Oracle tutorial : sys_refcursor in oracle pl sql (sys_refcursor)

09:53
Oracle tutorial : sys_refcursor in oracle pl sql oracle tutorial for beginners cursor in pl sql we can use sys_refcursor as OUT parameter. A cursor is a pointer to a result set for a query. By returning a sys_refcursor you allow the client to fetch many rows from the query as it requires. basically we use sys ref cursor to return set of rows to client. so client can use this result set. u can fetch multiple rows. lets see example.. CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE get_my_list (list OUT SYS_REFCURSOR) AS BEGIN OPEN list FOR SELECT ALTID, FNAME, LNAME FROM EMPLOYEE; END get_my_list; / DECLARE l_cursor SYS_REFCURSOR; ID VARCHAR2(20); FNAME VARCHAR2(20); LNAME VARCHAR2(20); BEGIN get_my_list (list = l_cursor); LOOP FETCH l_cursor INTO ID, FNAME, LNAME; EXIT WHEN l_cursor%NOTFOUND; DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(ID || ' | ' || FNAME || ' | ' || LNAME); END LOOP; CLOSE l_cursor; END; / Subscribe on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpiyAesWNYOXSz5GPq8lbkA For more tutorial please visit #techquerypond https://techquerypond.wordpress.com https://twitter.com/techquerypond database cursor example database cursor sql server cursor

SQL script to insert into many to many table

This means a given student can be enrolled into many courses and a given course can have many students enrolled. Below is the question asked in an interview for SQL Server Developer role. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. With this composite primary key in place, if someone tries to enroll the same student in the same course again we get violation of primary key constraint error. Alter table StudentCourses Add Constraint PK_StudentCourses Primary Key Clustered (CourseId, StudentId) Here is the SQL script that inserts data into the 3 tables as expected Declare @StudentName nvarchar(50) = 'Sam' Declare @CourseName nvarchar(50) = 'SQL Server' Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int -- If the student already exists, use the existing student ID Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName -- If the course already exists, use the existing course ID Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName -- If the student does not exist in the Students table If (@StudentId is null) Begin -- Insert the student Insert into Students values(@StudentName) -- Get the Id of the student Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- If the course does not exist in the Courses table If (@CourseId is null) Begin -- Insert the course Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) -- Get the Id of the course Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- Insert StudentId & CourseId in StudentCourses table Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) If required, we can very easily convert this into a stored procedure as shown below. Create procedure spInsertIntoStudentCourses @StudentName nvarchar(50), @CourseName nvarchar(50) as Begin Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName If (@StudentId is null) Begin Insert into Students values(@StudentName) Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End If (@CourseId is null) Begin Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) End Use the following statement to execute the stored procedure Execute spInsertIntoStudentCourses 'Tom','C#'

Oracle tutorial : Bulk Collect In Oracle PL SQL

09:59
Oracle tutorial : Bulk Collect In Oracle PL SQL oracle tutorial for beginners This Oracle tutorial video will show you how to use bulk collect in oracle. you can see how BULK COLLECT and FORALL concept is used. Bulk collect will improve the query performance. It avoids the context switching between SQL engine and plsql engine Bulk Collect In Oracle 1)When the PL/SQL runtime engine processes a block of code, it executes the procedural statements within its own engine, but passes the SQL statements on to the SQL engine. 2)The SQL layer executes the SQL statements and then returns information to the PL/SQL engine. 3)This transfer of control between the PL/SQL and SQL engines is called a context switch. Each time a switch occurs, there is additional overhead. 4)There are a number of scenarios in which many switches occur and performance degrades. 5)To Improve the performance we use the bulk collect. For more tutorial please visit #techquerypond https://techquerypond.com https://techquerypond.wordpress.com https://twitter.com/techquerypond bulk insert sql bulk insert

Part 19 Copying data from one table to another table using SqlBulkCopy

09:35
In this video we will discuss copying data from one table to another table. The source and destination tables may be in the same database or in different databases and these database can be on the same sql server or in different servers. In Part 18 we discussed, loading xml data into sql server table using sqlbulkcopy. We will be continuing with the example we worked with in Part 18. Step 1 : Create a new database. Name it SourceDB. Execute the following sql script to create Departments and Employees tables, and to populate with data. Create table Departments ( ID int primary key identity, Name nvarchar(50), Location nvarchar(50) ) GO Create table Employees ( ID int primary key identity, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), DepartmentId int foreign key references Departments(Id) ) GO Insert into Departments values ('IT', 'New York') Insert into Departments values ('HR', 'London') Insert into Departments values ('Payroll', 'Muumbai') GO Insert into Employees values ('Mark', 'Male', 1) Insert into Employees values ('John', 'Male', 1) Insert into Employees values ('Mary', 'Female', 2) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', 'Male', 2) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Male', 3) GO Step 2 : Create another new database. Name it DestinationDB. Execute the sql script to just create Departments and Employees tables. Here we have just the structre of the tables and no data. We will be moving data from SourceDB tables to DestinationDB tables. Step 3 : Include the following 2 connection strings for the Source and Destination databases in the web.config file of the Demo project we created in Part 18. [connectionStrings] [add name="SourceCS" connectionString="server=.;database=SourceDB;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /] [add name="DestinationCS" connectionString="server=.;database=DestinationDB;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /] [/connectionStrings] Step 4 : Copy and paste the following code in the button click event handler method in the code-behind file string sourceCS = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SourceCS"].ConnectionString; string destinationCS = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["DestinationCS"].ConnectionString; using (SqlConnection sourceCon = new SqlConnection(sourceCS)) { SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("Select * from Departments", sourceCon); sourceCon.Open(); using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader()) { using (SqlConnection destinationCon = new SqlConnection(destinationCS)) { using (SqlBulkCopy bc = new SqlBulkCopy(destinationCon)) { bc.DestinationTableName = "Departments"; destinationCon.Open(); bc.WriteToServer(rdr); } } } cmd = new SqlCommand("Select * from Employees", sourceCon); using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader()) { using (SqlConnection destinationCon = new SqlConnection(destinationCS)) { using (SqlBulkCopy bc = new SqlBulkCopy(destinationCon)) { bc.DestinationTableName = "Employees"; destinationCon.Open(); bc.WriteToServer(rdr); } } } } Note: Please make sure to include the following using declarations using System; using System.Configuration; using System.Data; using System.Data.SqlClient; As the column names in the source and destination tables are the same column mappings are not required. Bulk Processing in PL/SQL

56:53
"Row by row = slow by slow" - one of Tom Kyte's more famous and catchy memes. Row by row processing of data is so not the way to go. How to avoid it? Fully leverage SQL to do set processing and if that doesn't totally do it for you, then "fall back" on FORALL and BULK COLLECT. These are just about the most important performance features of PL/SQL, and Steven Feuerstein takes a close look in our October Office Hours session. Highlights: 00:30 Introduction, review of Office Hours program 03:32 Why is bulk processing needed? 10:19 BULK COLLECT to retrieve more than one row with each fetch 15:25 FORALL for repeated execution of non-query DML 30:13 Converting row-by-row to bulk processing Then on to Q & A. 39:27 How can I convince developers of the performance benefit of BULK COLLECT? 42:00 Use global temporary tables + SQL instead of FORALL? Oracle tutorial : Global Temporary Table In Oracle PL SQL create temp table sql This video will explain to you how to create Temporary Tables in Oracle Oracle tutorial : Global Temporary Table In Oracle 1)The data in such a table is stored only as long as the session or transaction lasts and is private for each session. 2)The definition is visible to all sessions. 3)After commit or disconnection, the data is lost but the definition of the table remains. 4)Indexes created on a temporary. 5)Scope of TRUNCATE command is a single database session. There is no effect of TRUNCATE on other sessions. 6)Foreign key constraints are not applicable in case of Temporary tables 7)Temporary tables cannot contain column of persistent collection type Syntax : CREATE GLOBAL TEMPORARY TABLE table_name ( column_name column_data_type … … ) ON COMMIT DELETE ROWS; CREATE GLOBAL TEMPORARY TABLE Emp ( id number(5) NOT NULL, name varchar2(50) NOT NULL, city varchar2(50) NOT NULL ) ON COMMIT DELETE ROWS INSERT INTO Emp VALUES (1, ‘Test1’, ‘city1’); INSERT INTO Emp VALUES (2, ‘Test2’, ‘city2’); INSERT INTO Emp VALUES (3, ‘Test3’, ‘city3’); SELECT COUNT(*) FROM emp; Result = 3 rows COMMIT; SELECT COUNT(*) FROM emp; Result = 0 rows For more tutorial please visit #techquerypond https://techquerypond.com https://techquerypond.wordpress.com https://twitter.com/techquerypond oracle temporary table create temporary table sql temp table
