1994 University of South Carolina Library Catalog system

06:21
Ever find yourself transported back in time to 1994 and suddenly you have a term paper due for your biology class that you are now enrolled in at USC and you can't dang figure out how to look up anything in the library because of how archaic their 1994 technology is? Actually ripped off of Northern Virginia Community College's worthless public access channel and not an auténtico VHS tape.

Catalog Card Concerto

03:49
Have you ever wondered what happened to all those old library catalog cards when libraries went digital? At the Cleveland Institute of Art, students in Professor Richard Fiorelli's foundation design class got creative and transformed boxes of catalog cards into an orchestra of noisemakers. Freshman Christopher Ramos '14 recorded the sounds, manipulated them, and created this sound piece. Then, using photos by librarian Cristine Rom and photographer Rob Muller, junior Michaela Lynch '12 (T.I.M.E.-Digital Arts) produced this video featuring CIA's Gund Library. "I used the outdated analog slide projectors as an aesthetic starting point and went from there," said Michaela, "adding stop motion, still motion, and all sorts of mayhem." The video premiered to a packed auditorium as the featured musical interlude at CIA's 2011 commencement celebration.

Harper Lecture with David Archer: Of MOOCs and Global Warming

01:26:37
Physical Sciences 13400, Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast, goes international as a free massive open online course, or MOOC, this fall on coursera.org. This course, which has been taught since 1995 and became the most popular class in the University of Chicago catalog, has a long history of outreach toward the education of students and others outside of the University. Professor David Archer will examine online education through the progression of PHSC 13400—first using online interactive models, then videotapes of classroom lectures, followed by a home-grown MOOC called Open Climate 101, which combined the video lectures, quizzes from old exam questions, and exercises using the interactive models. This summer, with the help of a team of videographers, Archer taped about 50 five-minute video clips that encompass the material in the class. Interestingly, he was able to cover the material in one-third the number of minutes as it took in the 45-minute traditional format. Archer will talk about the content of the class and share some of the undoubtedly delightful experiences of running a class that has on the order of 10,000 students. David Archer is a professor in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, publishing on Earth's carbon cycle and its interaction with global climate. Archer has written a series of books on climate change; teaches classes on global warming, environmental chemistry, and global biogeochemical cycles; and is a regular contributor to the climate science blog site realclimate.org. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/UCHICAGOytSubscribe About #UChicago: A destination for inquiry, research, and education, the University of Chicago empowers scholars to challenge conventional thinking. Cool Hearing Test: Are You a Superhuman?

08:13
An average human is capable of hearing frequencies from 20hz to 20000hz. Are you a superhuman or worse than average? Check it out! The older we get, the harder it becomes for us to hear high-frequency sounds. The worse it gets, the fewer chances you have of hearing the birds sing, the beeping of your microwave, and even consonants like s,h or f. You don’t want that to happen to you, right? Do you have any reasons to worry about it? How can you test your ears? Here's a simple, but 100 % accurate test you can take, and we are going to run it in a few moments. When it’s done, we are going to share some fun facts on hearing we bet you didn’t know. What should you do? Put on your headphones. Make sure you are in a quiet place, with no background noises. TIMESTAMPS Test description 0:35 Best hearing test ever 2:15 Results 3:05 10 fun facts about hearing 3:46 SUMMARY How many of you turned out to be superhumans who could catch the sound at 150? Anyone? Oh, yours was 120? That’s pretty amazing, too. 110? That is also better than the average result. Well done! Now, let us see how many of us hear have average or better than average hearing. If your results are not so good, do not panic. Your age influences your ability to hear high frequencies, remember? If it’s really bad, try it again. Maybe the sound was off on your computer. If you are perfectly sure it’s not the computer to blame, you might want to see a doctor to figure out what’s wrong. Oral History of Blaine Garst Part 1

03:33:02
Interviewed by Hansen Hsu on 2016-07-25 in Mountain View CA, X7853.2017 © Computer History Museum Blaine Garst made important contributions to Unix System V at Bell Labs and Objective-C and Java at NeXT and Apple, most notably, protocols and reference counting in Objective-C. Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1956, Blaine Garst was an exceptionally bright child. After moving to suburban Illinois, Garst attended University Laboratory High School, an experimental school run by the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. It was here that he was introduced to computing, through a Russian language class run on the University's PLATO system. In college, he studied economics at the University of Illinois while also taking computer classes, and got a master's degree in Computer Science from UCLA, specializing in Programming Languages and Systems. From there, Garst went on to Bell Labs in New Jersey to work on languages for the Bell Data Network, later transferring to the Unix System V group and becoming a manager. Garst had the distinction of bringing up the first Unix on a dual-processor, the VAX 11/782. In 1987, Garst joined a collaboration between Bell and Sun to unify their versions of Unix, moving to California and working with Bill Joy. Although this corporate partnership fizzled, Garst continued to work on improving the speed of interprocess communication in microkernels, leading to his hiring by Avie Tevanian at NeXT Computer in 1990. At NeXT, Garst managed the Mach kernel team, but quickly moved on to other projects. Most notably, Garst collaborated with Bertrand Serlet to add protocols to the Objective-C language, based in part on his master's work in modular programming. In addition, Garst implemented a Distributed Objects system, added reference counting to the memory management system, and wrote many of the Foundation framework's original classes along with Serlet and Ali Ozer, as part of NeXT's OpenStep strategy to port its development environment to multiple platforms, including Sun's Solaris. Due to Sun's licensing the source code for NeXT's object-oriented frameworks, further work on the code base stopped. By 1996, NeXT's future was banking on its WebObjects web application server tools, and Sun's Java, which was very similar to Objective-C, was taking the industry by storm. Garst created a bridge between Objective-C and Java that allowed WebObjects applications to be written in Java. It was at this point that NeXT was acquired by Apple. * Note: Transcripts represent what was said in the interview. Understanding Catalog Year and Requirements in Degree Works — IUP

02:45
This video explains the importance of understanding how Degree Works uses the catalog year to illustrate program requirements that may be revised/altered from year to year. Program requirements change over time as the curriculum evolves. Degree Works handles the phasing in and out of approved changes by defining all requirements according to the catalog or academic year. First Class of Clark Engineering Scholars

03:53
In 2017, a visionary $15 million gift from the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation to Vanderbilt University established the Clark Scholars Program at the School of Engineering. The program enables talented undergraduate students to become engineering pioneers who reflect the character, passion and vision of A. James Clark. The inaugural class of 10 students arrived on campus in August 2017. By fall 2021, the Clark Scholars Program is expected to be 40 students strong. The program, which is part of the university’s Opportunity Vanderbilt initiative, provides scholarship support to exceptional students representing many backgrounds and viewpoints. The program emphasizes three key components: • engineering excellence • business acumen • service learning These are characteristics that the late A. James Clark embodied and wished to cultivate in others. “The Clark Scholars Program at Vanderbilt will help carry on my father’s legacy,” said Courtney Clark Pastrick, board chair of the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation and one of Clark’s three children, in March. She is also a member of Vanderbilt’s Board of Trust. “He firmly believed in the power of education to develop young leaders — and how engineering leaders can change our world for the better. We look forward to meeting the first Vanderbilt Clark Scholars this fall.” Program Description The Clark Scholars Program provides numerous opportunities to develop a specific type of engineer who merges superb leadership talent, a dedication to civic engagement and a world-class engineering education. As the practice of engineering becomes increasingly diverse, it must retain its emphasis on the public good while contributing to economic growth. While this is an age-old mission, the nature of engineering problems has changed and the complexity of solutions has increased. Clark Scholars will be uniquely prepared to lead in a changing world where technological developments will depend more on human-centered design and engineering problems will become more difficult to solve. The goals of this program are to combine experiential learning, coursework, mentoring and summer experiences into a unique undergraduate career supporting first-generation, women and underrepresented minority students; and to develop a cohort of engineer-leaders with a deep appreciation for and capacity to collaborate across the School of Engineering and the university. Ideal students for this program will want the peer and professional support provided by a cohort model, be academically qualified to complete an engineering major, have a desire for exposure to business concepts and experiential learning situations, possess leadership potential, and be motivated through civic engagement. Combining engineering, leadership, business acumen and service learning creates a new engineer with the capacity to draw from a catalog of learning experiences, which influences professional development, and sets a habit for continued life-long learning and mentorship of others. We are excited for the Clark Charitable Foundation to create the opportunity to build such an engineer at Vanderbilt University.
