pieces of template code out of the frontend prototypes. This talk will cover: The general approach to component based development A method for developing components independent of the backend system which will be used How to integrate the components with Drupal 8 An overview of the advantages of this approach

Marge Margulies Pottery The intent of my ceramic work is to create organic, flowing compositions which serve as lively and useful centerpieces. In these random and conscious groupings, which resemble things found in nature, elements of shape are combined, emphasizing fluid forms and rich, subtle color relationships. All pieces are individual works of art and are subject to the whims of the artist and nature. Contact me anytime at [email protected] or call me at 707-604-7392 US Pacific Coast
