How to Write an Edgar Allen Poe-m

02:48
Now you can write poetry just like your favorite Baltimore boy. Script (Poem Not Included): Edgar Allen Poe; everyone’s favorite goth. His twisted, tormented tales of tragedy are still treasured today. You have to admit: there’s something beguiling about the way he could work an quill pen. So, how did he do it? Well, today we’re going to crack the code and write a Poe inspired poe-m of our own. The recipe for a Poe-like poem has three parts: Common Themes, Common Symbols, and Rhyme Scheme. It is all wrapped up in Historical Context. Let’s start our outline! Death is the most obvious common theme in Poe’s poem, since is life was shrouded with it, so it’s unfair to not start there. Lost love, or love in general, is there too… (rip Virginia/Mama Poe is written) And let’s throw in loneliness. Poe uses nature for a lot of symbols in his poems. It’s really common for him just to go off on how his pain is like a mountain or a hill whatever. But that’s really broad though, so Imma break it down to flora, water, and the sky. He also uses animals and supernatural elements too. Now he doesn’t commonly stick to one rhyme scheme it seems, so I’m just gonna use ABAB but I might slip out of it one or twice because that seems like unconventional-Poe-y thing to do. Now review this beautiful chart. Add any more themes that you feel necessary. Now it’s poem time. Side note: For best results, put on a sad violin compilation, or Evanescence, or any other goth-y thing to solidify yourself in the gothic mood. Write with a quill pen if you can

Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction.[1] He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.[2] He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts; he was orphaned young when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia, but they never formally adopted him. He attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. After enlisting in the Army and later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point, Poe parted ways with the Allans. His publishing career began humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In Baltimore in 1835, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin. In January 1845 Poe published his poem, "The Raven", to instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two years after its publication. He began planning to produce his own journal, The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), though he died before it could be produced. On October 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.[3] Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields, such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today. An old style recitation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", Narrated by Vincent Price

01:48
An old style recitation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", Narrated by Vincent Price Who is Edgar Allan Poe? His name brings to mind horrific images of torturous deaths at the hands of madmen. Being buried alive in vividly suspenseful ways. Edgar Allan Poe Poems have been in print since 1827. Notable Poe classics include “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Raven,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Edgar Allan Poe literature includes short stories, poetry, novels, book’s on scientific theory. If you dig hard enough you will find that many acknowledge Edgar Allan Poes place in history as the inventor of modern detective stories. Edgar Allan Poe also innovated in science fiction. Today Poe’s reputation is built on his tales of terror and his poetry which resonates deep seated fears in many of us. In real life Edgar Allan Poe has been painted to resemble his works. Further digging finds out that this image is wrong because of an unauthorized biography written by one of his detractors. Edgar Allan Poe’s early life was of tragedy and poverty. Going through tragedy after tragedy (some self inflicted) Edgar Allan Poe eventually joined the Army where he began his writing career. After being thrown out of West Point, Poe moved into the paper business where he made a Newspaper successful who did not compensate him for it. In 1845, the raven poem by Edgar Allan Poe made him a success. A portion of which is read by Vincent Price in this animation. Vincent Price starred in a feature length adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s the Raven. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel for more tutorials and examples of Animation with Poser. Edgar Allan Poe: The Light-House (unfinished short story by Poe)

07:28
Themes of foreboding, isolation and paranoia are apparent in "The Light-House". Its style is very straightforward and plainspoken, in contrast to the more elaborate and decorated prose of Poe's earlier stories, implying a shift in Poe's writing style which the author did not live to realize. Like many of Poe's works, "The Light-House" has been studied autobiographically. The lighthouse keeper, then, stands in for Poe himself, who is expressing his own feelings of being alone and isolated and questioning if he can survive. It is very similar in theme to the later and also unfinished short story "The Burrow" by Franz Kafka. Both involve a reclusive narrator who obsesses over the safety of his enclosure, though Kafka's work was much closer to completion and, consequentially, much more elaborate. Given the obscurity of Poe's story, it is very unlikely that Kafka had read it. ************ If you like this video subscribe to my channel.
