For low-volume designs it’s pretty clear that you want to use off-the-shelf components and minimize your NRE costs. But for high-volume the situation can change. Adding a dollar to a product really adds up quick when you make a million units. That pays for a lot of engineering time. So there’s several things you want to think about when you are designing for high-volume systems especially high-volume mechatronic systems. First you need to use the proper technologies. For the mechanics that means things like: injected molded plastic and sheet metal. For the electronics you want to be sure to leverage as many components that are used in high-volume things like the cellphone industry, and then you want to use sheet motors like DC motors. You also need to consider balance across the mechatronic system design. Everything from the power supply to the load needs to be carefully designed to work together so you don’t leave excess margin on the table. Excess margin means excess cost. Finally you want to look for opportunities to use clever algorithms to help you save cost. I call this trading atoms for bits. If you can take parts out of your design by doing something smart with the algorithms, you’re going to save yourself significant cost. Those trade-offs can be hard to make, but if you understand your system well you can find opportunities for significant cost reduction. Audi Smart Factory - Future of Audi Production
Audi Smart Factory P-Tech Day. Subscribe. Audi is making its production fit for the future with the smart factory. In this factory of the future, big data – the creation and intelligent connection of large volumes of data – will facilitate data‑driven and thus highly flexible and highly efficient manufacturing. A method of production in which Audi might no longer build its cars on an assembly line but according to a radically new, disruptive concept is modular assembly. In addition to this major project, Audi is pursuing many other exciting projects for the production of the future – from the application of virtual‑reality glasses to metal 3D printing. Modular assembly. The complexity of automobile production is increasing. New market needs, customer expectations and the legislative framework are increasingly requiring innovative technologies and differing vehicle versions. This means that the fixed timing of the assembly line is becoming less efficient. The more the number of derivatives and variants grows, the more difficult it becomes to master high complexity and integrate new routines into the rigid, sequential process. Audi intends to meet this challenge and to develop a completely new principle for it: modular assembly. With this method, small, separate workstations allow highly flexible working routines – in terms of both time and space. Between those workstations, driverless transport systems take over the transport of the car bodies as well as the parts required for production. A central computer precisely controls the driverless transport systems – it recognizes the needs of each individual station, thus ensuring a smooth workflow. Audi assumes that modular assembly will result in 20 percent better productivity than the assembly lines of today. It is now being applied for test purposes at the engine plant in Győr, Hungary, and application is planned in two further projects. At present, the key principles of this innovative production system are being worked out and tested by “arculus” – a startup company established a few months ago. The Technical Center for Production Assistance Systems. The new driverless transport systems required for modular assembly are being created in Audi’s “Technology Development Production Assistance Systems” department. This small department has developed two types of driverless vehicle: One of them moves under control by a computer, the other moves autonomously on a defined route. Three onboard laser scanners allow the driverless transport systems to orient themselves and to recognize and avoid potentially critical situations. Audi developed the navigation software itself. It is based on automotive software and automotive‑software development processes. The main task of the Technical Center for Production Assistance Systems is to work on new production technologies in early stages of their development. In addition to driverless transport systems, it is also working on four other projects. They comprise safe cooperation between humans and machines when working in the same space, assembly tables with assistance functions and two innovative robots: a flexible gripper arm and a special lightweight robot. The Audi Production Lab. The Audi Production Lab, abbreviated as P‑Lab, develops and supports innovative projects for the production process – often starting with the very first idea. The department currently has five permanent employees andhas already helped to bring innovations such as metal 3D printing, human‑robot cooperation, driverless transport systems and the use of augmented reality at Audi towards series application. The projects currently running in the P‑Lab include two big‑data projects. One of them focuses on the early recognition of mistakes in the placement of screws and bolts; the other examines the flow of components in the area of international logistics for the CKD plants (completely knocked down). Another major subject for the Audi Production Lab is data glasses. They can provide effective support for employees in production, for the planners and engineers in the factory of the future – with assisted reality, augmented reality and virtual reality. Toolmaking. Several future-oriented projects are running in Audi’s Toolmaking division. The structure of the new generation of press tools follows nature, with many parts made of aluminum and plastics. This reduces the weight of those tools, which until now has been up to 45 tons, by up to 20 percent and the energy required decreases by about ten percent. The result is enhanced precision in the forming of sheet‑metal parts. The press shop, where the tools are applied, uses the latest measuring technology. The goal is to develop a complete data chain for each sheet‑metal part. The data chain already begins with the suppliers of steel and aluminum. This is another way in which Audi is enhancing its precision.

I'm the extrusion engineer here at PacMoore. I've been working here since November 2016. My day-to-day tasks are anything from working with the quality department to ensure that we have a good validated kill step, have great hygienic zoning going through our extrusion lab back there, to working with our customers on the front end to make sure that we have all the right specifications down for their product, troubleshooting when we bring stuff from small scale to large scale. So anything any new product that we have, that we've developed here at PacMoore started out in Gridley, Illinois with Jon Baner. He'll send me some specifications; kind of what the product needs to look like on the finished end and then we'll bring it to our extruder here in Mooresville and scale it up for a larger production. So our process specifically; we’ll be given or we’ll develop a profile; whether it be with the customer that already has a well scaled-up version of their product or we'll be taking our information from Gridley to scale up to our facility here. We'll get all of our screens setup, we'll develop a screw profile, decide how we want our feeder set up, whether it needs to have extra paddle pads, internal agitation, whether our pre-conditioner needs to be pushed in or out of line, as well as developing our drying profile. So how long it’s going to be in the oven, what temperatures we need to set it at to reach our optimal drying, and then finally we have our packaging zones so we can do anything from a 30 pound box all the way up to a super sack or tote sack or Gaylords. But the extrusion side of it we have a multitude of different dies, so we'll calculate the open area. The open area is basically how we get enough back pressure to cause an expansion or a puff product to come out of our extruder.

To facilitate the expansion of production capacities, SEMIKRON built a state-of-the-art production and office building with a gross usable surface area of some 12,000m². The 73,000m3 of enclosed space equates to the volume of approximately 125 terraced houses. The clean rooms built during the building project at the Nuremberg site guarantee the automated large-scale automated production of sintered products and meet the high requirements associated with the production environment. The technical installations are rather impressive: for example, the filters installed in the clean room ceiling filter and recirculate approximately 200,000m3 of air per hour (the equivalent of 10 million balloons). The air-treatment systems heat, cool, humidify and dehumidify 140,000m3 of air every hour, the same amount that a single person breathes in 40 years.

Do you think I should do this or start another brand that only focuses on selling sunglasses? Since you have an established business with a brand and customer base, starting the sunglasses under the same name and line is easier. If you start another brand, you’ll have to start from scratch which is not as seamless an integration. Additionally, marketing to your existing customer base would not be as easy. Take the path of least resistance with the traffic you already have going to your website. Q3 Michael Kropp: My desire is to start a small business or brand while in college that consists of my own digital or physical product. How do I go about researching and finding a problem that needs to be fixed that only a new product could solve? Aaron advises Googling “popular things people question”, seeing what problems are being searched via search volume, or viewing specific topics that videos are covering. Once you’ve identified the problem, research that issue. Even if products are out there, you can differentiate & improve upon them and still kick ass. If you already know there’s a market, entering this way is much easier than trying to identify a market that you’re not sure is there. In other words, it’s easiest to identify a strong market and then pick off some of their business. Q4 Ahmed Sharif: Would it be better to get the equipment and manufacture your product on your own or to make a specialized manufacturer do it for you? Tiege Hanley will never be manufactured in-house due to the regulations, certifications, and security surrounding the manufacture of skin care products. Besides, the lab cost doesn’t kill Tiege Hanley’s margins. A lab like Tiege Hanley utilizes is a business in itself, manufacturing a monstrous volume. Further, the labs have on-hand the equipment, scientists, lab techs, staff filling, staff receiving, sourcing of ingredients, and inventory of ingredients. For some businesses, buying the machinery makes sense but not with a regimented product like Tiege Hanley’s. Q5 Chris Winter: I run two larger YouTube channels as my primary businesses and sometimes do run out of energy trying to script my videos. How do you do it Aaron-- bulk script or one video every day that you write? Aaron said that he focuses on one video per day which includes concept, scripting, delivery, and editing. He used a script in the past since he had a tendency to ramble on; however, over the last 10-years, he’s improved. These days, Aaron creates the title, bullets, and then ‘wings it’. Mike Ayre is an industrial design and innovation consultant with over twenty five years’ experience of bringing successful products to market. He began working as an independent consultant in 1990, and established Crucible Industrial Design in 2001. Crucible works across all areas of product development, with a strong emphasis on design for manufacture and the selection of appropriate production methods. The practice has won a number of design awards for appearance, innovation and technical expertise. With a strong interest in the relationship between design and manufacture, Mike has specialised in the design of low volume, high value products, and the role of new production techniques, particularly in the area of Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM). He was one of the partners in a TSB funded consortium (SAVING) that examined the environmental impact of ALM techniques, during which he developed a set of design guidelines for metal sintered parts to minimise waste and energy consumption. How to Master Your Music in 5 Simple Steps
Please read the detailed steps below if you want to get the most out of this video- Especially in Section 4 :) 1) Have an Aim. In this case I am using mastering as a final chance to catch any mistakes, trying to sweeten the song slightly and also make sure it is loud enough. I have an aim at all times in the process - even if it's an experimental part, I still know that's what I am doing. At each stage I ask myself "What am I trying to achieve by using this VST? I also take time to get my head in the right place so that I feel creative and motivated to finish the project - Often overlooked but the most important step in my opinion! 2) Final Check and adding fades Automate the master fader (this is after the effects chain) to fade the start and end of the song. Checking - Listen from start to finish without tweaking anything. Listen for : Clicks, pops, cut breaths, clipping, bad edits, resonances (especially in the low mids), consonance, overly harsh "sss" in vocals, is everything perfectly in time etc? The MIX must be good for a good master. Mastering is not a quick fix for a bad mix. 3)Adjusting the tonal balance. This will help it sound good on all systems. Use reference track and compare to professional releases. If you hear that your balance is off you can use subtle EQ or go back to the mix to fix big problems. I like using Tonal Balance Tool to help me get in the right sort of area but I always set the final levels to taste. I am not paid to promote this plugin but Izotope did send me a copy to use without pressure of showing it in videos. The EQ's I like to use are - Custom Series EQ, TR5 EQual, Eiosis Earth for the high pass. 4) Trying any sweetening. Be careful here - we are not trying to FIX a problem, we are simply looking to give it that extra 1%. This could include saturation (Tape or Tube), Gentle stereo widening, Volume automation (macro dynamics), harmonic excitement and Bus compression. I would be very cautious if you are new to these effects, it's best to experiment with them but don't feel pressured to commit to them. In time, this practise will help you master these tools and before long you will feel in control and be able to use them to help your mastering. I demonstrate using the VBC to compress the mix. Many types of compressors can be used and multi band compressors are often used too. The aim here is the change the sound stage, "glue" things together and add some warmth. Immediately I was fooled by an increase in volume but after tweaking some dials it started to work. The threshold was adjusted until I could hear some gentle compression (I can't remember what the screen was reading but I try not to look at the screen. I kept a slow attack so that the snare wasn't being crushed, I adjusted the release to make it quicker so that it was more open and didn't feel heavy. Then I adjusted the High Pass Filter to make sure that the Kick and Bass were not being compressed (turned down). This final step really opened the song back up. Please listen to the compression again and hear how the bass becomes HUGE after I turn the HPF Dial on the right! The reality is that there are not many "go to settings" that work for all mastering situations. It's important to practise and get comfortable with the tools. 5)LOUDNESS- well sort of.. Mastering for online streaming makes life easier for us these days, we don't need to slam tracks super loud to be heard! When exporting, check what the sites are currently asking for, sometimes these details change but most are asking for a 24 bit Wav file. These supplements are incredibly popular and sell by the truck loads. Some of the things we’re going to discuss… What are nitric oxide supplements? How Do They Work? Why Should We Care? What do the advertisers claim that they do, and do they actually do it? Should you take one? Alright, so what are nitric oxide supplements? Any supplement that contains either arginine, agmatine or citrulline is technically a nitric oxide supplement since all affect the production of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide is gas that plays all sorts of roles in the body, but the one we’re most interested in is vasodilation - Vasodilation simply means it makes your blood vessels expand - that’s what leads to the muscle pump these products are so famous for. Just an aside: nitric oxide supplements can also used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, but I will talk about that in different video. Now most of the time when people refer to nitric oxide supplements they’re referring to pre-workout supplements because these products often contain a hearty dose of one or more of the 3 main ingredients we’re going to discuss. Pre-workout supplements if you’re not familiar with them, are designed to be taken prior to a workout and contain a number of ingredients designed to boost the efficiency of it. In general, nitric oxide supplements only make up a portion of these product’s formulas, but that’s the portion we’re going to talk about today. How Do They Work? Let’s discuss the three primary NO supplements. Arginine The most common nitric oxide suppplement, Arginine is an amino acid which converted into nitric oxide by an enzyme – a family of enzymes actually - called nitric oxide synthases. Simple, right? You consume arginine in your preworkout supplement, the nitric oxide synthase guys come along and break it down, and you’ve got nitric oxide and an awesome pump. Citrulline Citrulline is an amino acid that our bodies regularly convert into arginine in something called the urea cycle. You don’t really need to worry about the urea cycle and how it works. All you need to know is that citrulline is easily converted into arginine in the body. Although arginine is the most common nitric oxide supplement, citrulline might actually be a better choice. Why? Because the more arginine you take and the more often you take it, the less effective it becomes at boosting nitric oxide. This is due to the ramping up of yet another enzyme – called arginase - whose job also is to break down arginine. Remember those nitric oxide synthase guys? The enzyme guys who break arginine down into nitric oxide? They are not the only enzymes which act upon arginine. And when this other enzyme arginase breaks down arginine, it means there`s less arginine available to be converted to NO. The reason why citrulline may be a preferred alternative to arginine for boosting NO is that Citrulline actually inhibits the activity of arginase, and because it`s easily converted to arginine itself, it ultimately bypasses this enzyme problem and gives us more NO. If this doesn`t make sense to you, don`t worry about it to much – all you really need to know is that citrulline may be superior to arginine as a nitric oxide supplement. Agamatine Agmatine is a relatively new addition to “pump” products and is not, as you may have heard, a nitric oxide precursor – it does not work in an identical manner to arginine – which I have seen argued. That’s simply not correct. However, it seems to affect NO production in other ways. I’m going to talk more about agmatine in a separate video, simply because it’s so new and there’s really no published data on it from sports performance perspective. Based on tesimonials and anecdotal feedback, it does seem to work. Why Should You Care About NO? The reason why we anyone who lifts weights interested in nitric oxide is because it enhances blood flow. Better blood flow delivers additional nutrients to muscles, lessens inflammation, and leads to that pump – the feeling of your muscles being absolutely engorged with blood – that awesome feeling knowing as the pump. The first mass-producible 3D-printed electric car in the world was launched and shown to the public. Although this new vehicle attracts much attention, this conference is not just about launching and exhibiting the car. It is more about how 3D printing technology brings revolutionary changes to automotive manufacturing industry. This car, named LSEV, could be the milestone product in the adoption of 3D printing into mainstream production. “XEV is the first real mass production project using 3D printing. By saying real, I mean there are also lots of other companies using 3D printing for production. But nothing can really compare with XEV in terms of the size, the scale, and the intensity.” Said, Dr. Luo Xiaofan, the co-founder and CEO of Polymaker. XEV CEO, Stanley said that “after the research and investigation of the global auto market, they decided to design a small electric vehicle that can achieve C2M (Customer-to-Manufacturer) manufacturing which is stated as a main goal of the Industry 4.0 strategy.” To fulfill this target, it requires mass customization production, fast and cost-effective R&D, and the ability to produce lighter-weight parts that could lead to greater fuel efficiency. “And then, 3D printing technology becomes the only way to realize it”, said Stanley. Surely there are many difficulties when utilizing 3D printing technology in auto volume production, Polymaker was chosen as the strategic partner and successfully helped XEV to solve them, not only with material solutions, but also post-processing options in-line with the automotive industry. “Without Polymaker, we couldn’t make this happen. We really like our interactions with Polymaker, this can be called as know-how combination. Without this kind of interaction, we also couldn’t find the solution we have today. So, we really appreciate what Polymaker do and create for us, we are like brothers, not just strategic partners.” said, Stanley. Polymaker developed dozens of kinds of engineering plastics for XEV to meet their needs of practical applications. As a result, 3 crucial achievements have been accomplished. XEV has decreased the plastic parts and number of components in a car from more than 2,000 to 57, and the finished LSEV weighs only 450 kilograms, much lower than similar sized vehicles usually weighing between 1 and 1.2 metric tons. Apart from the chassis, seats and glass, all the visible parts of the car are made by Polymaker materials through 3D printing. This switch of production leads to more than 70 percent reduction of the investment cost in comparison with a traditional production system. Conventionally the R&D process of a car model takes about 3-5 years, but it only takes XEV 3-12 months to finish a new design. Polymaker have also come up with solutions to help with surface treatments and color. These solutions are enormously helpful in customized production and 3D printing volume production. XEV has already received 7000 orders from Europe even before mass production commences. 5000 orders come from Poste Italiane. And the other 2000 orders come from ARVAL, a vehicle leasing company fully owned by BNP Paribas. XEV plans to start production in the second quarter of 2019. This strategic partnership between XEV and Polymaker leads to a revolutionary change in automotive manufacturing. It is possible that similar changes, related with 3D printing technology, will happen to every aspect of manufacturing very soon. As Polymaker proves that the 3D printing materials they provide are ready for not only end-use parts but also mass production of finished products.

Electric Porsche Taycan Pre-Production Review
This is the second encounter for rally legend Walter Röhrl and the Porsche Taycan. Shortly before climbing in, he seemed to be about as tense as the engineers assigned to monitor the test ride – but that changed very quickly. The Newsroom brings you an exclusive test drive. His first ride in the new Taycan was a few months ago. Even on just a short lap the car still left its mark, both on the development team to which he belonged at the time, and on Walter Röhrl himself: “It’s a very exciting time because technology is moving forward at an incredible rate. I’m anxious to see what the car can do compared with last time.” The black-camouflaged Taycan almost disappeared from view, just moments after the convoy left the main gate of the Porsche development centre in Weissach; the camera team’s Cayenne lost the struggle to keep pace as it immediately became clear that Walter meant business. He wanted to test the vehicle to the limit. A few kilometres later we caught up with him at a car park in the woods, where he had stopped to wait for us. The look on his face spoke volumes. What was your first impression? WR: It’s crazy. In all my years of rallying, I’ve never experienced such performance. The Taycan goes so well at such speed, really tremendous. How does the Porsche Taycan handle? I’m surprised because you barely notice the weight any more. The engineers have done a great job on the tuning and have made excellent use of the low centre of gravity. The steering and even the brakes handle superbly. In what ways could you detect the Porsche DNA? If I had to drive it blindfolded, I would still know immediately that I was sitting in a Porsche. The weight and the feel of the steering – and yes even the brakes, which are far more difficult to get right because of the combination of recuperation and conventional brakes – they’re all right on the money. And that’s what a Porsche should be all about. We were then joined in the car park by Robert Meier, complete vehicle project manager, and Ingo Albers, chassis director for the Taycan product line, who came to discuss the vehicle with Röhrl. Their pride in response to the rally legend’s comments during the interview was clear to see, and in conversation they addressed every tiny detail. The discussion quickly moved on from brake response to general topics such as battery cooling system, heat exchange for interior heating, and average heat efficiency in a wide range of driving profiles. The fact that Walter Röhrl addressed the issue of electromobility was notable, and he had plenty of questions on the topic ready for the team. He was certainly impressed by the answers he was given, long before market launch, and it was really striking to see how excited he was already about the product, even though it is still in the development phase. What impresses you the most about the Taycan? WR: How little I actually miss the engine noise. I would never have expected that the lack of any sound from the drive system could mean no loss of performance. In fact I really like the quietness of the Taycan; it’s something of an experience in itself. In comparison with a conventional driving experience, how is the Taycan most different? Simply in the performance. Even in my fastest rally cars, I have never experienced performance like it – and the immediate response, this instant reaction that makes me smile every time. Where does Walter Röhrl see room for development between now and series production? Not a great deal on the car itself, as I think they are already on the way to delivering a fantastic product. However, my opinion is that they need to get infrastructure in place quickly, because I think I would go mad if someone was in front of me at the pump and I had to wait. Making Alcohol Measurements in a Winery - Distillery Co-founders of Black Dirt Distillery and Warwick Valley Winery, Jason Grizzanti and Jeremy Kidde, have been in the business of making alcohol based beverages for over 25 years. Starting as fruit cultivators, the two men fell in love with the idea of making hard cider form Apples, and opened their farm winery in 1994. Since then, the two men have spent years perfecting their products, and have created even more product lines since. With the opening of their newest production facility, Black Dirt Distillery, in 2012, the co-founders have expanded the production of their spirit products to include bourbon whiskey, rye whiskey, and Apple Jack Brandy. Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery is located in the foothills of the New York State’s Hudson Valley. With over 120 acres of manicured grounds, gardens, and various building it is a wonderful place to spend a day. The Winery and Distillery produce a wide range of products including award-winning and New York’s original hard cider, Doc’s Cider. The Black Dirt Distillery was the first micro-distillery to open in New York State since prohibition and is where the Double Gold award winning Black Dirt Bourbon was created. In addition the Winery produces a critically acclaimed wine collection, and they make a mean sangria as well as excellent cocktails. Locally sourced food is available and they offer a gourmet farm-to-table style cuisine. Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery has recently purchased a Rudolph AlcoTest-RI, and with the help of Darvin Martin from Rudolph Research Analytical, we would like to show you the many ways the AlcoTest-RI can be used in your winery and distillery. It is truly an all-purpose, time saving, instrument for a multi-product production environment such as a winery-distillery. - Rudolph Research Analytical makes it faster than ever to test the % ABV value of alcoholic products with consistent accuracy, using the new AlcoTest-RI. - The AlcoTest-RI, which includes the TTB approved DDM 2911 Plus density meter, is a great way to measure the specific gravity of “distiller’s beer” right before and right after fermentation to calculate % ABV of the finished beer. The results can be stored right on the instrument so you can monitor your batches over time. This is a great way to monitor and maximize the %ABV yield from your mash. Varying the mash bill, fermentation time, the yeast, and temperature will have an effect of the %ABV yield of the finished distiller’s Beer. - When making cuts from the still and when barreling, the highly accurate Density Meter component of AlcoTest-RI can be used to measure “Percent ABV” to make cuts and dilutions precisely and consistently, every time. The DDM2911 PLUS also has on-board software for calculating dilutions as per the TTB gauging manual. This feature is called AlcoCalcTM - The TTB requires that obscured products like an Apple Pie Moonshine be distilled in a lab still to remove just the water and alcohol so that the %ABV can be measured in a TTB approved density meter or with a hydrometer. When blending down an obscured spirit this might necessitate several, hour long distillations. - One of the great advantages of the AlcoTest-RI is it can deliver accurate but “Unofficial” Percent ABV readings of obscured products. In less than 2 minutes you can have a Percent ABV measurement, then continue diluting and blending – this save hours of work on each batch and countless hours each month. Only the final measurement for label value would have to be done with the lab still and it is possible to eliminate many of those distillations as well. - When using the AlcoTest-RI in production mode the % ABV measurements are quite accurate without distillation even on obscured samples like wines and ciders. The refractometer sees the obscuration in the sample and is able to compensate for this when testing the density / Percent ABV. Since tax is paid by volume at a flat on these lower %ABV products your main concern is being below the Percent ABV limit. The AlcoTest-RI will be more that accurate enough for measuring these products. - If you are a winery, distillery, or a combination of both, the AlcoTest-RI is the perfect instrument for your application providing any and all alcohol related testing in one system. It is really the ideal testing solution for all of the many testing activities that might be used in the making of high proof spirits, wine and cider. The TTB requires that obscured products like an Apple Pie Moonshine be distilled in a lab still to remove just the water and alcohol so that the Percent ABV can be measured in a TTB approved density meter or with a hydrometer.
