Gorgonian Sea Fan Corals

03:36
An often-overlooked category of corals is the Gorgonians. They include both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic sea fans as well as sea whips that grow in a corkscrew shape. Hopefully this quick video was helpful for you guys considering sea fans for your reef tank. They provide some really cool aesthetics and you can even make a Caribbean themed tank with these. If you have further questions about these, post them in the comments below. Check out http://www.tidalgardens.com for information or if you want to buy corals for your reef tank. Abanico de Mar (Gorgonia flabellum) Sea fan

00:58

Let's talk about Purple Brush Gorgonian, one of my favorite corals!

08:54
I have always been a huge fan of Gorgonians, the Purple Brush Gorgonian in particular strikes the perfect balance between beauty and ease of care. Many reefers tend to overlook gorgonians, but they are some of the best corals to add some contrasting vertical forms to your reef tank!

How to Frag Gorgonian aka Sea Fan Corals - Coral Cutting Tutorial

03:49
Here's a quick tutorial on how to frag Gorgonian corals (also known as Sea Fan Corals). For this project you'll just need a razor blade, super glue and a container of salt water to rinse the Gorgonian afterwards. In this video I'm fragging a photosynthetic Gorgonian. Note that some Gorgonians have rigid skin on the exterior that can be glued directly to a rock, this video mainly applies to soft skin Gorgonians. I recommend using Fast Set (aka Insta-Set) to cure the super glue faster. You can find Insta-Set on my Amazon page: https://www.amazon.com/shop/what_the_frag?listId=1JWU3MJLFB11O Purchases made on my Amazon page provide a small kickback that goes to support the page. These sea fans are seen on the reef drop offs of Chagos particularly where currents are strong. They spread their branches perpendicular to the prevailing current so that the tiny polyps on their branches have the best chance to gather food from the water that washes through.

Purple Sea Fan - Speedpaint

04:04
~1 hr 20 min Hey all! I got inspired to do a small coral thing after reading a comment from my "Mini Moss" speedpaint! The eyes are a little hard to see here... so I still need to work on values. This was done in between animating Nathaniel's idle animation to avoid running motivation dry. Sometimes it's good to work and then do what your brain wants! Common Sea Fan

00:32
Sightings of what was once as widespread as their common name suggest, fields of the Caribbean Common Sea Fan, gorgonia ventalina, have been replaced by the occasional solitary individual. This die-off has been largely due to the fungal disease, Aspergillosis; a land-based fungus that enters the marine environment via storm water run off and by atmospheric deposition. Blueberry Sea Fan

00:25
The Blueberry Sea Fan is also referred to as the Blue Gorgonia or Blue Tree coral. Blue is a very unusual coloration for any coral, and this Sea Fan will make a great showpiece or centerpiece to any reef aquarium. The red or orange base color with intense blue polyps differentiates this variety from other sea fans. The Blueberry Sea Fan is peaceful, but it should be given adequate space away from neighboring corals or anemones. It is more challenging to maintain this species, as they require supplemental feeding several times per week. This Sea fan is not photosynthetic and requires a low level of lighting to ward off a build-up of microalgae. It also requires a stronger water flow and the addition of iodine, calcium, strontium, and other trace elements to the water. Because the Blueberry Sea Fan is not photosynthetic, its survival is dependent on regular and frequent feedings of micro-plankton, live, baby brine shrimp, or foods designed for filter feeding invertebrates.  This Sea Fan should only be maintained by the skilled reef aquarist in a well established reef.

GORGONIAN ALOR INDONESIA

00:34
Gorgonacea is an order of sessile colonial cnidarian found throughout the oceans of the world, especially in the tropics and subtropics. Gorgonians are also known as sea whips or sea fans and are similar to the sea pen, a soft coral. Gorgonians are closely related to, but technically not coral, themselves. Individual tiny polyps form colonies that are normally erect, flattened, branching, and reminiscent of a fan. Others may be whiplike, bushy, or even encrusting. A colony can be several feet high and across but only a few inches thick. They may be brightly coloured, often purple, red, or yellow. Photosynthetic gorgonians can be successfully kept in captive reef aquariums. The name "Gorgonacea" is no longer considered valid and Alcyonacea is now the accepted name for the order. Filmed by Andres Gluzgold, Nikon d600 + 16-35 mm lens.

Gorgonian Gardens

02:52
Villefranche Bay, Cap Ferrat and Cap Nice boast many beautiful and extensive gardens of sea fans or gorgonians. At depths of 40m to 60m the diversity differs in various locations but are mainly the Purple or Red (Paramuricea clavata), White (Eunicella singularis) and Yellow (Eunicella cavolinii) gorgonians. Whilst diving on these sites one often comes across Mediterranean feather-stars (Antedon mediterranea) which use the gorgonians to anchor themselves in a current. In deeper water one also comes across the Gorgon’s Head or Basket Starfish (Gorgonocephalus) which also attaches itself to the gorgonians in order entrap food passing in the current.

The large gorgonian sea fan towards the stern.

Just past cargo hold 7 there is a large gorgonian fan coral, the video begins midship near the engine room cut along the gunnel, passing by many sea whips that grow along the starboard side to the stern. Following those infamous pink fins of Yvonne Ritchie, a wonderful dive on the SS.President Coolidge. It's a long deco after the dive, always enjoyable to pass the time at Allan Power's coral garden. Music by Southes from the album 'Tidal', tracks are 'Water' and 'Marea'.

Non-photosynthetic Coral Feeding System

03:59
This is our first major attempt at providing constant feeding to a tank with primarily non-photosynthetic corals. Our goal is to be able to grow and propagate traditionally difficult species such as Dendronephthya and filter-feeding sea fans. We are using a dosing pump in a small refrigerator to provide regular feeding from three sources of liquid food. The refrigerator is necessary to keep the food from spoiling.
