The Five Pillars for Building a Strong Team

08:16
When it comes to winning games and having a good sports season, the fastest and strongest players will only get a team so far. In this short interview, the head basketball coach at University of Virginia, Tony Bennett, emphasizes the importance of instilling the proper principles in players so that they can sustain a loss and handle the hardships that often challenge the unity of a team. Coach Bennett explains the history and meaning behind the five pillars of character that shapes his decisions as a coach: humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness. These values should be practiced on and off the court. "Don’t take a short-cut on character," Coach Bennett’s father used to tell him. Coach Bennett also discuses the incredible opportunity and responsibility that coaches, teachers, and other staff members have in acting as mentors and influencing the minds and values of students and athletes.

Does character matter? Principles, values, morals.

03:27
character, morals, principles and values are important than money. Character is in the news. Politicians are accusing each other of lying to their constituents. Businessmen are finding themselves in court, defending against charges of financial corruption. Religious leaders are under scrutiny for financial and personal sins that appear to violate the principles they preach. Sports fans are wondering which of their favorite athletes will next be found to have used illegal "performance-enhancing" drugs. All of this raises the vital question: what is character, and how important a role should it play in public life? Is a leader's private behavior even relevant to his or her public performance? Within the last decade, the United States has seen one President impeached, and another accused of lying in order to drum up support for war. Congressmen who preached "family values" have endured messy public scandals revealing that they did not practice what they preached. Yet elected officials are not the only ones caught up in questions of character; even some of the reporters covering political misconduct have themselves become caught up in scandals involving their own professional ethics.

Teamwork, Discipline, Enjoyment, Respect and Sportsmanship are the core values of this game we all love. As Martin Johnson and Lawrence Dallaglio say at the end of the video, "This principles cannot be taken for granted. The core values that our sport is built on have to be embraced, communicated and lived in everything we say and do. We need to pass them on to the next generation. This is our duty and responsibility to the sport. This is RUGBY."

Are you looking for a job? If you're watching this video, you're part of a small percentage of people that care about the values and principles of their employer; this is a well known success factor in employee performance and tenure. However, you're competing with many others that apply in bulk for the same position; so how do you capitalize on your time investment? Be proactive! when applying And during interviews, be sure to let recruiters and hiring managers know that you watched this! --- 1. Values are what we value: we particularly value these 9 behaviors and skills: judgment, communication, impact, curiosity, innovation, courage, passion, honesty, selflessness. 2. High performance 1:39 : great workplace is stunning colleagues. We’re like a pro-sports team, not a family. We do not measure people by how many hours they work or how much they are in the office 3. Freedom & responsibility 2:24 : our model is to increase employee freedom as we grow, rather than limit it, to continue to attract and nourish innovative people, so we have better chance of sustained success. Flexibility is more important than efficiency in the long term 4. Context, not control 5:03 : the best managers figure out how to get great outcomes by setting the appropriate context, rather than by trying to control their people. 5. Highly aligned, loosely coupled 7:36 : teamwork effectiveness depends on high performance people and good context. The goal is to be big and fast and flexible. 6. Pay top of market 9:35 : one outstanding employee gets more done and costs less than two adequate employees. We endeavor to only have outstanding employees 7. Promotions & development 14:35 : we develop people by giving them the opportunity to develop themselves, by surrounding them with stunning colleagues and giving them big challenges to work on. PRINCIPLES AND VALUES

03:39
1. When I operate in my feelings, I say stuff like "This class is too hard", "I hate that teacher", "I should be getting more playing time", "My social media posts get no play". What are some things you say and do when you are stuck in your feelings. 2. What are your values? A. Mine are always do my best. B. always treat others with respect, watch how I speak to others...how I speak about others...how i speak about myself. Words have power. C. I don't assume stuff about people or situations. I ask questions...I clarify...I don't prejudge...I find the facts. D. I don't take things personally...What people say or post can't make me change how I feel about myself. What they say or post is a reflection of them. 3. When you are frustrated, do you stop living from your values? We all get frustrated...the deal is to recognize it quickly and cut if off...get back to your values.

5 Principles Of Stoicism Explained

05:21
The Stoic Body https://amzn.to/2mRgXPi Here are 5 principles of Stoicism for the modern-day Stoic. Stoicism is an ancient Greco-Roman philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium around 301 B.C. The ideal for a Stoic is to have perfect wisdom and therefore show complete equanimity in the face of adversity. The Stoics believed that virtue is the only good with the four cardinal virtues being: Here are 5 key principles of Stoicism for the every day Stoic. 1. Live Every Day As If It Were Your Last Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher. He once said: “You live as if you were destined to live forever, no thought of your frailty ever enters your head, of how much time has already gone by you take no heed. You squander time as if you drew from a full and abundant supply, though all the while that day which you bestow on some person or thing is perhaps your last.” - Seneca When you wake up, pretend today is your last day and live life as you would in this circumstance. 2. Food Is The Best Test Of Self-Control Musonius Rufus was a Roman Stoic philosopher who in his two part discourse on food said: “That God who made man provided him food and drink for the sake of preserving his life and not for giving him pleasure, one can see very well from this: when food is performing its real function, it does not produce pleasure for man, that is in the process of digestion and assimilation.” - Musonius Rufus Eat to live; don’t live to eat as the great Socrates once said. To practice this principle one can eat plain foods without sauces or try intermittent fasting. 3. Failure Is Natural, Regret Is Foolish Marcus Aurelius was emperor of Rome. His untitled writing, commonly known as Meditations is an important source of Stoic philosophy. “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” - Marcus Aurelius He means that everything, no matter whether it is good or bad is an opportunity to practice virtue. Don’t be surprised by failure, expect it, in fact, embrace it and seek after obstacles in your life which seem uncomfortable, it is here where your character will be tested and most importantly moulded and developed. 4. Focus On The Small Things Zeno of Citium was the founder of Stoicism, described as living an ascetic life. He once said that: “Well-being is attained by little and little, and nevertheless is no little thing itself.” - Zeno of Citium The idea is basically that one must never underestimate the small things in life, because who’s to say that the small things don’t define the larger and seemingness more important parts of life? They do. Don’t place your satisfaction on big goals and dreams, place your satisfaction on small wins. 5. Throw Away Vanity Epictetus was born a slave in what we call Turkey today; he lived in Rome, was then banished and spent the rest of his life in Greece. He said: “It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.” - Epictetus When you wish to pursue philosophy and therefore any subject of interest to you, you must throw away conceit [excessive pride] before you begin. Be willing to learn, be willing to listen, be willing to leave your ego aside to learn, evolve and develop through the wisdom of others and through embracing the joy of ignorance. As the Socratic paradox goes: “I know that I know nothing” Credit: Intro image: https://thequintessentialmind.com/stoicism/ Artwork: https://www.mobogenie.com/collections/final-destination-229.html https://nz.pinterest.com/jabbyone/dean-yeagle-cartoon-art/ https://thereitis.org/epictetus-manual/ http://drawingschool.net/2016/11/04/3d-character-drawing/ https://connectinghappinessandsuccess.com/happiness-hack-38-make-a-list-of-what-you-can-control-vs-what-you-cant-control/ Videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTq_ZhhQLTM

The power of movement | Bart van der Linden | TEDxRoermond

13:02
The Parkour community is a melting pot of passionate individuals who have great ambition and admirable ideals. It is a community in which experienced practitioners willingly take the responsibility of passing on the values and principles that guide the sport. These leaders foster an environment where all athletes are equal, regardless of their skill level. This attitude creates a community of acceptance and positive motivation for everyone involved. By sharing his own experiences and insight, Bart opens a window into the world of parkour, through which we can see his vision of how the parkour philosophy can be learned and applied by everyone in their daily lives. Bart van der Linden is a professional Parkour athlete, from Eersel, The Netherlands. Bart travels all over the world for major competitions, video expeditions and high-level performances. As a top athlete, Bart is committed to constantly challenging himself in order to reach his full potential. He is also a shining example for the international Parkour community. Parkour is a physical exercise, but it is also so much more. According to Bart, Parkour is most of all a mental exercise that creates unity between body and mind. Parkour not only helps one build self-confidence, but also teaches decision-making skills that can be applied to everyday life decisions. In addition, it teaches you discipline and persistence in achieveing your goals. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Sport psychology - inside the mind of champion athletes: Martin Hagger at TEDxPerth

12:02
Martin Hagger is Professor of Psychology at Curtin University. His areas of expertise are social, health, sport and exercise psychology. He is involved in numerous research projects nationally and internationally with a focus on motivation and behaviour change. He is currently leading projects in drugs in sport, promoting physical activity and healthy diet, understanding the mechanisms of willpower and self-control, and reducing binge drinking and the prevalence of smoking. At the highest level, athletes are well-matched in terms of their physical abilities, conditioning, and skill level. But often that is not enough to win and perform on the biggest of stages like the Olympic games. Developing strategies and techniques to get athletes minds in the best possible condition for optimal performance is increasingly important for sports teams and coaches. Martin will provide an overview of the kinds of techniques that elite athletes use to prepare psychologically for their sport, give details of the scientific research into these techniques and how they work, and how the techniques might be used by competitive athetes and coaches to maximise performance. ------------------ TEDxPerth 2012 took place on Saturday 8 December 2012 at the Octagon Theatre at the University of Western Australia. Do Your Family Values and Your Youth Sports Values Match by John O'Sullivan

03:54
As parents, it is up to us to decide what we value most, and then ask ourselves "Is sports delivering those values?" To many times we hold one set of values throughout our lives, and hold another set of a"acceptable" standards when it comes to our kids' sports experiences. We need to ask the hard questions. We need to get our house in order! The mission of the Changing the Game Project is to ensure that we return youth sports to our children, and put the 'play' back in 'play ball.' We want to provide the most influential adults in our children's lives -- their parents and coaches -- with the information and resources they need to make sports a healthy, positive, and rewarding experience for their children, and their whole family. Parenting and coaching young athletes is an art, not a science, and the information you find here can help you navigate the maze of youth sports, and put a smile on your young athlete's face, whether he or she is 6 or 16 years old. Our site is your one stop shopping for the latest and greatest information, research, and best practices regarding high performance, motivation, Long Term Athletic Development, fitness, nutrition, college recruiting, and more. Here you will find resources, training, videos, and books that can help you become the best parent or coach a kid could ever ask for. It will help ensure that you do your part to make youth sports a wonderfully positive part of your child's physical, social, and cognitive education.

Intro to Rugby (1of8) Rugby History, Values and Mode of Play [RugbyUniversity]

01:59
Introduction to Rugby (1of8): This intro covers the background, history and growth of the sport: the mode of play, how the game starts and is played: Rugby Values (teamwork, respect, discipline, humility, sportsmanship): Rugby Union vs League. Video Transcription: As to the beginnings of Rugby, the tale that is commonly retold is that in England 1823, while playing soccer, William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran in to score, thus Rugby was born. Although oversimplified the story of Rugby has a longer history that traces back hundreds of years. Today, Rugby is played by millions worldwide and after almost 100 years has just been reinstated in the Olympics. While Rugby rules have developed and adapted over the last 200 years, the spirit of Rugby has endured. Before getting into the complexities of Rugby, let’s look at a basic overview of the game. Similar to soccer or football, the match is started with a kickoff at which point each team tries to get or maintain possession of the ball and score by touching the ball down in the try zone. In this process players can only pass the ball sideways or backwards although they can kick the ball forward at almost anytime during the game. There is an offside line (similar to the line of scrimmage). This line is dynamic and moves with play. Defending players can only tackle the player carrying the ball and can only tackle safely below the neck or shoulders. Nuances that make Rugby distinct, like Rucks Scrums Lineouts and mauls may look or sound confusing but are simply developments designed to maintain continuity and allow for fair contest, both of which are core principles of the game that we will cover later in this video. This unique sport is built by many values that are under siege in our modern age. . Including: teamwork Respect, Discipline, Humility and Sportsmanship. These values define more than the game; they are the very flames that forge the player on and off the Rugby pitch. It is these values that drive every player to play the hardest and strongest the whole game down to the last second. Whether 50 points behind or 50 points ahead, the game is played at full speed to the end of the match. Not doing so is a disservice to the other players by not giving the best challenge possible and the best opportunity to grow and learn. When you hear a reference to Rugby it most commonly refers to Rugby Union, not to be confused with Rugby league, a version more commonly associated with Australia and England that has different rules. This channel will always be discussing Rugby Union unless otherwise noted.
