Freestyle technique can change according to the distance you are swimming. We will talk about some general differences of the stroke at different speeds. In a 50 freestyle your arms should spin as fast as they can, but also grabbing as much water as possible. The legs play a very important part of sprinting freestyle technique. If you are swimming the 100 or the 200 freestyle however, you should get into a smoother technique. You should be in a very fast pace, but a more rhythmic one. A fast pace that you can hold on for the whole race. The 400, 800 or 1500 are swam in a very different stroke technique. Swimmers use the legs very little. The reasoning behind this is that the legs use up a lot of the oxygen in your blood. If you have them close to the surface by doing small timely kicks, you can swim longer distances in a constant speed. However, this only works if you have a high horizontal position in the water. While you are practicing in the pool, you should try all of these different techniques at different paces. You will start to see how you adapt to each one by repetition. For all these reasons, this video will focus on the great benefits of swimming to burn body fat; I will also show you the best two exercises to burn stored fat at top speed, and a couple extra tips to improve results even more. Sounds interesting? Let's begin! It is commonly said that swimming is one of the best activities to burn fat because, unlike running or riding a bicycle, it puts most of the body's muscles to work. The heart increases its potency as a result; pumping oxygen faster to reach all corners of the body and increasing the rate at which calories are burnt. Simultaneously, heart disease is prevented. On a different note, many people cannot do high impact exercises like running, due to problems in the joints, back or hip, which lead them to sedentary lives. If you are one of these people, swimming turns into a very attractive option. Many people assure that they feel more relaxed and with lower stress levels after a good swimming workout. This is great, because stress increases cortisol levels -- a hormone that makes people store a lot fat very easily. Next, I'll teach you 2 exercises that will help you burn fat like never before. The first one consists of swimming evenly at mid intensity for 15-45 minutes. The key to this exercise is being able to swim uniformly and without stopping for a maximum of 45 minutes. When you do a constant mid intensity cardio (at 60% of your maximum heart rate), your body burns energy that was stored as fat during the whole workout session. Your metabolism will increase its speed as well. Remember, if you're new to swimming, start with 5 minutes or less of continuous swim. Don't get frustrated if you get tired quickly, your strength and stamina will build up over time, until you're able to complete 45-minute sessions without stopping. Now for the second exercise! This one is a bit tougher than last one, but it's even more potent despite the training time being less than half (duration is 10-20 minutes). This high intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise consists of warming up with a slow 5-10 minute swim, then swimming for 1 minute at 90% of your maximum speed, and after that slowing down for 1 minute; the cycle must be repeated 5-10 times. If you do 5 cycles, your training session will last 10 minutes; if you complete 10, duration will be 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can do 1 or 2 laps at high speed and then 1 or 2, slower. Your body won't burn much fat with this exercise, and I know this is not good news... but, once you start doing it, your metabolism will accelerate incredibly and hormones that consume fat will be released in your body. What's amazing about this is that the fat-burning effect lasts up to 2 whole days! Do you get why it's so powerful now? This exercise may be hard to do, but just like the first exercise, you must remember to start slowly, and increase difficulty little by little. Then, what's important is to outdo yourself gradually until you can complete 5 or 10 cycles. Now you may be wondering: How many times a week do I need to do these exercises? You can do mid intensity workouts 4 times a week, but you may add or take away days according to your taste and convenience. I recommend doing HIIT workouts once or twice a week. This type of exercise is so intense that it requires its very own training session. You may swim an additional 10-20 minutes at mid or low intensity after you finish. Aditional tips: • If you're a beginner, you may want to train under the supervision of a swimming teacher to avoid all risk of drowning, even more so if you plan on doing the second exercise. • Make sure you drink a minimum of 2 liters of water a day (the mouthfuls you swallow from the swimming pool don't count ). If you don't, your body's ability to burn fat will be reduced way below its capability and results will take longer to show. • If you're looking for further dieting advice to maximize results, visit my other videos. Breaststroke technique Swimming. Breaststroke might be one of the most complex strokes. It is very different from the other three strokes. To get breaststroke right we need to talk about timing and aquadynamic movements. In these first videos of the breaststroke technique analysis we will focus on the three stages of the timing. The arms The legs The glide On this particular video we will go over the first stage. It has three parts. The open – The pull – The recovery – To practice this movement, you can do this drill on the edge of the pull. This will help you see how far back your hands should go before the recovery. You can also practice the open and the pull with this drill. If you are having trouble focusing on both arms, just practice doing breaststroke with one arm. This will help you to be more conscious about each movement and create muscle memory by repetition. Many beginners tend to do a wide and slow arms’ movement, but breaststroke’s main focus is timing and being aquadynamic, creating as little drag as possible on every single stage. If you just started learning this stroke, you might need some advice to make the process a little bit easier. First of all, there are two kicks while swimming butterfly: the first kick occurs during the catch phase and the other one during the finish. Make sure to keep legs together and move both arms at the same time. Second kick is usually performed stronger in order to help arms fly above the water. Second of all, keep in mind that butterfly is the hardest stroke in swimming and requires power along with good flexibility in shoulders. Work on your biceps, triceps, abs, and lower body (squads and jumps) as well as increasing flexibility. When you're trying to build a great freestyle, it's important you focus on the extreme ends of the body. Why do it: Learning how to drive the hands forward from the legs will help you develop a more complete stroke, and then afford you the ability to choose how fast you want to go, or how efficient you want to be. How to do it: 1 - Consider this a delayed freestyle. Holding each stroke for an extra few kicks. We call it 6-kick swim so it's just enough distraction to get swimmers to delay.... the actual number of kicks isn't that important. 2 - While you hold for a brief moment on each side, focus on extending the arm completely straight out front. 3 - Keep the kick going for the entire length. How to do it really well (the fine points): This drill can also help swimmers learn a better breath timing as well. As you take a stroke, turn your head to air with the body. Immediately after the breath, bring the head back down and focus on your balanced line. You'll be able to identify habitually late breathers in this drill, those swimmers who stroke, then turn the head, then rush, or collapse back to the other side. Take your time in the extended position, and remind yourself to turn the head with the stroke, not after. To advance the drill forward, perform a couple strokes of the drill, and then gradually build back to a regular stroke timing by the end of the length. The goal is to maintain the constant kick, the extension forward, and the correct breath timing.

Knowing how to swim smooth freestyle is essential for lap swimmers, triathletes, open water swimmers, waterpolo players, crossfit athletes and basically anyone wanting to swim as a workout. The first thing to note is the position of the body. The more horizontal your body is, the easier it will be to swim though the water without a lot of resistance. The main issue people have is that their legs sink. To compensate they start kicking faster, then they get tired and their legs sink. The next thing to master is to reduce excess drag. Advanced swimmers actually use very little energy to go forward while swimming smooth freestyle. This is because they have reduced the drag of their bodies as much as possible. One big part of it is the legs. Try to avoid bending your knees too much. For smooth freestyle doing a few narrow kicks, maybe one or two per stroke, should be enough to keep your legs a float. Finally point your ankles in plantar flexion, this will reduce your drag a substantial amount and will help you swim smoothly. If you want to take your smooth freestyle to the next level, work on your core. It will give you stabilization for a better horizontal position. Work also one your flexibility. This will give you a better range of motion and reduce drag. 4 Breathing exercises for smooth freestyle swimming. Progressions. Beginners

On this video I will show you 4 breathing exercises you can do to maintain a better, more horizontal position while swimming smooth easy freestyle. The first exercise is to Grab the wall with one hand, take a deep breath, put your face in the water and kick just enough to put your body in a horizontal position. Practice this exercise on both sides, breathing to the left and breathing to the right, until you feel comfortable with the movement and the breathing technique. The second progression is very similar but you will have a kick board instead of the wall and you will also do full strokes. Kick about 6 times and then take one breath and a stroke. The third exercise is the same as the second but without a kick board. Usually swimmers have a preferred breathing side but it is of good practice to learn how to breathe well from both sides. The fourth exercise is simpler. Just kick with your arms down and move your head to the side to take a breath. There is no arms’ movement. Focus on maintaining the hips high on the surface of the water and take quick breaths the same way you practice on the other three exercises. Now you are ready to do the whole thing! Swim one length of the pool on the smoothest freestyle you can master, while taking short quick breaths. Try breathing every 2 stroke, every 3 stroke and every 4 strokes. Notice the difference. Watch Olympian Jono Van Hazel's near perfect stroke technique just before your next swim and reproduce his smooth movements when you jump in the water: a very powerful way to improve your swimming. Notice that while Jono has a very long freestyle stroke technique he doesn't achieve this by gliding (a very common misconception amongst swimmers). Instead he has low drag and fantastic propulsive technique which gives him great distance per stroke. Whilst he has a long stroke, he also has great stroke rhythm - the real secret to great swimming. Our 'time between strokes' measure shows that Jono has nearly zero gap between finishing one stroke and starting the next. (In fact when he's swimming quickly there's even a slight overlap between strokes.) There are two main challenges in doing an effective underwater kick. Maintaining a good streamline position and moving your body like a dolphin. Now if you just see a dolphin swimming you would assume that the propulsion comes from the back fin, but what you don’t see is that the power to move it is being generated from the central core muscles. The same goes for the swimmer in the water. With good flexibility and core strength, doing effective underwater kicks will be much easier and enjoyable. You can struggle with the first point, the streamline, if you don’t have the necessary flexibility. Flexibility is gain over months, not days.
