Starbucks are a mega force in the coffee world, having well over 11,500 shops worldwide. Their logo has become cemented into the modern high street- with multiple shops readily available in major cities such as London, Paris and New York. Although Starbucks clearly are the biggest grossing company in the restaurant sector of the coffee industry, they were missing a huge market in retail. With brands such as Nescafe and Kenco having the edge over Starbucks with their standard filtered coffee stacking the shelves of Tesco, Morrsions, Asda and Lidl. Starbucks decided to branch out to compete with these companies. Although they seeked help in doing so. That’s when they began their work with London’s famous Pearlfisher branding agency. Pearlfisher have previously worked with a number of easily recognisable and everyday brands, including the likes of Havana Club, Jim Beam, Cadbury and Innocent among more. What do the brands have in common on Pearlfishers roster? They are all trusted and therefor have become leaders in their market. In order to retrieve this trust you have to form a relationship with the customer over a period of time. For example Coca Cola are a company who have managed to gain a huge level of trust that they are in fact the company with the best Cola product in the world. They have done this by major investment into advertisements and celebrity endorsement. Even coming up with the idea of incorporating Santa Claus into their advertising, which stimulates the idea that Coca Cola is a trusted family brand. Having this sort of development into the image of the company will help them in sales opportunities, e.g. if an individual was told to pick up fizzy drinks when at the supermarket, when deciding what product to choose, it’s highly likely that the individual will gravitate towards Coca Cola, due to the trust that they see in the brand; “Millions of people can’t be wrong.” As you can see in the slideshow, Pearlfisher have chosen easy on the eye colours, nothing too bold to give Starbucks a classy natural look on the shelves. Opting to dedicate all your products to these particular colour pallets will over time give Starbucks a recognisable appearance to customers and leads – Due to the development and exposure of the Starbucks logo, Pearlfisher have decided to make the logo on the products stand out bold. You know you have an important trade show coming up and you could meet a buyer for a HUGE retail chain that could change your life if you are prepared for that sales pitch... when you're busy running product development sales for a huge brand OR leading a start-up you barely have time to sleep, let alone think through how these differences should apply to your brand. Oftentimes sales flat-line because a brand is being RE-ACTIVE instead of PRO-ACTIVE for their next sales presentation. If you're selling the identical products, packaging and serving sizes you sold last year... don't expect any sales growth. So how do you prepare for your next trade show or sales pitch of your CPG product? How should you plan your sales strategy for next year so you're prepared to meet with any retail buyer and close that PO? I'd like to suggest you should start here: 1) Identify what stores you're currently in and where you want to be next year 2) Consider what type packaging, serving sizes and displays are in these new stores 3) Create this type of packaging for your product (design it, cost it out, figure out the palletization and case pack, etc. Calculate and plan out all the information that retail buyer for your target customer will need in order to feel confident you are ready to handle their order). 4) Create a sales presentation tailored for each retailer type highlighting these packaging differences that are perfect for them - that includes all the answers you figured out in step #3 The outcome of your strategization session will be different packaging, prices, serving sizes etc for different retail types... which will result in NEW sales. I guarantee it. I've seen it for every client we've worked for. It's important to PRO-ACTIVE in order to capture new customers and open up new shelves. We both bought off Amazon, for similar prices, and I was shocked when I looked at the difference in packaging. The salt lamps themselves aren't that different, but the packaging gives one the impression of being high quality and special, while the other....doesn't. It definitely has got me thinking about what I can do to make my packaging stand out from the crowd. This can be tough because a competitors packaging isn't necessarily obvious, so unless you buy products from all your competitors, you likely don't know what you are competing with. So instead of worrying so much about what others are doing, focus on your idea client. How do you want them to feel when they get your product in the mail? If you're selling cabinet hardware, you probably don't care about presentation too much. Your client is going to rip open a bag and install the hardware. But if you're selling baby clothes, then you do want to create an impression on that new mom - hopefully one that has her coming back to your brand again and again and telling her friends about it as well.
