Here it is in a nutshell: Spin it out, keep it clean, take the money from the service company, invest it in the product company. Build a new team if possible (so you’re not pulling that team back in to other client work) and really allow it to thrive and grow. By all means, if there are opportunities to refer customers to the product, help them out, or give any other resources, etc. You want to do that because you have a vested interested in seeing it be successful. Now what you have to remember is that the people who are on the panel are successful business owners and entrepreneurs in their own right so have seen it, done it, and have a good idea what makes a good product or service. That is why they are often amazed by some of the people who pitch on the show. How often do we see a pitch about a product or service for which there will never be a demand! And sadly, more often than not, these same people have invested everything they own to 'create' this product that will never find a buyer. It's as simple as this ... if you want to make money to have to sell your goods or services to other people, your target audience. But they can only be your target audience if your goods or services match their needs or wants. Every selling proposition moves a potential customer either closer to desire or further away from pain so your products or solutions have to be tailored to their needs or wants. You should be looking at your products or services and seeing have they fit in with what your clients want and not with what you want, or your family wants, or even what your employees want. Let's have a look at some examples to illustrate the point I'm trying to make .... 1. You're a self-employed plumber who insists that your customers pay cash and there's no paper work ... your customers actually want a receipt and written guarantee with the option to pay with a debit card 2. You're a self-employed plumber who doesn't take cash, provides a receipt for all of your work, and gives a guarantee ... your customers want the cheapest possible price and want to pay cash 3. You design a rain proof coat from a special material meaning that it is dry again within minutes no matter how wet it is. Comes with a hefty price tag ... your customers are happy with an inexpensive fold away coat These aren't particularly great examples but what I'm trying to do is illustrate the fact that you can't sell what your audience doesn't want or need. So in practical terms what do your products or services do to meet the needs or wants of your target market? Are there things you could add to your service that would increase the positive experience of your customer? Actions Take a look at the products or services you offer to your customers and check ... Are you providing the ideal service or product for your customers ... for example, if you sold wood flooring do you provide a delivery service? 1. Could you improve your customers experience ... for example if you sold wood flooring could you provide videos on your website or from the manufacturer on how to fit it correctly? Could you happily recommend tradesmen who would enhance or compliment your local brand to ensure it is fitted properly thereby giving them the floor they dreamed about? 2. If you do provide 'free' delivery do you offer a discount if they take it away themselves for customers who want the keenest prices? 3. Could you create sample packs of your flooring with a deposit (to encourage them to return to your business) so that they can go home with the samples and choose the exact colour or finish they wanted? 4. Take that one step further ... could you send someone to their house (by appointment) to show them a selected range and receive advice on which way the floor could be laid to reduce costs or achieve a better finish? Final Note Don't forget, as a local business owner, the greatest source of information for all of these types of questions are your current customers. As them what they thought of your service, your products etc. What would they have been willing t pay more for and what would did they not like paying for? Answering these questions will enable you to provide a range of products or services. Again, as an example using the flooring we were discussing earlier ... Product A - discounted price on your flooring, take it away today Product A - regular price with free delivery Product A - premium price with free delivery and free fitting by guaranteed tradesman It doesn't matter what you sell or do, every product or service can have various price points and packages. Take the time to look at your business if you are providing the goods or services your customers are looking for or are they going elsewhere, to your competitors because you don't meet their needs? When you show the prospect the price, how do you show a return on their investment when they aren't receiving a tangible good? Anytime we show a price to a client we need to prove that the price is far less than then amount of value the client will receive. When value is greater than price the prospect will buy. But this can become incredibly tricky if the prospect has never used a service like yours before, or perhaps up until this point they have done your service in their business for free. A great example is companies that are trying to sell social media agency services. Most companies start out by completing all their social media in house on their own. Prospects will often look at this as a "free" service they have been able to provide themselves for years. Why then would they need to pay someone to do something they have done for free for themselves? The best way to show value is to look creatively. What is the value of the person's time that is doing the social media in house? Break down their hourly wage based on monthly revenue. Find out how many hours they devote to social media, and show them a savings or a break-even based on what your company will charge. Take it a step further by showing them the potential revenue the prospect can bring in if you were able to sell a small product online. With a historic or predicted conversion rate you were able to provide your clients, you could say that a "2% conversion for a $10 product would bring you in $X". If that additional revenue brought in is greater than the cost of your services, the client will be more excited about moving forward. The prospect will then be able to compare their "free" time to your solution. Ensure they understand that their time isn't really free. It should be better spent on revenue generating activities, or other visionary, value-add, tasks within the company. Then compare it to the cost of your services PLUS any additional revenue you can help bring in for the client. It's a platform for managing, storing, and processing data online through the internet. Some of the cloud computing features include the following: - On-Demand Services – Available when you need it - Network Access – When using the internet as your medium - Shared Resources – All resources are gathered together and used by multiple customers - Scalability - The ability of a computer system to adapt to increasing demands The Three Delivery Models: Cloud computing provides different services based on three delivery configurations. When they are arranged in a pyramid structure, they are in the order of SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS. The Three Services: #SaaS - Software as a Service This service provides on-demand pay per use of the application software for users and is independent of a platform. You do not have to install software on your computer, unlike a license paid program. Cloud runs a single occurrence of the software, making it available for multiple end-users allowing the service to be cheap. All the computing resources that are responsible for delivering SaaS are totally managed by the vendor. The service is accessible through a web browser or lightweight client applications. End customers use SaaS regularly. The most popular SaaS providers offer the following products and services: Google Ecosystem including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Microsoft Office 365, and SalesForce. #PaaS - Platform as a Service This service is mostly a development environment that is made up of a programming language execution environment, an operating system, web server, and database. It provides an environment where users can build, compile, and run their program without worrying about an hidden infrastructure. You manage the data and application resources. All the other resources are managed by the vendor. This is the realm for developers. PaaS providers offer the following products and services: Amazon Web services, Elastic Beanstalk, Google App Engine, Windows Azure, Heroku, and Force.com #IaaS - Infrastructure as a Service This service provides the architecture and infrastructure. It provides all computing resources but in a virtual environment so multiple users can have access. The resources include data storage, virtualization, servers, and networking. Most vendors are responsible for managing them. If you use this service, you are responsible for handling other resources including applications, data, runtime, and middleware. This is mostly for SysAdmins. IaaS providers offer the following products and services: Amazon EC2, Go Grid, and Rackspace.com. Here is a short list of some companies that use cloud computing: iCloud – Cloud from Apple is for Apple products. You can backup and store everything from multimedia to documents online. The content is then smoothly integrated onto your devices. Amazon's AWS - When you talk about companies using cloud computing, Amazon Web Services leads the pack. It offers IaaS and PaaS to all their customers. Google Cloud – This cloud platform is universal for Google's enormous ecosystem and for other products such as Microsoft Office. It provides storage of data and collaboration along with other services that are included in their cloud computing suite. Microsoft Azure – Offered by Microsoft, it provides SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS for its software and developer tools. If you have used Office 365, then you have used SaaS. IBM Smart Cloud - This offers private, public, and hybrid distribution platforms providing a full range of SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS cloud computing services for businesses. The pay as you go platform generates profits for IBM. New technology is popping up all over the internet and Cloud seems to be on the rise. Is your product comparable to theirs? Is it better? Is it worse? Do you have the same feature sets? Do you have fewer features? If your product is easier to use, it has all the same features, and it's higher quality, you can price your product at the same price as your competition or higher. Now, if your product has fewer features than the competition or your service has fewer features, it's not as good, you don't want to be in the same price point. Ideally, you want to be lower. It's just common sense, right? 1:41 Optimal Price Tip #2 Now, the second tip I have for you and this is if you wanna maximize how much income you're making and profit versus capturing the majority of the market because the first tip I gave you, if you wanna put your price lower than the competition when your product's better, it's a great way to gobble up their market share but on the flip side, if you're trying to optimize for profitability, what you wanna do is split test your pricing. You can use Crazy Egg, and you can use Optimizely, VWO. Pick A/B testing tool. Create two pages of your product or service at different price points and keep playing with the price. You can increase it, and you can decrease it. Usually, you want to start off increasing it, and you want to see, alright, can I generate the same amount of sales with the higher price point? If you can, then you want to go with the higher price point then you don't want to stop there just because you got more sales on the front end.
