Sea Urchin Sting Removal Attempt - Maui Hawaii - Daredevil Girl

I got to experience a sea urchin sting. It was very painful. I was snorkeling on Maui, Hawaii. A popular remedy for sea urchin stings is vinegar. Vinegar is great to keep around the house for many things. Sea urchin sting and spine removal remedies: Vinegar https://amzn.to/2Mp0kpg Lemon Juice https://amzn.to/2sSBmXr Witch Hazel https://amzn.to/2Mnwhyu Neosporin https://amzn.to/2JNcYAg Hydro-cortisone Cream https://amzn.to/2Mn2y8Q Urine *no link available* Water Shoes Aqua Socks https://amzn.to/2Mp4HRc Amy Chmelecki (Team Red Bull Air Force) filmed this sea urchin spine video during the Team Icarus Evolution project. We were all across the street from our condo spending some leisure time snorkeling in the ocean. I spotted an underwater arch/cave looking reef thing about 20ft deep. I was in the water with Wyat Drewes, my fiance at the time. I said, "Hey Wyat watch this. I'm going to swing under that reef arch!" I held my breath and swam down to swim under the arch. As I approached it, I was a little apprehensive. But I had to go through with it. From up at the surface it looked harmless. Once I got closer, it was a little scary looking. It was dark under there and I started thinking about eels. I went for it anyways. As I swam through it the water shifted and that scared me. It felt like I was going to get pushed into the coral. So I panicked and kicked really hard to swim out of there fast! I kicked the top of the reef arch with my heel and ouch that hurt!! Wyat was watching me and as I swam to the surface he could tell something was wrong. The sea urchin spikes went through my flipper. Wyat held me up in the water so we could look at my heel. It was ugly. Big long spikes were sticking out of my heel. I didn't know what it was and thought it was maybe something poisonous that I could die from. Wyat helped me swim to shore. Fruitcake (Jason Peters) and Amy Chmelecki came over to help. We weren't sure if I needed to go to the emergency room so we called our good friend Jimmy Hall who was a shark diving ocean expert. We described what happened and he said, "Oh that's just a sea urchin (uni). It will hurt, but it's not poisonous." Boy oh boy was I relieved!! So Wyat and Fruitcake helped me walk to our condo across the street. Then the sea urchin spike removal surgery began. Amy filmed this video and laughed at my pain. Wyat tried to removed the spikes the best he could, but they were brittle and kept breaking off. I sucked it up, dealt with the pain and we continued our awesome Hawaii project/vacation. The sea urchin spikes left a tattoo in my heel that lasted for about 2-3 weeks. What a trip! Now I know what it's like to get the wrath of the mighty sea urchin! This happened in 2003. Jimmy Hall died May 9, 2007 (Wyat's 33rd birthday) in a base jumping incident. Wyat Drewes died August 10, 2007 in a motorcycle accident. RIP boys! Sea Urchin Sting Removal - 10 Advices How to Treat a Sea Urchin Sting

10:07
Sea urchins are colorful marine creatures with sharp spines all over their shells. Although the majority of sea urchins don't contain venom—most effects of sea urchin stings are from the puncture wounds caused by the animal's pointed spines—the combination of sting and venom causes wide-ranging effects. Whether you accidentally step on a sea urchin or if you handle one carelessly, you can get stung. Sea urchins are venomous, so prompt and proper care is important. In the event of a sea urchin sting, stay calm and follow protocol to avoid serious infection. Sea urchins are present worldwide. Most sea urchin injuries result when spines break off in the skin and cause local tissue reactions. Without treatment, the spines may migrate into deeper tissues, causing a granulomatous nodular lesion, or they may wedge against bone or nerve. Joint and muscle pain and dermatitis may also occur. A few sea urchins (eg, Globiferous pedicellariae) have calcareous jaws with venom organs, enabling them to inject venom, but injuries are rare. Diagnosis is usually obvious by history. A bluish discoloration at the entry site may help locate the spine. X-rays can help when the location is not obvious during examination. How to remove sea urchin spine.

03:21
How to remove sea urchin spine. Sea urchins are spiny sea creatures that are round and covered with very sharp needles called "spines;" depending on the species some of these spines can emit toxins. Typically seen in coastal and reef waters, many people become impaled on sea urchin spines while surfing, scuba diving or even walking in shallow waters. Almost all sea urchin venom (secreted from the pedicellaria organs) and their spines are non lethal, but can be extremely painful. A common place to get them is on the foot or the hand - from stepping on an urchin or falling off of a surfboard. The spines can go very deep into your skin and because they are brittle can sometimes be very difficult to remove without breaking off the tip. If you do get impaled by urchin spines, here are some tips of how to treat them until you can get medical attention. Steps to Treat Sea Urchin Injury 1) Apply a topical antiseptic to clean and disinfect the wound until you can get to a clean comfortable place to apply further treatment - hydrogen peroxid. 2)You can try to remove the spines with pliers or tweezers, though the spines may be too flush with the skin to get good purchase. For simple punctures that look like the spines are protruding and can be easily pulled out, gently remove them. Also, as mentioned earlier, the spines can be very brittle and may be very hard to remove without breaking.

Student paralyzed after sea urchin sting

00:35
Callum Hall, a 20-year-old from the UK, was vacationing on the Island of Skiathos when he was stung by a sea urchin. Hall was jumping out of the back of a boat when he felt something like a "bee sting" on his toe. Hall removed three sea urchin spines from his big toe and didn't think much more about the incident. Three weeks later, the trainee PE teacher developed a rare infection on his spinal cord due to the sea urchin sting. An abscess twice the size of a tennis ball burst, nearly killing Hall, and ended up paralyzing him from the waist down. After performing life-saving surgery, Doctors told Hall he has a small chance of ever being able to walk again. Hall now has some movement in his abdomen, and can wiggle his toes. He aims to prove his doctors wrong by one day walking again.

About 950 species inhabit all oceans, and zones from the intertidal to 5,000 metres (16,000 ft; 2,700 fathoms) deep.[1] Their tests (hard shells) are round and spiny, typically from 3 to 10 cm (1.2 to 3.9 in) across. Sea urchins move slowly, crawling with their tube feet, and defended by their sharp spines, which are sometimes toxic. They feed primarily on algae but also eat slow-moving or sessile animals. Their predators include sea otters, starfish, wolf eels, and triggerfish. The name "urchin" is an old word for hedgehog, which sea urchins resemble; they have archaically been called sea hedgehogs.[2][3] The name is derived from Old French herichun, from Latin ericius, hedgehog.[4] Email: [email protected] Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqBho4rDGlST_PY5I2Bh9yQ?sub_confirmation=1 👣 Fight Plantar Fasciitis: https://wiivv.com?discount=GILMORE20 🔔 Fan Page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn8flUm7L1I71mpN_3vmxHA?sub_confirmation=1 🔔 All Star Doctors: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaqFSp5MMEobRHB-nVXpXKg?sub_confirmation=1 Interested in Dr. G's vitamins? Sea urchin spine removal from feet How to Remove Sea Urchin spines Sea urchins are spiny sea creatures that are round and covered with very sharp needles called "spines;" depending on the species some of these spines can emit toxins. Thanks for Watching my new Video, hope u all like it.. Hi all, Here's the link for my other video using a different opening method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2KLJxY2Awg There are many ways to open sea urchin for the delicate uni roe. However, the correct way might not always be the best way when you are trying to open it at home & especially for your first time! Personally, I have opened 15 sea urchins at home before. I think my method is better than the correct method. It yields better results and it's not as messy as smashing the urchin with a big knife. They are non-aggressive marine animals found all over the world. They live in shallow, rocky bottoms, or hide in sandy cervices. Human contact with sea urchins is either accidental or intentional. People accidentally step on them in shallow surf, or intentionally pick up the urchins, unaware that they must handle the spines with care to avoid injury. Sea Urchin Facts: 18 Facts about Sea Urchins

04:16
Here are 18 facts about Sea Urchins to help gain a better understanding of these incredible creatures. They are a fascinating species far different from any other species we know, and here we delve into the wonder of these wonderful creatures. Synopsis There are around 200 species of sea urchins that are found across oceans around the world Sea urchins are found in warmer waters on ocean floors close to coral reefs They are a threatened species due to overfishing and pollution They range in size from between 1.2 to 3.9 inches in diameter. They have globe like shape which is covered in long spines and their bodies have a radial symmetry. They are protected by a shell formed of bony plates providing protection for the softer inner organs. They vary in colour depending in the species of the sea urchin. However the majority are black, brown, purple, red or green in color. They have five rows of paired feet on the underside of their body. These feet have suckers in them which means they can grip the ocean floor. Amongst the spines on their bodies are claw like structures which are known as pedicellariae that are used for protection against predators and also to collect food. There are species of sea urchin that also have spikes that are filled with venom They have a unique type of mouth called "Aristotle's lantern". The mouth has five sharp teeth which they use to drill holes in rocks They are omnivores by nature consuming both animals and plant life such as algae sea weed plankton and Other orgainc mattet The main predators of sea urchins are humans sunflower stars crabs fish birds and Sea urchins mate in the spring time and reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm cells in to the water in a process called external fertilization. the Fertilized egg will then go through a larval stage before it becomes a grown adult. Whilst the sea urchin is in its larval stage It will swim with other types of tiny creatures as part of zooplankton Sea urchins live up to 30 years. In fact the red sea urchin lives up to 200 years making it the longest living creature Sea urchins are not aggressive creatures however if they are touched most sea urchins will try to defend themselves using their spines and some species have spines that can pierce a divers suit. Some species like thr purple sea urchin, have an another defense mechanism called thepedicellarines which are tiny, jaw-like structures which clasp onto a diver's skin and inject a powerful poison. They are nestled down between re spines and are difficult to come into contact with unless the diver impales them self on it

How to Catch and Eat Sea Urchins

05:58
Tired of going to the restaurant to get your uni? This video answers the questions: What are sea urchins? What do you need to catch sea urchins? How do you catch sea urchins? How do you prepare sea urchins? And How do you eat sea urchins? Snap me: AxeMadagio Twitter: https://twitter.com/MaxAdagio Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maxadagio/ Sea Urchins are small, spiny animals that live all across the world’s oceans. Where can you catch sea urchins? They can live in shallow or deep, hot or cold water—so you can find them pretty much anywhere. What do sea urchins eat? They feed on a wide range of foods: mussels, sea sponges, starfish are all fair game, but, the most wholesome sea urchin diet consists of algae. They have spherical bodies covered with spines that, in some species can reach up to a foot in length. The spines are jointed at the root and assist in protection and movement. The urchin’s main mode of transport, though, are its hundreds of adhesive tube feet, radiating from around the bottom of it’s shell up to it’s mouth. The minority of sea urchin species are venomous and only one species, the innocuously named “Flower Urchin,” has been known to be deadly. What you need to catch sea urchins: The kit for catching sea urchins is extremely simple 1. Goggles: that one’s pretty self explanitory 2. Knife: really, anything hard and slender will work. You can use a screwdriver or even a spoon. Anything that can pry. 3. Bag. Something breathable or meshy works best. You want to be carrying the sea urchins with you, not water. And that’s it! You need goggles, a knife and a bag and you’re ready to get amongst it! How do you catch sea urchins? Safety first. Depending on the location and types of the sea urchins you’re going after, this activity can be dangerous. Watch out for ocean currents that could take you over or into rocks and keep your knife sheathed or closed if you’re not using it. The spines of sea urchins themselves are not venomous but they can be painful if you don’t handle them gently. Gloves are a good addition to your kit if you have them. Sea urchins are largely nocturnal so they hide in the crevices between rocks during the day. Once you spot one, swim down to it and push your implement underneath its body, then pry it off whatever it’s holding on to. Some sea urchins are stuck on the rocks or in their crevices very strongly, and others aren’t! If one is stuck really tightly in a crevice, I find it best to move on, it’s not worth your energy and you don’t want to damage an animal that you are not going to eat. If you’re in a place with many sea urchins, you’ll be able to find an easier, more vulnerable one down the line. You will pretty much never have need to cut the sea urchin, just get underneath of it, pry it off, and put it in your bag. Once you’ve harvested enough to fill your bag or your stomach, you’re ready to prepare them to eat! Preparing and Eating Sea Urchins What we are after is the yellow/orange sea urchin roe, or eggs. Sea Urchins, like all other organic matter, begin deteriorating as soon as they die, so you’ll want to prepare the urchins soon after they are out of the water. Cutting a large, circular hole around the underside of the urchin is the best way to keep the edible part intact, but if you’re not as worried about presentation, I find it quickest and easiest to make two cuts into the shell of the urchin, allowing you to simply break it in half to retrieve the meat. You can use a spoon to retrieve the edible, reproductive part of the animal, but I find that using your fingers can be more effective, especially because the roe quite delicate. Across most of the world, sea urchins are eaten raw. In different countries, raw urchins are complimented by different ingredients: lemon, oil, soy sauce and wasabi are all used. In the mediterranian region, sea urchin is also used to flavor sauces.

The name "urchin" is an old word for hedgehog, which sea urchins resemble; they have archaically been called sea hedgehogs.[2][3] The name is derived from Old French herichun, from Latin ericius, hedgehog.[4] Email: johngilm[email protected] Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqBho4rDGlST_PY5I2Bh9yQ?sub_confirmation=1 👣 Fight Plantar Fasciitis: https://wiivv.com?discount=GILMORE20 🔔 Fan Page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn8flUm7L1I71mpN_3vmxHA?sub_confirmation=1 🔔 All Star Doctors: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaqFSp5MMEobRHB-nVXpXKg?sub_confirmation=1 Interested in Dr. G's vitamins? Sea urchin spine removal.
