The LIKE operator is used in a WHERE clause to search for a specified pattern in a column. There are two wildcards used in conjunction with the LIKE operator: % - The percent sign represents zero, one, or multiple characters _ - The underscore represents a single character Note: MS Access uses a question mark (?) instead of the underscore (_). The percent sign and the underscore can also be used in combinations! LIKE Syntax SELECT column1, column2, ... FROM table_name WHERE columnN LIKE pattern; Tip: You can also combine any number of conditions using AND or OR operators. You use the LIKE operator to retrieve rows that match a string pattern. The Mask for a LIKE phrase can contain special symbols called "wildcards". Masks aren't case-sensitive. In contrast to the LIKE operator, the REGEXP operator allows you to create complex string patterns known as regular expressions. It’s similar to the TO_NUMBER, TO_DATE, and TO_CHAR functions, but allows for more functionality, including converting to many other data types. The syntax of the CAST function is: CAST( {expr | MULTISET (subquery) } AS type_name ) The structure of this function is different to other functions, because it uses the word AS to separate parameters rather than a comma. You can run this function like many other functions, on a single row, which would look like this: CAST( expr AS type_name ) Or, you can run it as though it’s a subquery, using the MULTISET feature: CAST( MULTISET (subquery) AS type_name ) The parameters of the CAST function are: - expr (mandatory choice): This is the value or expression that is to be converted to another data type. - MULTISET (optional): This keyword indicates that the subquery results will return multiple rows, and are then CAST into a collection value. If this is omitted, and the subquery returns multiple rows, it will only return a single row. - subquery (mandatory choice): This is the subquery that can be run to be converted into a collection data type. - type_name (mandatory): This is the Oracle data type that the expr or subquery will be converted to. Basics of Regular Expressions Find the word expression in a given string. This will also match with the word expressions. expression To find the word "expression" as a whole word, include \b on either sides of the word expression \bexpression\b \d indicates to find a digit. To find a 5 digit number we could use the following \b\d\d\d\d\d\b We can avoid the repetition of \d by using curly braces as shown below. \d{5} means repeat \d 5 times. \b\d{5}\b The above example can also be rewritten as shown below. \b[0-9]{5}\b Find all the words with exactly 5 letters \b[a-zA-Z]{5}\b Brackets are used to find a range of characters [a-z] - Find any of the characters between the brackets [0-9] - Find any of the digits between the brackets. Also, the searches performed by the INSTR function are case-sensitive. The value returned by INSTR is a number value, which is the number in the location of the string where the substring is found. The first character is 1.
